Who has to enlist in the army this year?

army.jpg
In Korea, all “healthy” males must serve their country by going to the army, navy, marines, etc for two years. Since all our favorite male celebrities fall under the “healthy” category, they must enlist sooner or later. The media is already making predictions about who’s going to enlist this year and guess who’s going?

Sadly, Jo In Sung (from “Happenings in Bali” and the movie “A Dirty Carnival”) is on the list. Kim Tae Woo, vocal from boy-band group g.o.d is expected to enlist at the end of this year. HaHa - comedian/singer is planning to enlist as well as ballad singer Sung She Kyung.

Before you get upset about their predicted absences, let me tell you that many celebrities in Korea are known for delaying their services because well, they don’t want to leave at the climax of their career. Let me just remind you that none of the members from boy-band “Shinwha” served their time yet, although they are very well over age.

Is there a certain age that guys are off to their service?

  2. 2 luvlet January 13, 2007 at 1:08 am

the letter asking them to serve arrives when they are around 20, but most people delay them if they are enrolled in school. My guy friends from Korea told me that its better to go early, and the current trend in Korea is going after freshmen year.

NOOOOOO NO HAHA I love this guy.Their system sucks 2 years is tooooo long. KOREA is a democracy, right? so why they force them ? excuxe me for the koreans who read me but in my country(France) the governement doesn’t oblige people to enlist in the army:I know North Korea’s issue bla bla bla. BUT We are in the 21th century, not 50 years ago…WAKE UP

@bebetama, its not the whole “forced to go to military” thing (although, yes, they ARE obligated), but its more for Korean pride and serving the country and doing the citizens proud.

You know they should go ahead and serve their time I mean two years is not that really of a big deal. Unlike in the States where you basically serve 4 to 8 years or practically your whole life. They should just go ahead and serve and get it over with and maybe their basic training is not all that bad.

My prof told us about the military service thing some time ago.

There are many koreans attending our university, and she says that some at their sophomore or junior year return to Korea to do military service.

    It’s kinda inevitable.

Wonder what’ll happen to DBSK or SuJu if one or two of their members enlisted in the army.

I think jo in sung should do first a drama so his fans will not feel that bad because of missing him, especially here in the phillipines

  12. 12 uhhhhhoooo September 4, 2007 at 11:29 pm

why delaying their services just because their at the climax of their career. their no war going on in Korea so why are they sacred. it not the U.S their ass ain’t going to war! shit get it over if. my ass would sing up but their a war going and i don’t wanna die and am a girl. i love them and all but they need to man up!!

  13. 13 Mike September 4, 2007 at 11:50 pm

it’s better to delay their services at the climax of their career so they can make more money…because there’s no guarentee they’ll get back on top of the A-List payroll after 2 years.

I could not agree with you more. You gotta make that paper while you can, cause as you’re leaving someone else is on the horizon to take your spot. Nevertheless, if youve got skills to pay the bills whether you come back in two or four years, those SUperStars still rule. When is Kang Dong Won going to the army? or is he too pretty to join Just joking.

  15. 15 KyuMin October 11, 2007 at 5:16 am

DANG JUST SERVE ALREADY!!!!! seriously if they say they’ll do then just do it already stop trying to get more fans and then retract what you say

  16. 16 citra October 11, 2007 at 12:31 pm

Well I thought military in korea are optional, unlike in Indonesia young guys have to do several test to join the military. no wonder korean actors or celebrities start their career at young age. but 2 years way too long dude!!! they’re still have things to do to boost up their careers, good luck for them!!!!!

  17. 17 Mary3lucky October 13, 2007 at 11:01 pm

Sorry to boast, but i loved these guys…hopefully their service can wait!!
I’m not so sure about Kim sung soo, maybe he’s been in the service,’coz he’s in his thirties already..lol

Bebetama, The North Korea thing IS a big deal. Many wars are being fought and many people are losing lives because of dictatorial or evil regimes. Its happening now as it has been happening through human existence. Armed forces are crucial for a healthy country to have, especially one as vulnerable as South Korea. How can you make light of the sacrifice that men make to protect their country? They enlist because they want to preserve their democracy. Having a free society and maintaining it is very difficult if you just sit around and let anyone take over. A democracy thankfully balances and utilizes certain powers to maintain the laws of freedom.

You just want your favorite popstar to keep singing. Well you favorite popstar wouldn’t exist if it hadn’t been for soldiers fighting off communists who would have eradicated any kind unique artistic culture or economic growth. Look at the downhill mess France has gotten itself into. You don’t live in a free country- you think you do, but people like you let the men with pretty words just take over without really thinking about the consequences. And now for 1 bill to pass in your country, you’ve got to sit around and hope that the EU parliament actually reads yours out of the 200 they have for that single day and if your lucky they may just close their eyes and eeney miney mo it.
