“200 Pound Beauty” (directed by Kim Yoon Wha) is about depressed and inconfident 200 pounds woman (Kim Ah-Joong) who goes through cosmetic surgery to win her love and achieve her dream of becoming a singer. On the surface, it seems like any other romanic comedy movie, but I was surprised to find out that the movie has strong foundations. The plot was based on Japanese comic book and best seller novel, “200 Pounds Beauty.” According to movie critics, it’s a witty and comical portrayl of Korea’s current obsession of outer beauty and plastics.
After its opening weekend, it’s been dominating all sorts of charts. “200 Pounds Beauty” attracted more than 5 million viewers, breaking “My Sassy Girl’s” record. In addition, the song “Maria” – sung by the “after” Kim Ah-Joong has been #1 in music charts, stealing the pie from full time singers. Fans are actively downloading ring-tones to enjoy the song every time they receive a phone call. She even won the “Cyworld Digital Music Award.”
It seems like everybody is benefitting from this chick flick. The producers are stunned by the box office earnings, the lead actress, Kim A-Joong is now an A-list star, the fans (women mostly in their 20s) can’t stop talking about the movie and O-Hui’s (cosmetic brand) brand manager is delighted by the increase in sales and brand awareness as a result of product placement. It was a truly win-win situation for everybody involved.

I like the sad song that Hana sung at the end of the movie and during the audition after her transformation. Everyone cried when KAJ sung that song – me included!
a great, touching movie that is what korea needed. i myself was a overweight girl who just recently lost 50 pounds and i’m happy more people need to understand beauty is only skin deep.
It’s such a humorous, entertaining movie. I love Loveholic’s song Maria in it. The ending for me was a little cliche, but it sends a good message that who they like is Hanna (the chubby girl before plastic surgery in this movie) not Jenny (the pretty girl after plastic surgery.) What they like was inside not her silicon and botox.
i like this movie so much..i watch for so many times..especially almost towards the ending parts..so touch,i cried like hell..so touching..OMG!!
