Margaret Cho: Not representing

mcho-1.jpg

The pictures are not flattering. Wearing jeans 2 sizes too small, showing off her rollover and tattoo, Korean American comedian Margaret Cho (38) performs at the South Beach Comedy Festival in Miami Beach on the 19th. And to add insult to injury, Cho was named the 2nd worst comedian of all time by the US men’s magazine, Maxim. An honor that one can do without.

maxim’s readership aren’t groomed to like cho’s type anyway. i can take her only in small doses, but she’s real smart, tough and charismatic fo shur

I feel bad for this talented and funny woman who is caught between a culture that refuses to acknowledge her, while another tries so hard to disclaim her.

I agree with the previous two comments that she kicks ass and she is charismatic.

BTW, there’s nothing wrong with tattoos, nothing wrong if ONE magazine dislikes her, nothing wrong that she is at least daring to be different.

i think she’s actually quite funny lol just some of her jokes aren’t lol but overall she’s great

Sometimes she makes me feel ill because of her badly done make up and her especially complimentary Asian-whore colored lipstick.

But mostly, it’s because she’s not very funny.

margaret cho represents strong, independent women everywhere who are comfortable with their body. if that’s not popseoul’s cup of tea that’s fine. she also has a killer full body tattoo that makes me jealous.

I’m a Korean girl living in the States and I check this blog once in a while to remain some sort of connection with Korean pop culture. First off, I’m offended that Margaret Cho is even mentioned in this blog. She is as Ed said altogether too “smart, tough, and charismatic” to have to associate with some of these vain, insecure, plastic figurines. Second, I’d be surprised if Margaret Cho gave a fuck about what Maxim said or what this blog says. For Maxim, even in the US she’s not mainstream, some people get her and some don’t. With your blog, she’s not going to dress the way you want her to or is she going to get a nosejob/eyelid job/whateverthefuck job’s trendy because she knows people who do appreciate her love her for her personality.

I think I love you, minji. You took the words right out of my mouth!

Margaret Cho is so not funny. And I find it really pathetic that the only jokes she can come up with are jokes bashing the Asian community. It may not seem like a big deal, but she is one white-washed fatso. No offense to you Margaret Cho fans out there.

she’s not funny but then again, she’s not afraid to make fun of the Asian community because if you can’t laugh at yourself, what right do you have to at others?

Russel Peters is the best example of it.

Margaret Cho is beautiful, inside and out.

I think Maxim’s list is more appropriated titled, “Comedians who scare the crap out of us.” Margaret is funny, edgy, and cool. Maxim is… well, not.

Margaret Cho…a rich soul that seeps through every look she shares. What a brilliant artist whose canvas is truly herself. Thank you Margaret Cho for living your spirit.

if flattering pictures were what it took to demonstrate an understanding of asian perception in the west, incisive wit, and intelligent humor, then song hye gyo would be an asian american comedian too.

    oh. but she’s not.

if having an unflattering picture were an injury to margaret cho, i think people thinking that she actually cares would be the added insult.

i’m not a fan of margaret but i am familiar with her, and i think you are going the wrong direction here.

    love the blog updates, though.

It’s it a little pathetic that the only way I came upon your “plastic image of asian culture,” website was upon searching for Margaret Cho? :P

First off, Korean culture HAS NO representation. What you call korean pop-culture is nothing but a facade and fake copy of US hip hop, and other original music/genres, so who are you (this website) to say what is mainstream or not? It’s even more pathetic that we as Koreans are even more prejudice and racist (especially to our own) than others. What is wrong with you? You should be ashamed of yourself, and if you knew anything about Margaret Cho… she has fought with weight issues her whole life because of said stereotypical “korean” remarks such as yours.

So in short, I’m 100% sure that what you say here is not going to even make a dent on her success as an open, outspoken, and honest Korean-American but will surely hurt yours instead.

margaret cho is FABULOUS and will probably rip apart any of the pure, innocent, boney pop acts in today’s media
