Ask POPSEOUL! Getting into parties

Hi popseoul

I was actually wondering if you could tell us more about yourself. I’m a journalism student at NYU and I’m interested in Korean pop culture, and I’m actually going to Korea this summer–how can I go to these press-type events or go to celebrity events?

Jessica

Dear Jessica,

Getting into parties is dependent on who you know. I can suggest that you try to hit up all your connections in Korea who are in the entertainment, marketing, promotion or anyone working for foreign luxury brands, cars, cosmetics etc- the kyopo community is a small one so i’m sure there is someone you know who is already here and knows about the what’s hip and happening in terms of parties. There is also a daum.net cafe that is dedicated to going to parties, if you know Korean, you should sign up for that. I’m not too sure what it is called, but if you do a search on “파티,”(trans: party) then you can probably find it. If all else fails, you can just hang out at the hip bars, such as the old standby S bar, around Apkujong & Cheongdam to spot stars.

Also, if you do get invited to the parties, make sure you go early because the stars usually show up at the beginning to take their obligatory pictures and grab their goodie bags before disappearing. Perhaps that is why I never see them when I go, cauz I always go late or just hang around the snacks.

I hope that helps.

Is this a generic “Ask Popseoul” section or only a section devoted to getting into parties?

Anyways, I was wondering if you could answer the following two questions about the television drama that aired a few years called “Yungwoong Sidae” (”Heroic Age”?). I am sorry I do not have Korean font.

    The questions are:

    1. Do you know who played the wife of Cheon Iguk, the second son of the main character who was based on the Hyundai founder Chung Juyung? I’ve looked every where for her name, but I could not find it (though I did find the name of the actress who played the wife of Park Daecheol [based on Lee Myungbak]–of whom I was also curious).

    2. If you are actually a Korean entertainment industry insider, do you know why the drama was prematurely canceled? The excuse proferred by MBC [poor ratings] was obviously bogus, as the drama was #1 among all dramas for the same period.

I heard Lee Hwangyung, the writer of the drama, say that there was pressure from the Blue House, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some truth to that allegation. Of course, I don’t take the then Prime Minister Lee Haichan’s denial too seriously. Other sources I’ve read online said pressure by Hyundai and Samsung as well, given that the drama revealed some embarrassing family tales of the Chungs and the Lees.

    Anyways, thanks in advance.

    Gaek,

You asked us at the right place. We are sorry for the delayed response. I didn’t follow this drama closely to give you an in-depth answers to your thoughtful questions just yet, but I’ll do some research over the week and get back to you asap. Thank you for your patience!

hi! Popseoul wondering if this news is true?
I felt bad when my friend e-mail me this news….
I didn’t read it in your site so wondering if this is right or true. I’m a H.O.T fan and loves Tony An so much.
    Thanks!
    FOREVER H.O.T

Skoolooks, the company that singer Tony An owns, is gaining much interest due to its exaggeration of advertisement and untruth. It has been revealed that skoolooks has sold cheap Chinese cloth while deceiving that it is actually Korea’s expensive cloth. On the 30th, however, the Fair Trade Commission revealed that, “Although ‘skoolooks’ advertised that they make their uniforms out of cloth from Chail Industries, it has been revealed after inspection that it was actually cloth of Chinese origins.”

The uniform company ‘skoolooks’ advertised throughout the nation as if the uniforms they were selling were made from Chail Industries. Last February Skoolooks made promotional signs with the statement ‘Made from Chail Industries Cloth’ and posted them all over the 90-some stores throughout the nation.

However, according to the results of the Fair Trade Commission, the cloth that skoolooks uses for its uniforms are made by a company in China, ‘Chun Jin Samsung Industries’. Skoolooks have used this cloth to produce their uniforms. A representative of the Fair Trade Commission stated, “Chail Industries own 75% of the Chinese company, ‘Chun Jin Samsung Industries’. Skoolooks used this fact to deceive that their products were produced from Chail Industries.

A representitive of the Fair Trade Commission stated, “Even if it is an equity participation corporation, there is a difference in both quality and cost between cloth of Chail Industries and cloth from China. Just because Chail Industries owns a portion of this company, one cannot say that the Chinese cloth is the same as Chail Industries cloth. This belongs in the category of untruth and exaggerated advertisment.”

With regards to this, a skoolooks representative stated, “We’re not at the stage to say anything about the matter yet. However, we did not use Chinese cloth but Chail Industries cloth produced in China. I think there is a misunderstanding with regards to this point.” Skoolooks will express their exact position sometime next week.

Skoolooks is a uniform company that gained much interest and publicity in 2004 due to the fact that Tony An was the CEO of the company. Skoolooks publicized their products by putting Tony An’s image upfront. In the first year, they recorded a sale of 14 million won. Last year, they increased the sale to 20 million and stood upright as part of the ‘Big 4’ in the uniform business. However, Skoolooks has seemed to lose its reputation both as a company and of its CEO due to this accusation.

Show us the best pics of yourselves, Popseoul!, so that we can judge for ourselves whether you can meet your own high standards of beauty and fashion for the Korean entertainers - most of whom seem to fail the tests badly. ;)

    Dear Popseoul,

do you know which celebrities smoke and which don’t?
i know it’s a very odd question but i hope there are some celebrities who don’t do stuff like that.
also, how do these actresses/singers maintain such fabulous hair?
