What a year for Ms. Jeon Do-yeon! First she gets married to a rich older man, and now she has won best actress award at the famous Cannes Film Festival for her role in the film “Secret Sunshine (trans: Mil-yang),” directed by Lee Chang-dong. Ms Jeon is the first Korean female actress to win the prestigious award and the second Korean to win an award at Cannes after Park Chan-wook won for Best Director for the hit film, “Old Boys” in 2004.

Wow, I’m really glad that she’s won. She’s one of the few actresses in the Korean industry that I’ve seen that can actually ACT. (And being slightly older seems to have escaped the same face syndrome plaguing younger stars. Ahem.) I have been lazy and haven’t seen her more recent movies like You are my Sunshine and uh Secret Sunshine (what is up with all the sunshine?) But she was great in the other movies I’ve seen. She played a 16 year old and she was hmm actually 26 or 27 at the time? But her body language and posture it was just wow.
Congratulations to Ms. Jeon! She has proven she’s an actress of outstanding calibre! Incidentally, I’ve noticed she has become prettier since her marriage.

JDY is well-known among the industry insiders as being hard to work with (hence the “bitch” comment) and being exceptionally slutty, even by the standards of a female actress (think someone with a reputation for whoring along the lines of Yi Seung-yeon; hence the “slut” comment). If Popseoul is indeed as well-versed about the Korean entertainment industry as she seems to be, I am sure she will confirm my comments.

Thanks for acting more “mature” than the typical Korean or Korean-American celeb-fans.
To me, few things are more ludicrous than people getting worked over celebrities.
As a general matter though, is it so surprising that Korean female celebrities are both bitchy and slutty in general? They tend to be bitchy, because they live in a synthetic world they are worshipped and catered to and hence develop massive egos; they tend to be slutty, because they are in the business of selling–whether metaphorically or literally–selling their bodies. In fact, it would be surprising if they were not bitchy or slutty. But the problem with JDY is that she takes that to another level; that is, she is even bitchier and sluttier than your average Korean actress.
Gaek, I’m just curious, which article did you read that from about JDY and her characteristics? Or have you been in contact with her before?
I guess top actresses either need to be “bitchy” & “slutty” (sorry popseoul) or Mother Theresa (Think Angelina Jolie) to be recognized.
I always felt that JDY knows how to make use of her assets and talents to the benefit of herself. Anyhow, she’s a great actress and I respect that.

I know a bit about the entertainment industry because (as I mentioned in a different comment) 1) a family friend is a high-level executive for one of the three main broadcasting stations; 2) I have several personal friends who do well for themselves and have had trysts with some of these women. JDY, unfortunately, along with Yi Seung-yeon, et al., consistently comes up as a nymphomaniac.
By the way, I forgot to respond to your assertion that JDY is “[indisputably] the best actress in Korea now.” I personally think 강수연 is a superior actress, for instance. She is better-looking than JDY too, though neither are exactly beauty queens.
Just curious — is she considered “slutty” by Asian standards or by Western standards? …because I do believe there’s a difference!

good actors really need to stock up on “life experience” to portray all kinds of emotions if you know what i mean:P i have no problem w/ JDY exercising her right to have a sex life outside marriage, as long as it’s not leaving behind a trail of psychologically poisoned Exes, neglected children from unwanted pregnancy, spreading STDs or worse…it’s so socially ingrained in us to hate on women who indulge in sex, while admiring men who do it too. and it ain’t never gonna change, cos egos, identities, comfort zones haven’t been taught to be defined other ways.

I don’t know how 강수연 spells her name in English, but a tolerable rendering would be “Kang Soo-yun.”
Of course, questions like “who is the best actor/actress?” is always subjective question, but I do believe Kang is generally considered among the best Korean actresses and generally considered a better actress than JDY. I also do believe she’s garnered some international recognition for her cinematic work. (I think she won something at Cannes or something almost prestigious a few years ago?)
Her best acting work, however, may have been her incandescent performance in a legendary TV drama called “여인천하” (usually translated as “Women’s World”), where she played one of the most notorious villainess in Korean history. The drama was so popular that it ran over 150 episodes. To this idea, I think that was the best acted Korean drama I’ve ever seen, and Kang’s wasn’t the only sterling performance. Indeed, some (but not me) felt 전인화’s performance was even superior–though in my opinion, 전 gets more credit for her acting than she deserves due to her sublime beauty.
