Why Korea can’t stop yapping about “Money Warfare”

0529-money-warfare2.jpg

Money Warfare is on it’s way of becoming “gook min” (national) drama. Why? First of all, it has top class actors (Park Shin Yang and Shin Don Wook) and actresses (Park Jin Hee and Kim Jung Hwa) who all look so pretty on screen and are talented enough to make you fall in love with the characters. And the story line revolving around debt, loan sharks, money and power hit the cords of many Koreans who also feel trapped in their own Money Warfare. With 28.8% Nielsen ratings - there’s no doubt in my mind that Money Warfare will become a “gook min” drama in the near future.

Beacuse of your article, I watched the first 2 episodes. Besides Shin Dongwook’s hair(It’s huge!), it looks to be a good drama. Thanks for posting. Now I have something to look forward to!

agreed - shin dong wook needs to get a better hair stylist for sure
first it was the headband in the drama “soulmate” and now, the long - i wanna be a rock star - length hair…why can’t they do something good with his hair for a change?

Sorry if this is a silly questions, but is the Nielsen company really surveying the TV ratings in Korea?

Also, another question, what’s the airtime duration of the dramas on TV? Because when I see the RAW episodes, they all seem to be a little over an hour long (like 1 hour and 3 minutes or something).

So I’m wondering, 1 episode + commercials is how long on TV?

  6. 6 winterscent May 30, 2007 at 4:18 pm

^I think they are usually around an hour and a half. It’s been a while since I watched Korean dramas live but usually there are commercials.

Nielsen is actually a really big firm and surveys tv ratings everywhere so I’d say their results are pretty reliable. A lot of newspapers use their figures.

I concur about SDW’s hair. Gorgeous man but afflicted with bad hair styles. He looks a bit like a lion haha.

PSY is a really good actor. He’s not your usual gorgeous main actor but his acting is solid and convincing. The supporting are all pretty good too. How can anyone not watch this drama?

    Thanks winterscent!

Korean dramas are not interrupted by commercials in between - in fact one of the reasons why I love Korean dramas is that you get a full hour of enjoyment without interruption (they only have commercials before and after the drama)

AC Nielsen is a huge company and they do measure ratings in Korea, but as many of you already know, their methodology is really outdated, which invites a lot of criticisms

Well, you’ve persuaded me to trudge over to the BDO store to get this, so I am holding you responsible if it sucks!

  10. 10 yriami May 31, 2007 at 5:31 am

what is the name of this drama again? please

  11. 11 Anne May 31, 2007 at 6:01 am

Huh? The title of the drama is in the subject and post — Money Warfare (War of Money) - 쩐의 전쟁

  12. 12 popseoul May 31, 2007 at 10:21 am

Gaek, you won’t regret it, it’s truly a well-made drama
FYI, the drama is based on a popular comic series

Anne, I don’t get your comment…what do you mean?

  13. 13 teabag May 31, 2007 at 5:34 pm

I love this drama!! The story is so GOOD by the minute, but I have to agree that Shin needs cut his brush-up hair!!! Get a scissor and trim that so you’ll look like a cutie pie like you were in Cloud Stairway!!

  14. 14 Anne May 31, 2007 at 8:37 pm

popseoul, my comment is in response to yriami’s question. should’ve specify the name..

  15. 15 Gaek June 1, 2007 at 9:12 am

    Popseoul,

I finished the first episode, and it was indeed good. This says a lot, because in general I prefer saguks, and the rare times I watch non-saguks, it’s because the contemporary drama stars actors I like. Neither is the case here.

I think I will follow this drama for a bit. This and the new upcoming Song Ilguk drama about lobbyists probably fulfills my quote of 2 non-saguk dramas for this year :)

  16. 16 Gaek July 6, 2007 at 1:42 pm

What an absolutely ridiculous final episode–even by the standards of Korean dramas!

  17. 17 vahnzenqi July 18, 2007 at 11:17 am

I watched this series because of Kim Jung Hwa.
I don’t expect it to be such a great series.
But then after few of episodes, it turn out to be one of the big hit series of this year.

I highly recommend this drama. The drama is really good so far (currently watching Ep. 8) thanks to the excellent storyline and cast esp PSY. He’s a great actor with lots of charisma-one of my favourite Korean actors!

i did like this drama - it’s exciting and quite different from the other kdramas i’ve seen and also because i’m a huge fan of both Park Shin Yang & Shin Dong Wook! They’re both excellent! I agree with shinjungwon - the ending of this drama was not to my anticipation at all! Bonus Round 4 episodes were good too!

  21. 21 shinjungwon September 6, 2007 at 11:27 am

yea. i liked the bonus round. shin dong wook and park shin yang were on the same side for a while…

Park Shin Yang!!!!! i love my oppa!
    everybody loves this oppa!!
And his drama “WAR of MONEY” is a must-watch!
probably the greatest greatest greatest masterpiece of 2007!
no exaggeration! first of all, PSY is great.
    then, the storyline is great.
what more could i ask for?!

  25. 25 daewanghumamaroxy November 15, 2007 at 7:04 pm

War of Money is REAAAAALLY GREAT! No questions asked!

Park Shin Yang’s at his BEST AND MOST DIFFERENT!

  26. 26 gagaoverhallyu December 21, 2007 at 12:00 pm

Have not seen “War of Money” yet but I believe everybody who says it is excellent. Anyway, just on a side note - did you know PSY went to the United States recently to the University of Georgia in Athens (UGA) and gave a talk to students there about his work as an actor in Korea. You can you-tube it. He was admirable in his effort to deliver part of his speech in English (with the help of a professor/interpreter). I won’t be surprised if very soon he will be breaking into the American movie industry. Let’s wish him all the good fortune!

  27. 27 Angelic March 13, 2008 at 2:12 am
