Is Hyori really volunteering in Ethiopia?

0614-hyori-volunteer.jpg
Hyori announced that she will volunteer in Ethiopia to help out the kids living in poverty for about ten days, but here’s the catch. The sexy diva’s entire Ethiopian experience will be filmed by KBS and will air as part of Love Request show. When will Hyori learn that if she really wanted to volunteer and use her experience as a publicity stunt, she should not announce her grand plan beforehand? Instead she should’ve just flown to Ethiopia, did her nice deed – keep tight lipped about it until it somebody accidentally mention that her dark skin was the result of all her hard work under the Ethiopian sun and not because of tanning lotion overdose. Since she announced her plans before the fact, the public is quite skeptical about Hyori’s real intentions of volunteering. Aren’t you?

*Volunteering in Ethiopia was recommended by Shin Ae Ra and actor Jo Min Ki & Hyori’s manager are expected to accompany her to Ethiopia.

    hmmmm… i’m a fan of hyori…but it seems like a publicity stunt…

  2. 2 jane =] June 14, 2007 at 8:29 am

im guessing your not a fan of hyori, you show it in every post. as a writer, you shouldnt be biased.

  3. 3 Toya T June 14, 2007 at 8:42 am

No matter the reason, if she is really going and will actually do some real volunteer work, then as long as there is some benefit to the kids, then it should be fine. Let’s face it, she is not the first celebrity to do this, and she definitely will not be the last…

  4. 4 joyce June 14, 2007 at 9:27 am

    i agree with Toya T
hyori isnt the first celebrity to do so.. whether it be a publicity stunt or not..
at least some people will benefit on her actions..

by the way.. she should follow the likes of cha in pyo and shin ae ra.. they really dont announce their charity events to the world, and they relly do it

  5. 5 SWILLIAMS June 14, 2007 at 9:35 am

Well at least Hyori is going. In order to experience the world one needs to step outside of their comfort zone. i read a Korean-English Dictionary and can one guess what Africa stood for. Africa means where lions live. Now that is stupidty beyond comprehension as lions live all over the world some at zoos.
So let Hyori do what she must whether its publicity or not because she is doing it whereas everybody sits back and stays skeptical or ignorant and I dont mean ignorance in a good way.

  6. 6 Lulu June 14, 2007 at 9:56 am

Meh, good for her, publicity stunt or not. People are always skeptical when stars wanna do something good for other people. The fact is, whether they’re doing it for their own popularity or whatever, they’re actually doing something. >.>; Can’t say much for anyone else~ so props to her.

  7. 7 lucy June 14, 2007 at 10:03 am

    You’re kidding me right?
Hyori has done plenty of charity work before this, including donating money to orphanages and hospitals.
A few years ago, she held a public auction of her clothes/accessories from various CFs and what not, with all the money going to children in North Korea.
When someone like Oprah goes over to South Africa with a camera crew, it’s all “awww” but when HYORI does it, oh no, she must have some ulterior motive o_o.
PLUS she’s not going by herself, she’s going with another actor.
If anyone seriously doubts Hyori’s intentions, then take a look at yourself, and see how YOU’VE given back to society lately.
PLUS Hyori’s got nothing to PUBLICISE. No upcoming albums, dramas, nothing.
Haters will use any excuse to hate though, right? Even if it’s making ridiculous false accusations?

  8. 8 lucy June 14, 2007 at 10:09 am

Oh, BTW, joyce – this charity mission with Hyori and the other actor is ORGANISED by ChaInPyo & ShinAeRa.
Hyori’s worked with them before o_o. But it’s not well known because she didn’t use it as a publicity stunt, even though she was promoting her album at the time.

  9. 9 Eve June 14, 2007 at 10:29 am

Well who cares if it’s a publicity stunt…at least people will see what’s going on in Africa and no natter how much exposure she gets, she’s going to be helping people.

  10. 10 aiturnizzle June 14, 2007 at 10:38 am

Ugh she doesn’t seem the type to actually really care about underprivelaged kids, so this kind of news really disgusts me.

  11. 11 monalisa June 14, 2007 at 10:53 am

I think the reason to film her Ethiopian stint is to make people aware of the children’s plights and to encourage other celebrities to do the same. It is actually for a good cause.

  12. 12 cjlatina June 14, 2007 at 11:37 am

i think any volunteer work is good even if it’s a publicty stunt. it is still giving the cause some attention that other wise it wouldn’t have. in the photo above i actually think she looks pretty, but i do agree she needs to lay off the sun tanning lotion a little bit.

  13. 13 joyce June 14, 2007 at 11:39 am

lucy – i didnt notice that part..
    was that added later??
as i have posted earlier, publicity or not, it is still for a good cause

  14. 14 Lyna June 14, 2007 at 11:59 am

    It’s hard being managers ;o;

  15. 15 Stella June 14, 2007 at 12:04 pm

As an African, the rational part of me applauds her for caring enough to go on this mission. Not many people in the world care enough about what is happening on the African Continent, so she should be commended. However what I detest is people, celebrity or not, who go to Africa to ‘help’ because they want to come off to the general public as some very generous person. The true meaning of giving is when we expect nothing back. I guess none of us will never know what Hyori’s motivation until we actually talk to her.

  16. 16 amabelle June 14, 2007 at 12:54 pm

    lol. whatever the case is..
    this blog made me laugh.
popseoul gave a good logic behind the tan.
    thats funny.

    im still undecided..
i dont know if i still like her or what..
its on the tippy tippy end..

  17. 17 Narae June 14, 2007 at 3:12 pm

what benefits will she bring to the kids?? Come on people, give me a break! U can’t just wake up one morning and say “i will volunteer in Africa”! I’m pretty sure she’s never been near that continent before. She wants to portray the sexy-pop-diva that wants to be filmed helping poor people in a rough environment so that we can see how caring she is…*throws up my diner”. I don’t think she got the Angelina Jolie syndrome so for me, this is ALL FAKE!

  18. 18 han June 14, 2007 at 6:55 pm

    ^so what if it’s fake?
next thing you know is her fans are going to be donating to these kids and i’m sure she’s not going there without food or medicines to donate..at least she’ll be helping a little, if not more..
if jolie is that good then she should’ve stayed low-profile but she didn’t, did she?
she wanted to show the world how good a person she is by adopting kids all around the world, after stealing someone else’s husband?
    leave hyori alone
even if it was for publicity it’s her company that’s making her do it

btw is it just me or she looks like a darker han hyo joo in that picture

  19. 19 Ella June 14, 2007 at 11:22 pm

Africa is a country that is always in need of help.
But it is ‘overrated’ with the celebrities going there for charity.
You know what would’ve really IMPRESSED me? If Hyori didn’t have to mention to the damn public that she ‘wants’ to ‘help.’
    For me, JUST DO IT.

  20. 20 Di June 14, 2007 at 11:27 pm

Let’s just hope she actually DOES something instead of sitting on her ass, looking pretty while applying more suntan lotion.

  21. 21 the count June 15, 2007 at 12:08 am

Ella, Africa is not a country, it is a continent. And unfortunately a lot of the problems in Africa are exactly because of all the aid we send. How can local farmers grow food to sell when the US goes in and distributes food for free? That destroys local agricultural industry and prevents them from becoming self-sufficient on food. Just to pick one example. The same problem occurs in other industries. All our aid is killing them.

Well, at least where the aid gets through at all. You also have so much political corruption, and a fair amount of aid we send ends up going to line to pockets of dictators who use the wealth to oppress the people there rather than help them.

We’re doing a lot to destroy Africa in our attempts to help them. It’s all very sad. And rather than recognize the damage we’re doing, we blithely just send more aid and exaggerate the problem even further.

  22. 22 Di June 15, 2007 at 12:16 am

The Count makes a good point. Also, aren’t there a lot of poor/needy, orphaned children in Korea? Why don’t celebrities help the poor in their own countries before going off to some other place first?

  23. 23 amabelle June 15, 2007 at 2:39 am

we have to admit that there at benefits and positive aspects with this..

its just that it reflects badly on her character..
and the fact that it had to be “recommended”..
    ummm.. questionable character?

  24. 24 mawee June 15, 2007 at 4:08 am

I can believe Shin Ae Ra coz I know how generoues she is.. Hyori?? :(
    dunno..

  25. 25 jane =] June 15, 2007 at 11:03 am

Narae- of course she’ll bring benefits to the kids are you an idiot? she’s auctioning off some of her stuff that fans will buy for a lot of money, and shes using it to aid and donate it to kids in Africa. thats not beneficial? obviously, she didnt just wake up and say she was going to volunteer in Africa. im sure that for this kind of trip, she’s been planning for days or months. anyways, im sure she’s doing more than you’ll ever do so dont be a hypocrite and please do us all a favor. shut it.
mawee- do you know shin ae ra? do you know hyori? how are you judging how “generous” they are? just cause hyori’s a sexy gasoo and shes believed not to be “conservative”, you judge her on how she dances and not her personality? uhm, ok.

  26. 26 Lena June 15, 2007 at 1:48 pm

Jane dear, you can’t possibly use Oprah as a comparison. As a result of Oprahs abusive and neglected childhood, she’s grown to become a loving and caring person. She reaches out to those who need help out of the kindness of her heart, and she has a long track record of doing so. That’s just who Oprah is, that’s why so many people respect and commend her.

A lot of people assume that celebrities contributing to others is another means of publicity; I strongly disagree. There have been numerous amounts of celebrities who donate money, time and effort to organizations that they are passionate about. Most of the time the public isn’t aware of this because it isn’t announced to the world. I fully respect these types of celebrities.

Now, I’m not a fan of Hyori nor do I dislike her; my comment is merely based on facts that i’ve gathered pertaining to her.

To me she doesn’t come off as the heartless type. I’m just a bit skeptical as to whether she would be doing this without the exaggerated publicity hype. As in; no cameras, no prior announcement, but i highly doubt this since in the blog it states that this was recommended to her.

Jane, I find it a bit rude that you’re telling others to shut up when they’re just expressing their point of views, just like what you’re doing.

Not everyone in life is going to agree with your perspectives, and if you expect them to; then you’re in for a lot of disappointment throughout your life. More or less just be happy that our world is filled with so much diversity and different thoughts. Smile and accept it, no point in getting aggravated.

you’ve just got to take the good with the bad, and realize that life goes on.

I believe that everyone has the potential to make a difference in this world. So you shouldn’t say that “Narae” isn’t capable of doing better than hyori, don’t be so quick to judge. Weren’t you just telling “Mawee” the same thing?

I, for one, love reading Popseoul. Maybe, since you think it’s so biased, you should try another site?

    ciao,
    lalalalena

  27. 27 cori June 15, 2007 at 3:38 pm

I’m kinda on the fence about this, i mean it’s good that she’s trying and willing to help out, but it does seem like a publicity stunt.

Kudos to lena. that was kinda inspirational ^▽^ !!

  28. 28 joan June 15, 2007 at 9:06 pm

obviously she did it 4 publicity

  29. 29 minki June 16, 2007 at 12:02 am

wat if she did it for publicity?
I mean at least she does something, better than other celeb who do nothing.
Going to ethiopia isn’t easy at all.
She can stay in seoul and donate money for charity,
then annouce to the world that she does something good.
Instead she choose to go to ethiopia.
Maybe that come from the bottom of her heart.
and ppl juz bash about her?

  30. 30 christianpete June 16, 2007 at 12:48 am

if a celebrity never volunteers for charities, then critics (anti-fans) are quick to label them as selfish. But if the same celeb starts to get involve in charity work, then their critics will say its for publicity. You can never please a critic, no matter how good a deed is, no matter how sincere your intentions. The haters will always find fault (its how the negative mind operates).

As someone mentioned earlier, Hyori has actively participated in several charities throughout her career. So helping the needy is not a new experience for her (read about some of her many donations at soompi).
Hyori doesn’t need to prove to anyone that her heart is in the right place…. Hyori’s critics couldn’t stop her from doing good deeds in the past, and there is no doubt they won’t be able to stop her this time either. ;)

  31. 31 sera June 16, 2007 at 1:46 pm

popseoul thinks hyori is fond of publicity. and i also think she is. there is no need to publicise if the intention to help is pure. the public will just notice good deeds. no need to shout that you’re going to a nation of the underprevilige.

  32. 32 jane =] June 16, 2007 at 1:48 pm

    Lena deary,
first of all, i never compared oprah to lee hyori so please get your facts straight. oh and quite frankly, i dont care whether you think im rude or not. im EXPRESSING my opinions, as you said so i’ll be rude if i want to be. thanks for giving me an awesome lecture about how life goes on and how not everyones going to agree with me shit. hm, i think i know that? when did i ever tell anyone to agree with me? i was simply answering the questions that Narae “asked” us by using common sense.
also, hyori has been donating to charities for a while, as it has been already mentioned. this wasnt known by most of the public either, than does she “gain your respect” now? be happy that “our world is filled with so much diversity and different thoughts”? please, dont make me laugh. what do you think caused discrimination and wars?
“I believe that everyone has the potential to make a difference in this world” aw thats so sweet. too bad people dont choose to make a difference in this world. if you think so, your in for a lot of disappointment throughout your life.
P.S. popseoul- seriously, i didn’t want to bash because i love this site and this is where i get most of my news and gossip. but can you make it more obvious that you like/dont like a certain entertainer? sarcasm may be funny but when it crosses over the line, it becomes rude. is this considered “costructive critisism”?, or is it too malicious for you.

  33. 33 popseoul June 16, 2007 at 8:33 pm

    jane =]
We are expressing our opinions in our posts – just like you are expressing your opinions in our comment section.

    To quote your words…
“i dont care whether you think im rude or not. im EXPRESSING my opinions” – the same goes for us.

  34. 34 jane =] June 16, 2007 at 11:49 pm

haha ok popseoul. do whatever you want. all you do is rip off information/news from other sources anyways. i shouldnt criticize a “writer” from a gossip site anyways, it wont matter. i apologize

  35. 35 Madonna Jolie Copycat July 8, 2007 at 6:08 pm

Wow very original going to Ethiopia, what’s next adopting and little Ethiopian child.

  36. 36 christianpete July 8, 2007 at 6:49 pm

what proof do you have that Hyori was influenced by either madonna or angelina?

Before madonna and jolie there were dozens of other celebs who have done charity work in Africa, so are madonna and jolie copy cats too?

  37. 37 confuzed christianpete July 8, 2007 at 7:34 pm

You just admitted Hyori’s trip to Ethiopia is unoriginal and its been done by other other celebs.

You miss the point, Madonna/Jolie are just recent examples, of celebs that have copied an old idea, or shall we say a trend of charitable work for publicity.

Why not take on a new cause/charity and be original. The photo op (photo opportunity as called in the entertainment business) of a celeb being surrounded by poor starving children is a guaranteed tear jerker.

But as we all know, Hyori’s career is on the downslide, so let’s see what she’ll do next to keep her career a float.

Let’s focus on the issue christianpete, not on Hyori’s bod. Remember thoughts are also sinful. Get grip on yourself.

  38. 38 christianpete July 8, 2007 at 8:47 pm

flash21, copycat, or whatever lame nickname you go by, who cares if a charity has already been done before! Who cares if a good deed is original or not? Should celebs avoid participating in a particular cause just because another celeb has done it already? Lest they be labled “unoriginal” by cynical haters like you? Your reasoning is absurd.

I also made the point in another post – there is NOTHING wrong with a celeb using their fame to promote a cause. Western celebs do this all the time (eg. bono and clooney).

Also, Hyori has a new album out, so you will hear a lot more of her in months to come. Hopefully the increased media exposure of Hyori will cause you more discomfort and distress …. :-P

“lets focus on the issue……not on Hyori’s bod”. When did I mention Hyori’s figure in my last respose to you?…. Yes, certain thoughts can be sinful, such as the dark negative thoughts of jealousy and hatred you have for Hyori.

  39. 39 joan July 8, 2007 at 9:07 pm

ChristianPete get a grip on yourself. Geez, one little comment regarding Hyori as a Madonna/Jolie Copycat and you get whacked out of shape.

You act like Hyori’s your girlfriend friend or something. That’s some weird sycho sh t you’re dealing with. Hope you don’t have posters of Hyori all over your bedroom. Jizzle Wizzle.

  40. 40 confuzed christianpete aka peter July 8, 2007 at 9:14 pm

Dude – I just made a comment. Joan’s right you’re bizarre. I’m actually a Hyori fan, I just expect more from her, than copying everyone else.

    PS. You’re a freak!!!!

  41. 41 christianpete July 9, 2007 at 10:58 am

joan? confuzed? Haha! More aliases? I suspect you might be suffering from a type of multiple-personality disorder.

your “little comment” was an illogical and unfair attack on Hyori. As a genuine fan of Hyori it was necessary for me to challenge your BS…. Your the freak who makes up different user names and have them talk to each other. Thats really psycho! You’re probably the same one who used different nicknames to attack a single user in the Honey Lee posts.

  42. 42 anonymous August 9, 2007 at 5:11 am

i doubt she did it for publicity…. its very trying to fly all the way there and help build huts out of shit n stuff… so u gotta really wana do it to actually go… anyways, hyori is uber hot and hot asian girls get to do anything XD
