An undergraduate student majoring in information systems hacked into BoA’s cyworld mini-hompy and found discriminating pictures of her and Danny (ex-g.o.d member). Instead of sharing that picture with rest of us, this low life yet clever hacker blackmailed SM and received 35 million won (US$35,000) in return. Those pictures must be really telling if SM coughed up that much money, but their official reason was “in an attempt to catch the guy.” SM also added that he threatened to spread false rumors about BoA if they didn’t pay up.
But if BoA and Danny were in fact nothing but friends, why did SM pay him to shut him up, while Sidus IHQ didn’t even budge when they received the same threat via email requesting more money? Instead Sidus called the police immediately. Perhaps the picture does more harm to BoA than Danny? Anyhow, the good news is that this cyber-terrorist was caught yesterday and is now behind bars. I guess he wasn’t so clever after all.

I guess some people (like BoA, Jiyoon, et al.) underestimate the abilities of some cyber-terrorist. These hackers can even access highly restricted government servers, so getting into someones myspace or cy wouldn’t really be that difficult for them. Thats why I never upload any private info (or potentially embarrassing pics, hehe :p ) to my cyworld, since no website is 100% hacker proof.

i mean, the hacker sucks, but it’s ultimately boa’s fault because she was stupid enough to put those pics up at all. i mean, i know people who could have hacked into cyworld if they cared enough. there are bound to be people out there who DO care enough and have the abilities to do so.

gaek, identity theft can happen to anyone – the famous and the unknown. Sensitive data can be extracted from these community sites and used for criminal purposes. Embarrassing photos can be used for blackmailing and cyber-smearing…. The attitude of “only the famous people need to worry about cyber-terrorism” is a foolish position to have, its being ignorant to the harm it can do to anyones reputation and finances. The average “Joe Blow” is not immune from this type of crime.

I think the blame would have to go to Boa. Why would she ever post scandalous pictures on the internet? Even saving it on a computer is not safe..putting them online is no safer. But these things happen…I think celebrities just need to be for careful next time…

I talked about this issue with students the other day. Seeing as how the pics weren’t all that scandalous, I wasn’t quite sure what all the fuss was about. My students explained that for a lot of younger celebs, being single and available… whoops, I mean, *the image* of being single and available is very important. Their crazed fans will go ape-shit bonkers if their one and only has been taken by someone else.
That’s why seemingly innocuous photos like Boa sitting on the sofa with some has-been pop star could be so damaging.
