No one can deny that reality tv has become a part of the pop culture, regardless of which country you live in. Various versions of American Idols are everywhere and new reality shows air every other weekend and Korea is no exception, with the latest being 200 Pounds Beauty reality show. Yes, some ugly fat girl is going under the knife to make herself pretty so she can debut as a pop-star in Korea and interested viewers can tune in to watch her evolve from beast to beauty within months. And guess who this lucky girl is?
It’s comedian Kim Mi Ryu, who’s famous for the Kim Ki Sa~~ (Driver Kim) punch line. And I’m 100% against her on this. I just don’t understand why she’s crossing over to the pop-world. She’s a talented comedian and it would be a waste to see her struggle in the pop-world with her not so talented voice. Ironically, Kim’s reps are trying to down play the fake beauty aspect by assuring us that she only had lipo done. Now that’s just silly. Either do it all the way or don’t do it at all! Now, who’s going to watch this half-baked reality show?

I liked the movie, but I think this is a really dumb idea. While I’m not opposed to plastic surgery, this girl isn’t nearly heavy enough to have to undergo plastic surgery to lose weight. What happened to the days of diet and excercise?

That’s a dumb idea, promote plastic surgery for people who want to loose weight or “look prettier”. I don’t think she should become a pop star. I mean, everyone in Korea (who watches the show) will know she got surgery… She’s better off a comedian.
I think that if they do this show it wouldbe much better to use a normanl everyday person who has a dream to be famous singer, not someone who is already known in the media..i think that in reality shows people look to others like them to relate to and i dont think that this show will be a big success with the person its about…otherwise i was kinda into the idea if it was to not be too boring…

she has a decent voice but this show isn’t going to do much for her. i think since people are kind of against this idea of the show she canceled her press conference appearence .

Eh, some of it is styling. When she was doing the Kim Kisa bit, they dressed her like a rich old lady, so she looked fatter. She was maybe a size 6 tops. She actually has a decent voice. I saw her on 1000 Challenge Songs and she performed as well if not better than the stars who were actually “singers”. and she was originally scouted by her entertainment company for her voice. I’m not sure why they ultimately put her out as a gag(wo)man. It’s not as if most pop stars are naturally pretty or thin in the K-pop market.
