Can Park Jun Hyung make it in the US?

0630-park-jun-hyung.jpg

Park Jun Hyung, ex-member of a disbanded group g.o.d is finally making a come-back, but not as a rapper but as an actor! I will be the first to admit that I didn’t see that coming at all, but it gets better. He plans to do it in the states. I guess that works since he’s a gyopo, but I really wonder what kind of roles he would be playing. US isn’t the best place for Asian actors to kick off their acting career and he doesn’t exactly excel in the looks department, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see if he’s got talent. Nothing is confirmed yet, but he has been visiting the states frequently to prepare for his acting debut. Can Park Jun Hyung make it in the states or is this just another hyped up PR?

    whats a gyopo?

anyways i agree its very hard for asian’s to make it in the U.S. I wish the best for him though.

    gyopo = foreign born/raised korean

his english isn’t all that great either… and as far as I’m aware, he only seems to speak in korean-rapper language anyway

  3. 3 penny June 30, 2007 at 2:04 pm

isn’t he old? i think he’s like in his mid 30’s..haha well he should of got some acting experience in Korean before jumping arcoss the ocean to America..

  4. 4 Dovey June 30, 2007 at 2:32 pm

I’ve never heard of him. O_O I’m pretty sure tons of Americans would say the same thing as me. However, I do want him to have success here in the states if he decides to act. Looks alone doesn’t make an actor good, especially if he/she can’t act!

  5. 5 OMG! June 30, 2007 at 3:04 pm

aaaahahahahahahaha! *gasp* aaaahahahahahahahahaha! *gasp* aaaahahahahahahahaha! yeah. right. moron. he can’t even speak english right. have ya’ll ever heard him talk? his vocabulary consists of “yo man” “wassup” “yeah yeah”. idiot.

  7. 7 han June 30, 2007 at 3:52 pm

    he’s korean american, isn’t he?
    he really doesn’t look asian to me..and he’s like, so gangsta & ghetto-ish… =P
    i saw him act before…he sucked…but if he’s got a role in a hollywood movie, i guess his acting’s improved? O.O
i think he can only land the bad guy roles though…

  8. 8 liquidhope June 30, 2007 at 4:42 pm

  13. 13 luminality June 30, 2007 at 10:09 pm

actually…he has perfect english and can’t really speak korean that well although he’s improved over the years. he’s actually quite old now too. well, good luck to him!

  14. 14 Se7enFan June 30, 2007 at 10:36 pm

  15. 15 lennie June 30, 2007 at 10:38 pm

agree with David up there… and um. i love g.o.d and all, but i practically cringed when i read this… i don’t know. i can’t really see him being a leading man in any movie.. eh. we’ll see… i guess…

  16. 16 Eve July 1, 2007 at 2:10 am

Um I think he can speak English normally, I’ve heard it. I guess that’s just how he talks on a regular basis but acting requires you to change your normal way of talking to what the script says. I can see him doing okay maybe…hope he finds some good roles.

  17. 17 ed July 1, 2007 at 2:20 am

good luck to him, but there’s a reason daniel henney’s starting out in asia toots:D

  18. 18 Dez July 1, 2007 at 2:57 am

You know… I’m not too sure. I’ve never seen him act, but the movie business in America is rough. If you’re not an outstanding actor, you’ve got to atleast be good looking… and it’s not looking to me like he has either.

Maybe he’ll make it. But I have a feeling he’ll be playing seriously minor roles for a long time. And this is based on the assumption that he can speak English fluently and without too heavy of an accent.

Joon speaks English perfectly. He lived in the USA for 30+ years. Its his korean thats a bit lacking.
As for his rap english, isn’t that what’s expected in korean music?
As a non-asian, I think he looks like a manly asian guy. Much better than a lot of the pretty-boy asian celebrities.
Best wishes to Joon on this new career move. I’m sure he’ll find success.

  20. 20 SF July 1, 2007 at 5:05 am

I agree with rose….I think this dude has a better chance of acting in America than a lot of other people.

Anyway, Americans tend to favor the “unusual” or “VERY asian” look. Hence Rain with his bitty eyes ^_^ and just about every other Asian actor other there – even the girls. America doesn’t have the same standard of Asian beauty as Asians do….I think for Americans, the smaller the eyes, higher the cheekbones, and the more Asian aka Exotic you look the better. Esp for guys, DDKim in LOST his the smallest eyes I’ve seen in awhile. And Sandra Oh is doing quite well for herself here but I don’t know if there is a single Asian TV station that would’ve let her wi/in 100 yrds of them when she was just starting. park is pretty ‘different’ looking so maybe, so different maybe he won’t get stuck in those typical “token Asian” roles and really make it….

Plus – his English is good. It’s his Korean that sucks ^_^

  21. 21 jane =] July 1, 2007 at 5:40 am

so he is the guy that speaks english well, hope he does good in the states..

  22. 22 wink0o0 July 1, 2007 at 5:41 am

he could make it..but thats not a very high chance because u see very little asian actors n actresses n America..im pretty sure hell get a small role, but i doubt that hell be playin a major role..out of all the movies ive seen..i dont see that much asian actors or sctresses..its really hard especially if ur english is not so good, but his english is good..ive heard him spoke english before..that bad..

  23. 23 Tina July 1, 2007 at 11:18 pm

    @SF:

Totally agree! I’ve got a lot of my friends to watch kdramas (and even any regular Asian dramas and movies) and all of them were SHOCKED by how hot the actors and actresses were.

It’s like they didn’t realize Asians could “look like that” because in their minds they’ve only seen very stereotypical images of Asians.

  24. 24 Rach July 2, 2007 at 7:59 am

I have never seen him act before. & his talking voice used to bug me a lot (although it does work with the G.O.D. raps). However, I am rooting for him since I’m a G.O.D. junkie. He might have a chance. I mean, again I’ve never seen his acting before so maybe under all that is an Oscar worthy actor. Just as long as he doesn’t go to an audition rocking (or at least trying) the blonde. O.O

Maybe with all the crossovers happening now the Hollywood people will start to panic and just let them all in. Or just pass them over to John Woo who’ll make them his ninjas who take care of his doves. Ah, Hollywood. How discriminating can you be?

  25. 25 jane July 4, 2007 at 10:16 am

at least he can speak english fluently yeah?

  26. 26 keyle August 26, 2007 at 1:31 am

  27. 28 sandy October 4, 2007 at 7:33 am

wow here in the states i donno it might take him longer then he thinks….hollywood dont just take anyone. you gots to be really talented to actually get in.

  28. 29 neongreenpeas December 19, 2007 at 11:46 am

hmm… i dont know… i guess good luck… but i thought he was born in korea… i remember all ass time ago… on a talk show… he went to the states when he was young… and thus began us language… thing.. anyways… good luck… i guess…

  29. 30 Mannan December 22, 2007 at 7:52 pm

If one’s gonna have a good chance in the US after Speed Racer, I think Joon Hyng is gonna win a WAY BETTER chance than Bi ..

    First Bi’s really bad in english, but Joon Hyung is fluent .. & about the looks, I’m not asian, so I’ve seen how people often pull their eyes sideways saying “You like people who look like this?” when they know I love Korea .. I see they would think Joon Hyung looks way~ better than Bi .. Non asians don’t like how asian men have that soft skin, with their silky hair, and cute looks and acts .. Joon Hyung doesn’t look like this, PLUS, he has bigger muscles ^^;;

    ANYWAYS~~~~~~~~
GOOD LUCK JOON HYUNG OPPA~~ *^^*

  30. 31 pink July 30, 2008 at 1:00 am

I think he has a good chance of making it. He has a very interesting look. He has the rugged asian thing going on. He could play warrior, gangster, business tycoon, comic character.

He has a much better chance in Hollywood than the current pretty boy soap stars types in Korea. Not only that but he actually speaks English! He is much more handsome to Americans than someone like Rain obviously.

  31. 32 lalala September 7, 2009 at 7:06 am

seriously whoever thinks he can’t speak english correct obviously can’t speak correct themselves! but i wish him the best! he’s sings so well. haha i love his rapper personality, he’s so funny. but i wish him the best. and Park Joon Hyung oppa fighting! [he does really have a better chance than Bi]
