Psy has to go back to the army

0703psy.jpg
Psy (30) has to go back to the military for 20 months to re-serve since he failed to do a satisfactory job the first time around. This is the first time a celeb has to go back to the army to re-serve and what an embarrassment and waste of time for Psy! He might start his services as early as August.

I don’t know. More than anything, I think this shows how much of a societal waste of time compulsory military service is, how much of a drain of human resources this is for males in their prime productive years, and just how far anyone will go to avoid it, if possible.

And if we’re bean-counting who did what, or who did or didn’t serve properly, I’d love to see a socio-economic study of the backgrounds of all the people I know who went to gundae but essentially work 9-5 cushy jobs and go to Myeongdong with their girlfriends on the weekends, and who’s out near the DMZ freezing their asses off. I bet my bottom dollars it would be an embarrassing study.

Point is, the system is stupid, and a waste of time. And the conscripted soldiers aren’t that good, anyway. Korea should bite the bullet, make a professional military, and end the cycle of “I went, so you have to, too.” That’s not the basis for having every male in the country drop what they’re doing and go do what professional soldiers should be doing, anyway.

I like Psy, and I think he probably tried to shirk some duties. I’d say that this is pretty common, to the extent that one has the ability to pull strings, can get out for random “medical reasons” and pull a desk job in the middle of Seoul, or myriad other ways to not end up in YangYang walking on the beach with an M-16 for nearly two years while your girlfriend sogaetings her way out of your life.

Poor Psy. I hope he finds something interesting to do while conscripted; yet, since this is all such a public display of frustration at shirking military duty, he’s probably gonna get assigned something pretty undesirable.

While people are getting their panties in a bunch because of people trying to get out of the Army, they seem to be forgetting the sheer ridiculousness of people doing societally useful things suddenly stopping what they’re doing and performing menial and irrelevant duties.

Basically, Korean men are paying the price, with their bodies, for politicians and the populace not bucking up and putting up the taxes/funds to form a professional military that would be much better at defense, anyway.

Ask any KATUSA who has served in both the Korean Army while working with American soldiers, and they’ll tell you the exact same thing. Or nearly any Korean man who has served recently. This is more a game of “I did, so you have to.” It’s not even good for the country in terms of defense.

It’s basically a continuous hazing party that seems to never end.

hmmm..interesting way to look at it metropolitician.

I just feel like this guy never gets a break…
I think he’s a smart guy (smart enough to fool everyone into thinking he went to UC Berkeley)and I’m sure he has his own opinions about some of his own actions. But, I hate the fact that he’s always apologizing for things he would have done anyway. He acts like such a revolutionary psycho freak with lots of interesting opinions but when he has the opportunity to express his ideas he shrinks away…

    well written, Metropolitician. Bravo.

  6. 6 BeSerious July 4, 2007 at 4:01 am

    Be Serious.
We’re not discussing whether the system of mandatory army service should or should not be banished. That’s beyond this discussion and beyond our scope of understanding.
The damn point is that this man, celebrity or not, tried to step around his army duties.
This isn’t rolling of the dice, this is a train and its fixed destination.
No one here is the victim.

BeSerious, is that your little thing? writing “Be Serious.” before your main comment? haha, sorry i just find it amusing.

    that sucks for him
but he should have done a better job the first time to get his duties over with

interesting thoughts Metropolitician, you seem to know a lot about Korean military. I’m suprised that the army lets people have easy jobs and leave for the weekends. or that these men aren’t trained

celebraties are not the only ones who try to get out of military service. but they shouldn’t get special treatment just b/c they’re famous

oooooooo maybe when he comes back he’ll lost a lot of weigh and have a lil pack going on hehe. Though that really sucks, he couldn’t get away with it.
