Was Rain’s fiasco preventable?

0704-rain-after-interview.jpg

Here are the behind the scene stories that lead up to It’s Raining World Tour’s demise. It was reported that Korean Air decided to discontinue their sponsorship for Rain and his entourage when the contract ended in May. Star M asked Korean Air to extend their sponsorship since they postponed their US concerts, but KA refused since Rain faced many legal battles at the time of negotiations and they weren’t getting the expected return from the sponsorship.

JYP commented that he regrets not teaching Rain English before he debuted, since that’s Rain’s biggest weakness. When Rain made headlines with the Times 100 list last year, he received many requests from tv shows. But when they found out that Rain needed a translator, they all backed away. In addition, according to JYP, it was Rain’s decision to leave JYP. JYP knew that if he asked Rain to stay that he would’ve, but he couldn’t since Rain said that he wanted to make it alone. And let’s not forget about the mediocre concert performances in Hong Kong and Sydney and the cancelled concerts in Canada and all of US.

Now the blame game has started. V2B is blaming Star M for not helping them to obtain the permits and guiding them up setting up the stage while Star M & Rain are blaming the local promoters. I’m sure that this will be all sorted out after dozens of lawsuits, but it seems like there were enough red lights during the last couple of months to warn Rain and his entourage that something was going wrong way before the LA concert was cancelled. So this entire fiasco was preventable, but can Rain make his US crossover a success after he caused himself this much damage?

  2. 2 shelshel July 5, 2007 at 1:30 am

poor rain… his embarassment has increased cos it was preventable…
    ohhh dear rain

  3. 3 ShenYue July 5, 2007 at 1:31 am

Rain already mentioned in an interview that his Music debut has to wait for 2 years in USA, but he didn’t call himself a failure .. i wish if he would do his army for this 2 years and get it out of the way … but he has his acting debut to take care of and all these lawsuits ~

  4. 4 gWen July 5, 2007 at 1:36 am

Rain go back to JYP or get with SM Entertainment or anything but please do something that makes you go up! not bring you down… T_T

  5. 5 Michelle July 5, 2007 at 1:40 am

He left JYP and that’s what made him who he is today. If anything, blames on him.

    JYP’s a smart man. :D

  6. 6 dru July 5, 2007 at 1:50 am

i think if there had been more commnunication with v2b and star m this may have been preventable, and i aslo think that if rain works really hard he really could make it in the us

  7. 7 dru July 5, 2007 at 1:52 am

also im glad that jyp meade a statement, now some of rains fna sthat say jyp kicked rain out and is now trying to sabotage him can be quiet and stop making themselves look dumb

Neway…A friend of mine who works at the orpheum spoke to a V2B Global tech guy, who was involved in the Rain show. The V2B guy told my friend at 4:30pm to tell me not to be too dissapointed if the Concert was cancelled. when asked why he said that he said they couldn’t set up the big center screen, and with the game on the night before they didn’t have enough time to set up. They needed at least 2-3 days. They hadn’t even had the equipment inspected by this point. A fire department official was all ready telling them that they were not going to be able to use a lot of the pyrotechnicks they had in the show and city officials were NOT happy with stage. Too many code violations. They guy (who didn’t really know who Rain was) also told my friend in no uncertain terms that he felt sorry for the singer. His bosses were telling everyone to be VERY hush hush about the whole thing (they didn’t want word of this to spread to the Rain camp) they were trying to fix things.

Apparently when Rain was FINALLY told about this whole mess was around 6:00pm. He was all ready getting dressed and was excited about the show after spending three hours going over the dance moves again with his dancers. Not wanting to cancel the concert he said he would still go out on stage and sing. He didn’t care if the pyro or big screen worked. he wanted to do a sorta accoustic thing. city officials were adamant that the show must be cancelled and would not let him do this. The stage being incomplete anyway they said it would be dangerous to him to do this as well. He then said fine to remove the stage, he would sing just on the basketball court. But to tear down the whole stage, even half would take forever….V2B said no. When Rain tried to go outside to speak with fans, even though he didn’t speak english, security had to hold him back. They were all ready letting everyone know the concert was cancelled and they feared that the fans would tear him apart. (yeah right). This was when he got in a fight with a security guard and was yelling at one of the V2B people in charge.

Soo…long story short my friends connection in V2B was able to clear up and put in order a lot of the rumors that were going around. I would’ve shared all this with you guys earlier but I didn’t want to spread more rumors. Not until I was sure. But since all these rumors were all ready leaked around I decided to put out what this V2B tech guy said happened. My friend didn’t tell me all this until sunday morning. He didn’t really believe that any of this was true…he thought it was too stupid to be real. But there you go.

i think that leaving jyp was bi’s biggest mistake >.

  11. 11 luckyle514 July 5, 2007 at 2:43 am

i didnt know Rain leave the JYP entertainment….and i think that is the biggest mistake he could do rite now……Rain should go back to JYP entertainment….and JYP will Rain get back on stage again….Urggh and i hate those white gezzers, cant accept this stage name(wanted to change to his stage name..and etc) y do they make situation soo complicated

  12. 12 xxcraz_onexx July 5, 2007 at 2:48 am

sigh..i just feel so sorry for him…and thanks shai, clears it up some

i think the reason he wanted to get away from jyp was because jyp controlled EVERYTHING about him…songs were all made by him and stuff
but now, if they are able to design a contract where rain would have more freedom and make more decisions, i think that he should stay with JYP…esp for his US debut

  13. 13 dkfgyriut July 5, 2007 at 2:54 am

xxcraz_onexx do you have any proof that jyp controlled everything, i think not, if anything star m controlled everything and didnt fill rain in on anything

  14. 14 katt July 5, 2007 at 3:30 am

this is all so crazy. rain definitely needs someone to fall back on or else he’s in for more trouble.

i just really hope he doesn’t decide to completely give up on the US, because i would really really love to see him perform.

  15. 15 dwilliams July 5, 2007 at 3:39 am

Well what Rain needs to do is study the American market a little harder and concentrate on his English skills. That is crucial and dont believe the hype, thats when you know you are going downhill fast. He can recover from this but it will take some time.

  16. 16 luvly July 5, 2007 at 3:57 am

who gives a f#*k!!!!! what’s done is done, and people should just stop with the blaming. no one can change the past, so why take the extra energy in trying to figure out if this was preventable or figuring out who’s damn fault it was??!!! personally i’m tired of hearing about rain. i was a fan of his, but officially an anti. i know he won’t make it in the US b/c he can’t even speak in english; se7en wont make it as well… and those other “i wanna be famous in america” korean stars won’t make it in the US if they can’t communicate in english!!!! they should at least taken more time devoting themselves in learning english, instead of wanting to drop themselves off in a foreign country to make more money….

  17. 17 aly July 5, 2007 at 4:58 am

    poor rain
i agree that he should learn english
but honestly i think se7en has a chance since his english english is understandable
its not perfect but its pretty good
but rain needs to learn english if he wants to make it here in the states and leaving JYP was a big mistake
if he wanted to leave then he should have learned english first
but i bet hes gonna go back now

  18. 18 ^_^ July 5, 2007 at 5:30 am

I understand why Rain wanted to leave JYP. I don’t think JYP would fulfill Rain’s bigger ambition. Don’t you guys know that JYP is just a “local” company comparing to SM and whatnot. Rain started his world tour even before the contract ended on May…but StarM was managing his tour. why? did JYP abandoned him even before the contract ended?

  19. 19 dust bunny July 5, 2007 at 8:07 am

That concert sounds about as organized as your local bravo your life happy English Hagwon.

And Rain would be nothing without JYP

  20. 20 J July 5, 2007 at 8:13 am

I still believe in Rain. I don’t know why he would want to leave JYP though? Why leave when the company has brought nothing but blessings to him and has taken him this far. I say stick with them and see it through to the end, or at least until you’ve really become a world famous artist and an American household name. I believe Rain has his fan’s best interests at heart. He knows where his bread is buttered. Unless he wants to quit showbiz and raise a family? Nah!

  21. 21 Lulu July 5, 2007 at 9:46 am

Did he honestly believe he could make it in the US without JYP? I mean, I’m a fan of his and everything, but he needs JYP. He should at least know as much~ :/
    I was debating before if JYP didn’t let Bi resign, or if Bi was the one who left, but if it was Bi’s own ego that caused him to leave, then that’s totally different. I hope he knows that leaving JYP wasn’t the best thing he could’ve done, especially with concerts and legal battles in the air. Not smart at all. >.>;;

  22. 22 toocutedoggy July 5, 2007 at 10:39 am

ahh ya… i think Rain should stayed with JYP no matter what..b/c i think JYP would defense him from all that situation…instead of acting cool wanting to be independent….( i think he just feel like a Dumb***) and i also heard JYP open an office at New york ….

  23. 23 jaenie July 5, 2007 at 11:25 am

OMG…i seriously lost respect for him!
he should have prevented all this from happening when he could have. i happened to be in LA the weekend that he was supposed to have his LA concert (which was like last weekend), and i went shopping and the korean lady said that there were people who drove 2 days straight from oregon to come to his concert…but i found out later that day that he cancelled it. how disappointing. i was a sad and mad for the families/fans that came a long way just to see him perform only to be notified that his concert was cancelled. that’s BS. he should just stay in korea now.

  24. 24 jane =] July 5, 2007 at 11:51 am

wow, throughout all this commotion, rain has seriously lost a lot of fans. either they turned into antis, or they just dont like him very much anymore. i didnt like him much as a singer, but i like him as an actor. fighting~

  25. 25 ed July 5, 2007 at 1:26 pm

rain was smart enough to start his movie career with people at the top like park chan-wook and now the wachowskis. pop music is no less a team (nah, empire) effort. time to restrategize…

  26. 26 BeSerious July 5, 2007 at 2:15 pm

    Be serious.
No. The guy can’t speak English. So no.

  27. 27 maixee July 5, 2007 at 2:26 pm

Man…that really sucks for him…if he really wants to debut in America, he needs to work on his English…he should of never left JYP in the first place…what a dumb decision…

  28. 28 aly July 5, 2007 at 3:13 pm

    ok totally off subject but

    RAIN WAS IN INDIA
    WHY WHY WHY???
I WANTED TO GO THERE FOR BREAK TOO!!!
(by the way im indian so this has a greater impact on me)

    but back on subject
you guys do have a point
    leaving JYP
    NOT SMART
not learning english before he got here
    SUPER UBER DUMB!!!
other stars learn from past mistakes!
    dont repeat them!

  29. 29 Shila July 5, 2007 at 4:02 pm

Rain, get into an English immersion program quick!

  30. 30 mawee July 5, 2007 at 4:31 pm

as I have said in the other post about Rain, he should have tried at least to learn english first and it would not be this bad if he had not left JYP. Karma??? and dont think im an anti or something, duh.

  31. 31 Christie July 5, 2007 at 5:23 pm

Rain need JYP. JYP needs Rain.

  32. 32 omgwtfbbq July 5, 2007 at 6:09 pm

Wow Korean Air dropped out back in May? If Rain and Star M lost such a big sponsor like that there was no way the tour should have continued on since it sounds like they were probably losing money up to that point. Looks like they tried to press on and save face but ended up *losing* face big time. This mess will take awhile to recover from.

  33. 33 steppie July 5, 2007 at 6:15 pm

    Why does everyone blame Rain?

He has always been a hardworking, determined, and modest artist! This is a time for you Koreans to show some support. Don’t be so shallow… praising him when he was chosen for Times and then now bashing him and treating him like a disgrace to the country! I’m not Korean but I still feel for Rain. I think he has been a positive role model to many teenagers, including myself…
Some of you may think that I’m defending him because I’m a crazy fan. Well,I’m not! Can you find another artist who is equally as hardworking as Rain let alone more hardworking than he is? Is there another artist who is as persistent as he is? Is there another artist who goes by the motto: Endless effort, endless endurance, and endless modesty?

Honestly, can anyone give me one reason why he would want to destroy his own career? What can he benefit from cancelling the concerts? Some of you mentioned that his biggest mistake was leaving JYP and JYPE…Can you guarantee that he will be successful in the U.S. with his so called “mentor?” Where is JYP now when Rain needs him the most? Does he even feel sorry for Rain? Mind you… JYP and Rain parted peacefully. Rain treats JYP as his mentor, brother, friend even to this day. What does JYP take Rain for… probably nothing more than a money making machine. What is JYP doing right now? JYP is making headlines about making it big in the U.S. as a producer and how his newly established company is getting him the big bucks.

If you people think that Rain cancelled the concerts for money… then I think you should all use some common sense and L-O-G-I-C. Many people got their refunds the next day for crying out loud! Is money really that important to him? Afterall, Rain is probably more accustomed to being poor than most of us here. Maybe some of you forgot…before his debut, he had starved for seven consecutive days? Rain has worked so hard to get to where he is now. But for some very strange reason people hold him responsible for everything that has gone wrong. Is it because people cannot cope with their anger? What anger? Yes, it’s disappointing that concerts were cancelled… but who could possibly feel worse than Rain himself. If he hadn’t cared about the concert…beter yet if he never meant to perform in LA as some so called credible source reported, why did he fly to LA 2 weeks prior to the concert? Don’t just believe what you read or hear… think! Step out of the box and put yourself in his shoes! Even if the rest of the world doesn’t understand…Koreans should! Where is the Korean pride that you all care so much about? Nothing can be worse than having your own people putting you down and treating you like dirt. Afterall, what has he done wrong? Has Rain committed a crime? No!!!!! Don’t forget… Rain wanted to perform even without the equipment and the staging…. but he wasn’t allowed. Rain wanted to apologize to his fans face-to-face but he wasn’t allowed. If you think that posting a 4 minute long message on YouTube explaining how he feels and how sorry he is isn’t good enough for you… then I don’t know what is! If Rain didn’t care about you fans out there… why did he even bother recording the message?

Some of you might not even care about what I’ve written and that’s perfectly fine! I don’t care either if you’re an anti or a fan. I just hope that people don’t just jump on a bandwagon and start bashing someone without thinking about the situation. Always look at things from different perspectives. Unfortunately, it happend to Rain this time. Who knows… it might happen to another artist in the future. But look on the bright side, at least Rain now knows who his real friends and supporters are. Rain, treat this as a priceless learning experience. You will become wiser and stronger when this is all over! Don’t give up!

  34. 34 Narae July 5, 2007 at 9:03 pm

Oh well…hope he learned. He will do better next time.

  35. 35 monalisa July 5, 2007 at 9:41 pm

I think everything that’s needed to be said on this topic has been said. Time to let go and move on.

  36. 36 teabag July 5, 2007 at 9:45 pm

Blames..say it was StarM’s fault, V2B and all other coordinators but it all boils down to Bi! Who decided to not renew his contract with JYP? Who thought that he’s soooo popular that he can stand up on his own and leave his roots? IT WAS HIS DECISION! One thing I really dislike about Bi ever since he became crazy popular his head got bigger and bigger! Some might think that I’m a Bi hater, but no, I’m a fan who sees the other sides of Bi. A fan who does not pretend to see the realities and refuse or praise him as if he’s perfect! Although IMO it was him to blame, I’d still wait for his movies and whatsoever. He’s still young and given years and years to fix the problem. Fix himself and of course his management.

  37. 37 dkfgyriut July 5, 2007 at 10:42 pm

i didnt read all you wrote steppie, but i read a lttle, i can tell you write now, no one is bashing rain were just saying he should accpt responsibilty, and what rock have you been under rain was bashed more for the time magazine poll than he is for this

  38. 38 Toya T July 6, 2007 at 12:38 am

If Rain even has a chance in the US two things needs to occur: 1. Rain needs to learn english. 2. Rain needs JYP, or at least someone with extensive experience with the US entertainment industry.

  39. 39 shannen July 6, 2007 at 2:07 am

    omg… its really getting worst…
i hope he will be able to recover…
    rain, dont give up…
i know everything will be fine just dont lose hope…
    anyways hope ur okay!
    aja aja hwaiting…

  40. 40 Lira July 6, 2007 at 2:38 am

I am also not Korean and just feel for Rain. Atta Steppie! Couldn’t have said it better.

For all you guys, who wanted to see Rain answer for all this, since the US is the land of countless lawsuits. Maybe, you’ll just hear about all the law suits that will come out of this.

As for Rain, just keep your head up, this too shall come to pass and hopefully there’s a rainbow at the next turn.

  41. 41 tangy July 6, 2007 at 2:55 am

rain left jyp?? man i’m behind….i mean i knew their contract was ending but i didn’t know it happened already

i feel bad for rain….a lot of things have been going wrong for him lately…..you gain some you loose some
oh well he’s a fighter he’ll be ok

i’m just glad se7en english is getting a lot better….i guess you really have to know the language to succeed

  42. 42 tangy July 6, 2007 at 3:02 am

to luvly: “se7en wont make it as well… ”

se7en’s english is really good……he has people all around him that speak perfect english….teddy…taebin…jinu and sean
have you heard him sing english songs? one last cry maybe….he’s practicing and getting a better and better

  43. 43 ashley July 6, 2007 at 3:03 am

WTH! leaving jyp was NOT smart!

    he’s sad.. lol

  44. 44 kyff July 6, 2007 at 4:19 am

the language thing is important. I think it’s different in Asia than in the US. The US has one official language that everyone (well, practically :\) speaks. To get anywhere you’d be expected to speak it. There’s no reason to bother with people who don’t speak it because the home grown entertainment industry is so huge. (Yes, i know there’s a massive flaw in that argument. I’m not saying i agree with the point of view, i’m just stating it as a fact).
Asia doesn’t have the one common language. So, like, Japan has more tolerance for singers who’s Japanese isn’t perfect as long as they sound ok singing. Foreign fans listen to Kpop without understanding… It’s a different standard. I think that’s one of the main reasons “breaking America” is such a huge task for foreign, non-English speakers. It’s not so much a bias against where they’re from (as so many people like to say) as how they appear to be integrating/assimilating.

Rain needs to come back. Do his army service. Make a strong comeback (In Korea!) when he’s done. It’d get him back a helluva lot of the respect he’s lost.

  45. 45 tutyiu7i July 6, 2007 at 6:46 am

  49. 49 steppie July 7, 2007 at 8:43 am

I don’t want to have to reply everytime after someone makes a comment about what I’ve written. But dkfgyriut, when did I say that “Rain was bashed more for the time magazine poll than he is for this?” I said that he was PRAISED for being voted as Time’s 100 Most Influential People and then now bashed for the cancelled concerts. In fact, these are my exact words from the previous post: “Don’t be so shallow… praising him when he was chosen for Times and then now bashing him and treating him like a disgrace to the country!” Please read carefully before you comment on what others have written. Praised and bashed are antonyms.
That’s all I want to clarify. Everything that I wanted to say has been said already in the previous post. Saying anything more won’t help the situation anyway. Interpret it however you like. Time will prove everything…
