Are you world star material?

0707-jyp.jpg

According to producer JYP, in order to become a world star, you must be either (1) an American who can speak Chinese (2) Chinese who can speak English or (3) Korean who can speak both English and Chinese. So even if you have musical talent and dancing skills, you can’t get very far unless you have the language skills. JYP also bragged that he has seven trainees at JYP US and five of them can speak Korean, English and Chinese fluently.

If this is the case, then we know where Rain/Bi falls. Unless he perfects his English and Chinese, it’s goodbye world star status for the small-eyed ab flasher. So POPSEOUL! readers, are you world star material?

wuts with the American knowing Chinese??
    how bout Canadian??
    in that case…
    1. i can be a Canadian that can speak Chinese
    2. i’m also a Chinese who can speak English
    3. haha last but not least, i’m a korean who can speak chinese and english.

well well well, according to JYP, i can be a mighty world star =)

  3. 3 Lyna July 8, 2007 at 9:42 am

You don’t need to know other languages to become a world star if you’re an American, but if you’re Asian and you can speak English, it does go far.

Can’t wait to see some of these trainees that he’s talking about, haha :D

  4. 4 buttarain July 8, 2007 at 10:22 am

I like JYP but that def. isnt true. By the way is it me or does it seem that the people who write these articles always write a negative slant when saying anything about Rain it seems they do not like him.

  5. 5 Shila July 8, 2007 at 11:58 am

Was JYP slighted by Rain? Besides the expired contract, did they have a falling out? They seemed extremely tight at one time.

  6. 6 Christie July 8, 2007 at 12:00 pm

lmao I’m almost there. I’m Korean and I speak English, Spanish, and basic Japanese but that’s my limit.
Anyway, shouldn’t TALENT be included somewhere? xD

  7. 7 Pviolet July 8, 2007 at 3:50 pm

Basically what JYP means are if u were an artist and wanted to be very well known all over the world and makes more $$$,u have to widen your language knowledge!
It doesnt matter whether u are American who can speak chinese or not because as you can see most of the hollywood celebs cant speak any of chinese word but they really excel in their career.Number 2&3 makes sense if you are Asian star. Most of our celebs have that num 2 but not num 3!!

  8. 8 narutaru July 8, 2007 at 4:48 pm

I was told by an American friend that if anyone wants to make it in the states they have to speak American English and make everyone think that they are actually American. Otherwise they might as well forget it.

  9. 9 Lulu July 8, 2007 at 10:05 pm

    I agree you need to be flexible with what you speak to appeal to a wider audience, however… dearest JYP, shouldn’t talent have anything to do with anything?? XD;;

  10. 10 tangy July 9, 2007 at 9:17 am

    (2) Chinese who can speak English

yessss i’m gonna be a world star!

    lol just kinding

  11. 11 J July 9, 2007 at 9:46 am

Aly & Dez, I agree with ya’ll. I can speak a wee bit of korean, so does that mean I’ll be a wee bit of a world star? Lol.

  12. 12 kirstien July 9, 2007 at 12:03 pm

if those criteria really came from JYP, i dont think he has the RIGHT to give them and to brag anyway. If he’s bragging about his 7 trainees, where are they now? are they big in the BIG APPLE?! and what about rain, he didnt even fall into one of those criteria!! sorry rain, jyp thinks you’re not a world star material!!! hehehe…(so that maybe the reason why some of rain’s concerts were cancelled! jyp sabotage them, dont u think?!–> crazy conclusion!)

language is not only a factor to stardom, PROFESSIONALISM should be considered too…

  13. 13 its_trish July 9, 2007 at 12:06 pm

    I think the clincher is..
You also have to be HOT or too TALENTED to not be noticed..

  14. 14 mingzhu July 9, 2007 at 12:12 pm

Wahaha, I don’t think I could go very far with my face even if I can speak both English and Chinese..

    Visual appearance is important too.

That person has to have the face that can produce charisma, that “STAR FACE”.. He/she doesn’t have to be uber good-looking, I’ve seen dozens of beautiful stars and not all of them stand out.

And of course, talent is a given.. but I’ve seen stars with not so-impressive talent become big stars anyway. -_- So.. yeah..

  15. 15 Gna4 July 9, 2007 at 12:34 pm

    His comment is halarious…
because all the famous American singers are famous worldwide and they can only speak and understand English… and wouldn’t even dream of learning Chinese or Korean to say that.

  16. 16 Lira July 9, 2007 at 12:40 pm

I don’t agree with JYP entirely. Some are just not that extraordinarily talented but have the charisma to draw a lot of fans. Not to say that an artist can rely on charisma only to penetrate and sustain the market. But the “IT” factor has got to do with it. Sometimes, it is just written in the stars. Even if JYP speaks extremely good English, I doubt if he has the “IT” factor to make it in the US. HE just doesn’t have that extra something something to make it. I’m not a Rain fanatic. I’m just saying.

  17. 17 anecia July 9, 2007 at 1:45 pm

    I beg to differ.
For example,Coco lee speak english and chinese fluently, great singing and dancing skills…but i don’t see her being a WORLD STAR
Face it…its the “IT” factor which can suck money from obasans and lil girls and luck that counts…not some random” I know chinese and english and korean and japan and whatever language” so I’M A WORLD STAR!!!

  18. 18 Summer.x July 11, 2007 at 5:02 am

that is kinda true but i dont agree with it completely. unless ur really good u can do without knowing those languages. im chinese but i cant speak fluently i cant write or read coz i moved to england when i was 4 so i know english alot better. and rain is hot! he can so make it worldwide!

  19. 19 Joyce July 13, 2007 at 12:15 pm

I don’t agree with JYP because even if you know more than, say, 5 languages, you might not be able to sing, dance, act and have the pretty face and all like BoA, Hyori, Super Junior and such.

I am Chinese, know how to speak English and Cantonese fluently and currently learning Manderin and Korean
I can also somewhat speak French

I can sing and act but i dunno if i can dance
I want to be signed to a company before I am 20 so, good luck to me :D
And also good luck to the people that also wish to become someone famous

  20. 20 chinese dude July 13, 2007 at 6:44 pm

Let me break it to you! American media is racist — that’s why!!! Asian Americans are under-represented in American TV/movies and there are virtually non-existent in popular music because American media is racist. Remember Harlem Lee who won the singing contest on NBC, but was not given contract because he’s Asian!

At least most of you acknowledged that while American singers/actors don’t have to know a lick of Chinese/Korean/Japanese/etc. to be famous in Asia and yet Asian singers/actors are unknown in America — even those who speak fluent English.

Ever wonder why there are lots of Asian Americans who speak fluent English, but know very LITTLE of their Asian language, go back to Asia to start a singing/acting career??? Daniel Henney can’t speak Korean! Daniel Wu isn’t (wasn’t) fluent in Cantonese! LeeHom wasn’t fluent in Taiwanese!

If you are Asian or Asian American, you can forget about becoming a world star and making it in America or Europe. And no, I wouldn’t say Chow Yun Fat, Jet Li, Jacky Chan, Gong Li, Zhang Zhiyi are world stars! CYF plays mostly the sneaky Asian villain roles and when he had a leading role, the movies bombed (Anna and the King, The Replacement Killers)! Jet Li and Jacky Chan are asexual kungfu stereotypical caricatures to white people and are mocked for their accent.

Then, you have the Asian actresses who are just convenient whores in American movies. They all happen to despise Asian males and have WHITE boyfriends/husbands that are at least a dozen years older than them! Coco Lee is also married a a lot older white guy. Two of the more popular Asian authors are females,Amy Tan and Iris Chang, who are married to a white guy (can you name a popular Asian American male author?).

So yea, if you are an Asian/Asian American female and want to make it in American, get yourself a White man and start hating on Asian males. But then, even if you sell out you won’t make it big!

  21. 21 Mary3lucky July 14, 2007 at 2:20 am

I don’t wanna buy anything from that criteria’s JYP looking,to become a world star. What about meeh,I can speak English well, korean’s basic language, chinese trying hard to learn and Tagalog were really good. But still,no one wants to take me to become a world’s star LoL.The only thing Jyp’s are right,it should have at least knows English language,’coz having this in ur pocket,u can easily communicate to any races you might encounter in any day.
If that was his critea,he should teach Rain for the first place. So that, the poor guy Rain weren’t in that mess right now..You both Koreans, both pride of ur country Korea should help each other..but instead,Rain left alone broken hearted and cleaning his mess alone..
You should say that criterias beforehand, not aftermath of Rain’s mess in his career..
I should say I don’t care about you Guys ,but you must play according to the rules of the game.Play fairly…
Aiming to be a good one in a hollywood world,is not that kind of easy…you must be willing to breaks all ur bones u have in ur body..What i mean is, you have to work really hard and not only that…you can’t make it sure that u really can get in ,to their world of showbizzzzzzz..
I felt sorry for you Rain but If I were you, focus on their critea..English language…You have the looks that womens wants and gays as well hehhehe.,ur good in dancing, acting and singing..You have all the criterias that the audience might love, only thing is the language barrier..
Now,if you really insisting to be in the world of madness, este…American showbiz..try harder to learn their language..who knows one of this days,ur same feather…Nothing is Impossible, have faith in yourself that u can do it…Aza,Aza….Saranghe ae gayo…

  22. 22 MegaStar Only in Asia July 14, 2007 at 5:46 pm

Let’s just face the facts. Rain will only be an international superstar amongst the Asian Countries, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Rain has nothing to compete with amongst other international singers/actors. He has very little real talent besides his dancing abilities. The Majority of Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, and even American-Born Asians do not even care for RAIN.

Be honest with yourselves, the majority of US concert tickets were purchased by Asians, and will only be purchased by Asians.

I applaud his efforts, and how his people generated a lot of HYPE and BUZZ about his international tour, but realistically he will never make it BIG in the US or in any European Country. Of course he may have his cameos or bit parts in Films, but that will all fade.

Rain, I suggest you concentrate on conquering and maintaining your presence in Asia. Don’t spread yourself out too thin and too soon. Learn from the damage you created for yourself by cancelling your US Tour.
What’s wrong with being the King of Pop of Asia. China has 1.3 billion people that is over 20% of the World Population. Put your ego aside, don’t embarass yourself in the States.

  23. 23 Miko July 15, 2007 at 4:53 am

    hahaha….im very close…im taking chinese in skool n i can speak eng. n krn!!!!hahahahha

  24. 24 fobbiyo July 25, 2007 at 3:49 pm

I think America is really ignorant with not letting Asians into the Us music industry. Always streotyping or whatnot. And I live in America too. America music is not even real MUSIC. its a bunch of stupid words that get put together and into a “song” Some of the songs don’t even freaking make sense. Who the hell sings about dance moves?! Or lollipops or stupid things like that. Sadly Theres only some talented people here. How do does untalented people top charts?! Maybe sex really does sell. sad..
I really hope more ASIANS make it world wide. Even without knowing English. uggggggh

  25. 25 xangxi July 26, 2007 at 8:53 am

America is not ignorant. There are talented people in every country in the world, but it doesn’t mean they can or have a right to make it in any market (the US Market, Korean Market, Italian Market, etc.) they choose. It’s all about what sells in that particular country.

On a smaller level you can ask yourself, “Why don’t talented people in Korea make it in Korea?” Or rather why do a lot of untalented people in Korea make it in Korea? The Reality is that sex does sale, look at all of the sultry sexy Korean Plastic girl singers and actresses.

and about Rain, He’s the same, he sells more sex than talent.

  26. 26 gina July 28, 2007 at 12:45 am

To be honest, Rain cannot be considered very handsome…
Like many of you have said already, it’s very difficult for Asian actors/singers to get success in the States. It’s even more difficult for Korean celebs because most of them can’t speak English. The chance of Rain to make it in the US is very little. Maybe movie stars have higher chance than singers.

  27. 27 mina July 29, 2007 at 9:00 am

You can’t plan world wide success. It’s too grand-scale for any single human being to handle. There’s too many factors to fulfill.

    Talent.
    Facial features.
    Opportunity.
    Luck.
    Comminucation.
    Time.
    Practice.
    Making new contacts.
    Maintaining contacts.

    And the list goes on.

My point is, just enjoy what you do. People have to stop pressuring themselves and let go that they may not become that top world star. Simply put, being a world star really doesn’t mean a whole lot. Look at Britney Spears. She is what many of us consider to be a world star. Is she happy? I think we know the answer. No. Not really. Look at Christina Aguilera. She’s acutally enjoys what she does because music is truly her passion. She didn’t plan to learn a thousand langauges. She wasn’t fulfilling some company standard or langauge requirement. She was using her time to MAKE MUSIC. That’s the base of being a singer. The base of being a singer is not learning Chinese or Korean or English. Music is NOT about language. Music is music.

To become a world star SINGER, you need to know MUSIC.

  28. 28 XiaoXi August 6, 2007 at 3:16 am

JYP, and his whole “star machine” is just creepy. Village Voice did an article on the new US space for his freak show and it sounded like a cult.

JYP may be able to create the next Menuedo or some other flash-in-the-pan act, but the next US superstar? I don’t think he gets the US market if he thinks his way is how you go about it.

Of course, when his manufactured acts don’t hit big, Americans will be blamed for being racists.

  29. 29 Aya September 2, 2007 at 11:23 pm

Werent the backstreet boys world stars? And they speak only english, oh well I think Howie D and AJ spoke some espanol, but if espanol was on the list Id be in.. I speak Japanese english and Spanish lol Its worldly.

  30. 30 wahhda September 26, 2007 at 2:48 pm

This is crazy. Loads of stars CANNOT speak chinese and korean and they are known world-wide.

I’m Chinese and i speak english and a bit of nt-so fluent korean, does that make me a world star? dots….

  31. 31 kimmie October 24, 2007 at 10:22 pm

what?! well i’m chinese, but i look korean
i speak english, chinese & some korean
i lived in the US & japan
i dance so that makes me a world star?

the point is that all these qualities are secondary. more importantly you need a love for music to become a star to push you through the hard times. you have to work HARD…cant rely on talent alone. only when you get all these nailed down ,then its nice if you could speak other languages

  32. 32 UEUI October 25, 2007 at 8:48 am

    im korean

  35. 35 zenn December 6, 2007 at 4:45 pm

Well, let’s see… I write and speak fluent English and Spanish and Tagalog (Filipino) and currently learning Korean; and is living in California just 2 hours away from Hollywood. Why am I still NOT famous?? Those are 3 languages under my belt and soon to be 4!! JPY or whatever his name is, has a brain as dead as a poisoned rat…. Is it like…. “Roses are red, violets are blue, if you speak 3 languages then you’d end up like Gwen Stephani-yo”??? LOL!!!…. I’m just having so much fun!!! Thanks POPSEOUL!!!

  36. 36 dr December 7, 2007 at 1:56 am

  38. 38 DAPHNE December 21, 2007 at 12:32 pm

im hispanic and i can dance and sing.

    learning japanese

    speak decent korean and french

    understand spanish

    but no chinese

    DAMN

  39. 39 Cecelia February 17, 2008 at 9:35 pm

Dang. That man is crazy. Speaking different languages comes in handy at times but you can’t revolve your whole career around it. This is hypothetically INCORRECT!! Yeah if you want to go to the Chinese or Korean music industries damn it you need to learn those languages. And learn English as well if you’re planning to enter any English dominating country music entertainment industries. I just think big entertainment companies like JYP needs to stop ruining people’s dreams to be BIG. You can be World Star material with knowing only English. No offense. Why do entertainment industries like to brag so much? And in America if you’re Asian you need to be like a porn star or hot or slutty looking to get people’s attention. The U.S. is so into sex appeal which is just stupid. Looks are not important. Skills and motivation is. People just needs to stop being so critically ignorant.

  40. 40 raynii April 25, 2008 at 4:38 am

  42. 42 CK November 27, 2008 at 5:44 pm
