Looking for a new hairstyle? Try the ajumma pama

pamaaju.jpg

Ajummas are everywhere. You can spot them by their squat bodies, aggressive attitude and permed head of hair (the “pama”). Most fashionable 20-30 somethings would not be caught dead in such a hairstyle, but with the 80’s look coming back in style, we are beginning to see the ajumma force spread to the masses. Celebs are bringing out the ajumma in them (because we all have it) by curling their locks. Kim Hee-ae’s character as glamourous and bitchy mistress in My man’s Woman had a full head of permed hair. And Bada uses the ajumma force in an attempt to revamp her career with horrid 80’s fashions. Shin Eun-kyung also channels the ajumma in her to play the strong, single career woman who seduces a man in order to have a baby in the SBS drama Bad Couple. However, the ajumma pama also crosses gender lines. The gagmen also adopt this hairdo because they want that extra laugh - even if it’s only for their hair.

This is an honest and not-supposed-to-be-mean question:

Are all “gag men” in Korea fat?
Or can fat men only be “gag men” and not serious celebrities?

  4. 4 jen July 12, 2007 at 3:30 pm

this is by far the ugliest trend to hit korea
    since the unfortunate world-wide leggings
    debacle.

and jake, i’m glad you’re asking honest questions.
although i hope you know honest questions can also
    be stupid questions.
    1. no.
    2. no.

    I’m not a fan

Please take this with a grain of salt… just my impressions after several years of living in Korea.

My take on it is that Korean humor isn’t sophisticated enough to allow some average looking guy to stand on the stage and do clever, wry observational humor. Gagmen must act like buffoons, dress like women, fall down a lot, and most importantly, look funny. That’s why the perm is a haircut of of choice for these guys…

  8. 8 Pviolet July 12, 2007 at 7:35 pm

    Awww,pama aka afro are back!
Love the afro style but it doesnt suit me!

  9. 9 Se7enFan July 12, 2007 at 8:27 pm

Please don’t insult my people by calling this hairstyle a Afro…lol. They would get stared at like this 0_0. And trust me either anger or insults will follow. I’ve only seen a few Korean celebs pull it off convincingly and nicely…seem Japanese are more sincere in their efforts and therefore have better outcomes…lol. Also notice seems like Asians are the only people that like afros like that…

anyway chae rim also pulled out an ahjumma hairstyle in her recent drama.. LOL! the ahjumma hairstyle craze,, at first when celebs sports it for a drama its annoying to look at but it grows on U, LOL!

  13. 13 jane =] July 13, 2007 at 12:37 am

i agree, only SOME people can pull it off.

  14. 14 jicks July 13, 2007 at 10:28 am

Lee Na Young would look good even if she was bald.
I agree w/ jane =] -Some can pull it off, some should steer right clear (I probably fall in the latter group LOL)

brian, you said, “…Korean humor isn’t sophisticated enough to allow some average guy to stand on stage…”. You seem to be saying - gag show producers have no choice but to put “baffoons” on stage, because the Korean audiences have a crude sense of humor and they are unable to appreciate sophisticated comedy. If I interpreted your remarks correctly, then I find them insulting. If a Korean version of Jerry Seinfeld performed a stand-up routine on stage, do you think we would just cluelessly stare at him? Since we cannot grasp his “clever, wry observational humor”. Give me a break! There are many forms of comedy, slap-stick is whats popular in Asia right now. It is not an indication of an unsophisticated society….. the sense of superiority and arrogance from a westerner rears its ugly head again.

  18. 18 arrogant christianpete July 15, 2007 at 2:34 am

Here you go again Christian Pete. It is your own self-indulgent sense of superiority and arrogance that you think you can attack and belittle other people’s comments on popseoul.

You seem to enjoy to misinterpret people’s comments so you can castrate them with your obsessed self-narcissistic view of yourself as being but not even close to some type or form of an intellect.

Brian started off his comments with “Please take this with a grain of salt…” Well you didn’t. Get a life and stop bullying people on popseoul.

  19. 19 christianpete July 15, 2007 at 6:08 pm

you again!! flash21, confuzed, pinay, etc. the lunatic with a thousand usernames. :-p Didn’t I tell you last time to seek professional therapy for your multiple personality disorder? you still refuse to heed my advice.

The exchange between myself and brian I won’t discuss with you. Since it appears you have misinterpreted both of our positions. You tell your other personalities I said this.

Oh, btw, Hyori is smokin’ hot and sexy as always. And with one look you’re able to turn Madusa to stone. LOL!!

  20. 20 christianpete July 15, 2007 at 6:22 pm

another thing, I haven’t bullied anyone on the popseoul site. Unlike you who actively seeks out other users to attack and bully.

  21. 21 PatheticLittleChristianPete July 15, 2007 at 8:06 pm

I hate to disappoint you, but I have never used the other names as you suggest. So I guess there are a lot of other people that dislike you and/or your comments. That’s funny.

By the way, you never had an exchange with Brian. He never replied to you. You just made bullying comments to his early statements. Actually, it’s you and I who’ve been having an exchange. Its been very tiring because I always have to correct your misinterpretations.

Let me give you an example of how you like bully people on popseoul. Just look at how you talk to me with your insulting words from your limited vocabulary.
    1. Lunatic
    2. Seek Professional Therapy
    3. Multiple Personlity Disorder
    4. Madusa

ChristianPete please review Ephesians 5:4 which states “Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking which are out of place.” If you’re going to use the name ChristianPete, then you better walk the walk, and talk the talk.

FYI - I don’t seek out other users, just you b/c of your bullying comments. Just think of me as your conscious. Your Spritual Conscious.

In re: to Hyori. You better take a cold shower, if you haven’t relieved yourself already. Don’t forget to repent tomorrow at Church Christian-Still-of-the-Flesh-Pete.

  22. 22 christianpete July 15, 2007 at 11:24 pm

um, you “never” used other nicknames? You just invented another username!! The hypocrisy and ignorance is remarkable. A perfect example of your multiple username tactic is found in the post titled - “Is Hyori really volunteering in Ethiopia”. Dated : 6/14/07. There you invented two nicknames “confuzed..” and “joan”. I had a good laugh when you responded to yourself with,” i agree with joan”. Its more evidence of mental instability…. Besides, your not fooling anyone at popseoul.com, they record the computer IP address and location of all posters. So regardless of what nickname one goes under, they’re aware of anyone who uses multiple usernames.

brian posted his comments on a public medium for anyone to read, and I responded to his opinion with a comment of my own. Technically, its a simple form of communication, and can be called an exchange…. Now I’ll list a few of your recent insulting labels ( too numerous to mention them all ) -
    1) pathetic little…
    2) self-indulgent
    3) self narcisstic ( whatever that means?)
    4) confuzed
    5) limited vocabulary.
You even gone as far as to make up mocking usernames that resemble my usernick. Thats pathetically childish!

I suggest you seek a psychiatrist for your mental illness. Also, take the advice from the bible scripture and cease with your foolish talk.

  23. 23 popseoul July 16, 2007 at 12:19 am

    Guys,

Please stop the name calling. It’s totally unnecessary to insult each other on this site. If you want to voice your opinion about the post, that’s fine, but if you have to go out of your way to make fun of the other commenters on the site, that’s unacceptable.

From now on, we are going to delete all antagonistic comments made to other commenters. Please help us keep this blog clean and enjoyable to all!

    -popseoul team
