Battle of the “Big Groups”

0713-big-groups.jpg
Surprise! Super Girls isn’t the only “big group” debuting this summer. Apparently, JYP produced a boy “big group” and they will debut in August. Similar to Super Girls, nobody knows how many members this “big group” will have or the name of the group, but many predict that it won’t be over thirteen. Honestly, I don’t care how many members these “big groups” will have, because it’s going to be big either way. Once you are pass six members, it doesn’t matter if you have eight or thirteen because it’s going to be too big period.

According to culture analysts and industry insiders, these “big groups” are in demand because the show biz needs entertainers, not talents, who have a large fan base and can fill in every odd jobs in the industry, such as MC, DJ, acting gigs here and there. So I guess it was more of a strategic move for producers such as SM and JYP to produce these “big groups” but I’m still skeptical of their success. SuJu and I-13 debuted around the same time two years ago and if the past can teach us anything, one of these “big groups” will fail, so which one do you think will fail? The Super Girls or JYP’s boys? Or both?

Super Girls updates:
Two more girls were added. Member # 5 is Soo Young, the sexy and innocent one and member #6 is Seo Hyun.

0713-soo-young-innocent-and-sexy.jpg0713-seo-hyun.jpg

I-13 updates:
The group is being re-vamped with less members. They got rid of all the young-ins or the elementary kids and kept only two or three members from the original group and added two or three new members. And of course, they are going to change the name since it won’t be 13 anymore.

‘Once you are pass six members, it doesn’t matter if you have eight or thirteen because it’s going to be too big period.’

If they have more than zero members they are too big.

  2. 2 lazybum July 13, 2007 at 2:32 pm

hmm, that makes sense, actually, i mean SuJu does like EVERYTHING in the entertainment industry, they DJ, they act, they sing… and they all have followings, so they’re gurranteed a certain amount of audience. i guess that’s smart. i’m not sure how many of these “big group” the industry can handle tho… there can only be so many positinos to fill…

but yeah, anything over 6 is too much…

  3. 3 mrod July 13, 2007 at 2:43 pm

The fat dude in the top right is already my favorite.

  4. 4 cosmicolor July 13, 2007 at 3:08 pm

I can’t handle all these many membered pop groups. :( It took me a while to even memorize all of Super Junior!

  5. 5 Piko July 13, 2007 at 3:14 pm

    I-13? Huh?
Never heard of them, they look tooo young to sing and should go back to school, this is no time to be hot and sexy in the entertainment industry when your at that kind of age. These younger girls should have a normal childhood.
Well, i bet they are still living the normal life since no one has really heard of them.

I like suju and i think they will be the one and only successful big groups. A big group of guys are eyecandy.
A big group of girls is just scary however i think these big group concept should end soon. There’s nothing new anymore.

  6. 6 *~*cheonsa*~* July 13, 2007 at 3:43 pm

hmm i dunno how successful the two groups will be…. the market in korea seems over saturated with boybands atm it will take a lot to make another as successful as dbsk and super junior. as for the super girls i’d like to see a big girl group do well…. but in korea they don’t have the same dedicated male fanbase as japan…although thats another completely scary matter.

i think most of the stuff with jessica is rumours, the boys are really close they wouldn’t date a girl who had already been with another of the boys esp if she hurt them. But anti’s will believe anything and the way anti’s and just fans in general are in korea that doesn’t bode well for the super girls

  7. 7 Christie July 13, 2007 at 3:44 pm

lmfao When is SM going to “reveal” the infamous Jessica Jung who has been rumored to be in “scandals” with the Dong Bang and SuJu boys? lol

In my opinion, Super Junior was only successful because almost everything SM touches turns to gold aka crazy middle school fangirls who buy everything that has the words “super” and “junior” on them.

  8. 8 *~*cheonsa*~* July 13, 2007 at 3:55 pm

not everything sm touches turns to gold…. look at the artists who only turn out for smtown albums now if they’re lucky.. like black beat or isak and jiyeon before jiyeon joined cheon sang ji hee

  9. 9 Yabi July 13, 2007 at 3:57 pm

Probably both of the group will succeed. Look at Super Girls. They are well known before they debuted.

The guys are made of good looking dude. And they are of different nationalities. Might be one of the top Hallyu star in the future.

Anyhow anyway both will succeed in their own way

About the disappearing comments please don’t use the opposite of this symbol “>” because anything after that won’t appear =)

  11. 11 sujuforever July 13, 2007 at 5:10 pm

Suju was the first, the best there is, and the best there will be..
Anything else is going to be pretty copy-cat material and i doubt they will succeed…n being honest, i hope they dont :P

  12. 12 lennie July 13, 2007 at 7:07 pm

@Christie: HAHA i was wondering the same thing… and i just checked the smtown website, and there she is! number 8! i had a feeling they were saving her for last… and i seriously hope she is the last one. i mean more than 8 girls in one group… no thanks. even 8 is a bit much, yeah?

  13. 13 Michelle July 13, 2007 at 9:32 pm

    WHAT? DON’T TAKE DONGHAE. TT~

Just leave Super Junior. Every group that has 8+ members is just going to seem like a copy. Though… JYP’s group will most likely be talent over looks. The crazy ELF fans are most likely planning some evil tactics for that group’s downfall. DOWN WITH THE PEOPLE. >_>

As for Super Girls, I honestly thought Lee Soo Man was smarter than that. After all, fans and antifans make up the money’s worth. The members of Super Girls are already bashed before their debut. SUJU was too, so I guess we’ll see…

    SUPER JUNIOR HWAITING!~

  14. 14 ashley July 13, 2007 at 9:32 pm

    oh my..
i think Super Girls not interesting..
they we’re copying our Super Junior guys that we’re talented..
even though Super Junior’s the first one..
they we’re much interesting than these..

  15. 15 xiiaoduriian July 14, 2007 at 2:04 am

    they don’t look very pretty.
    are they? hmm..

  16. 16 shinjinny July 14, 2007 at 2:39 am

I just want to tell all of these girls to stop looking the same and to go study!

  17. 17 darby July 14, 2007 at 2:56 am

Does anyone have links (in english) with info about SM and these other music companies in Korea? I am just wondering about how these companies work and how do they get artists signed. It sounds like young artists have to sign their lives away pretty much, kind of similar to 19 Entertainment with the American Idol contestants?

  18. 18 anna July 14, 2007 at 4:00 am

as for the rumors about jessica and like every male artist from SM i’m sure most of it is untrue. seriously suju and dbsk are friends and i highly doubt they’d be into sharing girls. i’m sure she did date like two of them but i doubt she dated all of them. poor girl… i think her biggest mistake was that she liked taking pics with those boys and posting it up for all the netizens to see.

  19. 19 anna July 14, 2007 at 4:05 am

the final (or at least its supposed to be final unless SM has something up their sleeve) member is Jessica Jung! love her or hate her she’s in the group.

  20. 20 Seoul Queen July 14, 2007 at 4:59 am

Hmm i wonder why they put Jessica last? Maybe because she has soo many fans who hate her and they didn’t want people to turn their attention away from this new group.. whatever the reason, i honestly don’t think this band will work (A) as i said before girl fans are more crazier than guy fans..(B) as someone else added, girl bands are never as popular as boy bands….

Yes, i read it too, that jessica slapped DongHae across the face, just because he was debuting before her. Jealousy can be very dangerous!!! haha

  21. 21 mingzhu July 14, 2007 at 9:15 am

Not to sound skeptic.. well, Super Junior sounds waaaaaaay better than Super Boys.. lol. So I don’t want to comment on the name, “Super Girls.” ahem..

And I agree, boy bands are more popular then girl bands because of the fanbase. I hope SM knows what they’re doing if they want to house two “big” groups.

And I never heard of I-13 before.. o__O

  22. 22 Brian July 14, 2007 at 10:59 am

And seriously… if I were a father I wouldn’t let me daughter anywhere near the Korean entertainment industry. I’ve heard far too many rumors about the dark side of the industry to feel comfortable with my daughter involved.

  23. 23 b0mii July 14, 2007 at 2:41 pm

    walao, stupid comments..
    suju is successful lorh..
    they all can sing!!
    some can act!!
    some can DJ!!
    some can host!!
    some can whatever la..
    & they do not suck!!
    & they have the looks..
though some like kangin (no offence) not that handsome or whatever, but because of who he is, he`s personality & voice, we(fans), idolize him..
some fans tend to idolize people cause of looks, but not all, some idolize on their voice & so on!!
(ur the one who suck, who can`t even sing nor act nor DJing, nor host, maybe don`t even have the looks nor whatever la!!)
idiotics don`t bash suju la!! go & die lah.. diam diam la!

JYP may copy but of course companies tend to copy so can`t blame the artist..
JYP may be successful but may not, so we have no right to bash on these artist..

super girl might be successful, may not just like JYP band, so we totally have no right to bash on them until we see their true colous..

if they (JYP band & supergirls) have no talents, then maybe we can bash them, because some company might hire them base on their looks rather than talent..

i feel that i want only suju to be the “big group”.. cause i frankly feel (about JYP & super girls) like “WTH copycats want to be like suju” eventhough super girls & suju are in the same company..

  24. 24 *~*cheonsa*~* July 14, 2007 at 5:02 pm

“super girls” is a fanmade name.. when there were rumours flying around that sm would be making a female group with many members (and compared to suju super girls are small) the fans dubbed them the super girls there isn’t an official name for the group yet

and they look good, dancing-wise, from the 13sec clip on youtube

  25. 25 jane July 14, 2007 at 5:49 pm

    gah…big groups.
super junior was enough for me >.< too big. too big.
i-13 .. crazy big as well.

jyp is planning to create a group pretty much just as big as super junior but with more diversity having guys from china, japan, korea .. pretty much many asians.

read it on a forum, but i dont remember which one =/

ah..super girls…thank god there’s only 4 of them. hm. they’re cute. think i saw a dance practice of them. they’re pretty good.

  26. 26 *~*cheonsa*~* July 14, 2007 at 9:27 pm

    8 not 4

  27. 27 sara July 15, 2007 at 1:39 am

my my my…so many new people….damn…i didnt know i-13 had a 13 girl group..haaha…suju is the best…jyp is always coming up with something new to become more world wide known..i dont think the sm 13 girl group will succeed so much cause mainly girl bands dont get famous …jyp’s new band might get popular but there’s already a famous 13 member group, suju,….they cant replace them….LOL

  28. 28 anna July 15, 2007 at 2:55 am

they just unveiled a 9th member, a really pretty girl named sunny. so the total keeps moving up from the original 12 or 13 down to 4 to 6 to 7 to 8 and now to 9. i think SM has plotted to have about 12 or 13 all along. so lets see if the count goes higher.

  29. 29 suzana1 July 15, 2007 at 9:58 pm

    nooooooooooooo!
no way! these groups are nothing but copies of our beloved SuJu!! i can’t bear it! too many big groups popping upp!!! i say they’ll all fail!!!

  30. 30 Yuri July 16, 2007 at 12:32 am

Did anyone else say “Oh my god…no.” when they unveiled the 9th member? I wasn’t even expecting MYSELF to have such a reaction lol. They are reaching for 13 aren’t they?

  31. 31 jaenie July 16, 2007 at 2:01 am

i think super girls are going to fail. hahaha. cause honestly. there are more girl fans than there are guy fans. guys will probably like them just because they look pretty but not go crazy over their talents or anything…cause they might not really have any talents. girls…they go crazy as long as the guys have the good looks and knows how to present himself to being a nice, funny, wonderful guy. hahahaha.

  32. 32 anecia July 16, 2007 at 8:22 pm

I agree with what Beserious said
    No looks,no debute
Thats how entertainment industry works man~
Face it,if your fav “talented” band have the talents but not the looks…lets say ur fav band has a voice of angels BUT!!the looks of william hung, noobits. You wouldn’t even look at them!!
And seriously…i’m getting tired of big bands…i can’t even remember the 13 member’s names in SUJU!!!

  33. 33 fobbiyo July 18, 2007 at 3:04 pm

Yeah. I really don’t get the whole big group thing. I was shocked when I saw that Suju had 13 members. Later I got use to it and learning their name was a pain in the ass. Haha. I think SOME of Suju members can sing, not all. But everyone in Suju does something because .. isn’t that what they are created to do? Isn’t Suju created to target many entertainment places? Who knows if “Super Girls” will be popular. They have 4 less people than Suju. I really hope that they can sing and do more LIVE performances than Suju -_- And 13 members… is SO overrated. I think they should stay with 2-6 members.

  34. 34 meme July 18, 2007 at 9:20 pm

Thank God they want to change the name

    I Hate them

  35. 35 Stasha July 23, 2007 at 3:10 pm

personally no i think super girls are not going to be popular at all. Sm should just quit now whie they can! Suju is awesome and i think no big groups can surpass them. And one thing that i think Super hirls wont work is well that jessica girl!! ooo i hate her!!! she is such a slut!! but anyway yeah i don’t think they will be big.

  36. 36 SJ forever July 31, 2007 at 6:18 am

Sorry super girls for me is Super junior forever not even the same gender can change my mind about the best group.

  37. 37 SJ forever July 31, 2007 at 7:25 am

Super junior forever! I’m starting to hate I-13 cause they’re copying our super junior. As for super girls they’ll never be as popular as Super junior. If super girls try to out beat super junior then that’s crazy. So everyone is on Super junior side right? If they r then that’s great.

  38. 38 suju lover August 12, 2007 at 1:39 am

sj lover i agree with you again
    lol
super girls arent gonig to make it that far^^
and why are they trying to copy super junior by having alot of members?
its gonig to be hard for them unlike suju they can basically do anything and everything ok
i doubt that super girls can sing or dance
there problaby going to be like i-13
    there not famouse anymore
they only made like 1 albuma and was never seen again
    ㅋㅋㅋㅋ
well i think no ones going to be like suju and become that famous^^

  39. 39 DJKim aka The Truth August 13, 2007 at 6:45 am

Supergroups are (excuse my analogy) like throwing shit to the fan to see what sticks.

Supergroups are just a marketing tool and a training ground to find which individual from the group will be the next solo star. It is a test to see with person will stand out from the group and who the public will like best.

Later this person will be groomed individually to become the next solo star.

JYP and other companies are smart these young girls and boys are an investment under long contracts. It only take 1 out of group to be the next star for JYP and other companies to cash in. The unfortunate one’s that do not show any promise will disappear and be kicked to the streets.

Unfortunate, but true. Goodluck supergroups. For the unlucky ones, “Don’t let the door hit you too hard on your way out.”

i have never heard of I-13 before?! 0.o

  42. 42 VixXxen415 September 29, 2007 at 1:05 pm

Super Junior was everywhere basically lol
So there was no way of getting around them like James said you can’t help but to get pulled in. Also the guys of SuJu are so funny and their shows were good and fun to watch too. Super Girls might make it but I’m not so sure about that. They better do what SuJu did and be everywhere!

I’m just mad that some of the little girls in the I-13 pic had on shirts that show their tummy…

    I love Super Junior!

  43. 43 SuperJunior Cute, Mornng musume Ugly April 23, 2008 at 2:00 pm

I-13 Failed badly while Super Junior gained popular like hell

  44. 44 Grace August 19, 2008 at 4:24 am

ok suju is from sm entertainment…and i don’t know what company I-13 came from but just know that suju is from sm..

  45. 45 SuperJunior4Ever September 23, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Funny How After Super Junior’s successful debut…they make more “big” groups. I agree “Koko” to much want-to-be Super Junior. 1st it was I-13, then SNSD, then Hot blood. 1st of all Super Junior the 1st biggest Band in Korea, created originally by LSM. SNSD were supposed to be 13, glad they didn’t cuz if they are 13 and (from their hairstyle today trying to copy SJ). Glad snsd didn’t stick w/Super Girls” o else it makes it obvious that they are coying SJ
