Can Jang Hyuk go from Hallyu to Hollywood star?

0715-jang-hyuk.jpg
Thank You hero Jang Hyuk will start filming his first Hollywood movie Dance of the Dragon. The movie is about an aspiring ballroom dancer who moves to Singapore to achieve his dreams. His love interest is Fann Wong and 90% of the movie will be in English! Wow, I didn’t know that Jang Hyuk crammed English and worked those muscles during his military services. Good for him. The press conference will be held on July 30th and the movie is set to be released early next year.

  4. 4 Rayestar July 25, 2007 at 7:37 am

It sounds good but why now everybody wants to run and become famous in America? Looks like an asian invasion about to happen. That sounds cool.

  5. 5 Rainy_x_DaySs July 25, 2007 at 7:44 am

  9. 9 OMG! July 25, 2007 at 9:59 am

lee byunghun is already filming with josh hartnett. as what you ask? a korean gangster of course. asians just can’t get a break. you’ll never see bae youngjun with say sandra bullock in some chick flick because asian men are not seen as leading men. i wouldn’t get my hopes up too much.

  10. 10 yznw July 25, 2007 at 10:33 am

hollywood movie? but i wonder the shoot will be in singapore? cuz the article said “The movie is about an aspiring ballroom dancer who moves to Singapore to achieve his dreams.”..huh.. Fann Wong and Jang Hyuk..can’t wait to watch this movie

  11. 11 mrod July 25, 2007 at 10:43 am

Why does any “Hollywood” movie starring someone Asian it seems as though they stick “Dragon” or some other Oriental variation in the title? I heard the sequel of Harold and Kumar is going to be called Dragon and Kumar Go to the Opium Den.

    Anyway, hope it does well.

  12. 12 dwilliams July 25, 2007 at 10:47 am

    To OMG
I couldnt agree with you more but then it is left up to Asians to try and promote more sensual, sexual movies not preverted mind you but more sensual movies besides the ones that come out of Asia which sometimes are gangsta or martial arts movies. My favorite movies are Flower Drum Song, Perhaps Love, The Lover, Fearless and The Last Empereror. Tha Last Empereror is by far the best Ive seen in a long time. Nonethless lets dont wait for HWOOD to define what Asian Sexuality and Sensuality is let the Asian community do that.

This might be a dumb question, but how did this guy get into a movie with Fann Wong? She’s a top Singaporean actress. I’ve never heard of this guy.

  17. 17 BeSerious July 25, 2007 at 12:22 pm

This might be a dumb question, but how did this chick get into a movie with Jang Hyuk? He’s a top Korean actor. I’ve never heard of this chick.

    He’s pretty hot XD
I hope he makes it so I can see more of him~~~

  22. 22 DaeBoRa July 25, 2007 at 1:42 pm

He was in ‘Please teach me english’ (Yeongeo wanjeonjeonbok)with Lee Na Yeong. His “Yu ar so byutipul” was so unforgettable … I always say that to tease my korean friends ^_° …

  23. 23 Jen July 25, 2007 at 1:55 pm

I don’t like sharing my fav. actors with the rest of the world :-(

  24. 24 ed July 25, 2007 at 2:06 pm

he’s incredibly funny in Please Teach Me English…oh Elvis!! he shouldn’t use the same accent in this though hehe.
casting is about capturing market: jason scott lee for america (not that he’s big here), fann for singapore, jang hyuk for korea/japan.
recently francis ng of hong kong did One Last Dance with singapore, thai talents, and harvey keitel!!

  25. 25 monalisa July 25, 2007 at 5:05 pm

Ya, loved him in “Please Teach Me English” too! Well, goodluck to him in his Hollywood venture!

  26. 26 MexicanHat July 25, 2007 at 7:06 pm

Hopefully this movie does well. If it does azn guys represent :D

  27. 27 Mingna July 25, 2007 at 7:55 pm

I thought I was seeing the skinny jeong woo seong. In fact it’s the skinny version of jeong woo seong version jang hyuk. he looks differently hot though

  28. 28 Kkachi July 25, 2007 at 8:03 pm

    Be Serious, BeSerious.

Fann Wong is far better known in the world than this guy (The Korean “OUR world” crap notwithstanding). Now that I know he was in Please Teach Me English, I know who he is, but you trying (and failing) to be funny doesn’t answer the question. How did this guy get into a movie with Fann Wong?

  29. 29 Ange July 25, 2007 at 9:37 pm

As much I want to see him make it in HW, I doubt he’ll attract HW’s mainstream crowd. Let’s face it, any Asian actors that are already ‘make it big’ in Hollywood fall into the martial arts specialized/gangster types/bad Asian guys with broken English stereotypes.
The only one that can get out of that situation, though not by far, is probably Ken Watanabe. (And now people will fire off replies and prove me wrong, lolz).
Anyway, I really hope he can make it big. He *is* talented and deserves better and bigger career.

And ‘yuu r so byutipyul’ will never stop being funny.

  30. 30 Daf July 25, 2007 at 10:57 pm

How did this guy get into a movie with Fann Wong? —> By going for an audition? By getting spotted by the director or producer?

Fann Wong isn’t exactly the best actress in the world. She sucked in Just Follow Law. Sure, she had ONE Hollywood movie. But it was a small role, and she had cringe worthy English in Shanghai Knights so I would drop the “she’s a top Singaporean actress” crap.

  31. 31 mawee July 26, 2007 at 12:23 am

yeah I hope he makes it big~ good for him ^^

  32. 32 hmm July 26, 2007 at 1:53 am

I remember he spoke some english in Please Teach Me English. It was really bad though and so was the movie. lol I wish him luck though, and look forward to the day more Asian actors can be recognized and respected here in Hollywood.

  33. 33 monalisa July 26, 2007 at 2:04 am

Kkachi is justified to say that Fann Wong IS a top Singaporean actress. But to say that she’s ‘far better known in the world’ would be stretching it a bit. Her role in Shanghai Knights was a forgettable one. It would be more accurate to say that Maggie Cheung and Zhang Ziyi are far better known in the world than Fann Wong.

  34. 34 Jane July 26, 2007 at 2:26 am

wait wait…what does ballroom dancing have to do with the martial arts he’s learning? lmao ah w/e

i heard he lived in the us for a while (?) or maybe that was someone else =/

this is exciting…a lot of korean actors and actresses going over-seas…good and bad thing really.

    good luck to jang hyuk!!

  35. 35 OMG! July 26, 2007 at 11:39 am

    dwilliams:

i agree that its up to asian and asian americans to define what’s sexy to the rest of the world. but seriously, hollywood thinks lucy liu is pretty. white casting agents have no clue as to how to define asian beauty. as long as they are casting movies and tv shows, it’ll be a long road.

otoh, i really don’t think jang hyuk is gonna’ help define asian manliness. somebody like lee byunghun, bae yongjun, lee jungjae, song seunghoon would be better “leading man” material… doing it in english of course, is an entirely different matter.

  36. 36 Wood July 26, 2007 at 2:14 pm

He is going to Hollywood? Wired! I know his acting skill sucks! He does not look like a big star at all! It seems like people’s taste are lower and lower these days!

  37. 37 Dovey July 26, 2007 at 3:21 pm

With his looks maybe Americans will accept him? He does look hot. :o Hope he is successful in the U.S.

  38. 38 Daf July 27, 2007 at 2:21 am

No, Fann Wong is not a top Singaporean actress.

Just because she’s more famous than her fellow Singaporean actresses does not make her more talented.

  39. 39 ed July 27, 2007 at 3:47 am

just to add to ange’s great post, hiroyuki sanada is another one who’s doing more than the fighting/villain thing. he’s a spaceship captain in SUNSHINE for chrissake (hooray!) ironically he began acting as action star with real skills. the only way to break through barriers is to be a solid gold dramatic actor.

  40. 40 SABRINA July 27, 2007 at 6:16 pm

why is it in singapore if it’s hollywood?
    anyway it seems interesting.

  41. 41 timeout July 28, 2007 at 1:39 am

i just hope he does well, and can i just add that i still can’t get over his physical tranformation from please teach me english->military->to present day. please lets not worry abt if she is a bigger star or he is, they probabily both are, i just hope ethnic minorities will be able to get decents jobs in american movies, without having to play sterotypical “bad asian gangsters or manicurists”. i think asains hating on each other just under values our worth.

  42. 42 bebe July 30, 2007 at 11:22 am

    whoo janghyuk !
    i love this actor.
i think he has enough talent to do well in hw..

“Kkachi is justified to say that Fann Wong IS a top Singaporean actress. ”

Sorry, I never feel that she IS a TOP Singaporean actress. Its just that she has a big fan base.

“But to say that she’s ‘far better known in the world’ would be stretching it a bit.”

Way too over stretch… rubber band wana break. haha. Anyway, her acting is just so-so whereas there’s so much more better asians/hollywood actress than her. And to say that who is this ‘guy’ doing with Fann Wong… it should be ‘Who is Fann Wong’ to be with Janghyuk? Just because she starred together with Jacky Chan doesnt mean a big deal. Janghyuk can act so much better than she does.

  45. 45 Soju April 21, 2008 at 3:18 am

who the hell is fann wong??????

  46. 46 riki April 23, 2008 at 4:56 am

asians just need to do what we blacks have done which make our own movies and let the money speak for hollywood because all they care about. it doesnt matter who is in the movie as long as it makes money and hollywood will see that and start making movies with asians as lead besides martial arts films. we do have harold and kumar, TWO asian leads in a comedy so times are changing but slowly. and why does there have to be a movie where an asian man is in a relationship with a white woman or vice versa? i saw that enough in joy luck club. you can have two asian american actors be the romantic leads in a movie, that is far more beautiful as will be seen in jang’s movie. cant wait to see it.
