Another celeb volunteering overseas makes netizens yap

0728-han-resize.jpg
Jumong star and World-vision spokesperson Han Hye Jin went to Laos on the 9th of this month to volunteer for a week. Similar to Ms. Hyori, Han’s entire experience was also filmed and will air on SBS in October, which makes me skeptical of her true intentions, but netizens are loving her ssang-ul (bare face) pictures.

Pop in:
Is Hyori really volunteering in Ethiopia?

I truely believe shes a wonderful kind warmhearted woman. shes really religious and conservative.

she wouldn’t have been named amabassador-spokesperson for no reason. & actually at daum… people are calling her an angel and really kind-humble. before all this shes been with world vision helping out the elderly ^^

  2. 2 jane. July 28, 2007 at 11:49 am

what is so damn wrong about being filmed while your volunteering? at least these celebrities are making a difference in the lives of the children that they help. jeez, i guess it is right that criticizers can never be pleased. if celebrities volunteer without the camera, people say that theyre not doing anything about these children, but if the camera is following them, they question their intentions. i sympathize them.

I share sentiments with above post, jane.
She is a spokesperson as you say and she is performing her duty.

Popseoul, don’t be another 리플의 미친 네티즌. Once in a while congratulate good deeds as they are – good deeds.

FYI – 리플의 미친 네티즌 means netizen who’s obsessed with comments or replies* added by popseoul

han hye jin is so nice!!! she’s really frugal even though she’s a huge star like she will still take the bus although she can afford her own car. i loved her ever since i watched her in that 금순이 drama. she seems like a genuinely real person

  5. 5 popseoul July 28, 2007 at 12:43 pm

BeSerious – next time, please provide translations when using Korean or refrain from using it.

  6. 6 Mics July 28, 2007 at 12:50 pm

That’s nice that she’s helping out other people. But think about it if you want to help the needy please do it in your own country. I’m pretty sure there are poor people in Korea too. Make Kwon Sang Woo’s better than this because atleast he did it in his own country. And I’m still against charity for publicity but like one comment reply from my comment about Kwon Sang Woo, atleast someone’s benefiting from this.

  7. 7 daneil July 28, 2007 at 12:55 pm

Mics – she already did some already.
she went into the rural areas where the elderly needed some help and meds. =)

  8. 8 Narae July 28, 2007 at 12:56 pm

1 week? That’s it? Is she going to keep track of her “good actions consequences” when she will be back in Korea?? Hope the documentary will be about what those children are facing, Han Hye Jin’s concrete actions and the work of volunteers that are there 27/7 instead of what I’m afraid it might be about (touristic expedition for people in quest of exoticism)…Before you start jumping up and down, I’m not attacking her personally. I still can’t get over Hyo Ri’s fake? mission to Africa cause as far I am concerned, that was pure tourism!

  9. 9 BeSerious July 28, 2007 at 12:58 pm

Clearly I have not fully understood your posting rules. I apologize.
    As you wish popseoul:
“리플의 미친 네티즌” is meant to be (for this particular post anyway), netizens who are obsessed at posting negative comments.

    Note the ‘negative.’

  10. 10 Narae July 28, 2007 at 12:58 pm

    27/7??bwahhhaaa..I’m obsessed with my oppa!

  11. 11 Mics July 28, 2007 at 1:18 pm

@daneil: Great! Then that’s nice =) She must be really into helping the needy then. Who knows maybe she’s also helping out anonymously besides the public appearances that she makes for this charity programs =)

Oh and I forgot to comment about this. Her bare face pic is not much different when she wears make up. I’m surprised she still look as pretty without make up on XD.

  12. 12 parkerlewis July 28, 2007 at 1:23 pm

han hye jin is so damn beautiful. she is all grace.

  13. 13 Eve July 28, 2007 at 1:24 pm

@Mics ~ I don’t think it’s any different if she was helping in Korea or anywhere else. People are people, if they need help, they need help – those in help, and people who are helping them shouldn’t be judged on where their origins are. Of course it’s good to help out your “own” people but there are lots of people out there that need help and many counties don’t even have many people capable of getting help for their own.

I’m glad that Han Hye Jin is helping others and using her spare time to help others lead a happier life.

Don’t these crazy netizens get tired of saying the same thing about everyone? It’s quite annoying.

  14. 14 lyn July 28, 2007 at 1:44 pm

Rolling my eyes right now and saying, “oh please.”

Firstly I will not attack this person’s character, I know she means well. However, a better way is to not bring the cameras.

This publicity stunt may look good for the celebrity but you have to consider the self-esteem of the individuals being helped. I learned in my Ghandi study and Women empowerment class that charity is not the right answer to empowerment or to help people climb out of poverty. Poverty is also a mental complex and not just a economic one. If she really wanted to help these people, she could have privately promoted self-help. Start a program that allow the locals to find their own medicine and finance there own programs. No matter how good you are, you will get tired of helping others because you have to care for yourself. By empowering people, it relieves less work for you.

Ghandi promoted self-help with guidance, but he hated the concept of charity. Charity makes people lazy. charity should only be given to those who can’t help themselves (mentally challenged, and handicaps).

If she really wanted to help people, there are better ways.

was this posted on her cyworld? anyway,, i think her intentions are good, i think she’s kind enough. and love her in Jumong ^^

She is a kind, warmhearted and obviously very pretty girl..

  17. 17 joyce July 28, 2007 at 6:16 pm

ive always been fond of han hye jin..
a lot of people have known of her ‘non-publicized’ charities for a long while now

  18. 18 Gaek July 28, 2007 at 9:12 pm

    Is “Lyn” Popseoul?

I’ve heard unusually good things about Han Hye-jin compared to other female celebrities. But I still think her claim of being virgin is a bit much. I would not be surprised–aside from her current and long-time boyfriend–she had to sleep with a few studio folks to get some of her initial roles.

This happens a lot in Korea:

    http://shock17.com/watch-aPQ8_sAzu_k.html

P.S. The link is potentially NOT WORK SAFE. It’s an infamous video snippet of a Chinese actress who filmed all the time she was forced to have sex with studio executive and movie directors to get roles.

  19. 19 Gaek July 28, 2007 at 9:13 pm

    Lyn,

By the way, everything I’ve read about Miss Han suggests that she’s been working with charities for a long time, and no one knew about it until recently. Is this not correct? And if it is correct, doesn’t that invalidate your view that she’s in it for publicity a la “Whore” Lee?

  20. 20 Mark July 28, 2007 at 9:28 pm

Well look at all the pop stars that get appointed UN ambassadors and I guess you can realize why some people are skeptical of some people’s intentions. Though I’m sure some of them take the responsibility seriously without thinking of the good press.

  21. 21 Gaek July 28, 2007 at 9:46 pm

    Mark,

Like you, I do not hold most female celebrities in a salubrious light. In fact, I consider them glorified prostitutes. But neither do I deny that there are exceptions, and that some are in it for more than money or popularity. Miss Han could be that exception, though I could be wrong–as I don’t have any inside insights.

  22. 22 Brian July 29, 2007 at 1:07 am

I’m skeptical of celebs running around with film crews doing so-called volunteer work. OF course people will question their motives, which is all the more reason why they should do their acts of good quietly.

And as for these ubiquitous “good will ambassadors” for this group or another, I find the whole idea a joke. Chang Nara was (is?) Korea’s goodwill ambassador to Switzerland… what the hell does that mean? What purpose does it serve?

  23. 23 lyn July 29, 2007 at 2:53 am

    Gaek,

    Is “Lyn” Popseoul?
I’m definitely not Popseoul, what you trying to say? I do have different opinions from her or them.

That’s nice that Han Hye Jin works with charity for a long time. I see her generosity and she seems like a nice lady, but I hate the concept of CHARITY. Don’t call it charity, call it or do something else for these people. Giving money or spending time handing out commodities you brought for them doesn’t help people in need.

Gaek, you always manage to piss me off. I, too, don’t glorify entertainers, I don’t care personally about them. My feelings are indifferent. However, for you, you seem to be negatively obsessed with female entertainers. Please stop bad mouthing them by calling them whores or saying that nearly all female entertainers are glorified prostitutes.

If you hate them so much, why are you supporting the system that foster these kinds of behaviors. Stop watching dramas and movies.

  24. 24 Gaek July 29, 2007 at 3:28 am

    Lyn,

I misread your original post. It happens when you are in a hurry and do not believe the author you are reading deserves much thought.

And you really need a good lay. I will not, however, be the person providing that service, as I doubt you satisfy my rather lofty standards when it comes to women I chose to sleep with.

    Good luck.

  25. 25 lyn July 29, 2007 at 5:08 am

    Gaek,

Haha, lofty standards, lets get real.

I truly can’t be compared to the plastic beauties you frequently visit at your local red-light district. It’s okay. I’ve come to terms.

  26. 26 Gaek July 29, 2007 at 5:24 am

    Lyn,

I am too high-class for 588 and such; try VIP escorts, LOL! :)

  27. 27 Lyna July 29, 2007 at 7:24 am

Well.. the publicity does bring more awareness. I think it’s nice of her to go and help out.

  28. 28 Mics July 29, 2007 at 10:58 am

@Eve: Yeah no matter what race you’re helping, you’re still helping but still if you’ve got time and money to fly to another country then why not just help people closest to you first. Well anyway that’s not applicable to her anymore since she’s been doing a lot of charity work in Korea as others said. Maybe she just wants to expand her horizons or something and help out people in other countries as well.

  29. 29 han July 29, 2007 at 5:29 pm

well i know for sure she has better intentions in doing this than hyori or other celebs who did similar stuff..i mean, look at her angelic face!!!
    i love this woman =3
although i must say she didn’t look very flattering in jumong…she looked fabulous in geum soon though…

  30. 30 Jane July 30, 2007 at 3:28 am

for a sec. i thought she was dambi lol
but good for her volunteering n all

  31. 31 Kiongna July 30, 2007 at 12:37 pm

Unfortunately or Fortunately, I believe famous popular people are so necessary in Charity events. For they would command so much more attention and interest from the masses and awareness for the cause – and so would tend to receive more donations to help the cause – the objective of using them. Whether the intention of the artist/famous person/celebrity was primarily for her/his own promotion/advertisement to add to their popularity, to me is irrelavant. Their actions would be for a greater good and that’s really good enough for me.

But I would like to believe that it is their way of giving back to society and them taking responsibility of the world around them.

  32. 32 Passions July 31, 2007 at 3:48 am

We all know the real reason for this type of “charity.”

    It’s called Publicity.

Take away the cameras and the whole entourage, let’s see how many celebs sign up.

    That’s right, ZERO.

  33. 33 studentgirl July 31, 2007 at 3:54 am

Han Hye Jin does seem genuine. She’s known for her charity work, and she’s also one of Seoul’s 2007 good will ambassadors as well.
It’s sad that just because you are a star, you have to be careful about your actions– even good-hearted ones, b/c viewers can easily twist it up. They live difficult lives..

check out what “rain man” writes in the reply section of another blog’s post about the christian missionaries:

    http://metropolitician.blogs.com/scribblings_of_the_metrop/2007/07/a-certain-lack-.html#comment-77012880

it’s somewhat related, but sheds the light on the “importance” of these photographic “evidence”, and what kind of stories they’re intended to tell, for whom.

  35. 35 Karen Ann August 7, 2007 at 2:34 am

She has been appointed ambassador, that’s her duty to perform. Some of you may know World Vision supporting 24 hours famine, they often appointed some well-known stars or high social profilers to raise awareness and it’s not that unusual for them to make the whole experience into documentary. These documents always worth watching, heart wrenching scenes and inspiring stories.

BTW, it often so easy for us to sit on our bums and criticize. Ms Han Hye Jin’s true intentions, might be just that – performed her duty and done a good job. A picture does paint a thousand words, I can see the children adore her. Give credit when it is due.

    Should we all start here

  36. 36 xangxi August 7, 2007 at 3:13 am

Why do most female celebs that do charity work take pictures with poor innocent children?

We never see female celebs taking pictures with the sick, the elderly, the disabled, the deformed, the homeless, those charities that are just as much in need, but will not make good publicity pictures.

I’m sure Han Hye Jin has good intentions, but this is too much of a publicity stunt for me.

  37. 37 honey August 7, 2007 at 11:34 pm

Hey xangxi, she did took care of the eldely, prepared foods, washed, fed, them, etc.
She mainly do the charity works with her church group.
But as you know, as a public figure, you’ll always attract attentions.

The girl has the heart of gold.

Why do most female celebs that do charity work take pictures with poor innocent children?

In Han Hye Jin case, may be this is because she was their ‘mama for days’ and only few selective photos have been taken during that week and proved to us that poor innocent but happy children do existed and they’re for real. Little helping hand goes a long way. Good on ya =)

    Ta~

am a poor who experienced the help of my fellow koreans…

koreans are helpful to their fellow men as well as to their neighbors in need– this charity work roots from korea’s history. after the korean war, koreans received help and charity work from various countries and organizations all over the world.

korea recovered, established and prospered… its about time for korea to extend its helping hands to others who need it..

i see no hidden agenda in this works.. it is an eye opener for me and to others that there are lots of people out there who make us feel blessed because we dont suffer…

and the best way to bring it out is through a VOLUNTEER—who does it by CHOICE….^.^

    ============================================

And speaking of Kwon Sang Woo, he visited the Philippines for the purpose of promoting a particular THE FACE SHOP branch in Glorietta since our Phil. company—Suyen Corporation—bought the franchise of the said Vanity store.

Also, he visisted BASECO Compound in Taguig Metro Manila, where urban poor reside. He donated some units of houses and did the volunteer painting for each house. He said some touchy comments about the children living there—that they are filled with hope and passion inspite of their situation. He did this WITHOUT THE CAMERAS AND PHOTOGRAPHERS SURROUNDED AROUND HIM since he doesn’t want his charity work too much publicity and press release.

This is for World Vision documentary and she’s the World Vision Official Spokesperson. I don’t see what’s wrong with that? Good for her to raise awareness. You go girl!
