Korean reggae artist makes the Billboard Charts

0730-skull.jpg
Korea’s first reggae export, Skull is making inroads in the US market. Korean reggae scene was still in its developing stages when he debuted in 2003, so he came over to the states two years ago, in hopes of obtaining a better following for his music. Skull started to target underground hip-hop scene and it paid off. His digital single, Boom Di Boom Di released in June made the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Sales Charts, ranking at #10 for the week of August 4th. Congrats Skull and good luck with your upcoming album!

Skull’s Boom Di Boom Di

I like the beat, but I can’t understand half the things he’s saying…

Congrats!! But I largely prefer the Korean version he did with S-Kush back in Stony Skunk days…I saw them perform together and they were hot as hell!! Anyway…i wish him luck. I know he will do just fine. Btw, what’s up with that mv???

i dont think that it matters if you cant understand ‘exotic’(?) music. i mean look at sean paul, i dont understand what he’s saying half the time. anyways, good luck to Skull.

how does a sane korean guy end up with a voice like that? I think he must be smokin a lot of pot and put a few rocks in his mouth to make his voice all husky and rasta like.

  11. 11 Kelly July 31, 2007 at 5:17 am

His voice is pretty normal when he talks in a regular convo.

aww this mv is kinda scary. Im understand 95% of what hes saying only cos my parents are jamaican. I think the mv is kinda stereotypical but with CGI ladies dancing. I appreciate him trying to bring something new to the game.

I don’t know much about SKULL, but I am impressed with the way he is gaining momentum in the US and Reggae markets world wide.

His single Boom Di Boom Di debut at 16 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Sales chart (currently #10) and number 31 on the Hot Singles Sales chart. This song has a great hook and you’ll want to listen to it again. On the otherhand, the musical video is less interesting because of its animated/digital characterization of Skull, probably to hide his Korean ethic looks. This is a smart move because Skull’s music can speak for itself. And,from his on-line interviews, Skull is a very likable and humble guy; and is English is very acceptable.

Skull is unique and talented. Some may criticized Skull has being a Bob Marely copycat, but Skull is doing things right by taking his career step by step, and letting the talent speak for itself. No show boating here. I give props to SKULL and wish him success in the US.

omg…a korean reggae artist?..are you fucking kidding me?

  16. 16 lyn July 31, 2007 at 12:07 pm

okay, I’m not too sure about the music. I think he’s trying to hard with those dreads. The dreads pretty much consume his whole face. It doesn’t suit him at all.

awesome. something new. wonder if he likes black women. :)

  18. 18 inez July 31, 2007 at 11:53 pm

Cool guy..exotic looking Rasta wannabe!!..LOL~!!Ya mon!!..
    I wish him success too!

I don’t think Koreans are ready for this I mean I can only imagine the shitload of racism and stereotypes coming from their mouths…Skull is unique lol.

  20. 20 mawee August 1, 2007 at 2:27 am

yeah I hope he gets accepted in Korea.. not bashing tho but some koreans are really stereotypes about mixed nationalities,, but not all. btw heard his song and like it, I guess am impressed :3

“the musical video is less interesting because of its animated/digital characterization of Skull, probably to hide his Korean ethic looks.”

i wondered about that too, so this probably qualifies as “passing”. maybe when he gets well setup, he can come out of the closet:PP
it’s certainly talent when he can sing in the reggae style so different from his spoken voice.

“I like the beat, but I can’t understand half the things he’s saying…”

    ^ haha I agree.

i thought it was in English until I saw the videos on his Myspace. not bad for a newbie (or is it?)

  24. 24 EJW August 1, 2007 at 7:54 pm

The song is definitely in English. It’s West Indian English. I don’t know how I feel about the song. I liked the Bob Marley tribute to No Woman No Cry but this video/song is just offensive. With a massive Ethiopian flag waving in the background, he’s passing as a black man from a tiny paradise island where no one works, everyone just sings and dances around and the women all wear little bikini tops. And of course the lyrics are all about how he’s going to have sex with hot women.
On the other hand, perhaps this is just his breakthrough hit before he wows us with the ‘fighting music’ he thinks he’s making.

  25. 25 unknown August 1, 2007 at 10:38 pm

    go skull!!

  26. 26 Iknowmorethanu August 1, 2007 at 11:59 pm

You people don’t understand what he’s saying because English is not your first language and he’s speaking English with a Jamaican Patois…very impressive for a non English speaker. Who cares if he’s accepted in Korea? He’s accepted in America
and Jamaica….what are you thinking….that’s HISTORIC and you’re busy hating! Get a Life!

  27. 27 SF August 2, 2007 at 5:11 am

hehe, saw his picture on his myspace and his abs are even better in real life XD

  28. 28 yriami August 2, 2007 at 7:08 am

abs droolworthy and i like how he sings go SKULL!

  29. 29 mrod August 2, 2007 at 11:49 am

The song has a nice hook, and I’m not the biggest regge fan either. The video is pretty awful though.

  30. 30 Nessa August 8, 2007 at 3:27 am

Uhmm, who is he? I won’t consider him famous until I’ve actually seen his music video on T.V…or if I actually see him on T.V. ‘Til then, he’s nobody.

    HIS RECORD SALES? 12,000?

  31. 31 rocketfuel September 21, 2007 at 9:08 am

It’s actually funny seeing the switch from Reggae to speaking in English with a fobby accent. It doesn’t take away from the purity he feels in making reggae music, but it’s still funny. It’s like watching Dave Chappelle’s imitation of Lil Jon.

  32. 32 Hulagirl October 16, 2007 at 11:24 am

    0_o I didn’t understand one word…. but go skull!
