Pop quiz: Who’s the owner of those locks?

0819-pop-quiz2.jpg
Can you recognize the mystery person in the picture? You must be wondering, is it a he or a she? From this shot, it can be both, but it’s a man! This man stars the historical drama The Legend.

The mystery man with the silky long hair is Bae Yong Joon. He grew his hair for his drama role, but his resemblance to ajummas can’t be denied.

i think he looks weird. creepy weird. he looks like harry’s gay chinese brother from asia. he should just chop off his hair. although, no doubt, the hair is nice but just not on him. a short hairstyle would do him more justice

  5. 5 blahblahbon August 19, 2007 at 9:50 pm

He looked way better, and…manlier before >_<

  6. 6 ed August 19, 2007 at 10:10 pm

maybe he wanted to get closer to his post-menopausal obasan fans, and took up estrogen treatment…
(dodges the tomatoes, eggs, yonsama mugs and socks flying my way)

Hello PopSeoul I never could find the appeal in this man I always thought he looked slightly feminine and I think we want to get away from that feminine look. My fav actor Kang Dong Won kinda looke feminine a little himself when he had those long locks but when he cut his hair oh boy talk about sexy as hell. He definitely and other men too need to keep your hair short. I dont want to see any man whose hair is longer than a girl’s thats not cute nor sexy.

  10. 10 Dumpling August 20, 2007 at 1:11 am

This long hair doesn’t suit his face especially with glasses. He looks borderline creepy (becuase of the resemblance to MJ) and oddly feminine (which he doesn’t look like in candid situations). In the movie poster he looks great with the hair tied back and in his warrior costume.

The problem with Bae is that he is not photographed well by professionals who should know better. Rarely do I see posed photos were I think he looks great. He always lookes shiny and made up, airbrushed and with the same expression plastered on his face. It is not that the man is lacking in looks. In a natural state he is gorgeous. Truth be told his worst enemey is himself because he is too nice and too submissive (he himself has admitted this) so he does whatever stylists want to do. If they say “wear this”, Bae puts it in. If they say “stand like this” Bae will stand like that no matter how stupid he looks. They will pile on makeup and shine his lips and Bae will not make a squeak to object. His reputation for kindness and politeness is unparalled, but in some cases it causes people to make a shmuck out of him. Truth be told, he looks his best when he is seen just walking through an airport. When he has not been fussed over by stylists and has just dressed himself in some casual jeans and a cool shirt, and doesn’t have any make up on he looks AMAZING.

He needs to start calling the shots and putting his foot down. He pays THEM, after all, not the other way around.

Why so many of you guys are Anti for Bae Yong-jun oppa?(lol i didn’t realize he had a big Anti) Well, I can understand if your just like 12-15yr so you don’t know anything about him and you’re annoyed with his hair becuz of his role for ‘The Legend’. Yes, lol its soo true Ahjumma’s love him, but despite him looking feminine at the moment don’t you guys think he’s a good actor? huh huh huh *nudges u guys* lol

  16. 17 Dumpling August 20, 2007 at 11:34 am

I like him but only very recently started to. I am not CRAZY about him but then again I’m not very crazy about anyone. Well, I might be but it takes a while. I have to know a lot about them and respect them as a person not just liking their looks. But I think Bae is a decent actor–I have only seen him in ‘Untold Scandal’ and he played a cad very well. I HATED that guy and since I know that the real Bae isn’t like that AT ALL, I have to assume he’s pretty good actor. I have a bunch of Korean dramas coming to my house over the next week and I think ‘April Snow’ and ‘Winter Sonata’ are in the bunch, so I’ll see what I think about his acting chops later down the road. Aside from his looks and acting I think he’s a very interesting and intelligent person. He reads books and listens to classical music and actually can COMMENT on it. Did you all know he’s a pretty amazing photographer?? I have seen some of his photos and I am super impressed–being an amatuer photog myself, I am really interested when others have this hobby as well.

  17. 18 Dumpling August 20, 2007 at 11:35 am

And these photos really are terrible.

  18. 19 toothache August 20, 2007 at 11:52 am

you teenage lovers lovers do you think your young idol will get as far as what byj accomplished? i hope that before you bash a person see first his potential and how he’d gain his popularity.

have you ever thought that you’re young idols also have ajummas? no? well you’re all blind or liars.

your idols go to japan bec they saw the potential market that byj has started. and byj did it not but pure luck or that he insisted or pushed his luck to be popular there. he made it bec the japanese market love him.

about the photos that popseoul posted. there are many photos from that series and she/he only posted the ones that are not good.

hey, check out other actors wearing long hair too, do you think they fit wearing long hair? don’t single out a person wearing long hair because of his role there are others who look worst.

  19. 20 eggplant August 20, 2007 at 1:05 pm

it’s not true that he’s submissive and just lets his stylists do whatever they want. he’s a boss and businessman and runs his money-churning empire like a well-oiled machine.

he’s super fake – from the plastic smile to the plastic gaze to the plastic replies he gives at interviews. he tries to exude this gentlemanly aura but it’s all part of his clever PR. he has a battalion of staff to do his every bidding.

it makes me sick how he overprices everything and how he is so money-driven. he used to be nicer and humbler but no longer. his long hair is creepy but then everything about him is creepy.

  20. 21 toothache August 20, 2007 at 1:37 pm

oh for christ sake! for more than 10 years byj has not opened much of himself to public. this is the reason why media are not fond of him. he is shy and keep things to himself. he doesn’t do tv guesting or interview much. he’s not like some other actors whose every move is being publicized. that is why whenever he goes on public he’s the center of attention. his fans do the free promotional activities for him by themselves which make them different. he’s company is small and but he maintains a very young and dynamic staff. he is a great businessman and maintains a very low profile even when his businesses are growing. his stylist has been with him since i think wls. she’s also the stylist of ssh and sjs. again, i hope that before you guys write something bad about byj please know your facts first. check some of his fansites, you’ll read there how he cuts off his fees in wls which is more less than ssh. how he struggled to become an actor, how he manages his businesses, how his co-workers thinks of him, how he is as a boss, what are the good deeds that he had done and how he contributed to many great causes. how he is respected by his peers and many more. again let me tell you that media tend to over emphasize stuff when it comes to byj bec they lack true info/facts about him.

  21. 22 vvvv August 20, 2007 at 1:51 pm

im not 12-15 ive watched lots of his movies. i still think he is somewhat weird. this photo really depicts his true side of being gay. i honestly somewhat think there is homosexuality in him. this picture is really creepy and very revealing about him. i agree w/eggplant. i can’t understand why he is viewed as sexy and so famous. i don’t have anything against gay people but he needs to come OUT OF THE CLOSEST!

  22. 23 fifi jang August 20, 2007 at 2:38 pm

hmmm…gotta agree with *eggplant*..he is filthy rich now!
somehow BYJ is a sly businessman and ..his ‘Joon Bear’ itself costs a thousand bucks!..

  23. 24 erawr August 20, 2007 at 2:39 pm

eventough he look like a woman to me..
but he have a beautiful hair like a WOMAN..
    hahahhh..

I think Koreans have been debating this stuff about
Bae for years and years. I am facinated by the whole
Is he or isn’t he debate- He seems to be able to stir up all this controversy any time he wants to. He hasn’t done anything on screen in almost 3 years except commercials and a dumb 1 day role in Japan, but even POPSEOUL is talking about him before the new series
LOL. The Legend will work in Japan, but will the homefront care? What do you think?

  27. 28 toocutedoggy August 21, 2007 at 12:21 pm

lmao , looks like micheal jackson ..XD

  30. 31 natalie August 28, 2007 at 11:35 pm

my bad…..i can’t belive japanese are so carzy about this drama. duh!

  31. 32 Maybell August 29, 2007 at 5:09 pm

I think this website should have a moderator or something.
Some of our get overboard. YJ fans will not even bother to
come here and defend their man. They all know the facts.
I can’t understand why some hates a very nice and kind
human being. He did a lot of good deeds even most of them
    are not publicized.

It is because of him that K-wave gained a lot of
recognition abroad and we should at least show him some
respect. If you don’t like him, then let it be.

I can’t believe you can talk about a celebrity like this.
There is more than just a handsome face..and those are
    just pictures, for god’s sake.tsk..tsk..

I’m Japanese and it’s his personality that made him
popular here not his looks. He is a good man and a good
actor. He possesses unique qualities that makes him what he
is today and what made him standout from the rest. Those
who found him are really lucky. He is a gem in the industry
and I am proud to be his fan. Can you say the same words to
    yours?

    This is very interesting.

If YJ is a star with lesser value, do you think anybody
will even bother to talk about him when he has been always
silent when he is not working on a project?

It is very important for a star to be visible, otherwise,
he’ll be easily forgotten. There are much more younger and handsome faces out there. Why is it that after 13 years
he’s still where he is now, even brighter and bigger than before?

and what was written in one of the comments above about his
fans and the media. The media will never ever know info
about him if not bec of his faithful fans. His fans are
different from the fans of other stars. They are scattered
all over the globe and can speak different languages.
It’s so amazing how the news in Korean can be translated
into different languages in real time. He doesn’t appear
on TV and doesn’t do interviews but look at his sites.
The news from Japan and Korea is instantly translated
much much faster than any other media.

That’s the big difference between YJ. He has this unique
relationship with his fans. He has no official fan club
but his fans are loving and supporting him unconditionally.

There must be something in him that attracts these smart
and sensible fans which is quite different from the fans
of other stars. They are united regardless of race,
    languages and religions.

Based on the comments here, you can guess who are YJ’s
fans and who are not. Makes sense? Yes, who are making
    sense.

I agree with you Maybell. There must be seasons he became a big star. Not everybody can do that.

  35. 36 blanca September 13, 2007 at 6:03 am

I liked him in Winter Sonata but ehhh not that long hair – it doesn’t look masculine on him! I like long hair don’t get me wrong but that’s too much! I’m still a big fan & can’t wait to see The Legend! Welcome back BYJ!

  36. 37 summer926 October 14, 2007 at 1:06 pm

well…well…well… long or short hair, he is still my greatest korean idol, bae yong joon and no matter how he style his hair… it’s still gorgeous on HIM…. after all, it looks good in him…. he got so nice hair… and true, even better than my hair….

  37. 38 summer926 October 14, 2007 at 1:12 pm

  41. 42 Constructive Critic July 29, 2008 at 12:17 pm

Some people have said, that Bae Yong Joon has many fans b/c he deserves it; that he wouldn’t have so many fans if he wasn’t a good actor.

Well, answer me this, why do people like Paris Hilton have fans? What has she done that is so great or admirable to deserve all those fans.

Or how brilliant of a actor is Keanu Reeves that he too has many fans and is a A list actor.

Many actors who can’t act if their life depended on it, have fans and then there are others, who are brilliant artist but never get noticed by anyone.
