Rain’s plan to take over the world

rain-and-jyp-copy.jpg

Never mind that he doesn’t know how to speak English fluently and had to memorize his lines phonetically for Speed Racer. Never mind that his US concerts were dismal failures. And never mind that he has no idea how to manage his career, because his Hollywood movie is going to revive his career. Or that’s what the 24 year old singer Rain thinks.

As soon as he’s done with Speed Racer, he’s flying over to Korea to handle his management issues, aka announce that he created Rainy Entertainment and fly back to the states to work on his US debut album. So Rain’s grand plan is to release his album when Speed Racer hit the theaters and hope that US teens will be fascinated by his hod bod, dancing skills and small eyes.

0823-rains-plan.jpg

What a great plan! It’s the perfect recipe for failure. Unless Rain is able to provide something original to the hackneyed pop world and can speak the language to freely communicate his thoughts, he’s going to have a hard time making it here in the states, regardless of his movie.

And the question remains, can Pinky take over the world without the Brain?

    FIRST!

I’ve no idea what’s with that oversized scarf, but I hope he manages to get things right, after all that crap.

  2. 2 Mics August 23, 2007 at 10:26 pm

I love the Pinky and the Brain reference hahahaha XD

  3. 3 heyhey August 23, 2007 at 10:45 pm

Let’s not be mean to Rain.. I’m not particularly a fan, but at least he’s one of few Korean celebrities who’s broken the American barrier..

  4. 4 blahblahbon August 23, 2007 at 10:45 pm

Rain needs to quit while he’s ahead.

  5. 5 Princess Changjo August 23, 2007 at 10:57 pm

He should focus with mending his relationship with his western fans or he won’t get very far - especially without improved English.-_-

  6. 6 penny August 23, 2007 at 11:06 pm

it was a BIG mistake of him to leave JYP and his Brain..if i were him i would try really hard to get back into his group cause let’s face it no one knows who Pinky is? oh gosh, the whole english thing learn it, learn it and lastly learn it..what is that tutor doing? seems like he’s more of a photographer than a tutor..

  7. 7 xxcraz_onexx August 23, 2007 at 11:10 pm

ouch that was a lil harsh…
some of its true but no need to bash him so badly
i agree that he needs to learn english (of course)
but maybe he CAN provide something new
after all…there hasnt been a successful asian artist so far in the US, maybe he can be that person
    who knows

  8. 8 Lim J Lover August 23, 2007 at 11:13 pm

He’s doomed to fail. I kinda had high hopes that he would succeed, but if Utada Hikaru couldn’t do it, there’s no way he can.

  9. 9 Mike August 23, 2007 at 11:20 pm

I would say that if JYP was still with him, he had a shot. However, JYP allowing MIN to train under Lil Jon and getting her dress up like a hooker….has made me realize, he’s not the smartest producer in the word. Lee Min Young has a lot of talent and spunk, but it seems like he’s going to completely ignore that and allow her to be a lolita. Either way, Rain had a better chance with JYP because he was Rain’s America.

    se7en > rain.

  10. 10 XiaoXi August 23, 2007 at 11:28 pm

Have you read the latest, from JYP himself, on how he “manufacturers” talent (Village Voice article)? It is creepy. Whether Rain makes it in the US or not, I’m glad he left JYP and hope he sticks with that decision. Whether he makes another dime, at least Rain is away from the JYPE sausage-grinder.

I wish him the best. I like his voice and hope he’ll do more unique and original material suited for him in his US album. I liked his K-dramas, but I don’t know how well those acting skills will translate to a Hollywood big-screen movie: I guess we’ll see.

I hope he makes a crack in the US market and many more can follow him.

  11. 11 amused August 23, 2007 at 11:29 pm

Popseoul sums it up so aptly. I’m a fan but I’ve been covering my eyes recently. He’s got his finger in too many pies. He needs to focus on what works for him - not just what he wants. The chance of him succeeding in the USA is practically zilch. If he carries on ignoring his Korean/Asian fan base - I shudder to think what he can return to if he flops in the USA.

  12. 12 Se7enFan August 23, 2007 at 11:47 pm

Who made that poster for you?? Its hilarious…

  13. 13 Maha August 23, 2007 at 11:54 pm

“Can Pinky take over the world without Brain?” XDD GENIUS!! Awesome graphic ;p And I agree, Rain is so screwed.

  14. 14 narutaru August 23, 2007 at 11:56 pm

Man, Rain has become such a joke to me. If he’s not careful he will need a new body for his ego.

All my friends who are not Asian think that he is a joke. I mean honestly when I first saw him I myself thought he was ridiculous.

I really doubt that he has the skills and talent to take over the world. Actually just because he is such a cocky a** I hope he fails horribly.

I am all for celebrities succeeding in the states, but not when they are average like Rain. Let’s face it, he is average.
His singing ain’t that great. He might have a hot body, but his face could be better. Also when it comes to dancing, he is awesome, but I actually prefer dances who are lighter with their movements.

I just couldn’t be bothered with him anymore and I am glad I stopped buying his records.

  15. 15 ed August 24, 2007 at 12:12 am

    that graphic is damn CLASSIC

not even colbert thought of that one

  17. 17 tok2006 August 24, 2007 at 12:37 am

your vision of the news is so funny! i´ve read the interview in Rain-Asia but i was expecting to read the popseoul point of view! the brain is so ugly… i can´t be neutral, but i don´t focus all my hopes in USA, the world is bigger

  18. 18 sanglim August 24, 2007 at 12:40 am

how old is bi? 24. in the u.s. he acts like he is 17 years old coming out of walt disney.

he is too immature for america. he is too old for the 15-16 year old girls in america, so there will be absolutely no market. a 24 year old man and female american is past this this michael jackson phase.

also he better never say he loves michael jackson. in america and the rest of the world, micheal jackson is a pediphile, sleeps with 7 year old boys and is bankrupt from paying millions to families from being convicted in court.

does he have a girlfriend? does he have a sexual relationship ever. at 24, americans have 2 kids and 4 sexual relationships by that age. he is going to be up on stage and sing about sex and loving a girl. wtf

i wonder if rain left, because jyp “liberace” made some sexual advancements to his boy he raised

    @ed
o man wht id colbert snagged this that would be hillarious!
he should steal the line too
“can pinky take over the world without the brain?”
i would love to see that on the show

  20. 20 teabag August 24, 2007 at 12:58 am

He should stop his American Dreams because it will just continue destroying his fans in Asia!! And I don’t think Speed racer would be a hit!!

  21. 21 popseoul August 24, 2007 at 1:02 am

Kudos to my younger sister for making the graphics! It pays to have an awesome sister who knows animation…thanks a bunch sis!

  22. 22 dwilliams August 24, 2007 at 1:06 am

    narutaru
Rain like most celebrities are cocky. How he will succeed in America will be determined on a multitude of factors. His language skills are a must as people cant afford translators all of the time and he has to come up with something original. What market is he working towards. The R&B market, well Robin Thicke has that on lockdown. The Hip Hop market? Lil Weezy,T.I and others have that on lockdown and 50cent and Kanye West are about to go toe to toe on Sept 11, so where will Rain fit in. Only time will tell. I believe Skullz is the only successful Asian artist this year to break into the American market and he did that through a different route, REGGAE>smart move.

  23. 23 yoomi August 24, 2007 at 1:08 am

yep. he’s pretty much done for.

  24. 24 noelinha August 24, 2007 at 1:12 am

    stupid people

  25. 25 PopSeoul Lover! August 24, 2007 at 1:55 am

haha the article is so humorous!!

  26. 26 Laura August 24, 2007 at 2:25 am

Haha, I love Rain, but I really don’t think he’ll make it in the U.S either.

Not really a pity, because many times artists change radically if they find success in America, and I kind of like Rain as he is now.

  27. 27 shinjinny August 24, 2007 at 2:32 am

I think it’s devilishly clever you used a Pinky and Brain analogy. God, I love you guys. ;-)

  28. 28 arainyday August 24, 2007 at 2:35 am

I think Rain will need to mend his relationship to his fans in the US before even attempting to break into the market here. Especially concerning how badly his concerts were managed, and he should really attempt trying to learn more English. At least the effort put into that would show that he’s actually serious about breaking into the US market.

No one wants to buy something from someone who is unable to fix his mistakes and is cocky as well.

  29. 29 Leigh August 24, 2007 at 2:38 am

=( i dont know much about his whole issue or whatever but it will be sad to see a star have to go down like that…

  30. 30 aileeee August 24, 2007 at 2:40 am

i think that he shouldn’t ignore is asian based fans, because if his career in the US turns out to be a flop, (and it seems that it is indeed pointing in that direction…unfortunately for him) then who is gonna support him if he crawls back to Korea? i’m neutral about him leaving JYP…who knows? it might be the smartest decision he’s made so far-

  31. 31 Di August 24, 2007 at 3:11 am

    Ha…ha…ha…ha.
    AHAHAHAHAHA
Rain is just…aigoo *shakes head in dismay*

  32. 32 maixee August 24, 2007 at 3:37 am

hm…he should just stick to acting and not singing….hope he makes it to the US…cuz if you can’t speak English…its gonna be very hard for him…he ain’t gonna get a lot of fans either…

  33. 33 skca August 24, 2007 at 5:45 am

although i can’t predict that he will make it in the US music industry, i do think that if he releases his album around the time that speed racer opens he’ll have a better chance of making it in the industry b/c of all the publicity that comes w/ speed racer. I hope he doesn’t rush the production of his US debut cd and compromise the quality of the songs. As long as he gets at least one really good hit songs onto main stream radio w/ a good mv then he’ll have his foot in the door in the US music industry.

  34. 34 geekgirl August 24, 2007 at 6:44 am

What Speed Racer? Does he have a big role in that? As I understand it, he was just on-hand for the filming for about a month, which kinda indicates that his role wasn’t a major one.

So … it’s not like everyone who goes to see Speed Racer will take particular notice of Rain, especially if they have never heard of him before. Not enough to go out and buy his CD, anyway.

I don’t think that he will make that big of an impact on Americans through this movie.

  35. 35 XiaoXi August 24, 2007 at 6:54 am

Supposedly, Rain’s screen time on Speed Racer was expanded to 40 minutes–that’s pretty major–and his role plays a critical part in the resolution of the plot. But what really matters is how much screen time/story he has AFTER the editing takes place over the next few months.

And “amen” on knocking off the idolation of Michael Jackson. He’s a pedophile and aligning yourself with him in people’s mind won’t do anything for your own reputation!

  36. 36 sfsdfs August 24, 2007 at 7:08 am

speed racers goona bomb. im fifteen and so are my friends. so far all of them say the concept of the movie is extremely dumb. Hes still one of my favorite Korean stars.. but idk if i can ever trust to go to his concerts again. I heard that his english was really good now or something. i hopes hes fluent because if hes not.. then its will be a BIG failure attempt on the us market. I think se7en will do better even if he doesnt have an album

  37. 37 Dumpling August 24, 2007 at 7:13 am

OMG, best post on this blog EVER.

I just started watching ‘I’m a Cyborg’ and I am really, really impressed by Rain’s acting not to mention the cute faces he can pull. I now see him as two people: one, the contrived pop singer and the other, the talented actor. I DO like the talented actor. The other one can go to hell.

  38. 38 Dumpling August 24, 2007 at 7:16 am

“he’s one of few Korean celebrities who’s broken the American barrier.”

LMAO!! He hasn’t broken ANYTHING but his reputation.

No one in America knows who this guy is and even after the STUPID movie he’s making here, no one will care. Because the movie he has chosen for his “debut” is STUPID. He needs to stick to GOOD Korean movies and drop the singing altogether. If he would get serious about one thing, he would get noticed internationally. Undeniably, the kid has got something.

  39. 39 Hmm August 24, 2007 at 7:18 am

    God bless rain..

  40. 40 Dumpling August 24, 2007 at 7:18 am

“but if Utada Hikaru couldn’t do it”

She couldn’t do it because her music was contrived nonsense, just like Rain’s. What they fail to understand is that we over here in the States have ALREADY SEEN THIS act that these young Asian stars are trying to sell to us. I tried to listen to Utada and I wanted to gouge out my eardrums with a pencil after 3 minutes. Unbearable pop crap that has been done and done and OVERdone in the U.S. and Britain. Enough!

  41. 41 Dumpling August 24, 2007 at 7:20 am

“All my friends who are not Asian think that he is a joke.”

This is what scares me–Americans will LAUGH at him. And although I don’t really CARE what happens to the pop career of Rain, I DO CARE how my fellow Americans view Asian artists. Rain isn’t doing Koreans any favors. He needs to stop it.

  42. 42 Jane August 24, 2007 at 7:23 am

yeah. bi probably made one of the worst mistakes of his life.
he had to memorize his lines phonetically? -_-;; he doesn’t know how to speak english well? and last of all..he left jyp -_-;; though i love bi and all, the decisions he’s making is making me not support him so much anymore..

  43. 43 May August 24, 2007 at 7:50 am

as much as I hate you for bashing Rain, I love the graphic! ^_^ I used to watch that show. lol. I am a fan of RAin too and I don’t think he’s going to make it…but for those who are getting their hopes up, I’ll pray for them and Rain of course :) Oh well, if his singing career flops, he can always be an actor or a model, which they pay quite well.

  44. 44 May August 24, 2007 at 7:52 am

by the way, I’m scared for anyone who tries to make it over here as well. good luck, Se7en. Good luck Min and G-Soul (JYP 2 new trainees) and…who else? oh yeah, good luck, BoA.

    Amen

  45. 45 November August 24, 2007 at 7:52 am

I’m a Rain fan. Really. But I have no idea what’s going on anymore. I just hope he smartens up eventually. =)

  46. 46 geekgirl August 24, 2007 at 7:53 am

Okay … so he has 40 minutes of screen time. Thank you, XiaoXi for clearing that up for me. I didn’t know that. Still … the concept of taking a pop culture icon like the ANIMATED Speed Racer series and turning it into a movie doesn’t appeal to me.

  47. 47 geekgirl August 24, 2007 at 7:55 am

    Go Se7en!!

  48. 48 Kelly August 24, 2007 at 8:25 am

LOL, have to admit the Pink & Brain picture is clever.

  49. 49 Kelly August 24, 2007 at 8:25 am

    Pinky*

  50. 50 NingNing August 24, 2007 at 8:40 am

    he’s definitely going to fail…
    he can’t speak english…

  51. 51 nincom August 24, 2007 at 8:55 am

it’s a guarantee he’s going to bomb it big. say “bye-bye” to your career pretty boy!

  52. 52 swtaznlaydee August 24, 2007 at 8:56 am

yeah. se7en has the upperhand. he has good english. so does big bang. i wonder what kind of english tutor that yg has. se7en is smart for sticking with yg. stupid rain. why did you leave jyp? yeah. i checked out min’s myspace. hopefully he will classy min up. however, i’m loving g-soul and j-lim aka lim jeong hee right now. okay. weird. if j-lim can be classy why can’t min?

  53. 53 polynasian August 24, 2007 at 9:04 am

I guess Rain will debut as a bubble gum pop artist that flop. But good luck Rain and remember Rain to drop a album in the U.S. the songs either has to be partying or some kinda sex song.

  54. 54 dru August 24, 2007 at 9:20 am

    popseoul said it all

i mean im asia, and i think he’s a joke, if i think that, what will all the other non-asian teens think

rain needs to stop trying to break it in america and stick to asia

  55. 55 rachel August 24, 2007 at 9:26 am

well that was a nasty article. always have to call his eyes small. lol. who brings anything original to pop these days, so that comment relates to all pop artists, korean or american. an artist doesn’t have to know perfect english to be successful in the american market. As long as he or she is passionate, they’ll do well. So much hate towards Bi. its a shame.

  56. 56 leash August 24, 2007 at 9:27 am

leave him alone. He will make it and he will be laughing all the way to the bank.

    peace

    p.s. I am american and I suport him…….so there

  57. 57 t dub August 24, 2007 at 9:38 am

yo Rain is da gay son.

  58. 58 leash August 24, 2007 at 9:39 am

I agree with you Rachel. I don’t even speak a lick if Korean but I love his music.
Our market sucks and we need something new.
I also think that people really need to get off of his **** because, he can do what ever he wants to do with his life and his fans don’t necessarily have to be Asian he should be able to have fans all over the world.

  59. 59 Ami August 24, 2007 at 9:49 am

Yes, an artist does have to know perfect English to become successful in America.
The only exception is to speak Spanish because that’s a big enough demographic.
    So he’s 0 for 2.

No one is going to be interested in an artist who can’t interview with out a translator. How will he promote himself? He could barely speak for himself at the Speed Racer press con. It’s awkward. No one wants someone on TRL with a damn translator standing next to them.

It’s not hate but there comes a certain point in every fangirls life when you have to be realistic. Do you know how many people are passionate about music and still have no record deal? Tons.

The different between American music and Korean music is that even though American popular music is factory made, Korean artist still copy it. Which makes it even more unoriginal. Why would any American listen to Rain do R&B when they can listen to Usher or JT who are guaranteed to do it 10x better?

This is my main problem with Korean artist/ and their companies who are aiming for an American debut. They think they know everything when they know nothing. They think al l they need is an American producer and the rest will fall in line. Not. Like JYP w/Min. Marketing is all wrong because even though he thinks he knows everything he knows nothing. And then having her work with lil jon. The king of crunk. Doesn’t even sound right. Is he really trying to put her into a market with Ciara? This is were the inexperience continues to show over and over again with Korean companies. Marketing & promotion.
Sometimes it best to sit back and let someone who knows what their doing handle it.
If one thing can be learned is that Asia is not America. What works there wont work here.
If you don’t know the market or understand the people then let someone else handle it. I don’t know, maybe like an American company. Be hands off once in awhile. Stop trying to control everything.

  60. 60 mookie August 24, 2007 at 9:49 am

HAHAHAHAHAHA ‘can Pinky take over the world without the Brain?’ I’m crying lol

get a grip fangirls, US is not a tolerant place we want to fool ourselves in believing, general mass dont care about anything other than American. Ppl in general dont even go watch foreign movie when imagery alone can convey a lot, and stuff/artistry really get lost in translation…let alone music when it’s mostly audio.

If Bi is not really picking up his english and he really insists on breaking in US, maybe learning Spanish is an alternative? And honestly, I’m just trying to help his dire demise.

  61. 61 TAY August 24, 2007 at 9:54 am

OK, everyone needs to stop talking out of their ass. Really, why wish rain bad luck, there is no need to talk so negitve, he has fans all over the world and who knows what could happen. AND T DUB WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, REALLY ARE YOU GAY?IF NOT KEEP QUIET

  62. 62 t dub August 24, 2007 at 9:57 am

    HE’S WACK YO.

  63. 63 Meru August 24, 2007 at 10:02 am

Haha, I love the poster and the analogy, one of the reason why I keep reading you guys sometimes. I do have the impending feeling that after his US debut, his 15 mins of fame will be over.

But on another note to Dumpling. Hikaru Utada is a good Jpop singer, she made a bad move making that US album, and she made a good move backing out and focusing on making japanese music. That girl can sing, so don’t hate the artist, when you just hate the poppy genre :P

  64. 64 pete August 24, 2007 at 10:18 am

i think Americans racist to us Asians, thats why Rain is treated so badly in US.

  65. 65 sanglim August 24, 2007 at 10:26 am

america today is totally different than korean/asian countries. korea presently is in a childlike/ fantasy/ plastic surgery dream.

americans like tough older guys w/character and real personality. it seems in korea 30 years old is over the hill. in america our top stars are close to 40 years old.

what does this kid represent??does he actually have a viewpoint, substance. he is a 15 year old who actually is 24 years old. he is a dancer whom jyp manufactured.

when 14-15 yld american guys look at this 24 year old childlike trying to sing in english (songs he didnt write, which is huge difference in american music ex ugly james blunt) dressed liked michael jackson and gloves he will be thrown off the stage.

they would think he is a fruit.

NOW WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE HARDCORE BLACK RAP KIDS GOING TO THINK, when he trys to rap in english.

WHY DO YOU THINK THE ASIANS WHO DID MAKE IN TH U.S. MARKET are older non beautiful.

im korean american and i never knew about the state of korea since a month ago. the next big star from korea will be a actor/actress and not from the music side. probably in 5 years a 30-35 year old character/action english speaking korean actor/actress will explode in the scene.

    maybe one of you girls

  66. 66 Nhi August 24, 2007 at 10:32 am

    I miss this cartoon! Classic.

  67. 67 geekgirl August 24, 2007 at 10:36 am

Passion alone does not guarantee you fame.

  68. 68 lyn August 24, 2007 at 11:08 am

I don’t quite understand the bashing, unsupportive and childish comments people leave here. No one here is being force to support any of Rain’s movies or concerts. Although everyone is entitle to their opinions, why can’t you just be happy that someone like rain can prove that he can make it in and out of his own country. Those who hates only proves their jealousy because they can’t achieve what Rain can. Aza! Aza fighting oopa Rain!

  69. 69 sLaVe August 24, 2007 at 11:17 am

narutaru- your first sentence made me want to give you a hug :)
Cocky ass indeed. Just the way he got famous with his “music” pisses me off. And I have to disagree, his dancing to me is OKAY… only because all I ever see him do is Pop and sometimes Lock… and that’s about it.

Like Mike said, Se7en > Rain. You basically just opened an even BIGGER path for Se7en, and you’re still slowly closing yours :) Too bad *does a happy dance*

Dumpling - Nah, I’d like to disagree. She obviously choose the wrong songs to promote her album (for the little promotions that she did! I never even knew she came to the freaking states before I was a fan of hers!). Easy Breezy? Gawd, that’s got to have been the stupidest thing she’s written. Now if it was something like “Tippy Toe” that could have totally worked. I hated her Exodous album as well, but I gave it two more listens, and actually LISTENED to the lyrics, and it worked goof. Girl can write in Japanese, that’s for sure

I pray with you, May. Especially for Se7en and BoA, even though I have confidence. But let’s face it, Asians are only known for martial arts and now for language. Other than that, we are pretty much thought of last for entertainment.

polynasian - aren’t that his songs in Korea already anyway? *rolling my eyes*

    1. I never liked Rain, never will. His singing isn’t just what I would consider good.

    2. He’s gonna have a hard time making it big in the American industry. If he can’t speak English or Spanish, all he can do is go downhill. I’ve talked with my friends. When I ask them to listen to my songs or some that have English in it, the reaction is in between amused. If they can’t understand you, forget about trying to hit the American music market.

    3. This is to lyn - We’re not hating him, we’re stating facts that might as well help him from complete embarrassment. Have you ever seen an Asian artist gaining recognition in America at all? There are plenty of them here who have very nice voices. Some know how to speak English really well, Vpop Trish Thuy Trang and Cardin Nguyen or Jpop Utada Hikaru. The fact is that they are Asian and no matter how we look at it many Asian’s can’t make it big in the American industry.

    4. A lot of us always say how we wish that our favorite artist would come to America or something, but the point is the amount of supporters can never reach what we see in other Asian countries. What is set in the mind of most Americans about the Asian music is that it’s just some bubbly copy of the American music. They just won’t bother.

  73. 73 amused August 24, 2007 at 11:42 am

I consider myself his #1 fan in my country (yea I know, fangirl comment). I enjoy reading the comments here because largely, they are objective and speak volumes about his sad state of affairs. Most of his fans still think everything is hunky-dory and that he’s on top of the world. Wake up and smell the coffee!

Rain should stop relying on his name ie. “superstar in Asia” and make practical plans towards ensuring longevity in his career. Ignoring the Korean/Asian fanbase to concentrate on his American dream is pure foolishness.

I’m not wishing him bad luck. I’m just being REALISTIC - like a lot of people here.

  74. 74 Kelly August 24, 2007 at 11:47 am

    Um.. Go Skull? :D

Though I wish Rain the best here and the rest too. I just don’t like how the media/some fans overhype his fame & ability..

Example: It stated that Rain [in English] wrote the lyrics for Hyesung’s “Island” song, but it didn’t say Bi or his real name in Korean. And the majority of his fans think he really did write it. But it’s very possible someone else has that same moniker.. so why would he write for someone else and not his own songs?

  75. 75 Seol-a gWen August 24, 2007 at 11:47 am

should have stayed with JYP or unite with Se7en or idk … at least resorce SM Entertainment

  76. 76 ed August 24, 2007 at 12:10 pm

“Ignoring the Korean/Asian fanbase to concentrate on his American dream is pure foolishness.”

that’s just the classic guy behavior isn’t it? why settle for the same (diehard, LOL) burger every night at home, when you can go out for fancy steak? as it turns out, the line is very long, and the you can’t even make heads or tails out of menu, or what the waiter’s saying…

    LOL

    based on what everyone said…

bubble gum pop + young, tight body + no english + no particular message/personality relevant to american culture = rain’s best bet is to secure the older gay niche market?

unlike the jaded, opinionated american teens, the 40-something american gay guy with disposable income probably welcomes the camp factor of an exotic, young asian guy with the perfect twink physique. hey, it worked for zhang ziyi and maggie Q with straight guys.

  77. 77 CanDance August 24, 2007 at 12:16 pm

I hope he succeed in everything because Rain is a very hardworking artist. Wish him all the best.

    LMFAO

  79. 79 greentea August 24, 2007 at 12:30 pm

i hope everything works out well for him. He was what got me into the whole korean music and movies and everything else. But i do agree, things have gotten outta hand for him.
Try to pull your self together RAIN!

    Pinky and the Brain….., HILARIUOS!

  80. 80 Yang August 24, 2007 at 12:34 pm

    Dear Rain,
Start with these few tips on your quest to rule the world(aka the US demographic).

    1) Buy a copy of the Rosetta Stone ENGLISH program.

    2) DO not I repeat DO NOT hire any friends or family members for anything.

    3) Choose a well respected American agency to represent you both in management & promotion. Here are my recommendations for your consideration:
    CAA
    William Morris Agency
    Live Nation
    AEG Live

    4) Put on a FREE concert in the States to amend the fiasco that was in June (no need to go into details, you know what a disaster it was)

    5) Read the comments posted on blogs, forums, websites, etc. Start with Popseoul. This, I guarantee, will help you understand your current status.

    6) Give yourself some time off. You need it.

  81. 81 Christie August 24, 2007 at 12:41 pm

-_- Even with the Brain, there is no way he’s going to succeed in the US. Guaranteed.

More power to JYP, Rain needs his old boy again.

  82. 82 Jane August 24, 2007 at 12:42 pm

I don’t even have anything to say about Bi anymore. This whole situation of him debuting in US and all that crap is just dragging on and on, does anyone still care? Everytime you make a post about Bi (Which is always 100% negative), people flock to it and either agree with your biased, ‘witty’ comments of him, or disagree and defend him. Theres just no point now. I give major props for whoever pshopped the first picture. I can’t stand looking at JYP’s face for more than 10 seconds though.

  83. 83 Moe Moe August 24, 2007 at 12:46 pm

Hey, do you really know about artist? Wheather you can speak english or not people can feel his music, that’s the way to communicate to any other people. Don’t you think so? Rain is greatest artist for sure. So he will communicate with people with his music and acting abilities I believe. With JYP? It’s up to them. That’s more on business. They know what they need to do. We don’t need to interfere about that. But, Rain is still Ranin and more and more Rain in future.

  84. 84 Naqiyyah August 24, 2007 at 12:47 pm

WHAT??? U guys like so totally have to chill!!
    He’s doing his best OK??
I agree, he shouldn’t left JYP. But hey, people make mistakes, like u don’t. So leave him alone. Nuff said.

  85. 85 pete August 24, 2007 at 12:48 pm

I don’t understand why cant Rain be famouse here if William Hung is.

  86. 86 leash August 24, 2007 at 12:56 pm

    pete is the man…………..LOL

  87. 87 Jenny August 24, 2007 at 12:58 pm

William Hung is famous because his singing makes people laugh. And if you wanna be a famous Asian in the entertainment business, you have to either…

    1. Be funny and all Asian for people to laugh

    2. Be able to do Jackie Chan stunts

How are people going to feel the music? As I’ve said before Americans don’t bother to listen to Asian music because they don’t like the bubble gum pop style that the Asian music seems to have. Also they hate most of Asian pop because they copy from American pop. Plus if he can barely speak English and sings in Korean most people in the states will ignore him, and by ignore I mean his whole plan of taking over the world will go downhill.

Rain can make it big if he just concentrates on the Asian market, but for him to make it on the Western coast it’s going to take some long years of English lessons.

  88. 88 Sid August 24, 2007 at 1:25 pm

he’s a great entertainer but you have a point about his English, I saw him on a interview and he needs a lot of help if he is trying to get into the US market.

  92. 92 NolangerBifan August 24, 2007 at 2:36 pm

Yang , I agree with you and one more point

7.Rain, do your best that people getting their refunds.

this is strictly business to me why he will completely fail.

square peg trying to fit a round hole.

what age group is he targeting??

first he will laughed at by the white/black male/female crowd with his michael jackson impirsonation. they will laugh that he is doing this childish crap at the age of 24. 17 year old girls have kids and experienced life and will laugh at his immaturity. he sings songs about what other people wrote about relationships. its a joke.

americans want sincerity. they like when stars are real.

really the only shot he has is the 12-15 korean american teeny boppers. and really where is this massess of koreans. there is none other than los angelos.

korean girls/boys are 10 years behind in maturity than a korean american living in america. don take this the wrong way. i would rather marry a native korean girl, BUT YOU ARE IMMATURE IN YOUR AGE.

  98. 98 DJKim August 24, 2007 at 4:39 pm

Rain has done nothing special in the US than other oversees Asian entertainers in the past. It’s ridiculous to consider that he’s made in the US or that he is the only Asian person with the best chance to make it.

Most of Rain supporters that believe Rain is going to be the next best thing to Slice Bread in the US are just teenage girls with no sense of the world who are just idol worshipers.

And those who believe, Rain will never make it in the US because the US is racist toward Asians, have a huge inferiority complex themselves.

Let’s just face it. Rain is a mediocre talent who’s not even good looking. Although, he does look’s good in clothes due to his height and body proportions and can dance, there are many people that can do the same.

Rain made it in Asia because of its lower standard of talent and higher emphasis on Idols.

It funny everyone continues to make the same arguments for and against the talentless RAIN. But the best of this blog is the PINKY & THE BRIAN ANALOGY!!!! NOW THAT IS CREATIVE TALENT. GO POPSEOUL!!

  99. 99 Shila August 24, 2007 at 4:40 pm

Can someone get Yang’s recommendations to Rain immediately?

  100. 100 lili August 24, 2007 at 4:49 pm

You’re right on. Rain better has some good tricks up his sleeves or he’ll bomb. If he fails in the US, he won’t be seen in the same way in Asia and Korea again. So he might ruin his reputation completely.

But then, I think JYP would also have failed in making Rain a big star in the US. JYP just created a big hype without delivering any results.

Rain’s looks like an oddball in that pic. He should lose the scarf and hat.

Whatever, I kinda like Rain and just wish him the best.

  101. 101 tok2006 August 24, 2007 at 4:50 pm

It’s very funny to see antis and fans’ replies on this blog..

  103. 103 DT August 24, 2007 at 5:20 pm

Rain seriously need to pick a hell load of shit if he wants to make it in the US. He’s pretty much dug himself a DEEEEP hole rite now. Also i don;t think speed racer is going to help him for some reason. If Americans sees rain in the movie and his English is horrible, they are seriously not gonna take him seriously. Even if rain stayed with JYP i don’t think he’s gonna do too well. As ppl mentioned b4 JYP thinks he noes everything about the us market, but i doubt it. it seems like he’s making min in another generic teen singer, and frankly we already have enough. However depsite all this i’m pretty sure an Asian can make it in the US. There’s already some asians in the music industry. One of linkin park’s lead vocalist is half Japanese. Also there’s Chad Hugo of N*E*R*D, not to mention he’s a grammy winning producer.
Maybe Rain should have gone on the Colbert Report liek they asked him xP. He coulda gotten the Colbert Bump lol, cuz rite now he needs all the help he can get.

What are some other underrated Asian-American artists?

  105. 105 Dumpling August 24, 2007 at 6:41 pm

“i think Americans racist to us Asians, thats why Rain is treated so badly in US.”

Wrong. Americans are racist against SILLY people. One thing Americans love without a doubt is cool people–whatever their race or gender, show us a cool person and we will flock to him/her. We don’t like silliness.

  106. 106 Oh Wonbin August 24, 2007 at 8:16 pm

Rain should go back to JYP! :)

  107. 107 munch August 24, 2007 at 8:31 pm

i can’t see why it’s a big deal for asian stars to make it to the US.
    ok, more money, more fame.
but i seriously think hollywood is missing a lot without the asian entertainment.
meanwhile, we can be happy with what we have.
i got tired of the r&b and the bling blings of America so i switched to Asian where i find more sense in the music.

you know, Japan has a lot of talented artists. and they’re happy with their own market (bec. it’s a big one already). Johnny’s Ent has got such fabulous boy groups that any asian teen can think they are better off with the american teens. i mean, the JE talents can sing, dance, act altogether.
we have jay chou who’s r&b style makes a lot more sense and a lot more style than americans. and of course, a lot lot more.

but going back to rain, if he hasn’t taken over Asia yet, (his music doesn’t stand out, and it’s not like he’s the biggest seller here), he’s gonna have a hard time in the US.

  108. 108 May August 24, 2007 at 10:22 pm

Actually, I have to correct you about one thing. In the cartoon series, it was the BRAIN who wants to take over the world. Pinky just follows him and do whatever Brain tells him to.

  109. 109 SnowPanda August 25, 2007 at 1:23 am

*sigh* I support Rain as a fan. But I just hope he has something comming up that will save his career because right now he has turned his back on the Korean Music Industry. Only focusing on his American debut and well if he doenst save himself in America, he wont be as well known in Korea when he returns. But i will pray he will save himself. Oh yes. Please get Yang’s avice to Rain soon. Rain! Fighting!

  110. 110 Ella August 25, 2007 at 1:47 am

I will be so embarassed for him if he fails in his attempt to “make it” in the U.S.

He seems like such a passionate, hard, decent guy - we cannot deny that he didn’t work extremely hard to make it this far.
What happened with his concerts wasn’t entirely his fault.
I’d hate to see him “crash & burn” in the U.S. Because that’s a BIG deal.

Right now I see Rain’s style like the late 1990s - when NSYNC & Backstreet Boys were BIG. NOW - it’s different, you know? He needs to get more modernized with U.S. style in music.
Even Justin Timberlake changed his style - compare his first album and then his second. He focuses more on a new, upbeat tempo rather than trying to show off good dance moves.
And I think what Rain is about is a lot of dancing - which the U.S. aren’t primarily interested in nowadays in musicians.

Maybe he needs to hook-up with producers like Justin Timberlake and Timberland. They’ve been big and popular lately…

But then again, I sometimes feel that I wouldn’t want him to be “big” in the U.S. because that fame might taint his image. Don’t get me wrong, I love living in the States, but I found it so refreshing to turn to Asian music cuz it was “cleaner” and a bit more innocent - like Bi Rain’s image.

I don’t wanna hear about who he’s dating and/or having sex with. Or if he went clubbing, did drugs/alcohol, blah, blah… stay in Asia Rain!

  111. 111 geekgirl August 25, 2007 at 2:37 am

People who defend Rain as if he’s God crack me up. How many times will you be disappointed by this mis-managed, misguided individual before you give up on him? How much more money will you spend on his cancelled concerts, CDs, photographs, etc before you realize you were foolish??

Rain won’t make it in America. Why? Well .. we already know he can’t speak English, which means that he won’t have command of the nuances of the English language. So, when he sings, his English will sound contrived and ridiculous because he doesn’t understand.

Like at his concert in Las Vegas when he called the audience his “babies”! WTF?? I died laughing and it’s still a joke with me and friends to this day.

Is his US-produced CD going to be in English or Korean? If it’s in English, dang … who’s gonna buy it? And if in Korean … double dang … who’s gonna buy it? See what I’m getting at?

  112. 112 kupuna96815 August 25, 2007 at 4:00 am

I think he might have a SLIM chance, but only IF everyone forgets about the money they lost on concert tickets. (Which were waaaay overpriced, at least here in Hawaii)

  113. 113 Ami August 25, 2007 at 4:49 am

It’s hard for Asians to break into the music scene.
No matter what, there are many people who are gonna take us as “jokes,” “wannabes,” and “copy-catters” for wanting to be an Hip-Hop/R&B/Pop/Rock star.

Hey it took a while for the Latinos to break in, the Asians just need their time and a good chance. I just don’t know if it can be Rain or Se7en.

Latinos made it because their population grew immensely in the States, so they have a lot of “fans” to back up the Latin Artists through support. Then the Caucasians eventually warmed up to their type of music… I live in California - and the music I hear nowadays are greatly influenced by Latinos.

  114. 114 rach August 25, 2007 at 4:55 am

Aww. Now I feel sorry for the kid. The main problem here is that he doesn’t know what he is doing. JYP has babied him ever since he came out as an artist. He was seriously Rain’s brain. He talked for him, moved for him, everything. And all of a sudden Rain is shoved into the world of grown-ups, not knowing how to speak or move for himself. As much of an opportunist as JYP seems to be, Rain had more of a chance with him. The best thing he can do now is take a break and really think about his priorities. If he decides to go into the American music, then he needs to really sit down and work hard. If he wants to do movies instead then he needs to just focus on that. Personally, I’d rather have him just go back to kpop and his Asian fans who have all been so loyal to him… well most anyways. But whatever he chooses, it’d be best if he took a well-deserved vacation and just let things settle around him. Get a girlfriend (or a boy… whichever one he prefers). Start a business. Travel. Do whatever. Then maybe, in due time, people would’ve forgiven and forgotten all that happened this year and he’d be back on the track.

Also, a serving of humble pie wouldn’t hurt.

  115. 115 Tamira - RAIN CAN BE A WORLDSTAR IF.. August 25, 2007 at 5:02 am

There is only one way RAIN can become a world mega star.

APPEAL TO THE GAY EURO/AMERICAN MEN. HERE ARE THE REASONS

    1. INSTANT FAN BASE = ALL GAY MEN HAVE AN ASIAN FETISH. THEY WILL BE MORE LOYAL THAN HIS CURRENT FAN BASE.

    2. GAY MEN WILL IMMEDIATELY LOVE HIS DANCING AND HIS PUMPING HIPS.

    3. GAY MEN WILL FORGIVE RAIN’S MEDIOCRE SINGING TALENTS AS THEY ARE MEZMERIZED BY HIS TIGHT GAYISH BODY.

    4. SINCE ALL GAY MEN HAVE MONEY, THEY CAN SUPPORT HIS EXPENSIVE CONCERTS. THIS WILL INSURE A WORLD TOUR WITHOUT CANCELATIONS!!

This is an instant recipe for RAIN’s INSTANT WORLD STARDOM … COM’ON RAIN DO THE DISCO!!!!!! sHAKE THAT BOOTY - GEORGE MICHAEL STYLE!!!

MAYBE RAIN & JYP CAN COME TOGETHER AND FORM THE SECOND COMMING OF WHAM KOREAN STYLE. get the yoke he he.

    They’re Pinky and The Brain
    Yes, Pinky and The Brain
    One is a genius
    The other’s insane…ROFL!

Yes Rain is Asian…all this talk about Asian artists coming together w/ Asian fans backing them up…You got to realize that “Asians” don’t all speak the same language. If you want Asians to band together and support an Asian artist, you first got to have “Asian” fans speak one common language to better understand each other. In most cases, it will most likely be in English. Oops, my bad…Rain hasn’t accomplished that one yet, and also the same goes for Se7en.

  119. 119 Lily August 25, 2007 at 10:52 am

I like the Pinky and the Brain reference too. I’m a fan of Rain, but I totally have no confidence in him making it big in the US. First of all, it would be smart to learn english. JYP keeps on saying how if he didn’t learn english, he would be nowhere, so I don’t understand how come he didn’t teach Rain when he made him.

  127. 127 XiaoXi August 26, 2007 at 12:09 pm

    Re: Ugg’s 5 Reasons:

    1. No, he’s not a world star, but he is known throughout Asia, which is a a very large market. Having the confidence that comes from that will be a plus IF Rain wants to take on the US/Canada.

    2. JYP is stuck in the 80s and he is creepy (and apossible pedophile–sorry, I just get a really bad vibe from him). I’m glad Rain moved on and hope he hooks up with a more up-to-date producer here in the states and comes out with stuff that will really showcase that voice I love so much.

    3. He has been studying English, yet seems too uncertain of his ability to actually use it–even when it would have been really important, like apologizing for the huge screw-up with the US concerts. I understand–I would rather die than have to speak the languages I’ve studied, but it is time for Rain to buck up and start using the English he has learned. That’s the only way he become really fluent.

    4. His music and dancing are definitely from the 80’s and 90’s. I love his voice–I fell for that voice before I had any clue who Rain was–so I think with more modern western style music choices, he could really be amazing. He is a good dancer, but it just doesn’t do anything for me…

    5. Supposedly, he has 40 minutes of a 90-120 minute movie: that’s a third or more of Speed Racer that will have Rain in it. He’s not the star, but that’s not exactly a minor role.

Will he be successful in the US? Who knows. He already has much to be proud of. So, if he wants to try to break into the western market, why discourage him? What will it hurt?

I wish him luck, for him personally, but also because I like the Asian culture and hope that I’ll be able to find more of it in the US.

I admire Rain/Bi for taking such a huge risk. It’s hard to get into the American market, but some foreign artists have done it(i.e. Salma Hayek, who still has an accent). I wish him the best!

His pronouncation of English isn’t bad though? Unless he was practicing his ass off or something. I thought his English was very clear and understandable in his English version of “Tango”.

And what his real motives may be, I hope he does gain some sort of success here in the U.S.

His rendition of Sad Tango wasn’t bad - although I wonder how many takes it took for him to get it right. Kudos to him for that his attempt. I can’t say the same for his spoken English - it is squeaky at times and it grates on the ears (I last heard it in Bangkok in June 2007). Everytime I hear him speak - I just want to tell him to “shut up”. I feel embarrassed for him.

The problem with his USA plan is that he doesn’t seem to have any sort of back-up plan if he fails. He’s been tooting his own horn so much that if he doesn’t go, he’d look like a fool. I say he’s a bigger fool to go ahead with USA because this will destroy the Korean/Asian fanbase - since he will be effectively “missing in action” if he stays in the USA for one year.

yeah…the english thing does bug me too. although I don’t know how he pulled off a clean, accent-less performance in the song “Man Up” with Omarion. if he can clean up his english like that…maybe he’s got something.:)

I also think it’s interesting to watch the fluctuating positive and negative comments on popseoul’s posts. although the negative ones seem to rule now.

*sigh* let’s see where this goes. good luck rain
