Dragon War premieres in Los Angeles

Dwar-dir1

The Korean made-for-Hollywood movie, Dragon Wars (D-war) premiered in Los Angeles at the Egyptian Theater on Thursday. The cast and crew, including the ex-comedian director, Hyung Rae Shim, actor Jason Behr, Amanda Brooks and Robert Forester were in attendance.

The movie grossed over 1.5 million USD on the first Friday, September 14th. Not bad at all. Also, since we last reported, the number of screens have been upped to over 2200 across the U.S. That alone should be enough to bring in more bored movie-goers to see the film so that Mr. Shim can fill up his coffers.

And as mentioned before, the movie is getting mixed reviews – at Rotten Tomato, the review are mostly negative, but I was surprised that the New York Times give Dragon Wars a decent review saying that “It is such a breathless, delirious stew, it’s impossible not to be entertained, provided – this is crucial – you have a sense of humor.” I have a sense of humor and I didn’t think this movie was “breathless or a delirious stew.” It was just a stew with no flavor. I think the NYT writer must seriously be blind or bored out of his mind. Or perhaps some Korean must have given him a few apple boxes (full of money) or his wife/partner is Korean. There must be a good reason for this review.

Did you see the movie? Tell us what you think.

D-wars is the William Hung of Korean cinema. Where as Park Chan Wook and Ji-woon Kim (tale of two sisters) has brought us great international acclaim….D-wars will set us back 10 years. There’s not even style over substance in Dwar, just a bad story and cg.

ahhh…I had hoped the US version would’ve been re-edited to something more coherent…guess not.

I cringe at the thought of people saying its a Korean movie.

I read the NY Times Review and I don’t think it’s positive at all. I think basically they are saying it’s so bad it’s good. In other words it’s entertaining in it’s horribleness. Which i saw it and it was. It’s an awesome film to go to with a friend and heckle. Me and my buddies had a good time. I highly recommend it!

how wonderful…it finally started in america. i’m just praying it doesn’t come to canada too. i guess i can understand ppl finding it funny because the plot is so horribly done. i still laugh thinking about it…i wouldn’t be surprised if it receives less than 50% on rotten tomatoes. the movie’s quite a disgrace to korean filmmaking. no offense to anyone who found it good.

I told all my friends about this movie and how bad it was going to be and now my boyfriend wants to see it. WTF. It looks even worse than a Sci-Fi channel movie.

It’s getting horrible reviews over here. One of the best movie rating sites on the web, RottenTomatoes.com, gave it something like a 12% rating. HORRIBLE. Only the absolute worst of the worst get a rating that low. Even undeniably BAD movies will get a rating in the 20s or 30s. But not this piece of junk.

oh how i love jason behr but man does he look drunk in that picture. I probably won’t watch this movie but I think that people watch it on the big screen because it’s an action movie – it has that much more effect.

I took 14 of my friends to this movie, we all thought it was hilarious, but a lot of people walked out and there were only like… 3 other people in the theatre, that was friday opening night.
It was funny as hell though.
There were so many plotholes we almost had heart attacks. Like considering age 20 in ANCIENT KOREA is age 19 here..
But its ok, we all had a helluvah time, and couldnt stop qouting the most idiotic parts. I dont think alot of people will enjoy this and considering how few people were there, I doubt that it will be in theatres long.

The NY Times Review wasn’t a positive review…Popseoul you have to understand Sarcasm and also if you don’t understand a word look it up in a dictionary….lol.

“Breathless, delirious stew” is not a positive comment at all. Basically the author is saying “the story is so choppy and full of loopholes, if you have a good sense of humor you will be entertained”.

Everyone misunderstands from time to time. I love your blog!

this movie was so hysterical! it cracks me up everytime i think about it.

  17. 17 rach September 18, 2007 at 1:37 pm

That review was all sarcasm. I love it. The sarcasm, not the movie.

H-E-L-L NOOOO!!!!!! I’M SO F-U-C-K-I-N-G EMBARRASSED!!!! (sorry for cursing so much) BUT WHYYYYY WHYYYY WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

IS THAT DIRECTOR OUT OF HIS MIND?! I WAS ALSO MAKING FUN OF THE MOVIE WHILE I WAS WATCHING IT BECAUSE IT WAS SO RIDICULOUS AND BEFORE I WENT TO SLEEP THAT NIGHT I BURST OUT INTO UNCONTROLLABLE LAUGHTER BECAUSE I WAS THINKING ABOUT HOW F*CKED UP THE WHOLE MOVIE WAS. IT WAS THE ONLY REASON WHY I SAW IT, BUT SOME PEOPLE IN THE AUDIENCE IN KOREA ACTUALLY THOUGHT IT WAS GOOD!!!! THE ENTIRE KOREAN MEDIA RAVES ABOUT HOW GOOD IT IS AND I HAD AN ARGUMENT WITH MY MOM (WHO DIDN’T SEE IT) BECAUSE SHE REFUSED TO BELIEVE IT WAS BAD AND SAID IT MUST BE SOOO GOOD AND THAT PEOPLE LIKE IT IN THE U.S. I’M LIKE…..”UH…NO. IT’S THE WORST MOVIE EVER.” KOREAN PEOPLE ARE SO BIASED AND BLIND!!!!!!! WHAT THE HELL. DON’T THEY THINK PEOPLE GO SEE IT BECAUSE IT’S SO BAD??? MONEY AND TICKETS ARE EVERYTHING TO KOREANS.

THAT SELFISH SH*THEAD!!!! THINK OF THE LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCES AND OUR KOREAN IMAGE!!!!!!! OH MY GOSH. THIS IS SO HUMILIATING!!!!!! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO US???? ARE YOU LIKE A NORTH KOREAN SENT BY KIM JONG ILL TO DISCREDIT KOREAN CINEMA AND CULTURE????? THANKS A LOT, YOU STUPID COMEDIAN. THE PROFESSOR WHO PASSED YOU IN FILM/WRITING CLASS IS A DUMBASS AS WELL!!!!
