Lee Jun Ki, best known as playing a homosexual harlequin, recently traveled to China and posted his sel-ca pictures up on his cyworld. Instead of taking beauteous pictures of himself in the great land of China, he chose to take some goofy and eccentric shots. It seems as if Jun Ki is trying to tell us that he’s just a normal guy who’s not really a gay clown or the memory loss gangster he played in the drama, Time of Wolf and Dog. One of the fan sites posted a video of him in China. At one point he is asked “Are you tired?” and “How is the food?” in english and he responds in english. His pronunciation is pretty terrible and he seemed self conscious about speaking the language. Could be that he was caught off guard. But I had expected his english to be better than that. I don’t quite understand why these rich Korean celebrities can’t get a private tutor to buckle down with them. It really makes me wonder by what method they are learning the little bit of english that they know.
Bae Yong Joon, on the other hand, has had a personal tutor for a few years and is said to be quite fluent and speaks with excellent pronunciation. So take THAT, PopSeoul. LOL…

I totally agree with Dumpling about Korean celebrities and their English. I don’t understand how can they possibly think their pronounciation/enunciation is anywhere near audible. I always cringe at any English version of their songs just because I find myself suddenly trying to understand a new language!
To be fair, the same goes on the contrary to the American Koreans who think they can fare a movie with three lines of Korean which even I, who’s hopeless at learning another language can perfect.
In general, it seems to be a phenomenon of learning a foreign language: the student always thinks they sound better than they really do. Naturally, no one has to be perfect. I don’t consider having a notable accent, for example, to be an issue. Accents are fine. They are cute in fact. But when the pronunciation is so completely wrong and they do nothing to correct it, can you even rightfully say they are speaking english? For example, if a Korean wants to say the word “very” and they repeatedly pronounce it “bery” can they REALLY think they are speaking english when “bery” is a totally different word and sound from “very”? I had an aquaintence in Korea who was American and I visited her when I was on vacation. She had been in Korea for 3 years as an english teacher and she actually believed she was “semi-fluent” in Korean. While it is true she could order food in a restaurant or ask for directions on the street the fact is her Korean was HORRIBLE. Her pronunciation, tonality and diction was utterly wrong. I know this without speaking Korean myself because I watch Korean movies and have for a few years, so I’m familiar with how the language should sound. Also, I would notice when she spoke to Koreans it would seem to take them a moment to process what she was saying before they replied. But this girl I knew had the nerve to criticize my pronunciation of a few Korean words that I had learned, “Why can’t you try to pronounce them like Koreans do?” Um, actually I LEARNED from a Korean before I went on vacation and more than one Korean told me my pronunciation was excellent. Moreover, Koreans love you even just for trying. But this is what I mean–non-native speakers of any language often think THEY sound great but will criticize others when they perceive a deficiency. I know a woman who teaches english in Japan and the single biggest problem she has is with her students allowing her to correct them. She can’t correct them to harshly, too firmly, or too repeatedly or they get offended. She struggles to find just the right balance of being gentle yet firm. And she has a super hard time with it because if she doesn’t push them they will not learn, yet if she pushes the wrong way they will get offended and STILL not learn. The only answer is that the person learning has to be brave and self-confident and apply themselves with total dedication, a big part of which is allowing themselves to be told “You are doing this wrong”. Gosh, this was a long comment, wasn’t it???
It’s difficult for Koreans to be very good in English because they have different sentence construction. I was a tutor and I tutored kids to teenagers. They were really having a difficult time. What more if they’re already adults. It’s difficult for their tongues. haha. But it’s true.
So, even if they have private tutors, it will still take them a long time to be fluent or even be very good.

I would think that he is just a normal adult who now and then indulges in the ‘child’ in him - ie. act goofy, putting up an act or dressing up for the camera, things one never do in the normal course of real life.
Especially as an artist (more imaginative and creative than some of us), he is probably trying out images to discover all the possible looks/persona he can take on should he ever be offered to act as in his future dramas or movies.
Even I would love to try on all available varieties of clothes, makeup, hairstyles if I have access to such things in my free time - just to see, maybe even admire, how I look in them.
