The Legend becomes a hit and Bae gets injured on the set

1030baeyongjoon.jpg

Despite my initial predictions that The Legend will flop, it became a national sensation, confirming Bae Yong Joon’s power to move the ajumma force. I couldn’t endure more than one episode of the drama, so I can’t give you an accurate critique or praise, but I can tell you that the special effects are as good as Lord of the Rings and that I was completely turned off when Bae played Korean Jesus in white locks. But if you like that sort of stuff, check it out and enlighten the rest of us on what the hype is all about.

But more importantly, Bae tore a ligament in his finger during a sword fight last week and it almost gave his ajumma fans a heart attack when the news broke out. Bae was told that he needed to wear a finger brace for about 4-5 weeks, but Bae politely ignored the doctor’s recommended recommendation and returned to the set. Get well soon Bae Yong Joon!

    To meLL

Don’t worry meLL, I think no BYJ fan likes the word “hate”.
Probably bec BYJ has given us positive influence on how we should live our lives. We respect your opinion as we respect others too. It will be a shame to BYJ if his fans will act beyond his standard and class. Just my 2 cents.

A good read. An excerpt from the Joynews 24 Feature Series ‘Star Prism’ in time for 3rd anniversary of its foundation on November 1 “Actor who has become a god, Bae Yongjoon!”

◆BYJ’s status, and road to move forward

Although there are opinions that there won’t be ‘the second BYJ’, we cannot let spirit of Hallyu, having been kept on with difficulty, to let down by itself despite of that, can we? From that perspective, it is certain that BYJ is fighting in the most front line of the Hallyu, although he might be condemned that he is fighting only for himself.

I would like to send hand clapping of encouragement to BYJ, who is maintaining himself well without breaking down in that difficult situation, embracing loneliness and mental suffering that others cannot feel. Although the Hallyu will not be bent down at once even if BYJ breaks down, let’s recognize that BYJ is the actor who represents the Hallyu. Also, it is good to give him strength so that he can exert further more power.

All the while, we heard news on and off that due to influence from BYJ, Korea’s international image and status changed. In the past, who has ever thought that one entertainer in a country could exert such a big influence. BYJ’s popularity did not stop at a personal glory but became a pride in our show business. In a moment when Hollywood stars and films are invading Asia, a fact that one of our Hallyu stars holds up big is a pretty secure and inspiring thing.

    dumpling,

no, it doesn’t matter. although it’s interesting to hear the views of koreans vs. non-koreans on korean topics. so do you love just koreans or asians? i like them asians myself but then again, i’m a bit biased cuz i’m asian! :)

  6. 6 Dumpling November 2, 2007 at 11:01 am

I love Asians, the Oriental ones specifically.

What makes me crazy about the “ajumma hating” is that in Korea even a woman in her early to late 30s is considered an “ajumma”. This is not only the same age group as Bae himself, but in the U.S. tons of actors AND actresses have fans in this age group and no one makes fun of them. I think the mentality about ajummas is a uniquely Korean perspective and it needs to go. No one else in the world thinks like this. No one. I love Korea and Korean culture but this obsession with breaking people down into age groups and then forcing them into age-related boxes is cruel, disrespectful and unreasonable.
    ======================================================

    nice one dumpling!

even in filipino fans also suffer from what can we call “ajumma discrimination”; i.e., you are deadmeat if you are a celebrity in 30s because they regard them as “laos” or phased-out celebrity in tagalog term, and you are even deadmeat and a butt of malicious name-callings if you are having fans falling under 30+ age bracket.

belittling of “ajummas” is absolutely irrational. how the friggin’ hell could you have the nerve to discriminate those in 30s to 50s? they are really powerful breed and not as rabid as teener fans. no offense, but having fans fall under 30-50 age group is far very flattering because these are working groups with knowledge about everything and not as naive as teeners do.

sorry lol, not meant to discriminate or name callings on you, but you are acknowledgeable because you’ve got a keen appreciation for male celebrities in their 30s!

  8. 8 lol November 2, 2007 at 11:53 pm

its not ‘male celebrities’ its just clebrity bec i only like yong joon oppa and yong joon oppa only! ;)

dumping…ahh, i love my asian men too. i use to date white guys but find them un-interesting and a bit 1-dimensional.

i’ve always thought BYJ is popular with the older ladies but after checking out some clips of this movie…i can see why the younger kids are worked up about him also. i realize that some of the younger girls find him sexually attractive but i can see how the other young’ins see him as a hero…like in x-men or spiderman.

just want to share something… there was this magazine, they made a survey… the survey is about YJ oppa’s fans,
the survey was to ask the korean fans and japanese fans what do they like about him…
    here is the result
    korean fans:manliness
    japanese fans: softness
    >>>
pls think it as like this the japanes fans are the ajummas and korean fans are the young ones…
    >
the point is yong joon oppa have these “two important characteristics, thats why he have fans in differnt ages…
    >
and pls put your situation in our ‘teenage fans place…
you wan to go to the airport to welcome him but you see thousand of ajjumas. you still go to the line and welcomed him…
but the other day the medea reported that he onlly have ajumma fans..
    what will u do?
of cos just hide and peek around…
but like what other said bae fans are talented try talking cahtting and peeking around them and you will be tmpted to join them after that you can t turn away ever…

i hope i can write a book report like this or else i think ill get a A+++++++…

Two weeks ago a fellow employee lent me the Winter Sonata dvd. Fell in love with it and had watched it over and over again until I decided to buy my own.

Am a Dong Gun avid fan but switching to Bae (sorry Popseoul) due to what I’ve observed recently when Dong Gun was interviewed by CNN as compared to Bae’s interview and bloopers included at this Winter’s.

The huge difference (for me) between the two : chivalry is dead to Dong gun while very much alive to Bae period ! The former didn’t even help the CNN lady interviewer get off the van! Reading all the goodness about him . . . I was definitely disappointed! Was it because he’s worried what his fans might think otherwise ? Or simply because he lacks it ? An “ajumma” (didn’t know the meaning ’til I read all this comments) like me scrutinize every little moves pertaining celebrities most especially the one I admired.

I admit Dong Gun is handsome and all but when you’re with a man who’ll make you feel every inch a lady I’ll prefer a lesser goodlooking guy who’ll make me feel as such ! And Bae (gay or not) to me will do justice to that category !

Hopefully “The Legend” will be shown here in my country otherwise will just wait for its dvd.

I am truly and immensely grateful/thankful, Popseoul, for your website. The comments give us so much information not to mention the hilariousness it has from time to time.

All I could say is everyone is entitled to each own opinion and Popseoul is no exception.

  13. 14 lol November 5, 2007 at 2:56 pm

    he is not a gay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
do you want me to write all girls that he dated and the ones who became his girlfriend?!?!?!
……….no, bae fans respect his privacy, sors…
just look in the net and youl find 2 celebgirl name
one director and other one was onece a love theme…
    period. :x

I’m a white, blond, hazel-eyed biker chick. I’m one of BYJ’s fans from the USA – there happens to be thousands of us here.

I’ve mentioned the credibility thing before, and I’ll do it again – once you’ve lost that, it’s almost impossible to get it back.

This blog, if done right, could be your livelihood – but not if you don’t have credibility as a writer. Sniping at the heels of your betters is not a very smart way to go about it.

I never was a fan of Bae, and haven’t seen any of his other dramas. Wait, I did watch a bit of “Winter Sonata”..which I thought was good, but not good enough for me to watch all the episodes. So far, I think “The Legend” is at least very entertaining, and educational(it is very loosely based on national myth). It’s true that Bae is portrayed as a bit of oddity in media, and it seems like he is even being compared to MJ. I don’t think Bae deserves such comparison…it’s not Bae’s fault that some Japanese ajumma are over the top Bae-manias. Besides, I haven’t heard any plastic surgery or unusual friendship with minors in Bae’s camp. So those of you who wants to make half-assed comparisons, please find more constructive use of your times..maybe take time to watch “The Legend” before you declare it a “Flop” ;>

  18. 19 arianx January 7, 2008 at 3:52 pm

    yuor sooo……………. cute.

  19. 21 spellingbee February 6, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Finished watching the drama in a matter of days.

TWSSG is the best for historical/period dramas alongside Dae Jang Geum and JuMong. Great enough to make me into a new period drama fan. I agree it reminds me alot of LOTR one of my all time favourite movie. The whole white Gandalf look for BYJ only last for an eppy. His main character will outshine in the latter parts.

my only disappointment will be the lack of spaces for love stories in this drama to keep the audience in romance mode other than all the battle scenes but if the rumours true that there WILL be a sequel, I’m sure they’ll focus more on the unfulfilled love.

great great great series…. i just finished watching this one and yeah, the ending left me a little dejected but after reading the posted “”supposed-to-be”" ending, my what ifs were erased…

anyway, i couldnt think of anybody else acting as Great Gwanggaeto…

im not really a Bae Yong Jun fan but i loved him here…
