Two days after the 2007 Mnet KM Music Festival, the truths behind the glamour are surfacing, angering not only the singers but also the fans. So what really happened at MKMF?
M (Lee Minwoo) left one hour before to show time
M abruptly went home one hour before show time because he believed that the results of MKMF were rigged. M’s rep asked Mnet to explain why TSZX the Grace were the winners of the Best Dance Music Award when M received greater number of online votes.
Mnet explained that internet polls count only 20% in determining the final winners - other criteria used were professional judges (20%), research (30%), record sales (10%) and digital charts (10%). Therefore, even if M received the most amount of online votes, he could have lost on other aspects.
However, M did not buy Mnet’s explanation and left the stadium angry and bitter.
Shin Hye Sung refused to attend MKMF
Ballad prince Shin Hye Sung’s absence wasn’t as dramatic as M’s, but he released an official statement today stating that he also cannot accept the results of the MKMF.
I understand that Mnet’s evaluation criteria is under a lot of criticisms, especially because they are unwilling to reveal the specifics of other criteria, but this mess could have been avoided if the winners were actually announced at the event. Next time, Mnet should seal and guard the results in Mnet vault until show time.
JYP, M & Fly to the Sky’s special performance cancelled
JYP planned a huge comeback stage with hoobaes, M and Fly to the Sky, but that evaporated when M decided to go home. M was suppose to sing JYP’s hit song “She was Pretty” and Fly to the Sky “Don’t leave me.” Dang! That would have been an awesome performance. Too bad that we all had to miss it.
Anyband special performance abandoned
Another hyped up yet totally unnecessary band, Anyband was suppose to perform, but due to DBSK’s busy schedule and weather conditions, it got cancelled. This really pissed off Jumping BoAs and Cassiopeias who paraded to the stadium to see their idols.
In addition to these cancellations, many are upset about the awards. Based on the record sales, SG Wanna be deserved the Album of the Year award, not Epik High. There were 34 awards but not all of them were announced, in fact some were merged into one making everyone question the validity of the awards.
Finally, due to all these cancellations, the hyped up event ended prematurely, leaving a bad taste in everyone’s mouth, except of course the Elves and Super Junior.

It was a bit disappointing though. Nobody really takes MKMF seriously, but there were some performances that it was a shame to miss. I feel bad for all the DBSK and BoA fans.

i feel rather proud for lee minwoo and shin hyesung, for not attending cause they doubted the credibility of the award show.

Some of the awards actually were supposed to be decided 100% by online votes. The “Auction Netizen Popularity Award” was an award that was supposed to be decided by online votes (which is why it was called the Netizen award). When the voting closed, Shin Hyesung was in first place, Kim Dongwan in second, and Super Junior in third. But Super Junior won the award.
Also, there were mysteries about the “Auction Style Award.” When that voting closed, Lee Minwoo was in first place. But then they didn’t give that award to anyone. (There were a total of 10 awards that were never given to anyone, even though the show ended 30 minutes early).
Some have tried to explain the above awards by saying that artists who didn’t attend had their awards shifted to someone else. But that’s clearly not true since Shinhwa won the Overseas popularity award and Ivy won Best Female Artist, even though neither group was there.
I have nothing against the people that won, but MKMF really did some screwy things that don’t make sense.

I wouldn’t say that Super Junior was particularly celebratory at the awards. I mean, this is a group of boys who cry/spazz at the drop of the hat and yet they were at their most stoic for the entire event. They were clearly just as uncomfortable as everyone else.

Is the MKMF equavilent to the American Music Award? It seems more like the Teen Choice Award which is a joke. With all the “A-List” artists, it seemed to be more prestige or should be.
I’m disappointed with this year MKMF. I love Super Junior. They’re entertaining and SuJu KRY are brilliant singers. But Super Junior got Artist of the Year? A Daesang award? They’ve only been debuted for ONE year. Even DBSK didn’t get a Daesang until two years after their debut, and that’s when they had sky rocket popularity all over Asia and Europe. It took Bi Rain around three. Shinhwa took seven. Does SM control M-Net or what?
Although I go agree Super Junior deserved all their Popularity awards. And MKMF did justice to Big Bang and FT Island. I think SG Wannabe should have bagged more. Shin Hyesung too.

M (or his agency, Open World Entertainment) said it himself that his aim is not an award. As a singer for 10 years, he knows better than that. However, what he could not accept is the fact that MKMF could not give him satisfying answer when he asked about the credibility of the award. M has sold more than TSZX. He is active in Korea, while for TSZX, only Stephanie active in several variety shows. As for talent.. Do we even have to question M’s talent? He is like one of the best dancer in Korea, he writes his own song, and his live is still listen-able (is that even a word? lol). I’m not saying that TSZX is not talented.. I love TSZX, I also love their dance and some of their music. But all I’m saying is that M did the right thing by pulling out when MKMF didn’t show fairness in this award. Even, M is still showing his professionalism by asking JYP whether he wanted M to stay or not.. It turned out, JYP understood M’s situation, and let him leave. (It should mean something, since JYP even supported his decision).
As for Shin Hye Sung, he never stated that he would attend the award in the first place. GoodEMG has released statement for Shin Hye Sung’s absence:
“Initially, though we were nominated for five awards including Best Male Singer and Best Ballad, MKMF organizers did not send out official invitations to us, thus we couldn’t announce any notice of participation in the MKMF awards ceremony. The reports, which said that Shin Hyesung wanted to sabotage the event by only announcing his non-participation one hour before the event, are totally untrue. This we need to let everyone know.”
I never thought that MNet was quite legit in the first place…but yea I have no idea how CSJH received best dance group? O.o they don’t even dance that much.

Really I loved Suju, but SM disappointed me! Super Junior doesn’t deserve the award for Daesang. Big Bang or SG deserve it more. I bet that SM gave money to Mnet. That’s just not fair because other worked really hard, and they have their own style.Big Bang have their own hip hop style. Epik have their rapping style. SG sing their own ballad song. Suju just change their style time to time. From the cute guys to the gangster and then being the 30 years old guys who are gonna get marry. And they can’t really sing. this is not the first award for him.. shinhwa won 17 (SEVENTEEN) awards in 2004 from various award shows and minwoo himself had won ‘best dance’ from MKMF in 2005.. why would he get upset over just another MKMF award?? he would not gain anything with that award nor would he lose anything without that award…
and remember he has more to lose now.. he’s just an artist from a small new company who’s going to the army next year and wouldn’t be in music industry for the next 2 years.. while mnet is a large company with a lot of money that has a fair amount of control of what’s going on in korean music industry.. the only thing mnet might lose is credibility, but people have been asking its credibility since a few years ago, and mnet is doing just fine..
minwoo is someone who values professionalism and respectfulness the most, he won’t risk all that over one or two awards from a company that doesn’t have much credibility anyway.. he HAD to do what he did coz if he didn’t, no one would and mnet (or even korean music industry) would still be corrupted years after years.. he just had to be the first one to step up, risking all he has now..

i love TSZX, but honestly, how much promotion have they done for their album, in KOREA?! in so many ways, this does not make sense- whether its album sales, promotion, skills, etc. of the group, it is only stephanie that excels in dance. he writes his own songs!! his third album is over 50% all his work whether its management or song writing! really, how does TSZX win best dance music award?

Yes, Minwoo was unprofessional bailing out last minute. If he had a problem with mnet/mkmf why wait last minute he should have turned down there invitation from the beginning. I get that mnet/mkmf has screwed him over but SCREW MKMF .n. just continue on with what was plan for his fans not for mnet/mkmf.

Minwoo was not unprofessionable, I believe. He had his own reasons, leave it at that. Personally, MKMF is a popularity award show, they know SM and their artists are popular, give them the awards, and bang! 70-80% of the people in the stadium are happy. Its business, peoples, no one in Korea takes quality music seriously anymore, c’mon at least over half of the entertainment industry is pop music by groups of pretty boys. Face it, groups like SG Wannabe aren’t that popular cuz’ why? Cuz’ Korea’s population is screaming girls who are obsessed over boys who are prettier than they are. There should be: DBSK, BoA, FTTS, Shinhwa, Hyori, Ivy, Big Bang, SG Wannabe, Epik High, Super Junior Wonder Girls(their song Tell Me is a hit song this year), not sure about Cheon Sang Ji Hee. Yeah,, and the Daesang should be given to Big Bang or Wonder Girls because they made the hit songs through out the whole year. No one can deny it. DBSK, they may not get an award but they are the special guests and BoA also. FTTS got a nice song, My Angel. Super Junior, I think they should’ve been get the Best new Boyband award. Because they’ve only have been debutted for 2 year and didn’t have any concert with only 2 albums.

@ blinkable: Actually, MKMF is pretty noted for NOT giving Shinhwa awards. The most notable award was in 2002 for Best Male Group when they were still under SM. Even in 2004 when they won two Daesangs for the 7th album, M.Net didn’t even nominate them for one. Last year when they were nominated for four Daesangs for their 8th album by all the major award shows (KBS Gayo, Golden Disk Awards, SBS Gayo Ceremony, Seoul Gayo Daesang), they STILL weren’t nominated by MKMF.
They have however won the Overseas Viewer awards and that can’t be taken away from Shinhwa because it’s fan voted. If you notice though, no one from Shinhwa came to accept it. Why? My guess is that they’re beyond awards at this point after 10 years in the business.
As for Minwoo, when he asked for clarification, M.Net was unable to answer his queries. Actually, the production staff that were on hand at the award site were unable to do so. And thus his COMPANY decided to pull him out to protect his integrity as an artist. Here’s the bottom line. He worked hard on his album: producing, writing, singing. If the people at M.Net are not gonna be straight up with him, acknowledge him and give him his due, then why should he hafta perform for them? He’s not their monkey. To perform in their show would be to advocate the injustice. So after discussing it with JYP, he decides to walk away. Not bitter, not in a huff, but with pride intact.
As for the fans, both Minwoo’s and Hyesung’s companies have apologized to the fans profusely cause really, they’re the ones that are hurt the most. If so called fans can’t accept the apology, then oh well….

i don’t think minwoo or hyesung really wanted to attend that whole fiasco of a ceremony anyway - they probably know better how it works. and honestly, whatever they say about the judging criteria, if minwoo was already leading for the online poll, album sales and the digital chart, that already makes up 50% of the total score. he must have scored REALLY bad with the “professional judges panel” and the “producers panel” to have lost that. geez.
and don’t even get me started on the Popularity Award. isn’t that decided purely by online votes? didn’t hyesung win that poll? tsk.

I hate it how people keep saying M was so unprofessional in not performing. Everyone here agrees that MKMF is so effing rigged it’s not even funny anymore. So why would you even want to attend it in the first place if you’re an artist? Also, if you were only going to attend just to perform, wouldn’t you want an explanation for those lost awards THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE WON. Just admit the fact that how the heck could TSJH win that dance award when they barely promoted in Korea and also that Auction Style Award which was cut. M didn’t get the explanation that he should have received. I bet you if MKMF had a decent excuse M wouldn’t have left. But they didn’t.
People say that he left just before without saying anything to anyone in a huff. He talked it over with JYP. It wasn’t a friggin hissy fit. He DISCUSSED it with JYP and JYP said he didn’t mind. If M did go he was only going to be there for that performance anyway and even JYP said it was okay.
Someone said TSJH dances better than M. I’m not even gonna comment on that other than the fact that you haven’t really seen M dance.
Seriously it’s not just Minwoo. Artists don’t deserve this kinda crap. It’s time someone stood up. M doesn’t have anything to lose because he has a legion of fans behind him, talent and the ability and same with Hyesung. I’m glad they had the backbone to finally show that MKMF is a poor excuse for a show and it’s festival that should stop acting like it’s actually decent and just become a music festival without awards. Miun-Actually, I don’t think there’s much difference between CSJH and See Ya’s live performances and I don’t think both of them have very many songs i’ve liked. CSJH is more attractive so i’ll give them the edge, both are similar in the sense that they have untapped potential.
And why even put Big Mama on the same group? It’s pretty obvious they are above and beyond almost everybody in the talent field.
Also, the way you talk about CSJH makes you come off like a retarded anti who lacks the ability to separate reality from your ranting. How do you expect people to take what you say as anything but a joke?
Anyway, Min Woo missed out on the biggest part, it’s not about him or whether a dumbass explanation was sufficient. It’s about being a professional and performing for your FANS (because it’s about your FANS) not your ego. You can complain all you want after or before you perform but you should still perform.
