Kim Tae-hee breaks into a sweat for foreign laborers

20071206_kimtaehee15

With the reported 1 million or so foreign laborers in Korea working stressful and dangerous jobs, Kim Tae-hee shows that she has a big heart by volunteering to feed a token few for an hour or so. Just so you know, dishing out bean sprouts can be very laborious.

Kim Tae-hee and her horse-teeth, representing domestic credit card company BC Card, served the standard Korean fare on December 06, 2007 in Guro. You would think that the organizers would be more thoughtful by preparing non-Korean dishes. Oh well. as the saying goes, beggars cannot be choosers.

Watch a short clip here.

  2. 2 blasphemy December 10, 2007 at 2:26 am

just a photo opp as usual for korean celebrities.. hahaha big deal? nah…. anyway, looks like cheap food…

  3. 3 yetaz December 10, 2007 at 2:30 am

    gorgeous as always.

  4. 4 Cutie December 10, 2007 at 2:34 am

Meh, who cares if a celebrity is volunteering. Sometimes, because theres a celeb, more people come and help. I’m sure if there was a celeb who didnt do anything, people would say, “OMG- that perspon is ‘bad’… he/she never volunteers for anything, etc etc.”

  5. 5 toocutedoggy December 10, 2007 at 2:35 am

    that’s nice

  6. 6 Star December 10, 2007 at 2:41 am

Its as if people are so selfish. If a regular person sits home all day nobody would really care but if a celebrity doesnt then some people would make a big deal out of it. But being volunteers is a good thing.

Kim Taehee is pretty like always..

May the DNA of Kim be duplicated in other countries. Thank you, Kim…

  11. 11 jimmy popp December 10, 2007 at 4:57 am

Foreign laborers as beggars who don’t get to choose? You must be a prick.

  12. 12 jinra December 10, 2007 at 5:04 am

The person that wrote this article must be a prick, for sure. You think it’s easy living in a foreign country for the pursuit of a better life because it’s just not possible in your mother country? Goddamn.

  13. 13 Musicisourhigh December 10, 2007 at 5:04 am

I figure even if it is a photo opportunity it is still a pair of hands helping and that makes a difference

  14. 14 coldfeetwarmheart December 10, 2007 at 5:07 am

“Beggars cannot be choosers” how can you say that? Just because they are foreign laborers does not mean they are beggars…. I am so disappointed seeing comments like these….

  15. 15 jen December 10, 2007 at 5:08 am

Wow popseoul your probably the most critical and cynaical person I’ve encountered on the net.

  16. 16 yellowdaisy December 10, 2007 at 5:51 am

Foreign laborers are beggars? You are such a MEANIE, worse than the Christmas grinch! They choose to work in foreign lands, even working on stressful and dangerous jobs, because of their desire to earn a decent living. THEY ARE NOT BEGGARS. THEY ARE HUMAN BEINGS, just like you and me, perhaps even better than most of us because inspite of difficult personal circumstances, they still persevere. Making fun of celebrities is one thing but to step on people just because they are economically disadvantaged is something else. If I were a foreign laborer there and I heard what you said, I wouldn’t be able to eat even a morsel of your free Korean food. Popseoul, that is an undeserved blow below the belt!

  17. 17 Stephaine December 10, 2007 at 5:53 am

i dont think she has a horse nose, she is very kind and pretty

  18. 18 cosmicolor December 10, 2007 at 6:19 am

    Beggars? Really now.

  19. 19 Lana December 10, 2007 at 6:20 am

volunteer and try and change your image all you want, Kim Taehee. It won’t work. Nice try, though.

It all just looks so very forced.

  20. 20 laars December 10, 2007 at 6:32 am

I never thought I would come to the defense of popseoul. As mean-spirited as their comments can sometimes seem, I don’t think that was their intent here…”beggars can’t be choosy” is a very common American phrase that is applied to rich and poor alike and simply means that those who are given a gift shouldn’t complain about the lack of choice. I also doubt any of those receiving the free meal were complaining. I’d have eaten bugs and dirt if it had been served up by Kim Tae Hee! LOL
She should be applauded for donating her time whatever her motives may have been

  21. 21 preciousme December 10, 2007 at 6:45 am

I think she’s sincere want to be volunteer and give food to the workers.. We don’t know what she’s thinking.. Maybe she feel pity for the workers… it’s a dangerous work you know…

  22. 22 rocketfuel December 10, 2007 at 7:00 am

    eh….

“beggars can’t be choosy” is a poor analogy in taste considering the seriousness of problems foreigners face in Korea, like lack of security and health care.

    bad form.

  23. 23 rocketfuel December 10, 2007 at 7:06 am

    - preciousme

what Kim Tae Hee presence gives is awareness to whatever cause this free meal provides. It’s the same thing as those Korean baby adoption photo gallery. It’s not really about being sincere, it’s about being seen…but if she said anything about the problems foreigners face, then you can judge if she’s sincere.

  24. 24 yellowdaisy December 10, 2007 at 7:06 am

I live in the US too so I know that such phrase may mean gift recipients can’t be choosers, such as in the context of gift giving between and among friends, colleagues and family. However, when it said carelessly and without a thought of the sensibilities of others (as is the case here) it can rub people the wrong way. As you may be aware, in the US, political correctness is demanded, especially those from writers and broadcasters.

  25. 25 yellowdaisy December 10, 2007 at 7:11 am

I meant … especially from writers and broadcasters.

  26. 26 rofl December 10, 2007 at 7:12 am

lol, well it’s kinda stupid to be in korea and NOT be offered korean food. O_o?

  27. 27 Dumpling December 10, 2007 at 8:09 am

LOL, she really does have horse teeth.

  28. 28 angry annie December 10, 2007 at 8:29 am

    wow, hold your tongue horsey…
I always like your witty comment, your words are so refreshing just as fresh as a peppermint in a clog toilet, a fresh wind in a stinky shark mouth, for some reason I see the funny side or you (who ever wrote all the nasty crazy comments )

But this time I agreed that you cross that line dude, saying something about the foreign labour is the same thing like racism. and you are the biggest blop for saying what you said. and since you have a special asian bceleb blog that makes me predict that you are asian yourself and you might not live in your mother land, so if I’m right than you eat your own words Beggar!!!

  29. 29 for real December 10, 2007 at 8:35 am

good, she should do this more often

  30. 30 calla December 10, 2007 at 9:09 am

    Popseoul,

Shame on you for using “beggars cannot be choosers” analogy loosely. Not on this situation, buddy. You’d hit a sore spot,no doubt. Foreign laborers are decent people who opted to leave their families behind to earn a better living and provide a more comfortable life for them. They work their a.. out, I tell you. It just doesn’t sit well for any of them to be labeled “beggars”, even if it’s only a “phrase”.

    It’s just mean.

  31. 31 rocketfuel December 10, 2007 at 9:20 am

    It’s more ignorant than mean…

  32. 32 joyce December 10, 2007 at 9:45 am

i dont see what’s wrong with the phrase beggars cant be choosers..
popseoul just meant that they couldnt/wouldnt complain about the food given to them because it was free
    gee did you even read:
You would think that the organizers would be more thoughtful by preparing non-Korean dishes. Oh well. as the saying goes, beggars cannot be choosers.

and yes i know how a foreign laborer feels..
my father was one of them

  33. 33 YooYoo December 10, 2007 at 9:46 am

bwuhaha.. It looks like they feed them with only Kimchi (side dishes) & steamed rice, where’s the Korean Bbq. lol

  34. 34 Kitty December 10, 2007 at 10:08 am

Popseoul isn’t calling foreign laborers “Beggars” - she’s simply saying, “Hey, it’s a free meal - why complain?” I wouldn’t complain about free food either. “Beggars can’t be choosers” means if you’re given a gift, there’s no need to complain or be picky about it; be appreciative of what you were given. It’s a common American saying. For example, if I were given tickets to a concert for free, but they were in the nosebleed area and I complained, someone would tell me “Beggars can’t be choosers.” Meaning: Hey, they were free; don’t complain.

And damn, Kim Tae Hee was beaten by the beautiful stick many times. She’s gorgeous.

  35. 35 .... December 10, 2007 at 10:13 am

if someone pretty like kim tae hee has a horse teeth.. i wonder how’s YOUR teeth, popseoul.
and of course, your tongue is also ‘ugly’.

  36. 36 ed December 10, 2007 at 10:17 am

a free meal is def better than a screening pass to her movies. viva taehee!

  37. 37 parkerlewis December 10, 2007 at 10:17 am

her teeth are pretty big though. she’s still beautiful.

if she sharpened her teeth she could look like baraka from mortal kombat 2

  38. 38 Thuy December 10, 2007 at 10:54 am

Yah… I’m getting more and more disappointed in Popseoul… Your words are getting harsher everytime I come on your blog and you don’t seen to realise the true meaning of what you’re saying… Kim Tae Hee has horse teeth? Using the analogy that foreign labourers are beggars? That’s just so mean…

  39. 39 popkorea December 10, 2007 at 11:17 am

lol at people who are saying how “*#%^&” popseoul is. when did you people get all sensitive? as much as i don’t like some of her posts, isn’t that what you expect to read in her blog?

  40. 40 monalisa December 10, 2007 at 11:20 am

It’s so altruistic of Ms. Kim since it must be freezing out there. Keep up the good work!

  41. 41 cm December 10, 2007 at 11:31 am

The fact of the matter is, even if “beggars can’t be choosers” is an idiom in the English language, the fact that Popseoul chose those words creates a correlation between the idiom and the foreign laborers they’re referring to. Yeah, it’s just their blog (so you don’t have to tell me “then don’t read it”) but as writers of “news” in a public forum, you have SOME responsibility for your words and your innuendos. If you don’t mean to draw the analogy, then you’ve made a horribly poor choice of words. If you did mean to draw the comparison, for shame.

  42. 42 Kitty December 10, 2007 at 11:46 am

^ I think that’s being hypersensitive and over-analytical. People are just looking into it too deep. The line before it even contradicts the notions people are getting that Popseoul is not sensitive to the foreign laborers.

Popseoul said that they should have been more sensitive to them by preparing dishes from their homeland. The “beggars can’t be choosers” part was not related to some kind of metaphor about the laborers being beggars, but rather her last suggestion in saying that there should have been meals prepared for the laborers from their home countries. As in “As much as that would have been nice, it’s fortunate that they are still getting fed a nice, free meal.”

  43. 43 Kitty December 10, 2007 at 11:51 am

“Yeah, it’s just their blog (so you don’t have to tell me “then don’t read it”) but as writers of “news” in a public forum, you have SOME responsibility for your words and your innuendos.”

BTW, since when has Popseoul been the newspaper? You want PC news, go read the Chosun Ilbo. She’s a GOSSIP blog. What are you expecting? Besides, what she said was hardly even close to being insensitive. The saying wasn’t referring to the desires of the foreign laborers, but rather her own suggestion that they should be fed their domestic meals.

I honestly believe people just like coming on here to be offended and will sift through each post finding something to get their panties in a wad over.

This post was about KTH scooping bean sprouts, not a political debate on foreign workers.

  44. 44 xxxxx December 10, 2007 at 12:03 pm

Yes this time u are suppose to be more sensitive about the word u r choosing..It is perhaps just an idiom but still it rub the people in a wrong way..im not saying that u r mean..ignorant???yeah probably…u r..
