Rest in peace Choi Yo Sam…

Choiyosam_200801

Grieving families and friends attended boxer Choi Yo Sam’s (33) funeral today after his family took him off life support on Thursday. Choi suffered from brain hemorrhage during a fight with Indonesian challenger Heri Amol at World Boxing Organization Intercontinental Flyweight Title on Christmas day and he was declared brain dead on Wednesday, January 2nd. Although Choi Yo Sam won the fight, on an unanimous decision, Amol dominated the 12th round with a right to Choi’s jaw sending him down seconds before the final bell.

Choi’s organs were donated to six people in need and over 15,000 mourning fans visited his cyworld page to express their grief and sadness. Choi’s death is not only tragic, it’s also eerily reminiscent of Kim Duk Koo’s death after sustaining injuries in a fight against US boxer Ray Mancini in 1982. Our condolences to his fans and family.

Rest in peace Choi Yo Sam…

Boxing is just the stupidest f*cking sport. For the life of me I don’t understand why people do it–or worse, why people WATCH it.

    RIP Choi Yo Sam.

(People choose boxing because they’re good at fighting, or like to fight, and it’s the safest, legal way to fight.)

That is disheartening to read despite that I’m not a fan of boxing. But I do think it a form of martial arts that can be respected, and I think it’d be respectful to him to remember him as a fighter and a person who had striven and trained to be good at it.

As dangerous as it might seem, boxing isn’t is as dangerous as gymnastics, skating or cheerleading.

    RIP~

  31. 31 dwilliams January 5, 2008 at 5:38 pm

    Annie
Boxing will never be banned as humanity as a whole is agressive and violent. Also as tragic as it is, I’ve read quite a few articles about soccer players dying on the field, one prominent player at the end of last year. So may Choi’s spirit rest in peace. Maybe one should evaluate better ways to protect fighters.

I’ve never heard of him since I’m not much into sports. But just seeing that hospital photo of him with all the wires and tubes just broke my heart. Although it is unfortunate, he did pass away doing what he was passionate about: boxing. …Any sport has its dangers… From my research, even professional dancers get heart attacks when they dance the intense flamenco. And that’s not even a sport! But I digress… Peace be with him and all of his loved ones. He truly was a fighter.

there’s so many death news going on recently and most of the situations have been based with crazed fans and rumors started by crazed fans who are obssessed but this story was actually something that was a family’s decision and I send my condolences to the family because they had no other choice why do people leave this place so young

  44. 44 Big A January 6, 2008 at 6:41 pm

OMG, why would the family permit that photo of him on the hospital bed with all those wires to be released?! Its just so sad. You dont hear about sudden boxing deaths often at all in the news….moreso about sports writers commenting on a veteran boxer’s increasingly slurred speech due to all the blows to the head after numerous fights…and how they shouldn’t step back into the ring.

I feel sorry for his family. RIP

The day after new Year’s…Well, he gave a new life to 6 people for a new year - there can’t be too many more noble ways to go.

  51. 51 MissBubbles January 7, 2008 at 7:42 pm

That picture of him in the hospital should be taken down. Shame on you popseoul! You could have at least warned about the hospital picture. I hate seeing stuff like that and it’s horrible that you don’t feel the same.

Rest in perpetual peace Choi Yo Sam. you will be missed. your death was not in vain and it will save many lives from here on.

that being said, i get the principles and assumptions that boxing is a legal sport and that both men chose to fight for a career. however, heri amol still killed a man, so for that i hope he burns in hell. Same with Ray Mancini.

this “sport” is monstrous and inhumane.

  54. 54 JT July 25, 2008 at 3:32 am

He went out like a true SANAI!!!
    Rest in peace Warrior!
