Big Bang’s shaky Japan adventure

Bigbang_200801

Big Bang released their first Japanese mini album titled “For the World” on Friday, despite the heated controversy around their latest single “Fool.” According to Korean Netizen Investigators, Big Bang’s “Fool” was a direct rip off from Japanese band Daishi Dance’s “Piano” but master YG doesn’t care because they are not “real” music critics.

And master YG doesn’t seem to care that much about the Japanese teens either. Big Bang’s first Japanese mini album was recorded entirely in English, not Japanese. But he did change names of three members to make it easier to pronounce. In Japan Taeyang will be SOL, Dae Sung, D-Lite and Seung Ri, VI (VICTORY). G-Dragon and Top will maintain their generic stage names.

Master YG’s strategy for Big Bang is an improvement from Se7en’s still pending US debut where all he did was brag about the producers he met, but Big Bang’s entry into Japan doesn’t sound too promising either, especially because the BB boys frequent the hospital and plagiarize without shame. Anyhow, good luck in Japan boys!

Yoshi -> “Wow. I can’t even believe the amount of morons there are on this thread who clearly have NO idea what they’re talking about….the majority of mainstream Japanese youth do NOT like/listen to JRock and LOVE hip hop/rap.”

    excuse me?
have you even taken a look at the music culture?
how dare you call people brainless morons when you yourself have NO idea what you’re spitting out.
you’ll find that hip hop and rap are stated as underground. its the older generation [20s] that like that.
however the ones with the more power ‘jap youth’ are into Jrock and pop.

u two wow its a matter of option and stuff no need to get fussed over it…
and yoshi u have no right to say what japanese people like and not like kay?
wome people love hip hop and stuff…….

    @Kathy C.

I don’t know your family but Seungri and Big Bang met black people before such as working with Chris Brown’s Choreographers and having Missy Elliot’s dancer in their videos. Hell they met Ciara!

If they want to be international stars, they need to move beyond the imagery.

whoa…it took me almost an hour 2 finish reading all dis comments…sum of de comments made me laugh while sum of de comments reali pissed me off…
i’m gonna say out my true feelings rite now…
i dun care whether i’ll get killed by Dbsk or SuJu’s fans…

1)i dun like dis mv same wit most of u bcos of de skimpy
dressed gurlz n de alcoholic drinks…
2)i agreed wit RandomPerson…i luv de song ‘this love’…
same like RandomPerson,i’m a Maroon 5 fan too but i like
GD’s version better than de original version…
3)i agreed wit RandomPerson too dat we can’t compare DBSK n
BB cos they’r 2 different groups wit 2 different concepts
    in completely different companies…
    4)jjiyul♥,i can see dat u r a HUGE DBSK fan…hahaha…
jz like wat BB Lover had said earlier,”both rapping or
singing while dancing are hard…sumtimes dbsk r off pitch
    n they r popular bcos they r pretty boys”…

i’m an ex-DBSK fan but i hv 2 agree wit wat BB Lover say..
Dbsk sang off pitch several times during live performances
n they lip sync numerous times…it made me quite
disappointed…i jz watch their performance a few weeks
ago on KBS World…i forgot de name of de show but it’s a
China-Korea concert…i can be 90% sure dat Dbsk was lip
syncing although they had sung de song maybe more than 50
    times…
de purpose of a concert is 2 see our idol n listen 2 them sing live, not 2 jz look at them lip-syncing…i rather buy an album n listen it at home then go 2 a concert n listen 2 them lip sync…meanwhile BB always sang live n onli lip sync once when they dance 2 another singer’s song…they even announce it b4 de performance…dat’s wat makes me luv BB more…
DBSK is well known 4 their good looks,so u can say their looks affect a portion of their popularity…meanwhile,YG company emphasizes on de singers’ talents n not looks…
last but not least,i was gettin tired n bored wit DBSK’s songs cos sum of their love songs r too slow while their fast songs r mostly noisy…it gives me headache…

This video was the last draw for me. I never liked Big Bang in the first place but I never bashed them. But when your style of music is emulating American hip-hop culture, your goal shouldn’t be mocking the very people who have created it. Black sitcoms, Ghetto-G rap, you feel me dawg? This group is a joke. Debut in America? Give me a break. If mainstream America had even knowledge that this video was out, they would lambaste and laugh at this facade of a group. If you’re going to debut in Japan, sing songs in Japanese or better yet stick to Korean. There’s no sense to release a Japanese album with English lyrics with the target audience being teenagers. To add to this the Japanese speak worse English then Koreans, how is even a remote small fraction going to comprehend what they are saying. They might’ve well as released that pos album in the states. Oh that’s right, I think they might’ve been aware of criticism they could’ve received. Has anyone seen Jpop singers try to sing in English? It’s incomprehensible, but look at one Japanese artist’s who have debuted worldwide. Dir en Grey from Japan in particular, dominated the charts in America and Europe without singing a WORD of English. How you say? Did they get tons of plastic surgery? Did they practice tons of dance choreographies? NOPE. They can transcend the language barrier because their music has heart, soul and artistic merit. You can tell their sweat and blood went into the music they created, just from their intense live stage presence alone. With the exception of Seo Taiji, I can almost guarantee NO K-pop singer will debut successfully beyond Asia anytime soon just due to the fact the majority of Korean music is years behind of their western counterparts. Sorry Rain/Se7en won’t cut it; I’m just waiting to see the reaction from people when they crash and burn. The age of boy bands is dead yet it’s still breathing in Korea, China, Japan and Thailand. It’s just a matter of time before they get sick of it. Some posters here claim that the real target audience is the underground, PLEASE OPEN YOUR EYES, as if these people have any actual knowledge of underground K-rap. I’m actually willing to let this slide because the majority of Big Bang fans are prepubescent girls but Big Bang doesn’t come close to authentic Hip-Hop. I.E Mc sniper, Outsider, Drunken tiger, T, Room 9, S.skunk, Luk2,Ness, TD, Kai, MCBK, and so on, are the true underground rappers. (This opinion is coming from a gyopo who’s been listening to rap in the States since N.W.A)They actually perform live at gigs, with people screaming, dancing to the music. Unlike the sit in a lawn chair, wave a balloon at the cookie cutter plastic faced groups Music Bank/Core crap. It makes me sad to say these hacks are associated with Seo Taiji because of the YG connection. I use to have respect for YG when they use promote artists like Masta Wu and Big Mama, but now it’s all gone down hill with Big bang. Anyone watch the Seo Taiji tribute concert? The worst performance there was Big Bang. True Seo taiji fans my ass! All they did was DANCE because they couldn’t compete with the other performances. Vanilla unity, Transfixion, Nell, Pia, Nuts etc dominated the show. True rock bands paying tribute to the real essence of Seo Taiji’s music. It’s heartbreaking to say the real artist’s in Korea sit in the sidelines with no publicity and airplay. Underground rappers mentioned above and rock bands that won’t be given the time of day. Judain, Rux, Rocket Diary, Skunk rocks crew,YB, Bay, Crying Nut, Lazybone, Deli Spice, Sprinkler, Dear Cloud, Mary Story, Emoticon, Eve, Jaurim, My Aunt Mary, Vanilla Unity, I can go on and on. Fortunately some of these artists are being heard today and there seems to be some movement towards saving the integrity of the Korean music industry, as more and more underground bands are popping up in the scene. Maybe one day the K-industry giants will wake up and stop manufacturing these groups and start promoting alternative music to pop and ballads which all sound the same.( not trashing all K music, as even I a rocker still likes to calm his heart with Soothing ballads from Lee Soo Young,) But in closing. I got to say WAKE THE $%^# UP PEOPLE

  5. 6 michelle January 10, 2008 at 11:42 am

“especially because the BB boys frequent the hospital and plagiarize without shame.”-

I think YG is talking about more than just the Korean Netizen Investigators when he says they are “not ‘real’ music critics”. This PopSeoul writer doesn’t seem to knows what he/she is talking about either.

‘Plagiarism’ is when someone takes another’s work and fails to leave the credits.

Big Bang left credits to let people know the song “Fool” contained sampling from Japanese band Daishi Dance’s “Piano”, so therefore, they did not plagiarize.
Perhaps this article was meant to be a joke? Hahaha.

to :WAKE THE #$%^ UP PEOPLE~
As much as I like them, YG and Big Bang aren’t the best in the world, nor are they perfect. But neither is anyone else in this world.

I’m from America and I can’t bring myself to agree with you at all. There are people in the US who appreciate their music, and don’t worry. They are NOT a bunch of mindless, pubescent teenage girls.

You say “The age of boy bands is dead yet it’s still breathing in Korea, China, Japan and Thailand. It’s just a matter of time before they get sick of it.”

What you really told us is that the age of boy bands is NOT dead. It may be dead in America, but hey, look! They’re quite popular elsewhere! *omg!*

Have you forgotten that America is only a single country within this world? You wrote such a long message, I almost thought you knew what you were talk about until I read it. Now I am only resisting the urge to roll my eyes. I think YOU are the one who needs to wake up.

How can you be so foolish to claim that boy bands are DEAD?

And to further pick at your words ( :P ), I’d like to remind you that boy bands are still celebrated in countries across the world, beyond the borders of Korea, China, Japan and Thailand. If you want an example, I can give you one~ the Philippines. You should consider getting off the internet, since it’s obviously not doing you much good, and go get some education instead. Ignorance may be bliss for you, but for the majority of us who read your comment- it was a pain.

You asked, “Did they get tons of plastic surgery? Did they practice tons of dance choreographies?” Well maybe you haven’t realized, so I’ll point this out to you as well- Big Bang is not just a group of singers. They are categorized under entertainers/performers. Plastic surgery hasn’t got much to do with them. I don’t think any of them have gone under the knife (yet, at least). As for dance choreographies, what do you want them to do? Just stand on the stage, unmoving, and sing their hearts out to dancy beats when the majority of the audience paid to see an exciting PERFORMANCE?

& Big Bang may be considered a hip hop group, but I think they are creating their own style of music. Different styles of music are created by different people. Without these adventurous people who experiment with music, you would have no music to listen to. All you’d be doing is listening to people TALK. Music is in itself, a creation. The question is, do YOU know what music truly is?

Oh, and what do you have to say when you listen to the American music nowadays? The lyrics are sh*t. I don’t even understand why you’re criticizing Big Bang, SE7EN, and Rain’s music when all you hear is filth. Seriously, I’ll laugh if you tell me Soulja Boy wasn’t the last straw for YOU.

There’s so much more I can say in response to your comment, but I’m not going to spend more time on it. I just think you should stop and take some time to listen before you critique.

  6. 7 whyhellothere! January 10, 2008 at 11:54 am

big bang is so overrated. i seriously don’t get why so many people love them. they CAN’T rap. or rap in proper english, for that matter. not that there is anything wrong with that, but i’m just saying. i highly doubt they will make it big in japan. (hell will freeze over before one of their songs go on the oricon chart.) to me they don’t seem to have much talent compared to loads of UNDERrated korean artists. it disappoints me that celebs who make it big in korea need double-eyelid surgery, a weird outfit and some rapping in their songs, and BAM! they’re a legend. big bang is just ilke that. and they DON’T deserve it!!!!!

  7. 8 crystal199187 January 10, 2008 at 7:18 pm

    yeah,i agreed wit michelle…
(You asked, “Did they get tons of plastic surgery? i hope they wun do dat in de near future…
jz like i said earlier,YG company emphasizes more on de singers’ talents n not looks…so,i doubt BB will went under de knife…i dun think rain n se7en went under de knife too…if u wan to complain,do it 2 SM company’s singers…
SM company emphasizes more on looks,so most of their singers went under de knife…for example,Hero JaeJoong from DBSK…

    big bang is hot

  9. 10 Sakura Drops January 11, 2008 at 10:40 am

so why would they sing in English if they are selling the album in Japan? this doesn’t make sense… it’s not like English is Japan’s first language or somethin’ they could have try harder than this… just to say but that YG thing or whatever is not good.

  10. 11 tangy January 11, 2008 at 11:23 am

    i’m a big fan
but i’m really dissappointed with their for the world mini album
i dun understand why their japanese album is in english
even tho now i can sing along to lyrics i actually understand
also the how gee music video sucks
why do they have slutty girls and alcohol all over the place? i dun really think it fits their image…and also the song is crappy
gd’s been have some plagarism issues lately…even tho i know he’s talented….he seems to always need to be “inspired” by someone else’s melody

  11. 12 tangy January 11, 2008 at 11:28 am

also….i luv both sm and yg
    for different reasons

  12. 13 VINCE January 11, 2008 at 2:43 pm

everyone samples songs…..wonder girls “tell me” was sampled too…. all hit songs are usually sampled. GET IT STRAIGHTTT

  13. 14 johnnydorama January 12, 2008 at 1:45 am

Part of the reason why Big Bang is heavily criticized is due to their popularity, as well as G-Dragon’s image as being a musical genius. In a way they brought the attention upon themselves and they should be more careful to uphold their image.

The songs may not be completely plagiarized, but it’s evident that G-Dragon was influenced and took many pieces from the Japanese counter-parts. Fangirls need to open their eyes and understand that G-Dragon is not a musical genius, instead, we refer to him as a genius in the art of stealing.

But in the end, the group is still successful, just not respectable.

  14. 15 Christina January 12, 2008 at 11:39 am

Maybe because they don’t know japanese… any maybe they don’t have time right now.. so thats why they sang in English instead

  15. 16 lopka January 13, 2008 at 4:25 am

Just discovered Big Bang, like a week ago or so. I really like their music even though I don’t understand half of it.

Even so, is it just me or does this song “How Gee” bring a Jennifer Lopez feeling to it?…

  16. 17 Kayla January 13, 2008 at 1:42 pm

I’d like to remind everyone that the artists don’t neccessarily have a say in what happens to them career-wise. When they sign a contract with a company, they basically sign away their souls for a period of time. Whether or not the members wanted to do songs in English, or do some weird MVs, it’s ultimately their company’s decision.

  17. 18 hanayi January 13, 2008 at 2:34 pm

-big bang are not “young teenage boys”. the youngest is 18 years old.
-i absolutely love them; they have great talent & their music is wonderful<33
-taeyang is the only one that actually knows some japanese, gd knows some chinese, & the others only know korean & some english.
-gd DID NOT PLAIGARIZE! he sampled some music.
& what’s wrong with him being inspired by someone else?! everyone gets inspired by someone, some point in their lives.
-i don’t understnad the girls, the alcohol, & the flashy cars in the HOW GEE mv either; but i still like the rhythmn, words, & the beat of the song :P

-i’m still a strong fan of big bang(:
i don’t really care what they sing about, how they dance, or what they look like; i love their music.
i wouldn’t care if they plaigarized either (even though they didn’t); their music still sounds awesome!

i love top, taeyang, seungri, daesung, & gdragon.
    <333

& if you don’t know what their music talks about, then go learn some korean xP

i also completely agree with “michelle”.

  18. 19 Tsurara January 28, 2008 at 1:50 pm

    to crystal199187:

Ok I get the point, you love to compare TVXQ and BB
I´m a TVXQ fan and I also like BB but your comment about Jaejoong is
not relevant to the horrible song and mv of Big Bang

  19. 20 akakaze February 2, 2008 at 6:01 am

I have to agree with GG:
“I’d also like to add that why is it that almost all the articles and stories popseoul writers publish consist of “bashing and complete negativity?”

I’ve been wondering the same thing haha…I guess this isn’t an informative Kpop news site, it’s a personal blog about the writers’ opinion that mostly about disliking Korean artists. Are you (the writer) Korean, Kpop fans, or a failed Kpop star wannabe?

But still, the writer said some good things about some artists, only a few and were not as excited as critisizing them. Just wondering…

About the MV, yeah sorry to say it sucks!
I like Kpop is because it has different feeling of music. Even the R&B, rap, and hiphop music. Then the singers turn to sing english songs with american style, why bother listening to them anymore?
It’s like going all the way down to Korea to get a BigMac?

  20. 21 akakaze February 2, 2008 at 6:05 am

But, isn’t this song a remake from the original one?

  21. 22 soul February 6, 2008 at 7:49 am

That music video and lyrics made me throw up a little in my mouth. G-Dragon looks like he belongs in the Village People, his outfit was so crossover.

I’m not going to give them pity points for not knowling the language. If they are not fluent in either English or Japanese, then they shouldn’t have even tried to write lyrics in them. The rhymes were craptastic.

  22. 23 ginger vitality February 7, 2008 at 12:50 pm

    Popseoul! Handshakes with you..

Got to agree with you.I mean i tried to like Big Bang u know because I loved R&B and hip hop. I loved Epik High and *Eight, others hiphoppers underground. But Big Bang?

I’m sorry girls but the answer is no. I try to be scpeticaland objective while observing music world. But what bothered me with Big Bang is their origiality. Either in the issues of plagarismin music or lyrics. They are quite creative the boys itself and creative and talented in their own way, but why they try so hard to make a mv that look so westernozed and not original at all? That is sure a big wate of their own talent. Whenever I watched their mv’s i was like too much and too overdone of everything, too much sex appeal and too americanized. But some of their songs is enjoyable. Yet i understand that they have the sense that make young girl get crazy and attracted to them. They have teh style tough it is no so original.

I will respected an artist that have their own identity and originality and pure talent eventoyughit is not so perfect but try hard to improve and develop and embark a new genres in music and mv’s. Even if the group is not so popular i still be with them Becasue popularity can decresed yet ture musican will lasting in peoples mind. I loved dbsk, clazziquai, epik high, 8eight, MyAunt Mary, Loveholic, and underground music. I mean i never be satisfied when hear their songs, i feel contended but i want more, something new, let make some more, make some new genres, new identity, new mv’s. And they give me that. The struggles to be different.

  23. 24 anastasia February 7, 2008 at 12:54 pm

Im sorry for the typos and mispellings. I have problems with the keyboard. But still i will continuing observing their music and still respect for those who are a fan of them. Each one on their own based on their justification and how they looking at world and what they have been educated.

    aka ginger vitality

  24. 25 minjee4micky February 7, 2008 at 10:37 pm

big bang is great, .. but then again they aint better than DBSK XD best of luck in japan

  25. 26 people speaks February 8, 2008 at 3:04 pm

I hate people talking bad about people.Nobody perfect..so stop talking like u are perfect!i also love bigbang .i also try to like dbsk..but i’m not saying that they are bad.they are great people!big bang also great!

  26. 27 ginger vitality February 8, 2008 at 3:20 pm

to minjee4micky: I thnik we should not compare them with dbsk or others yet observe them with the music itself.

    Dear people speaks

Chill down. Never ever I say that Big Bang is a bad person. Ever. Try to look and read more carefully. It is never ever about their personality.

    BUT

When it comes to music and issues or morality it is open to critiscm. Any music and art is open to be critic in order to improve it to better leve, We are not critizing in negative way but to make it more positive and better way. If issuees of plagarism is opposed the law are u trying to say it is fair to another people music. Tough it is not proven but is has been questioned.

I respected BB as they are and respected people who are a fan of them and agreed we should not ever compare them with any another group but what I want to point out is comaparison with their won music, MV”S and the real and true sense of originalitu and true sense of REAL MUSIC and LYRIC.

If people critize my favorite group intems of theri music also I can accept that. I also critize when it comes to their music and mv’s. There are humanbeing not perfect so do we. I myself is not perfect as human being.

But critisize is never ever about hating people. While critisize music is never ever realted to personal matter.

Try to differenciate it dear. Good Luck Big Bang! :)

  27. 28 ginger vitality February 8, 2008 at 3:42 pm

i agreed with @BB: I loved their Forever with you. It is a lovely songs. Tough I’m ni a fan of them but i like some of their songs.

@BB Lover: Girl, sorry to dissapointed you but only high school girls or any girly people will like Dbsk for their looks first but most of international fans who are university student, master students, professional are for them because of pure talent dear. Most of them also, attrated to face but yet find out that they can really sing and compose mucis. Hello! Micky Yoochun can compose a music and writes a lyric.

Despite the fact that you didnt like them or didnt find their music appeal to you is ok, but dont say people face disgusting. I myself will dislike/unhappy if people said that even to Big Bang or any group that I’m not a fan with.

Btw: Big Bang could enhance their pure talent, their Dirt Cahs Mv’s is excellent one. I loved it so much. If only this talanted boys can enhance their talent in the right way, I will salute them..

  28. 29 gdLUVangel February 13, 2008 at 11:41 pm

    people!
    DBSK and SS501 are OUT.
i have to admit that the mv wasn’t their best one
but the five boys(oh yeah, victory’s the only boy now)
are purely talented- did u know that GD got in YG when he was eleven? and sol practiced music for 6 yrs.
There were 6 members originally but their boss thought one of em sucked so he kicked him out. These people were picked out by a competition.
These boys are the no.1 singers in korea currently-
and fyi, they went to the states once(and they rocked).
And it’s true that how gee was a song in the sixties.
gd PURPOSLY did a remix on it.
but did u notice that he made the lyrics up by himself?
did u know that their onstage singing rocks more than anyone? did u know what victory composes the choreography without help? did u know that gd composes most of the music?
did u know that BB won sll the first place prizes of all music awards last year? They earned it by their endless work and passion and they deserve it.
gd knows a lot about the states. i think he lived in america for awhile- or was it the influence of the performances? anyways, ginger vitality, this is where BB gets the american-ish style. I lived in missouri for 2 years and i can’t help still using slang and a little of everything americans do. if u prefer mvs like sgwannabe’s or seeya’s, i won’t stop u, but please don’t judge bigbang by their mvs.

  29. 30 Cindy February 20, 2008 at 4:05 pm

    that was extremely disappointing.
i thought big bang was a 5 member group so why is it only top and gdragon with like 45 seconds of taeyong?

the girls got more airtime that seungri and daesung. thats so sad.

and i thought big bang new better…so terrible

  30. 31 ncly February 24, 2008 at 5:58 pm

    wow…
so people in here are now bashing big bang lol..
popseoul is a place for people to bash korean artists i guess?….

    anyways..
Cindy- it’s mostly TOP and GD and just little of Tae Yang..
    i don’t know why…
but in other songs, TOP and GD actualy has little of rapping too…..
i guess this is the only song that TOP has alot of rapping….
u can’t just always look at one song…..look at Last Farewell, TOP only has over 30 seconds of rapping…and the rest is like singing….
so How Gee gives TOP and GD a chance to rap for a longer time…..

    and GD isn’t plagerizing song…..
people said he plagerized Fool (Babo from Hot Issue album),….the truth is that he DIDN”T COPY or PLAGERIZE the song….in their album track, it’s writting that Fool is a sample from a japanese song.

  31. 32 ash February 25, 2008 at 3:47 pm

“gd knows a lot about the states. i think he lived in america for awhile”

LOL. WTH? what exactly does gdragon know about the states?

  32. 33 blinkable February 25, 2008 at 4:25 pm

so they are gonna make it or not? XD
In a way this album has good music to it but after a while the excitement just dies out and the music jus doesnt stay with me O_o

  33. 34 gdLUVangel February 25, 2008 at 6:44 pm

ash-girl, why don’t you ask him yourself??
i don’t have any personal contact with him
