Jay Chou mobbed by Korean fans

Jaychou_20080112.4_popseoul
Jay Chou, one of Taiwan’s most talented artist/composer came to the Land of the Morning Calm to promote his movie and first directorial cum script-writing effort, Secret. Jay was greeted with much enthusiasm and was mobbed by wild Korean fans everywhere he went. To express his appreciation to crazy dedicated fans, he showcased his piano skills and celebrated his birthday in advance with them.
Jay Chou also expressed his desire to meet two Korean beauties including Moon Geun Young and Kim Tae Hee during his interviews. Take a number buddy, but you can get a taste of Jay Chou’s multi-faceted compositional skills in Secret.

  19. 19 Di January 13, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Eh…Japan is the Land of the Rising Sun, Korea is Land of the Morning Calm. Get it straight, people.
But anyway, I wouldn’t have expected Jay Chou to be so popular in Korea especially considering his most recent album was just absolutely cringe inducing.

  20. 20 Jackie January 13, 2008 at 10:06 pm

lol I was gonna say the same exact thing about Japan xP
I guess Korea is the land next to the land of the rising sun… somehow it could work by association LMAO

I love Jay Chou’s music, I’d love to see the movie! I wonder if it’s gonna have a north american release!

  34. 34 WoonRyeo January 14, 2008 at 4:09 am

I know Jay’s really famous in Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, Singapore etc. and he’s sort of known in Japan for Intial D, but never knew he did any kind of promotion in Korea.

Is Jay famous in Korea? Or are those just suju fans?

  35. 35 Tiffany80 January 14, 2008 at 4:33 am

i wanna mob Jay too! Secret was an ok movie. His piano playing tho was amazing!

  36. 36 Vivian January 14, 2008 at 4:36 am

YEah right!!!! They are JUST Suju fan and they just happen to MOLEST Jay Chou by mistake. They are Suju fan and they squeeeeeeeze Jay’s moob (aka chest, this guy don’t have moob like some Suju membs) by mistake!!!!!

i hate seeing ppl worship jay chou like hes the only guy whos multitalented
leehom gary and david are not any less talented than he is
and all three of them sing much better than jay chou ever will
not to mention they have much better personalities.
jay chou is such a bigheaded arrogant snob.

  43. 43 Miun January 14, 2008 at 6:14 am

It’s just that his music genre (very special!!!! I love the rap and the tradional inst. mix together) makes him stand apart from the others…

  44. 44 XiaoXi January 14, 2008 at 6:53 am

There is something really special about Jay. It’s not only his talent–like other posters have noted, there are a lot of truly talented artists…I don’t know: he’s not afraid to be sweet and yet he is cold-hard sexy, too. He’s just cooler than cool.

“Diao” is the word he uses for that undefinable quality–sounds good to me.

Personally, I could eat him up with a spoon. Yum-mee!

  45. 45 Yin January 14, 2008 at 6:54 am

aww. I absolutely adore Jay. He’s an amazing and talented musician. EEEK. why can’t he visit the UK??

  46. 46 jas January 14, 2008 at 7:03 am

good to see all smiles from him.
it is boring to see his stoned face on taiwanese media.

  47. 47 chee January 14, 2008 at 7:08 am

That movie was good, the songs were nice. The piano was composed beautifully. My favorite song in the movie was “Bu Neng Shuo De Mi Mi”…really nice!!

  55. 55 trenner January 14, 2008 at 11:43 am

yeah, korea’s definitely land of the morning calm. if you’ve ever been on korean air, the flight’s magazine is named after the country’s nickname “morning calm.”

  56. 56 Natz January 14, 2008 at 12:29 pm

“Jay Chou also expressed his desire to meet two Korean beauties including Moon Geun Young and Kim Tae Hee during his interviews.”

Is it just me or is there something wrong with this sentence as well?

I didn’t know Jay was popular in korea too! o.O But that’s cool haha~

  57. 57 edit! January 14, 2008 at 12:39 pm

“Jay Chou also expressed his desire to meet two Korean beauties including Moon Geun Young and Kim Tae Hee during his interviews.”

    - Is it just me or is there something wrong with this sentence as well?

that sentence is definitely wrong. lol. either remove “two” or remove “including”; they don’t make sense together.

  70. 70 fraulein January 15, 2008 at 12:33 am

Jay Chou is one awesome musician! He can mumble thru all his songs and yet make them come across as good.

I’ve got tickets and i am going to his concert in here singapore on fri, 4 days and counting….

I cant wait, esp since i missed the last two cos i was sick

    XiaoXi,

    I gather that u’re chinese? where are u originally from ? Taiwan /China /HK ?

  71. 71 fraulein January 15, 2008 at 12:38 am

i also find it a little strange that koreans are into jay chou? Someone pls correct me if i am wrong but, not many koreans understand mandarin yet ?

And Xiaoxi, i think you summed up his musical qualities pretty well. I am chinese but i never fully understood the meaning of “diao ”
Someone once told me it has a risque /connotation if perceived wrongly.

Some ppl find that deadpan expression of his cute.

He’s easy on the eye to me, not drop dead gorgeous but his music is great ; )

Like many stars before him, he tasted quite a few yrs of hardship before making it big. Good on him.

Good to see so many comments and ppl commenting on a korean entertainment blog. And did i mention it’s a refreshing change too ?

  72. 72 shinjinny January 15, 2008 at 3:42 am

One of my old roommates turned me on to Jay Chou. So talented!!! Hope he has fun in Korea!

  73. 73 F January 15, 2008 at 12:21 pm

  77. 77 Ian January 15, 2008 at 2:23 pm

Jay is another overrated artist. Look at his acting in golden flower just made me laugh so hard ( so were other audience in the cinema)

I feel sorry for you guys because you’re missing one of the greatest artists of the world!

  79. 79 spin January 16, 2008 at 2:29 am

Jay chou’s acting is pathetic. Watching Jay Chou’s acting has made me appreciate Edison’s acting chops.

& chou’s previous albums were good, but this last album is horrific (all that country music? I know Jay was/is a fan of that Hao Nan’er show where all those boys sing at least 4 US country songs, but…. eck) He’s losing it.

  80. 80 spin January 16, 2008 at 2:30 am

  82. 82 loderunner January 16, 2008 at 2:08 pm

‘Diao’ is a Hokkien dialect word meaning ‘cool’.

Jay Chou is indeed a rare talented artiste and we should respect him for that!

  83. 83 Jennifer January 16, 2008 at 2:14 pm

~*~*I saw his movie SECRET and I thought it was awesome and I liked his acting too. I even bought the OST because it was fantastic. The music itself was like a supporting actor it added a lot to the movie.*~*~

    P.S.
    Did I mention that he’s H-O-T!! (Muy Caliente!!) :)

  84. 84 Leo January 16, 2008 at 6:08 pm

  85. 85 GL January 18, 2008 at 12:24 am

Yo JC so cool my friend was there and she saw him she has a total crush on him.. dont know why??? in my opinion he is kinda cute but there are much more cuter guys.

  86. 86 fraulein January 19, 2008 at 6:35 pm

I’m inclined to post - I came back from his concert here in singapore last nite. He’s everything ppl say he is. Except the standoffish cold fish part - he was ncharacteristically exuberant/chatty and lively. I’ve seen him on variety progs in his native taiwan where he is chatty but not this upbeat. Hmm, maybe it’s the aura of lurve… the boy just came back from an LA rendezvous with his not so secret girlfriend. Or maybe it was his birthday

I missed his last concert in 2004 because i wasnt a fan yet but boy, was it a great show. And it was his birthday too. Not sure if that played a part, but he did more upbeat songs that most expected, and lesser of the ballads he’s so loved for.

The man played several instruments - the piano, guitar and guzheng. The fans sang happy birthday to him and he said it was alright there was no cake because he already has one at home. He cheerfully joked, do you know anyone else who works so hard and gives performances on their birthday?

I could not help but compare it with the last big gig i attended in Jan 07 - Rain’s world tour. Much as I am a huge rain fan, i found that RWT pales in comparision with Jay’s concert. There was no less pyrotechnics, special effects, props, costumes etc - at at one quarter of the price ! Ok, granted there was no ” moving belt” , stylish dancing and stripping.

It was an honest to goodness show of 2 hrs and 40 mins with many parts where he played to the crowd and actually made it look like he was happy to be there. Again, as opposed to rain’s somewhat forced, mechanical sequences.

Maybe, last nite i actually understood mandarin so i found Jay’s banter enjoyable. As opposed to Rain’s done-to-death ” you’re all my babies “, ROFL.

Dang, time to pick up korean…

And yes, I agree he is mando pop’s best artiste

  87. 87 Wen January 26, 2008 at 4:26 am

Country music is a very beautiful style. Will give Jay credit and chance to explore this style of music.

His new song, Qin Hua Chi is very romantic and lonely.
For Cia Hong, it is touching and grieving.
Wo Bu Pie, smooth and helpless.
The last song is very soulful.

He choose Busy Cowboy as his first song due to its surprising element. And only this song was done in Country music style.

What [spin] comment is just plain negative.
One of his comment on Jay’s acting is pathetic.
yeah So pathetic that he won award for it.

  88. 88 Korean Ajusshi January 26, 2008 at 4:50 am

Calling Korea the Land of Morning Calm is rather ironic, I must admit.

As for Jay Chou, what’s so big deal about him? I mean, his songs remind of the ’80s and ’90s K-pop songs. There are already dozens of Korean singer-songwriters who have been singing the similar songs that he writes and sings now. Frankly, I think he’s just a novelty because he’s one of only very few T-pop/C-pop singers who can come close to the K-pop level.

  89. 89 Passer-by February 12, 2008 at 7:18 am

Korean Ajusshi, you might have just sounded your opinion but it did reflect your arrogance and sadly, also ignorance. Jay’s music is very diversified and he likes to mix the eastern and the western styles, modern and old, as well as all kinds of instruments, but each of his songs is distinguished as a “Chinese” song, retaining its identity. As such, Jay’s music reaches a wide spectrum of audience, from 8 to 80 yrs of age, throughout Asia (including Japan)and the Chinese communities in the West. He not only sings, writes and produces all his songs in his 8 albums (for other famous singers too), he also directs his own MVs, acts in movies, and now at the age of 29, has already directed his own first and award-winning movie — a rare talent of this era well recognised by the regional press.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not picking up a fight but hope that if you don’t appreciate Jay, don’t belittle him at the least. Personally I also like the westernised Korean music.

  90. 90 yoghurtmangoflavour February 23, 2008 at 12:31 am

I am an asian, but i am not a korean, chinese, or a japanese.BUT…Poor Korean ajusshi….He doesn’t know much about this world…Stucked in his little korean-world. doesn’t know much about the outside…which is really sad… korean ajusshi please do explore the ouside alright…and respect the other asians. I do love korean music..as well as the other asians music. Have respect. Don’t brag too much about ur own country. Dont say about things you know little about…Jay Chou is very good.

  91. 91 Another passer by March 18, 2008 at 9:49 am

    Korean Ajusshi,

Where did Kpop artists copy their stuff from? Not to mention Korean culture is largely based on Chinese culture for thousands of years.

Your comments are way out of the line. Why can’t you appreciate someone who is talented vs. trying to bash him? Are you that insecure and jealous that you have to make those stupid comments? By looking at hundred thousands of Jay Chou fans, I would say most people totally disagree with you and he is WAY more popular than many kpop artists.

  92. 92 dingdong March 21, 2008 at 12:30 am

for those who think jay is ugly, i dont think it matters if u are ugly or not, esp. when they got famous cos of their MUSIC! does tt mean you will like someone more just cos they’re PRETTIER? i dont think thats right, looks are only a BONUS, not a NECESSITY.

IMHO, Jay Chou is the greatest artist in Azn music history, perhaps the world. the only reason tt he is not as famous as Madonna or MJ is because he is not Western (dun mean to be ‘racist’ or whatever , but u gotta admit thats true). he is a fantastic role model to children and teenagers, and all his songs are meaningful and thoughtful. i am proud to be a fan of JAY CHOU

    cheers

ps. i agree that that girl in that pic touching Jay’s chest somewhat lacks good looks, but at least she has a good taste in music! :P
