Chae Jung-an crosses the sea to sing

Chaejungan_20080115_popseoul

Actress Chae Jungan will debut as a singer in Japan, after the recent success of Coffee Prince in the Land of Rising Sun. Although Koreans were not a fan of Chae Jungan’s mediocre vocal talents, her management company is banking on her Coffee Prince popularity to make her singing career in Japan.

It sounds like a disaster waiting to happen, but I guess if Park Yong Ha from Winter Sonata made it, there’s no reason stopping Chae Jungan from trying.

Check out Chae Jungan’s embarrassing performance from the late 90s after the jump.

so, I didn’t think she was so bad…if you diss her you have to diss the whole kpop star-making machinery…have to admit I didn’t care for the song or the vid…but her voice is ok..and she at least sings in tune.

  5. 5 pony January 15, 2008 at 6:30 pm

  9. 9 tenka January 15, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Popseoul, you totally should have ditched the Land of the Rising Sun name after that horrendous mistake on the Jay Chou article… That’s my only opinion after reading this.

  10. 10 taeyeon January 15, 2008 at 9:20 pm

eh, its not that bad.. plastic or not.. she’s still pretty so what’s up with yo dissing her?.. :/

  11. 11 ManBearPig January 15, 2008 at 9:23 pm

  12. 12 uniquetaste January 15, 2008 at 9:52 pm

  13. 13 nileey January 15, 2008 at 10:50 pm

umm…i still think she should stick to acting, but she looks so much prettier now!

  14. 14 for real January 16, 2008 at 12:46 am

she must be old if she’s been singing since the 90s. I never heard of this song ’til now.
well she has a nice body and face…

  15. 15 jrizzle January 16, 2008 at 12:49 am

    what the hell..was that.

  16. 16 sid vicious January 16, 2008 at 12:53 am

Korean singers don’t fair well in Japan unless they are mainstream, and even they won’t do better than se7en and he didn’t even dent Boa’s ratings.

It would be better if she targeted China and their billions of people.

  17. 17 dane1986 January 16, 2008 at 1:33 am

Its a smart move…Usually agencies do this to make people know her face and name better. Its a common thing. If she is a success or not its a marketing thing

  18. 18 resabambino January 16, 2008 at 3:11 am

Umm…who is she again. Was she the younger sister or something? Sorry.

  19. 19 xoxo2 January 16, 2008 at 3:57 am

Wonders of plastic surgery. I thought she was way too perfect looking.

  20. 20 lalala January 16, 2008 at 4:01 am

dude that “tess” song was totally popular back in the day.
    “Oo la lae yo~~~”
only someone who was really into the music back then would know.. so i guess not you, popseoul

  21. 21 lalala January 16, 2008 at 4:03 am

i think she aged elegantly.. so many women were taken by how pretty she aged when she came back for coffee prince.. i agree, i think she looks soo much better now than before.

she’s older now, so I think if I were her, I would just stick to becoming a serious, respectable actress in Korea since she’s all “elegant” and pretty. She’s past that age of becoming a pop singer…

  22. 22 SF January 16, 2008 at 4:20 am

i totally remember this song ^^! I feel old :(

  23. 23 George January 16, 2008 at 5:17 am

I don’t know if you can really say that she’s aged “elegantly” when she’s had so much plastic surgery.

And in any case, what was wrong with her before? She looked fine. Seriously though, when is this going to stop? I really can’t tell much of a difference amongst a lot of the current actresses. It’s pretty distressing. (also, if you notice, you can see in “Coffee Prince” that her gums are starting to turn grey) *sigh*

  24. 24 Brina January 16, 2008 at 5:49 am

Wait, That’s suppose to be the same person? They look totally different..
    I’m so confused.

    Whatever.

  25. 25 Hm January 16, 2008 at 7:13 am

I love this song…. I thought she was pretty popular back in the days. :/
    Stop with the dissing.

  26. 26 .... January 16, 2008 at 7:20 am

wow, koreans like surgery alot yeah??
hmm, maybe bcoz they like to talk bad / criticize each other, so they tried not to be a victim.
just my opinion after i got to know some of koreans student here and reading so much here.

  27. 27 Koreanshin January 16, 2008 at 7:21 am

That song is not Tess. That’s Mujeong.

    I loved Tess ^^

  28. 28 TheRealist January 16, 2008 at 8:56 am

Chea Jung was the bomb then. Vocals were poor but she was excellent to watch. Iown all three of hir solo albums :) Excellent music!

  29. 29 Judy January 16, 2008 at 8:59 am

that’s her?! she looks so different.

  30. 30 haru January 16, 2008 at 9:35 am

the song is weird.. and.. is that her in the MV? she looks different..

  31. 31 lilkrnxangel420 January 16, 2008 at 10:05 am

wow i actually remember this song from back in the days. i didn’t know it was her though.

  32. 32 Tiffany January 16, 2008 at 11:16 am

I never knew she was a singer!

But after watching the music video, that really shocked me. I thought she was a natural beauty, or at least did only a tiny bit of plastic surgery (for instance, double eyelids). Now that I know how she used to look like, it just disappoints me. She looks so different =(

  33. 33 crazy persons January 16, 2008 at 12:27 pm

why everyone always acts if its plastic or not?
what? you wan to ak her where hospital she did it, bec you also what to have plastics in your face.
COFFEe prince? THIS DRAMA ISNT POPOPULAR IN JAPAN.
the same goes with. goong(this drama’S time slot in japan is one a week every “3 AM”), lovers in paris and so on.
yah joomong too, heared that they even used BYJ’s name to commercialize it. which is a bad idea bec the fans got angry and nobody watch….
ask her to ride a time machine and join winter sonata first if she likes to be popular here.

  34. 34 bird January 16, 2008 at 1:23 pm

lol at the scene of her eating the rose, reminds me of the funny version of shinhwa’s t.o.p

  35. 35 Nicole January 17, 2008 at 6:53 am

Srry, to say! But she won’t make it… ^_-

  36. 36 Big A January 17, 2008 at 4:41 pm

I personally liked her songs back then…maybe cus I just liked upbeat songs like that.

I could see why her management company would choose to make a move like this in Japan, just look Leah Dizon, the talentless import car model/booth babe turn Japanese singer. Dizon sucks btw, she has had success due to her looks and being part Japanese.

But unfortunately, I also agree that Chae Jung Ahn wont be successful over there. Japanese entertainment is all about fulfilling niches and Boa already filled that “singer from Korea” niche and it would be extremely hard for anyone else to do the same.

  37. 37 Saebin January 18, 2008 at 5:21 pm

that song was painful to listen to.
    too techno-ish too.

  38. 38 grace January 26, 2008 at 12:12 am

i don’t understand why everyone is like omg she’s changed so much.

i watched the video, and although i suck at spot-the-difference games, the differences (if any) aren’t so glaringly obvious that i am able to notice them.

er… i think she just looks older, that’s all..??

  39. 39 keiko February 10, 2008 at 11:34 am

i like the beat in the mv..
    its very techno =]
    but the voice… = =;
haha good luck to her =]
she did an awesome job in coffee prince though.

  40. 40 Cowkana August 15, 2008 at 8:07 pm

CJA made some brilliant music back then. Too bad you can’t get her albums anywhere anymore. I still need the first one myself…

p.s. The MV *is* Tess. This is Moojung: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_rYnKH4qfg
