SM artists representin’ at 2008 Beijing Olympics

Jangriinhankyung_20080117_popseoul

To celebrate the 200 day mark, SM artists Jang Ri In and Super Junior’s Han Kyung will attend the “2008 Beijing Olympic D-200″ event. The ambassadors of Korean pop, along with other Chinese celebrities including the likes of Andy Lau and Jay Chou, will perform “Hand in Hand,” the theme song of the 1988 Seoul Olympics, in Korean, English and Chinese.

While stealing reusing our theme song might come across as being a bit shady, we’re happy to see the impact Korea has made on Chinese culture.

Jang Ri In will also debut, “One More Time,” written by Korean songwriter Yoo Young Jin.

Check out the original “Hand in Hand” from the 1988 Seoul Olympics after the jump.

ahah well i guess china reused the song but doesnt mean they’re stealing. its not like korea has never borrowed or in your words stole anything from another country before

I think you guys are reading too much into this Popseoul post. It doesn’t say that “Hand in Hand” will be the official song of the 2008 Olympics, it just says that those KOREAN singers will be singing the KOREAN version of that song at this D-200 event(probably to relive their memory of their 1988 Olympics). It is kind of stupid to refer to the any Olympics event as “Seoul Olympics” or “Beijing Olympics”. Although it is natural to feel nationalistic pride when the Olympics are held in one’s native country, but the Olympic events is something that is enjoyed by the world.

FYI – the Chinese version of “Hand in Hand” was recorded to demonstrate unity during the SARS epidemic.

“Whoever said that Hangul has been used ever since the 15th century needs to get their facts straight. The Koreans had to create a simpler written language because only the elite and aristocratic could read and write Chinese (which was used first). Therefore, it was either to create another language, or have a nation full of illiterates. Because Hangul was so easy to learn, it was typically used only by women and the uneducated. The country didn’t recognize Hangul as a national language until the early 1900s. What’s so superior about that?”

    I adore bummer’s remark to korean ajusshi’s:

“For the record, Korean writing, which is far superior and easier to learn than the primitive, outdated Chinese characters…..”

    Go die korean ajusshi.

Okay,POPSEOUL, do you have ANY sources for this??

First of all, I’m pretty sure that there JAY CHOU was WRITING the NEW Beijing Olympics theme song, and not just singing some old crap.

By the way, the song “Hand in Hand” sounds terrible.

They’re not going to use it. And please, don’t even start this “stealing culture” thing.

    brap0390,

I’m not chinese, but i like korean entertainment. But saying that korean entertainment influences other cultures? i think that’s a bit too much. and FYI, i don’t think the korean entertainment would be that successful without the chinese. So why don’t you shut the F*ck up.

“Korea > China end of story. That’s why we’re here right?”

    Of course not.
That’s why only you and Korean Ajusshi is here.

In about 5-10 years, you Korean a**holes will be down in the pits again. Worshipping the Chinese, as your f*cking ancestors did up until a few 20 years ago.

  19. 21 Kon January 22, 2008 at 11:01 am

they are onli singing in some countdown event
and only hankyung and jangrin sang hand in hand together not with other stars

  20. 22 toocute January 22, 2008 at 11:04 am

@ michael: nokia is finnish, not japanese.

@ Ian: why do you have to be so hateful? even though im annoyed by racist posts from both koreans and the non-koreans, i just let it go by b/c hey, these ppl are uneducated and stupid. theres no need to bash all korean ppl b/c of some stupid ppl like the popseoul writers.

anyway, there is no such thing as “korea>china or china>korea” or any other comparison for that matter. a country is just a country. ppl, get over it. we cannot CHOOSE where we are born.

and im glad they’re singing “hand in hand”. it’s a great song and it’s nice that asians are putting aside their racist pride (dare i be so hopeful??) and sharing songs and singers. hankyung=LOVE. and to whoever it is that called hankyug “half-assed korean chinese”, go f*ck yourself. is ethnicity/race so important? hankyung is cute and olympic material in terms of his looks, though i can’t say much about his singing.

  21. 23 justill January 22, 2008 at 11:50 am

chinese are just dirty cockroaches/rabbits. there is no chinese worshippers lol

    just grand chinese fantasy.

  23. 25 asd January 22, 2008 at 2:03 pm

    @justill

You are a living proof of uneducated, half literate ppl who pay regards to neither history nor reality.

Living in your own fantasy is a good way to consume your life, but please don’t bother to try sharing your little world with others.

  24. 26 Jo January 23, 2008 at 1:20 am

“So the Koreans have never borrowed anything from the Chinese? I’m bad with dates but I’m pretty sure Korea and Japan basically imported Chinese language, music, decorations, etc way back when. So it’s nice to know they’re finally repaying us. Though we should probably mostly be thanking the U.S. and Europe for the miracle that is synthesized 80s rock. I’m betting they’re remixing a R&B/hip hop version for the new one.”
Just for your info, ALL Koreans acknowledge and are taught that most of their culture is from china.

  25. 27 Mo January 23, 2008 at 2:01 am

    @Jo,

Read the posts of Korean Ajusshi and you will know why NOT ALL Koreans acknowledge this fact.

  26. 28 whoa January 24, 2008 at 6:32 pm

ok ok we all know koreans <3 & pride in korea. chinese <3 & pride in china. that’s great. it’s better than hating on your own culture and race. people. both countries are awesome in their own way. let’s just sit back and enjoy the olympics which is a worldwide celebration does it really matter what song is sung and who sings it?

  27. 29 nglillian January 27, 2008 at 9:43 am

uhhhhh…to my knowledge, beijing’s theme song is “welcome to beijing” ..and they can’t just sing one song during the whole olympics, so mind as well sing some from the past too
    sheesh so protective

  28. 30 ... January 27, 2008 at 10:39 am

dont accuse the chinese of stealing!

  29. 31 nglillian January 27, 2008 at 10:59 am

    woops..i meant “not decided yet”
but definitely isnt hand in hand
and..the video on youtube sounds horrible..maybe cause it was in the 80s..and to me, the 80s was the ugliest decade ever..
but dont get me wrong, im sure the message in the lyrics is inspirational..
aaaaaaaand..for the record, hankyung is 100% CHINESE!! he knows all forms of traditional chinese dances!! lol gotta see him demonstrate on yashimmanman makes me kinda embarrassed of being chinese..apart from that lol IM SUPER PROUD OF BEING CHINESE..and plus
..something annoys me all the time, if you know english, then please do the effort of writing “fighting!” instead of the gay “hwaiting” or “payting???” makes you look stupid and brainwashed by korean entertainment

  30. 32 haha January 27, 2008 at 2:15 pm

  31. 33 tangy January 31, 2008 at 11:54 am

wow i know this is old news and it’s kind of silly for me to comment on it but i just wanted to clear things up

the chinese are not stealing anything…they invited hankyung and ri in to sing this song to promote the olympics
this event had singers singing past olympic songs
does that mean the chinese are stealing every countries songs?

please think about it before you write there things ps

  32. 34 Jackie February 26, 2008 at 1:47 am

man what happened to korean ajusshi, my fav resident pedo…
I don’t mind Koreans being arrogant… There’s tons of arrogant and ignorantly nationalistic people in the world not just korea… although i think its one of the bi products of being a ‘homogenous race’ whatever the hell that means cuz its the biggest myth of all time! I just hate how xenophobic that country is… be proud fine but doesn’t mean u gotta exclude every one else completely! Even with their pop culture they talk about their hallyu wave and expanding their markets and yet they make things so hard for foreign fans. There are tons of Koreans and Korean-Americans that speak english yet they never help us with translations or anything… we cant join their fansites or communities and if they let us they put great restrictions for us.
The chinese are far more generous to westerners in regards to culture and inclusiveness. They let english speakers join their fansites, forums, and communities and let us speak english there without issue. They readily translate things into english for the fans and everything. I love the chinese <3 Not really into their music or pop culture but I love the hospitality and generousity they have shown me over the internet… more than any korean xenophobe has ever done!

  33. 35 lily February 29, 2008 at 1:07 am

^ yah koreans are WAYY too concieted and xenophobic
like at least 97% of koreans I have met have this huge superiority complex.
    it’s annoying as hell
they bash on other nationalities looks yet it’s hugely ironic that their country RELIES on PLASTIC surgery in able to look average or good. You don’t see china, or other parts of asia doing that, yet they still have lots of naturally beautiful ppl-unlike korea -___-

  34. 36 blue March 6, 2008 at 12:30 pm

honestly, you guys should relax. its nice that you guys have pride and everything but seriously, being arrogant and disrespectful to other cultures doesnt make your culture superior. a lot of korean and japanese culture has derived from chinese culture, BUT they are very different now. traces of chinese culture can still be seen but not so much anymore. and its actually mostly the taiwanese people that have been plagarizing songs so please dont criticize the whole chinese ethnicity.

  35. 37 penguin March 11, 2008 at 11:48 am

Wow, why are people so mad that they’re singing the Korean song? They’re not stealing it, they’re singing it to celebrate Korean culture because they are now part of it. I mean, wtf. Sometimes I really hate the stupid sarcastic comments here, but I come here just for the news. They’re not stealing anything, yes Chinese and Korean culture are different. I like Korea and Korean culture, so I’m definitely not bashing it or anything. Despite what people think, China DOES have its own culture. Just because you dont see so many Chinese pop stars and pop groups like in Taiwan doesn’t mean we don’t have a nice culture.

On the contrary, I’m happy there are people like Jang Ri In and Han geng representing China :D Let’s not be so hateful and mean, now. Don’t insult a whole freaking race. I like Koreans, Chinese, and Japanese people. I hate stupid people.
