Won Bin jump starts career by modeling first

20080124wonbin

Somewhat fresh from completing his military service, Won Bin (real name Kim Do-jin) will ease back into the limelight by modeling gigs before moving into acting roles.

What this means is that there are no acting roles lined up for the puppy-eyed actor now. And the only way to for him to get any media exposure is with the modeling gig for domestic men’s clothing brand ZioZia.

Won Bin needs to get off his sad horse. Really. Almost every picture I have seen recently, he has this very melancholy look in his eye.

To get over whatever is dampening his soul, he should take the advice of domestic frozen dessert maker, Red Mango, “Start Loving yourself.”

Oo, want some Red Mango now.

  7. 7 nov January 24, 2008 at 8:00 am

Did anything happen during his military service? I heard he volunteered to station at the Korean border…

  8. 8 Joe January 24, 2008 at 8:19 am

Serving the mandatory 2 year military commitment for a whole bunch of Korean males is not some “walk in the park” (had to add the cliche). Do you really believe he can just “forget” about his experiences while serving for the Korean army? Come on now, no human being can bounce back immediately after serving the two years.

I know full well what the Korean military is like, one, from visiting my cousin at his army base (and seeing how depressing it was) and two, hearing many horror stories from my friends about weird and sick initiation practices, guys going mentally ill, and more shocking things that don’t really make it out into the public eye as often as it should be.

The Korean army changes Korean guys dramatically, they are practically considered “nothing” in the army, just indebted to the Korean government and forced to fight if North Korea ever invades.

One day He will smile. ^_^

  12. 12 mzpakipot January 24, 2008 at 9:19 am

true, i haven’t seen him smile since representing for UNICEF. I do hope he will come out of his emo stage…what’s a red mango?

  13. 13 nov January 24, 2008 at 9:20 am

    @Joe

It is the same everywhere, well, at least the same in China and Canada, where I have many close friends who either served in the army voluntarily, or joined the army reserves. I guess the only difference is that those I mentioned above wanted to go to the army in the first place, while in the Korean case most are forced to serve, to begin with.

we have H-Mart here in Seattle…i wonder if they sell red mango….

  15. 15 icingonthacake January 24, 2008 at 9:33 am

he got ass raped in military

  16. 16 soju January 24, 2008 at 9:41 am

hello ajusshi! the waistband on his pants is set too high, and the entire suit just doesn’t do him any justice.

  17. 17 jicks January 24, 2008 at 9:46 am

Everyone needs to read Joe’s comment. People handle experiences differently. Besides, we’re judging by a pic here & there. Cut the guy some slack. I stress again, it’s not sadness or melancholy that I see in his eyes. If you paid attention to his [unicef] appearances you wouldn’t say he was “emo” for sure.

I’m dying to see Won Bin in a new project but I much rather he take his time for something he is comfortable with.

  18. 18 Cassidy January 24, 2008 at 10:26 am

Aww, I thought he would come back by acting. But modeling’s cool. I want him to smile, though.

  19. 19 CiiNDY January 24, 2008 at 11:00 am

did you seriously put a link for red mango on here. -_-

    want to work thereeee

  20. 20 0rchid January 24, 2008 at 11:09 am

yeah what’s wrong with him. how come he has this sad puppy look most of the time.

  21. 21 ed January 24, 2008 at 11:22 am

i hope he doesn’t turn into lee young-ae & spend years picking a “perfect role”.
    lol@ icingondacake.

  22. 22 mookie January 24, 2008 at 11:40 am

*sigh* why are both my gorgeous binnies not having drama/movie roles?!?! what a waste..

he’s just modelling, it’s ok to look sulky and like a sad puppy. He must’ve lost a lot of wt…I dun rem him being soo tall and lanky. He just need to come to me and get some tlc!

  23. 23 james January 24, 2008 at 12:11 pm

Joe, the Korean military has nothing to do with this. As a model, it is one’s job to look enticing in the fashions one is being paid to sell. Just because Won Bin served in the military doesn’t mean he can’t be arsed to look cheery when his job calls for it. Anyone in showbiz should know you have to ‘turn it on’ for the camera.

  24. 24 MYMY January 24, 2008 at 12:54 pm

    James,

Good point. He at least has the responsibility to sell the product. And with this look, it’d be hard to sell. Maybe he is not ready yet, too much emotional baggage he is still carrying? I don’t know. It’s just too depressing to look at him.

Song Seung Heon, who also went for a 2-year army duty, didn’t have the same look; so is Ji Sung. They both look okay, or even better than before.

    Maybe he is just tired.

    mzpakipot

Red Mango is a store and there’s only one in the area, in Bellevue Square. I say you go visit and find out how amazing it is.

  26. 26 Jessyo6t January 24, 2008 at 4:58 pm

Just give him some times, he’ll be back for sure.. I know he’s one of the most talented korean actors ever..

  27. 27 Joe January 24, 2008 at 5:52 pm

    James,

I wasn’t linking the fact that he looks like he does in the picture because of the military. I was linking my comment to the fact that so many people are saying he looks depressed, “emo,” what have you and so I linked the fact that there could have been specific things while serving that changed his personality and maybe gave him a drastic change in his facial expressions compared to before he served.

I wasn’t born yesterday either James, of course I know full well people in the entertainment business “turn it on” for the camera when they have to and yes I know he has that facial expression because it’s what models do to attract customers.

I’m just trying to inform some people who think he’s depressed in photos and worry if something happened to him that it is POSSIBLE certain experiences in the army could have caused him to look “depressed” in some photos. I don’t believe it’s a major reason, but it could have some part in it.

  28. 28 hellaakon January 24, 2008 at 6:01 pm

RED MANGO! god that sounds so good right now…

oh and won bin acting again would be good too… :/

  29. 29 xoxo January 24, 2008 at 7:31 pm

yeah, hope i can see won bin’s smile again.. i wonder wat happened to him.. if all the males in korea has to enter the military training.. then, do gays in korea also have to do that??.. hehex.. just curious..

  30. 30 jicks January 24, 2008 at 9:11 pm

    @james
I’m sure most, if not all companies wouldn’t release images to promote their product/s if the result wasn’t what they were after. And models are always “instructed” at the beginning of most photoshoots as to what sort of vibe or look they should be going after- ‘cheery’ might just not be exactly what their concept was. The backdrop is a dead giveaway. Though, it is hard to tell just by one pic.

  31. 31 spin January 25, 2008 at 12:14 am

correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t won bin serve under a yr’s worth of service?

ah, anyway, I think Won Bin needs a haircut. that could perk his look up.

  32. 32 Myung Lang Sonio January 25, 2008 at 2:00 am

I actually like the sad look in his eyes. I think it goes very well with the outfit and all.

  33. 33 cookie January 25, 2008 at 2:42 am

whatta loser. he is..never liked him. he needs an attitude adjustment!

  34. 34 Blake January 25, 2008 at 3:00 am

emo? depressed? i think we’re jumping the gun here. you can’t judge his inner state based on some modeling pictures.

look at any fashion magazine, W for instance, and you’ll see all the models look moody, haughty or like frozen dolls. as jicks said, the backdrop colors how we perceive his mood. imagine if he posed the same way in front of a bright or city street backdrop.

i still love popseoul… and won bin!

@dandelions, i’m pretty sure i’ve seen a redmango in Flushing as i passed by to get pinkberry. hehe

  35. 35 epuni January 25, 2008 at 5:05 am

  36. 36 Lolly January 25, 2008 at 5:18 am

Maybe he was traumatized after going to Korea. Maybe there were gay men in the military?
