Se7en fails to impress at the White Day Party

se7en_20080314_popseoul2.jpg

Se7en’s appearance at the sub par club, Hiro Ballroom yesterday was a desperate cry for the attention he is used to receiving in the motherland.

But instead of seizing the opportunity, he squandered it by granting the press very little face time which he used to regurgitate some tired rhetoric. His brief interviews were conducted only with the Korean and Japanese press because, he commented, his English requires more work.

After being whisked off to the closed off VIP area, only to surround himself with a choice selection of females, it became clear that Se7en’s investment in the event was limited to alcohol and groupies.

When the soon to debut artist finally took the main stage, it was to recite a brief and obviously rehearsed spiel of easy to pronounce words. And after this attempt to garner hype for his debut, tracks from his new album were played for the crowd via CD, not quite the live showcase we were expecting*. The audience’s reaction was scant, borderline pathetic, to the highly publicized collaborations with Three 6 Mafia, Fabolous, and hitmaker Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins.

It remains unclear how Se7en’s American debut will play out, especially with his lack of confidence and fluency in English. But based on what we witnessed last night, successful integration into the US market seems unlikely, if not impossible.

*Please note that this was based on POPSEOUL!’s expectation. BaseNYC, the promoter of the party stated that Se7en was “hosting” the party.

dayum u guys fell into popseoul’s trick
they only wrote it in this viewpoint to create controversy and therefore more posts!

what they wrote is only from the view point of a few people or possibly just one individual who attended the event, which means it’s just a generalization which probably indicates that all the other websites’ are making generalizations as well

we can only make assumptions (whether positive or negative) so i say we can only label a singer as a failure or success based on the real hard facts

i would never know him if they didnt keep him tailing on Rain, and that kind of srategy works pretty well these days.

and, have never liked asian artist, but i have to make an acception for one single man, i guess!!!

about seven, as an american, i think it’s not about originality that we need here, we just need additional features, old music would be awesome as long as it’s brought with different hypes.

i dont think seven will make it this time. he doesn’t have that additional feautures just yet. he cant just count on good songs and great american producers, how far these producers will help him instead just made him some songs to sing to americans?
one problem is, of course coz he’s an asian
not being racial here, just try to be rationalistic

even for someone who has made quite a mark in USA like Rain, i think it’s still difficult for him, but i dont have worry on Rain, the guy has his own way of thinking and maturely dependent on himself, quite a fighter and has this side of leadership, so.. yeah..

  8. 8 choo March 17, 2008 at 10:43 pm

First of all, don’t call PS people journalists because they that’s hardly the case.

This is why I have HUGE doubt of Rain making it in the US as a singer. Him being an actor is a much wiser choice. If his music will be the same as what se7en is making, I doubt he will succeed.

There should be ORIGINALITY in what they’re bringing.

I don’t think se7en’s music when he was in Korea was the “gangsta” type, right? And when I saw him doing all those “gangsta” moves, that was hella disappointing. Leave the “gangsta lovin’” to the African-Americans. Why can’t he just make smooth R&B music?

    Oh well.

  9. 9 TLflow March 17, 2008 at 11:12 pm

Haha what a wise decision from PS to change the pic and edit the text after reading the ‘’subpar club???” post (whoever wrote this, you rock!)

“onejd, you are so dumb and you obviously havee way too much time on your hands, wait me too.”
I agree to the extent that you’re dumb and obviously have way too much time on your hands. I, on the other hand, have a doctorate and, on the weekends, do have enough free time to write detailed posts like the one above (instead of working retail at GAP or whatever it is that you do).

“but neway, i can think of soooooooooooo many artists that arent approved or associated with blacks that are successful.”
So can I. What’s your point? I never said that only those non-black artists who are approved of or associated with blacks can become successful. In fact, I said the opposite in big capital letters just so people like you, who are idiots, wouldn’t be confused: “I’M NOT SAYING THAT THEIR SUCCESS WAS DEPENDENT ON THAT ASSOCIATION….”

“hit me back if you like the looooong long list.”
The only person who should be doing the hitting is your mama for not schooling you more. Maybe if she did that, I wouldn’t have to done it.

“By the way popseoul much love, love the blog, dont always agree but i love it. peace up a town down”:
I approve this statement even if it sounds like something some teenager wrote.

  11. 11 THE REAL STORY March 18, 2008 at 12:49 am

If popseoul wanted an interview, maybe they should’ve emailed the event coordinators prior to the event like any legit media groups would do and did. Sending 4 girls over to ask the night of for a face to face interview is not industry standard, rather very amateurish. Press was granted to an international field of media, legit media, popseoul not included.

Amateur website with amateur staff. Get real and stop hating. Dont act like the pop seoul girls didnt spazz out like little groupies who wanted face time with Se7en. In actually Se7en is immensely talented and a really nice guy. Dont hate on a fellow korean trying to do something historic. Garbage amateur websites like this do nothing but perpetuate the stereo-types that we as koreans say we experience but in reality, are inflicting upon the most talented of our own kind.

    GROW UP POP SEOUL!

lol you know how any entertainer can make it in the US?
    Oprah.
all these stars need to learn how to kiss oprah’s ass, because in the US, whatever oprah says, goes.

  13. 13 johnnydorama March 18, 2008 at 2:58 am

Amateur or not, this is what blog sites do, they state their opinions. AND judging from POPSEOUL’s huge reader base, the majority of the readers obviously like what they have to say.

With that said, the event seems to have been a huge let-down and failure, which was quite predictable considering it was a BASENYC event.

  14. 14 TRUTH March 18, 2008 at 3:25 am

Johnnydorama, you’re a genuis. I didn’t know people stated their opinions on blog sites. Thanks for clarifying that. And what do you suppose we’re doing? Judging from BASE’s huge customer base, I would say that the consistent 1000+ people who pack the events like it as well. The event seems to have been a huge let down considering it was a BASENYC event? Compared to what? Parties you see in movies while you sit home alone because you couldn’t get in? Obviously you have ZERO credibility. Sorry johnny, numbers don’t lie.

  20. 20 Nelson Lee from Rainstone Live / Swerve Media March 18, 2008 at 4:30 am

Having read a lot of these replies and articles, I am compelled to put my thoughts together here. I have been involved with most of the Korean concerts put together in NYC the past 3 years. Rainstonelive put together the first concert at Hammerstein for 9 artists, including Eugene and Lee Soo Young, then we worked on the Rain concert at MSG, and recently the JYP event at MSG and now the Se7en event with Base at Hiro.

I have always taken the time to work with the press, work with the artists and above all else, work with the fans to ensure a pleasant and smooth experience for everyone involved. I have in the past, spoken to and extended press passes for Popseoul and their respective writers. I always encourage fans and fansites to enjoy the press conferences and events, because at the end of the day, the fans should come first.

Now, having read this site’s writers and their irresponsible writing, I am actually quite perturbed and not the least bit irked at some of their words. It takes a monumental effort to bring these singers over from Korea; help them generate press and publicity; and put together a wonderful show for the fans. These things are difficult and time consuming. It’s by no means a profit-making machine. It’s actually at the end of the day, a labor of love. But some of you so called fans of these singers, are really immature and annoying, to the point that I have come to several conclusions.

Without responsible writing and journalism, I will never ever invite nor extend press passes to anyone who I don’t feel will be partial, nor hold ethical standards in their reporting and writing of any events I am involved in. I am very disappointed to read such opinions that have no weight nor have any credibility. I refuse to believe that fans don’t want to see these singers in the states. What must be true then, is that the few who have nothing better to do than to ridicule something they are not involved in, are nothing more than children hoping to gain attention through shock writing. And to that end, I regrettably must say, that sort of irresponsible writing has no place but in the trash can.

Think before you write. It’s very important that these singers, especially Asian singers receive your utmost support, not your ridicule. Otherwise, what does that tell us about Asians in the music industry in the future?

    Nelson

  21. 21 TRUTH March 18, 2008 at 4:46 am

johnny, why don’t we all regurgitate the same thing over and over. Numbers dont lie, BASENYC has a huge customer base. People state their opinions on blog sites! Happy? Ok, moving forward. How did popseoul rip us a new one? Let them speak for themselves. We both had our words, so I’m done with them. But you? Who are you? At least Popseoul has a site. Where do you get your credibility. Nothing you say is valid. State some facts aside from popseoul having a huge reader base. What about you? What makes you a good judge of events? Compared to where? Compared to who? Basenyc, amateur? I think your definitions are flawed. Basenyc kids? Let me take an educated guess. You’re older than 27 and you’re married? johnny, what are you doing on a teen pop site that even I’m too old for? Stop watching doramas and get a life.

  23. 23 lim33853 March 18, 2008 at 4:52 am

why is a statement in a blog, stating that they hoped seven performed or conversed more to the fans instead of runnung away to the vip section shock writing

having read this site’s writers and their irresponsible writing, I am actually quite perturbed and not the least bit irked at some of their words.

that was a bad management move. like you said fans come first and are very important. this popseoul blog should be a very imformative outlet for you. instead of being upset, you should take in some of the points and the feelings of the koreanamerican fans veiws.

sorry friday turned out so bad.

  24. 24 Paul March 18, 2008 at 4:53 am

As a consumer, I say to the people trying to make se7en a success in America to THINK. As a Korean, of course I want se7en to succeed. At the same time I know garbage when I see it, and his efforts thus far (from what I’ve gathered & seen) is exactly that… I think they should truly start on efforts on turning a kyopo with talent (that can speak english perfectly, no accent) into a star – instead of bringing someone over from Korea. I believe that’s the only way to successfuly penetrate the American market, right now artists like se7en / rain have no mainstream appeal to the average American consumer. You’ll have some fans of course, but it’ll be a small niche market. This whole thought process needs to be THOUGHT more CAREFULLY. Barriers can be broken, but I don’t think Se7en nor Rain will break them.

  25. 25 TRUTH March 18, 2008 at 4:55 am

Ayoe: Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li are actresses… so what are you talking about with them having originality and stuff? How can you compare them to Se7en? I mean, they’re not even singers.

  27. 27 lim33853 March 18, 2008 at 5:05 am

where the hell did zhang Ziyi and Gong Li come from?

cant you tell were in a middle of a fight between johnnyoppa and truth

truth, watchout johnny now has a ferocious watchdog “L”

  28. 28 Nelson Lee from Rainstone Live / Swerve Media March 18, 2008 at 5:06 am

When I have taken the time out to help the fans, the very least,; THE VERY LEAST, I expect in return is a modicum of respect and graciousness. Being a fan does not give you an open ended ok to say what you please and do what you please without regard to anyone else or anything else.

Otherwise, why would I EVER bother to extend a hand to any fansite if I knew they’d be this ungrateful and this irresponsible.

Do you even understand what I am talking about here? Listen, if you were the average fan coming to the event and saying it sucks, GREAT. I have absolutely no problems with that whatsoever.

But if you’re a fansite and you’re calling me to get press passes to write about and report on the event, at the very least, show some respect. You know what rude journalists do when their’s a press conference held?

They read about it in OTHER people’s newspapers. Being a rude report or journalist, gets you nowhere. You’re more than entitled to your own opinion, but if you can not express your thoughts in a partial manner, nor write responsibly, then there is absolutely no reason, nor inclination for anyone in my position, or others doing what I do, to ever extend a hand to any fansites, ever again.

    Capiche?

  29. 29 TRUTH March 18, 2008 at 5:12 am

Well, now im out numbered =(. Not fair. Im gonna go watch Se7en on youtube.

Btw- lim, the event was actually great. I just think that people or “fans” expected the guy to have a concert and shake his ass or whatever. And when it didn’t people panicked and bugged out. Cmon, the flyer said “host”.

There is no point to prove anything to you, all that’s necessary is a summary of events:

    1. Many think the event was a failure.

    2. You are appalled and pissed off that blogs are bashing the event, after all it is your livelihood.

    3. You call PS and anybody else who are bad mouthing the event amateurs, yet the only amateurs are the ones who can’t take the criticism.

    YO BRO

i dont give a crap about what popseoul wrote

i think your upset about the posts below her thread. 99% of these posts were by koreanamericans who speak fluent english and been raised here in the states. we know american music better than alot of people. we were giving our opinions on dos and donts about breaking into the music industry. very good information.

we were playing “manager” and you get a big “F”,and thats why your so upset.

  33. 33 lim33853 March 18, 2008 at 5:40 am

isnt popseoul a blog? didnt she write opinionated topics for years?

nelson mandelee thinks popseoul is the korean times.

    truth-
whats wrong with the over 21 posters here in popseoul? whats wrong with being married? someone had to marry johnny.

  35. 35 TRUTH March 18, 2008 at 6:26 am

    LOL, ok ill bite.

    1. The event was a success and many club goers thought that the event was a success. Just because some fans didnt get what they expected, doesnt mean that the event was a failure.
    2. Im not pissed off that the blog is bashing the event. The girls know why im upset. I would like to keep them out of it but since you insist on riding their coattails till the end. First off, sub-par club? Compared to where? Sub-par females?(which they took out) Cmon now…I saw you girls and im not even going to say anything. “Whisked off to the vip surrounded by groupies etc.” How did they get that first picture of Se7en sitting in the VIP (which was changed). I’ll tell you how, because they snuck in and from what I saw, I couldn’t tell which were the groupies.
2.5. My livelihood? Cmon Johnny do you really want to get personal? Tell you what…. I’ll lay all my personal facts out with proof if youre willing to.
    3. Again, you’re riding the girls but ok. Amateurs are the ones who show up to events unannounced. Amateurs are the ones that don’t get their facts straight. You are NOT an amateur johnny. You’re a nobody.
    4. Mid-life crisis at its worst
    5. Stay tuned for more weak replys by johnny because he has nothing better.

i find it funny that you are so bent over a blog post… keep going.

  38. 38 QUESTION March 18, 2008 at 6:52 am

Why bash the “sub par” club or the event coordinators bc he didn’t perform, looked “fat”, and couldn’t “speak english fluently”?

    I’ll quote milseanworldpress.com:
    http://milsean.wordpress.com/2008/03/16/se7ens-white-day-extravaganza-fail/

“Fans (or perhaps anti-fans…) who attended the event in New York have complained that he spoke briefly in English, played (NOT performed) three new English tracks and that poor Se7en oppa is F-A-T.

I’m not sure what exactly they were expecting though.

He was added to the original line-up as a “host” (read: big-name to sell tickets), nobody said anything about a live performance. Se7en’s live debut of his new album will make or break him in America. He’s put nigh on two years work (in theory…) into this – he was never going to place all his bets on some non-event in New York.”

No need to bash the wrong people. It will only lead to severed relations. Lets all stop with the name calling and going back and forth with this nonsense.

Everyone please read what Korea Times, Joongang, Segye, NHK, Tv Japan has published today! :)

  48. 48 Homeless March 18, 2008 at 8:42 am

“It’s very important that these singers, especially Asian singers receive your utmost support, not your ridicule. Otherwise, what does that tell us about Asians in the music industry in the future?”

Those that are deemed to deserve ridicule should receive it, regardless if they’re Asian or not. Popseoul writers felt Se7en was unimpressive, and expressed their opinion on their opinion blog. The notion that they shouldn’t have done so (and instead should have supported him) because the artist was Asian is ridiculous. Artists should be recognized by their abilities as artists first, not by their ethnicity. Just because one is Asian, doesn’t mean that one ’should’ automatically support all Asian artists- you’d support those you feel deserve support and ridicule those you feel deserve ridicule. You can’t honestly expect all reporters to shower se7en with praise just because they’re Asian, the artist is Asian, and you gave them access…

But thank you Mr. Lee, for your efforts in bringing our favorite artists over to America. As a non Asian who has very little chance of going to Korea, I really appreciate your company’s efforts for overseas fans. And I also appreciate your giving of passes to more local fan sites, whose opinions I respect but take with a grain of salt (as I know they are only opinions), it really makes the artists feel so much more accessible and real.
    ————-
And good luck to se7en, hopefully his team will read some of the opinions of the fans/commenters (don’t forget, many of the ‘negative’ comments were made by fans of se7en who don’t mind criticizing when it is necessary- not all fans are totally blinded by their fandom and think they’re favorite artists can do no wrong) on this article and make the future parties that much better. Good luck to se7en as an artist.

  49. 49 PartyTime March 18, 2008 at 9:17 am

I am actually surprised with your writeup of the event. I went to the party that night and thought it was a huge success for Se7en. Did you see the line outside at 2:30 in the morning? The diversity of the crowd also spoke for itself. And yes, while we would’ve all liked to see Se7en actually perform, it was never advertised that he would so to bash him because he only came out for a few minutes to introduce his songs is ridiculous.
As for the music, I thought the last two songs were very mainstream and really catchy and was really impressed by them. It showed Se7en is able to cater to the American market. I don’t know why you guys say audience reaction was pathetic- did you expect people to jump on tables and start pole dancing? I was on the second floor and saw that almost every single person had their camera and phones out recording everything, which of course is not surprising since this was the highlight of the party and that a lot of people who weren’t busy recording (like me) was having a good time grooving to the music. Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion, of course, I just think yours sounds skewed for some reason when what I happened to see at the party was completely different from what you report.

  50. 50 Aki March 18, 2008 at 11:02 am

OMG!! I love Se7en but boy is he starting to look absolutely horrible..he better watch out this is America and are we not so famous on our oily foods….i hope he gets his confidence back up because Americans don’t expect him to do a half-ass job…i’m sorry but i’m criticizing se7en like this because i loved as an entertainer in Korea and yes i expect a lot from him…by the way i’m asian!!
