I believe in certain parts of Thailand, (very) long necks are considered the epitome of beauty. If you’ve seen Asian (not Asian American) actresses (esp. Korean and Japanese) in real life, the one thing that strikes you is how “miniature” they look. Regardless of height, they have tiny doll-like faces, and that makes them look tiny even when tall. Or to put another way, when they do print modeling or TV, they don’t look short.

Americans are just as obsessed with numbers, but in terms of the body. Measurements, dress sizes, weight. That’s again, cultural bias. In Asia, cute is beautiful. In America, hot is beautiful. And in both countries, both talk a lot more than they actually do.

at one point in time, asians thought a 24 inch waist was ideal. but after the emphasis on a small waist circumference, now the ideal is 23 and some i’ve seen even had 22 inch waists. you just need to start a little trend for ppl to abuse it. it wouldn’t be surprising if someday we find someone with an 11 cm face and they’ll be the next beauty.

Koreans are very proud of their country due to their nationalistic views and patriotism. It’s not unusual as pride is natural. It’d be unusual if one wasn’t proud of their heritage. Some Koreans are xenophobic (fear of foreigners) which is why some write comments that criticize and belittle someone not from Korea. But today it’s come to a lesser extent as Korea is becoming more open and accepting foreigners. More than a million living in Korea are not ethnically Korean. It’s just a different culture so you shouldn’t bash them for something that you don’t understand. Korea is crazy about their health and beauty since those usually determine if you will be successful or not.

Beauty shouldn’t be one of the main criteria for a job. Rather, knowledge should be. I understand there are some occupations out there that have slightly higher standards when it comes to looks such as a model or a salesperson promoting healthy skin care. Sure, but we’re also talking about ideals for actresses and models. It’s often been remarked by even Koreans that their “beautiful people” look very little like them now . . . which also happens to be true in America. The tiny face thing makes more sense once you meet these people in real life, because it’s really shocking to see how tiny these people are, even at a fairly tall 5′5 to 5′7 height. Even BoA — she is a little thing in real life. But it doesn’t look like this on TV.
In terms of the plastic surgery thing, it’s probably true that Korea treats eyelid surgery as we treat braces. In fact, other countries don’t understand why we’re so obsessive about straight, white teeth. Koreans spend less per capita on plastic surgery than Japan or Hong Kong, but they talk about it much more. Also, Americans find the preoccupation with modifying the face as disturbing because we see the face as “you”, whereas breast implants, liposuction, and gastric bypass as more “functional” improvements.
The self-hatred thing is something that many Americans project onto Koreans (in the way that Americans in general project “achievement is misery” on Asian culture), because in American body image IS a nasty issue. But, Koreans are critical (and very astute) about beauty as a matter of course. One of my friends, who was born in Korea, convinced me one day of all the flaws Song Hye Gyo has, even while acknowledging that she is beautiful. After all that, I didn’t see her as “beautiful” anymore . . . just very fortunate. But such is how they talk amongst each other.

The small size of her face helps. She has a perfect oval shape (as a face gets larger, the oval widens into more of a moon shaped), and she doesn’t need fringes to hide a high forehead.
Her brows could be more arched though. If they were, you would notice the soft V-line of her jawline.

Korea is a plastic surgery WONDERLAND, they’re very good at it compare to other countries and most of them come out look pretty “NATURAL” and becos the people in general are aint as good looking as their neighbour countries that’s why plastic are booming. Even their own pple said so.

trust me, this is true. I’m 5′5″ and the length of my face is 18 cm and the diameter of my face is 13 cm (1 cm more than kim tae hee), but nobody ever called me “beautiful”. and I’m definitely not going to be in any CF b/c of this. *sigh.

I was saying that I feel bad for someone who actually does have a small face because the majority of the comments were negative about small faces. Just because they don’t look like Kim Tae Hee, doesn’t mean they can’t have small faces. I’m not saying they have to be beautiful; I didn’t even say Kim Tae Hee was beautiful. concept of beauty, the V line, the S line and all those lines. Actually I have all those lines and I got the small face, smaller than Kim tae hee. so I’m prettier than Kim tae hee? I don’t think so.
I’m just an ordinary girl in my country my beauty is common but no wonder Korean guys are just crazy over my beauty because of this concept. Maybe it’s just that the heart shape and small shape face in Korea is not common so if you have it, you got “something”. Most Korean women are slim, but not most of them got the S line, I must say most of them are flat so Korean guys just go crazy when they see “chukchukpangpang” women. In the contrary, western men and other nationality prefer the slim type. Well in my country men prefer curvacious, that is our concept of sexiness while other country like Japan slenderness is sexiness. Beauty is a very big deal in Korea bigger than any other country, women just envy other women’s beauty. Real beauty is the inner beauty and beauty doesn’t exactly mean happiness
You can be beautiful depending on the way you carry yourself. I remember a Korean movie entittled “How to keep my love” starring Kim Jeong-eun and Kim Sang gyeong. The movie depicts
how other korean women envy others’ beauty. It was funny and interesting. Kim Jeong-eun did well in the movie but I like the theme of the movie the most: “women should envy nothing but true love” If you got the beauty but ain’t got true love, can you be really happy? Well, I won’t go further relating happiness to beauty and keeping your love one. Do I talk nonesense? Why are women dying to keep themselves beautiful anyway? Isn’t it because of this two things?

Something about KTH ticks me off. Just participating in this show tells us that she’s pretty arrogant and self-loving about her small face and the way she looks. I thought she was down-to-earth, but I’ve completely changed my mind about her. It’s hard to find anyone that’s genuine and an individual in Korean stardom. I don’t believe that beauty is based on the size of your face. For example, in the Miss Universe contest, there’s a lot of things they consider before you win that contest. I don’t remember any criteria that requires the size of your face. The height, the body measurements,& talent are some of the criterias. My cousin didn’t win the Miss USA contest because she was only 5′4″ tall inspite of her beautiful face & body & talent.
