Celine Dion in Seoul

20080319_celine1

Finally Korea seems to be attracting some big name stars. First was Wentworth Miller, then Beyonce and now Celine Dion performed in Seoul as part of the “Celine Dion Taking Chances Tour” on March 18th, 2008 at Olympic Stadium. The pop diva will perform another night before flying out in a private plane from Gimpo airport on the 20th.

This is Celine’s second trip to Seoul.

  2. 2 Jackie March 19, 2008 at 3:26 pm

    poor korea
    at least she’s out of our hair

  3. 3 Yay... March 19, 2008 at 3:29 pm

    I love her voice, very powerful. When she sings, you can’t hear her breath unlike other singers especially for Asian singers. She’s the real deal. O_O

  4. 4 icingonthacake March 19, 2008 at 3:54 pm

    she’s aged

  5. 5 G.Yoo March 19, 2008 at 4:04 pm

    She looks great for her age.

  6. 6 oluchi March 19, 2008 at 4:25 pm

    poor korea? at least she’s out of our hair?

    when korea produces any real talent with a legendary voice, then you need not import american talent

  7. 7 daniel March 19, 2008 at 4:49 pm

    ^ there are legendary singers in korea
    some don’t have powerhouse vocals like celine but korea has talented singers throughout various genres.
    “then you need not import american talent”
    Um, Stars will go wherever they can make money or where they have fans.
    Maroon 5, My chemical romance, christina aguilera are other artists who have came to korea as well.

    look she didn’t sahve

  8. 8 KeRRi March 19, 2008 at 4:53 pm

    ^Dude I could of sworn Celine was Canadian.
    Anyways the only people that go to her concerts now are gay or over 30.

  9. 9 Tiffany March 19, 2008 at 5:47 pm

    KeRRi: You’re right about that. Celine Dion is Canadian :)

    On the side note ..

    If only Canada can attract Korean stars. It’s so annoying when they are all going to the U.S. As for the country next to them? We are completely ignored.

    PFFTTT.

  10. 10 destin.asian March 19, 2008 at 7:08 pm

    Celion Dion will always be the best.

  11. 11 Dumpling March 19, 2008 at 7:08 pm

    She’s an incredibly goofy, annoying person. Seriously. Her reputation in the States is solid for being a person no one wants to be alone in a room with. She’s that annoying. However, she’s one of the nicest people in the biz and puts on one hell of a show (if you’re a fan of her music–which I’m not). She’s a hard worker.

  12. 12 Dumpling March 19, 2008 at 7:10 pm

    @ oluchi

    Celine Dion is not an “American talent”. She’s Canadian. French-Canadian (Quebec) to be exact.

  13. 13 she March 19, 2008 at 7:23 pm

    Technically, she could be considered an American star because Canada is located in North America.

    She could also be considered American because the US made her rich in the first place!

  14. 14 mannenyuki March 19, 2008 at 7:33 pm

    She is also famous in France… but I prefer Korean singer!

  15. 15 duhduh March 19, 2008 at 9:37 pm

    don’t you guys find it weird that all of a sudden american singers and bands are coming to ASIA (since last year) … probably due to the current bad economy of the US …

  16. 16 funkoffan March 19, 2008 at 9:58 pm

    Looks like she hired Bada’s old make-up artist….

  17. 17 spin March 19, 2008 at 10:07 pm

    lol. Yes, she could be considered american, but most US citizens have ignorantly taken over the name just for north america (completely ignoring canada, mexico, central and south america aka, the whole American continent).

    sort like some ppl dole out the word “asian” (ignoring the rest of the countries in Asia).

    At least Celine gained weight - she doesn’t look as skinny as she has been. but she doesn’t look that great. maybe because she’s wearing a dress meant for teenyboppers.

  18. 18 Dumpling March 19, 2008 at 10:15 pm

    You guys don’t know what you’re talking about. Americans haven’t “ignorantly taken over” anything. We are called Americans because our nation is “The United States of America”. Our nation is NOT called “America”. That is a short form of our real name. The word “America” in our name does not refer to the entire continent, it’s refers to the FIFTY STATES on the continent that combined to form the USA. You are the ones who are ignorant for making such a rude and inappropriate comment about our country.

    Secondly, Celine Dion is from QUEBEC. People from Quebec consider themselves more French than North American. It is utter nonsense to say that she should be considered American just because she was born on this continent and makes her money here. Would you say the same about these people who have made their money in the U.S. and are not from the U.S.?

    Charlize Theron (South African)
    Salma Hayek (Mexican)
    Russell Crowe (New Zealand)
    Nicole Kidman (Australian)

    I think these people would be insulted by the notion that they should be called by a nationality that they are not just because of where their jobs are.

  19. 19 Dumpling March 19, 2008 at 10:21 pm

    @ Spin

    You just “ignorantly” contradicted yourself. You said:

    Mexicans, Canadians, Bolivians, El Salvadorans, etc should be called “American” because of the continents they are on.

    but then you contradicted your own ridiculous theory by saying…

    Koreans, Japanese, Israelis, Indians should *not* be called “Asians” because it “ignores” the individual countries on the continent.

    You make no sense.

    Go back and revise your way of thinking. For the sake of intelligent people everywhere.

  20. 20 Dumpling March 19, 2008 at 10:24 pm

    I just can’t believe the comments here keep getting more and more retarded:

    Celine Dion and other stars are not going to Asia because the U.S. economy is on a down-turn. They are doing it to expand their market. What’s your excuse for South Korean stars trying to come to the U.S.? Is it because the South Korean economy is on the down-turn, too???

    It’s called EXPANDING THEIR MARKETS. Good grief.

  21. 21 aliCia March 19, 2008 at 10:44 pm

    umm that woman needs to shave her legs like forreal

  22. 22 spin March 19, 2008 at 10:44 pm

    wow dumpling. Someone’s cranky!

    “sort like some ppl dole out the word “asian” (ignoring the rest of the countries in Asia).”

    ^this was sarcasm.

    This was my inferred point:

    Koreans, Japanese, Israelis, Indians *should* be called “Asians” because *THEY ARE* countries on the continent.

    ~~~
    forgive me for not spelling it out. As for Americans, it can be used to describe anyone from the American continents
  23. 23 spin March 19, 2008 at 10:48 pm
    *continent
    (i’m waking up myself)
  24. 24 Dumpling March 19, 2008 at 11:36 pm
    All those other people could call themselves Americans if they wanted to–they choose not to, and they were on the continent before the USA was. No one but people from the USA call themselves Americans. You know that, I know that, everybody knows that. Your point is moot, Spin…no matter how you try to “spin” it.
  25. 25 spin March 19, 2008 at 11:44 pm
    you missed the point.
    There’s nothing stopping anyone from calling themselves whatever they want to. its the common perception of what a specific term holds.
  26. 26 Gaijin March 19, 2008 at 11:53 pm
    oh my… what a big (Canadian) head! ;-)
  29. 29 pooksalot March 20, 2008 at 12:11 am
    Dumpling:
    Your writing is atrocious.
    “I think these people would be insulted by the notion that they should be called by a nationality that they are not just because of where their jobs are.”
    WHAT?
    Try revising: “People may be insulted by the idea that they are of a certain nationality simply on the basis of where they work.”
    Thank you, Dumpling, for demonstrating to the readers of Popseoul the importance of reading. Reading helps us communicate in a more fluid and lucid manner. I suggest that you practice reading - DAILY.
    I also recommend to you The Derek Zoolander Center For Kids Who Can’t Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too…because you apparently also suck at life.
  30. 30 kanZENmuketsu March 20, 2008 at 1:49 am
    @Dumpling
    Your say has substance, exposing our “ineptitude” to do research and evaluate the merits of our comments; many
    of which were IRRELEVANT to the topic of this post.
    Some people’s minds are engrossed and absorbed by the
    merest subject of their conversation related to almost anything that only affects them personally, leaving little
    room, in your case, for thinking and writing objectively.
    Should you be vexed at their conduct only to discover
    that their mental qualities do not always tally with your
    calculation? Is there a need for scathing and rancorous remarks, using the word, for example, “retarded,” that
    help only to excite their ill-will?
    Nevertheless, the comments you made are indeed well said!
    …so much for patriotism.
  31. 31 Jane. March 20, 2008 at 2:00 am
    I love that woman’s voice
  32. 32 deumplingeater March 20, 2008 at 2:09 am
    Dumpling, you are wrong to say that Americans have never “ignorantly taken over anything”. How do you think this country was founded? Try reading Johnson v. M’Intosh, 21 U.S. (8 Wheat.) 543 (1823). I am all for being patriotic, but you have to do your homework before you make broad, sweeping comments like that.
  33. 33 Brina March 20, 2008 at 2:10 am
    OMG GUYS.
    SHE DIDN’T SHAVE.
    WTF, get over it. Not everyone shaves.
    I agree with Dumpling..and she seriously has an amazing voice.
  34. 34 Blahblahbon March 20, 2008 at 2:29 am
    “Go back and revise your way of thinking. For the sake of intelligent people everywhere.”
    Dumpling.. You shouldn’t worry about Spin’s way of thinking if it’s for the sake of intelligent people, clearly you don’t fall in that category.
    You’re that annoying person everyone hates conversing with. That person who just won’t end the damn conversation even though there really is nothing else left to say. That person who relies on insulting others instead of actually coming up with an intelligent and rational response. I can only assume you’re either a child who hasn’t reached puberty yet, therefore still an immature little twat. Or you’re old enough to have reached maturity but have not quite reached it.. making you, once again, an immature twat.
    Get my drift?
    Want some advice? Shut up.
    Your witty remarks and ignorant responses don’t affect me. I’m surrounded by incompetent idiots daily, you’re nothing special.
  35. 35 Dumpling March 20, 2008 at 2:31 am
    @ deumplingeater
    You moron, when I said we have never taken over anything it was a response to a comment by Spin stating that we “took over” the use of the word “American”.
    Try to keep on track!!!! Follow your own advice about “mak[ing] broad, sweeping comments like that”.
  36. 36 Dumpling March 20, 2008 at 2:32 am
    “You’re that annoying person everyone hates conversing with.”
    And yet sooooooooo many of you continue to do it.
    Thanks for playing!!
  37. 37 Dumpling March 20, 2008 at 2:33 am
    “Your witty remarks and ignorant responses don’t affect me.”
    Oh, I can tell you aren’t affected.
    (rolls @@ eyes)
  38. 38 Dumpling March 20, 2008 at 2:39 am
    “you missed the point.”
    No, I didn’t, Spin. Your point (or rather, your accusation) was that Americans have hijacked the use of the word American. My reply to you was that the other “Americans” existed on the continent before we did–so why weren’t they calling themselves “Americans”? If they wanted to, they could have. They chose not to, so we choose to.
  39. 39 Max March 20, 2008 at 2:54 am
    Can they even understand the songs? LOL!
  40. 40 Cutie March 20, 2008 at 3:33 am
    Lots of people comin’… A few days ago I was watching on tv - the Backstreet Boys (or was it Nsync… I forget… I dont play attention to either of them. But one had black hair and lots of tattoos and the other guy had blonde) was in Korea recently @.@
  41. 41 wow March 20, 2008 at 4:10 am
    lol it’s funny how blahblahbon and dumpling are fighting over this
    i thought you guys would go well together since you’re both pretty annoying (personal thought, but im sure ppl agree with me)
    this is just a blog, why even bother talking “intelligently”?
    let’s just say celine dion is a french canadian under an american recording label, okay?
    and let’s face it
    most asians living in asia refer to canadians as americans, as in citizens of the USA, because they JUST DON’T KNOW.
    (being canadian, that really bothers me)
  42. 42 Evercool March 20, 2008 at 4:13 am
    (oh and i’m not referring to ms. dion- she can stay in my country- “AMERICA” all she wants…she’s cool!)
    re wow- you couldn’t have said any better.
  52. 52 Mina March 20, 2008 at 7:56 am
    Celine Dion is the real deal! Her voice didn’t age a single bit. Her newest album is gorgeous as always.
    And who the hell said that Celine’s listeners are either gay or >30 ? stupid as hell. But yeah, if gay pp and >30 can make her the best selling (female wise) artist of all the time, then go GAY and OLD PEOPLE!!!!!!
  53. 53 hyna March 20, 2008 at 8:30 am
    Her persona can be somewhat annoying, but what the hell, in the end, her voice beats out 99% of all the singers out there. Legendary.
  54. 54 hannah March 20, 2008 at 8:48 am
    I don’t get why Celine performing in Korea is producing SO much unneeded controversy.
    Anyways, she is a powerful singer and that’s great that she came to Korea. Artists rarely come to Korea, and Celine is a pretty big deal I would say.
  55. 55 befuddleMEnt March 20, 2008 at 9:01 am
    @hannah:
    Totally agree.
    Uh guys, she’s just performing. I mean, singers do that sometimes when they want to go on world tours and stuff… and Korea is not a teeny tiny market that should be overlooked. Sheesh. Anyway, she’s a talented woman and a huge international star, so it’s cool that she performed in Korea.
  56. 56 oluchi March 20, 2008 at 9:19 am
    @ Daniel
    “where they have fans.”
    precisely. celine wouldn’t have come to korea if her tix didn’t sell. which was why i directed my comment at jackie in the first place and not you. it’s insulting to think that celine being in korea would mean she’s ‘out of our hair.’ and ‘poor korea.’ poor korea nothing. they wanted her there and there she is.
    if ppl over 30 and gay like her in america then i guess ajummas and ahjussi’s like her in korea. either way she’s getting paid.
    and for your information, i know she’s canadian. stop correcting me.
  57. 57 oluchi March 20, 2008 at 9:22 am
    and wow said it best. she’s a canadian under an american label.
    and how do all these ppl know she’s annoying? have you met her? i don’t understand industry rumors flying around when no one here has proven themselves to be part of the music industry and would as a result of this affiliation, know celine dion’s disposition.
  58. 58 RECYCLE March 20, 2008 at 10:12 am
    Michael Jackson, New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Craig David, Metallica, Beyonce, Maroon 5, Smashing Pumpkins, Black Eyed Peas, Boyz II Men, Usher, Jordan Knight, Oasis, Paris Hilton, Mariah Carey, Ciara, Avril Lavigne, Sting and Ricky Martin have had concerts in Korea. Michael Jackson had 2 sold out concerts at Chamsil Olympic Stadium in 1996 and 1 in 1999. I attended Michael Jackson’s concert in 1996.
  59. 59 Jackie March 20, 2008 at 11:28 am
    Dumpling, I know alot of people from other American countries that refuse to call people from the United States “Americans” they opt to call us “North Americans” or “Yankees” which are both incorrect terms because North America includes alot more than the US and I can’t imagine many southerns would like to have any association with the term “Yankees”
    SO i explain it to them like this… I’m American by continentS (meaning N&S America included), North American by continent (Which also includes Canada, Mexico, Cuba, etc) and American by nationality.
    If they’re say, Brazilian I say they’re American by continents (N&S included), South American by continent (along with Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, Suriname, etc) and Brazilian by nationality.
    So by calling myself American I’m an not exluding them from being American by continental association I’m just specifying my nationality.
    Celine is American by continent of birth but Canadian by Nation of birth.
  60. 60 mIcHeLlE-LuVz-KaNgIn March 20, 2008 at 12:12 pm
    She looks so much older in that one picture
  61. 61 Meru March 20, 2008 at 1:59 pm
    She’s been planning this world tour for quite some time after her consecutive successful shows in Vegas, it has nothing to do with the US economy. Most internationally acclaimed artists tour outside of their countries and to all the big cities across the globe. Yea, she’s a ‘gays/housewives’ magnet, lol, but she’s done quite well for herself considering she’s not constantly in the media spotlight. The difference between real talent and publicity stunts.
  62. 62 Dovey March 20, 2008 at 3:05 pm
    Celine…! Love her voice!
  63. 63 yeap March 20, 2008 at 5:35 pm
    She’s one of the most talented singers of our time. Gotta give her props for that! Her voice is very powerful.
  64. 64 RECYCLE March 21, 2008 at 1:39 am
    Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers and Vince Carter visited Korea as well. Of course Hines Ward visited Korea too. This is good for Korea as well because when people visit, they will know about Korea and spread the word about Korean culture.
  65. 65 Ladeedaa March 21, 2008 at 1:46 am
    Celine is a legend, her voice is incomparable. Now that’s one concert I’d be willing to pay big bucks for!
  66. 66 Dumpling March 21, 2008 at 3:35 am
    Isn’t Hines Ward part Korean?
    I too like that they go to Korea. Korea is an interesting and dynamic country, and outside of my own country Korea is my favorite. (I just have issues with their music industry, that’s all) I’m glad that Korea is getting some attention through American celebrities going there. When I went for my first visit last year I couldn’t believe the negative comments I would get from people when I said I was going. It’s weird how Americans have not a clue about Korean culture, food, or entertainment industry–nor do they seem interested in learning. I really think the average American thinks Korea is a country full of rice patties and dry cleaners.
  67. 67 Dumpling March 21, 2008 at 3:40 am
    @ Jackie
    I just don’t know why it’s an issue at all. We have to call ourselves Americans. What other option do we have?? Since our country is called The United States of America, what would we call ourselves if not American…”Unitarians”? “Staters”? Nothing else works but “Americans”. People from Mexico are Mexicans, people from Korea are Koreans, people from Argentina are Argentinians, people from Tanzania are Tanzanians. The USA doesn’t have that kind of name–we have to be called Americans. Nothing else fits. I don’t think this should even be an issue. It’s seems to me that it’s only an issue for people who have some anti-American prejudices and want to find fault with us at every turn, so they accuse us of somehow being “imperialist” and “stealing” the name American. What utter and complete bullsh*t this is.
  68. 68 irees March 21, 2008 at 5:11 am
    You forgot Paris Hilton, PopSeoul! Hahaaa! Celine Dion is amazing. I don’t know why you guys are being mean on the lady! She’s great!
