Lee Dong-gun’s younger brother murdered

Leedonggun_20080321_popseoul

Lee Dong-gun’s younger brother (21) was murdered by two Chinese teenagers (1 8) at Sydney’s World Square about 1am today in Sydney, Australia yesterday.

Two eighteen year old teenagers stabbed Lee Dong-gun’s younger brother and his friend, identified as Song because they thought that Lee and Song were looking down at them. Lee died almost instantly and Song is currently in critical conditions.

The argument is believed to have begun at a Hungry Jack’s restaurant on the corner of Liverpool and George streets.

The defendants were caught an hour after the crime and Lee Dong-gun and his family quickly flew to Sydney to identify the body.

What a tough year for Lee Dong-gun. First, the highly publicized break-up, the expulsion and now the unfortunate death of his baby brother…

Our condolences to the Lee family. RIP Lee (name unidentified).

  26. 26 APRIL March 22, 2008 at 4:48 am

It’s a crime to out live your parents especially that way.

But there is a red flag in this…why does there seem to be an important emphasis on the 2 teenagers being Chinese? Is there suspicion of this being a racial crime? Won’t that result in some anti-Chinese reactions from Lee Dong-gun fans?

  27. 27 ahhh March 22, 2008 at 4:51 am

    @ dirtychanks:

not ALL chinese act like that. stop being racist thinking two people can represent an entire race.

  28. 28 kanZENmuketsu March 22, 2008 at 4:51 am

    So saddened to hear such devastating news;
My heartfelt sympathy goes to him and his family.

I never understand how the debt of one’s impudence,
if proven to be so, is paid at a cost of one’s life.
Giving a “dirty looks” or “looking down” at someone
does NOT justify a recipient to resort to violence.

Why give rise to anger when those two individuals,
for the sake of HONOR, could have just walked away.

  34. 34 TY March 22, 2008 at 5:02 am

I think the police thought the 2 Chinese murderers were in an Asian gang…I think that is why the emphasis is on them being Chinese.

I think it has more to do with teenage immaturity (the killers) and them possibly being in a gang than the two being Chinese.

I don’t think it should be made into a Chinese vs. Korean thing.

It’s so sad. To kill someone because they glanced at you???

    My condolences to Lee’s family.

  35. 35 leah March 22, 2008 at 5:06 am

This is absolutely tragic. To be killed over some perceived “look”, it’s senseless!

  37. 37 sf March 22, 2008 at 5:08 am

    @April
Interesting huh? Was it indeed a “race crime” or was it writers simply trying to describe the attackers? In this case, I think there may be some indication this might have stemmed from race — It could have just been wording but “how” was JDG’s brother “looking down” on them? Until we find out more we won’t know whether this was a crime that stemmed from race tensions or not…

This worry about using race as a ‘descriptive’ term reminds me of what happened when many Korean-Americans felt ‘too’ much emphasis was being placed on Cho Seung Hui being Korean. Since LDG is actually a fairly popular actor, there’s no question some racial tension will be present in the backlash. The real tragedy here is that racist people will not be able to resist the opportunity to make cruel generalizations, feed the cycle of hate, and ultimately open the doors to another opportunity for another crime just like this to happen.

    ***

…I can’t imagine what it’d be like to lose my brother and I hope all the best for LDG and his family.

  38. 38 jojo March 22, 2008 at 5:09 am

    Thanks Chocolate for the picture.

So sad to think something like this can happen. My condolences to LDG and his family. May he RIP. He has truly had a rough year. What a great guy he is - not speaking out on his relationship with Han Ji Hye. Now that is a real gentleman.
    Kuddos to him!!!!

Let’s not make this a racial issue people. We may never know the facts. There are stupid people all over this world. Let’s hope someday that the anger and hostility that some feel can be healed and we can live in a loving and caring world.

  39. 39 sf March 22, 2008 at 5:12 am

Speaking of the devil….racists have already wormed their way in. In truth, I think PS should delete racist comments especially because this post will likely function as a place for people to offer condolences to LDG and his family. But I suppose if controversy is what PS wants, even at this time, I just hope other people will step up to the plate and remind people like “stupidchanks” that they are the reason “hate crimes” exist in the first place.

  40. 40 Walmart March 22, 2008 at 5:12 am

We love China, those dirty chinks with their cheap ass products give us good profits. As long as the product isn’t poisonous of course…

“The real tragedy here is that racist people will not be able to resist the opportunity to make cruel generalizations, feed the cycle of hate, and ultimately open the doors to another opportunity for another crime just like this to happen.” - sf

I completely agree with you. I’m assuming you were slightly hinting to the person who commented above you? In fact, I was frustrated at the fact that some people continue to hold such strong grudges against a particular race. Perhaps that person had bad encounters with the people around him leading to his judgment, but that’s no justification to make an assumption on the entire race. It is even more ridiculous that that person is encouraging others to discriminate as well.

  42. 42 Lydia March 22, 2008 at 5:26 am

omg .. it’s people like them (chinese boys) who just make living with all different races so hard.. they make the chinese ashamed and the koreans angry..

  43. 43 WillIRememberMe March 22, 2008 at 5:27 am

dirtychanks - “..all the chinese do is embarrass asians. they look dirty, smell dirty, speak dirty and rip off everything in a heart beat… scum of the earth.. just say no to china..”

^—It doesn’t take being Chinese to speak dirty. Case in point: I’m Chinese, and you’re not Chinese.

And any prejudice you have against other nationalities is a betrayal of your own nationality, who I’m sure have felt the bad end of the racist stick in the past.

  44. 44 megane March 22, 2008 at 5:28 am

I’m half Chinese…I think the police just want to identify the ethnic backgrounds here, not to offend people…human beings of different ethnicities have the same number of the good and the bad in them so let’s not generalize the mistake made by those two foolish boys regarding this issue. They will have to pay for it anyway.
The loss of one’s loved one is the ultimate heartbreak one can ever experience and for Donggun and family, my deepest sympathy.

  45. 45 c'est moi March 22, 2008 at 5:29 am

why is there a need to describe the attackers as being “chinese”? just like when the virginia tech incident happened, the western media kept emphasizing the attacker as being “korean”. jesus, kill the western media. if the teens who killed LDG’s bro were white, i doubt the media would say “the attackers who attacked and killed Lee were white”. same thing with the virginia tech incident. they wouldn’t say “this morning at 7 a.m., a WHITE attacker went on a mass rampage”. the western media is always so quick to point out the minorities doing violent acts, but not so quick to point out the majority doing them, too.

  46. 46 Nov March 22, 2008 at 5:32 am

Popseoul — I always get a crack from your posts, although sometimes I think you are just being silly instead of cynical, and other times you show some really good keen eyes that the rest of us don’t have.

but to know that at a sensitive time like this — with riots in Tibet, election in Taiwan, boycotts of the Olympics by obnoxious hollywood dummies — you are still playing up the hatred card just so you get enough comments and popularity, I wouldn’t call you are a racist, but you have really disappointed people who had respects for Koreans.

  47. 47 Q March 22, 2008 at 5:34 am

Everyone who is making this a racial thing needs to jump off a bridge.

    dirtychanks, there’s your cue. GO!

  48. 48 anonymous March 22, 2008 at 5:35 am

    to dirtychanks:

How do you think Americans feel when that South Korean guy from Virginia Tech killed all those people? If you don’t think that Koreans should be stereotyped, I suggest you stop making all those nasty comments about the Chinese.

  49. 49 lOvE March 22, 2008 at 5:35 am

btw, my condolences to LDG. i dont know what kind of “looks” his little brother was giving to the attackers, but violence is never the answer.

if anyone comes across racists or hear racist remarks or read racist remarks (just scroll down this post, you’ll see plenty), just remember, racists are uneducated, ignorant, pathetic people who are not worthy of your attention. They just lack self-esteem, so they feel the need to make others feel inferior so that they can feel better about their pathetic selves.

  50. 50 E March 22, 2008 at 5:36 am

I don’t think it has anything to do with race….we can look at it in a few ways. First off, this wasn’t a random crime… at least it doesn’t seem to be. Did they know each other? And if they did, what kind of interaction did they have before?

Either the two boys who stabbed were crazy psychos, or Lee Dong Gun’s brother and/or friend did something to provoke them….

  51. 51 E March 22, 2008 at 5:38 am

yea i have a question…were those two “Chinese” boys native Australians? (with an Australian Passport?)Because if they were…then I think I’d be more appropriate to say that they were. I mean talking about the VT incident….they said Cho Seung whatever his name was Korean because he wasn’t an American citizen…but I’m sure they would’ve focused on that fact anyways.

  52. 52 Q March 22, 2008 at 5:39 am

    @ Nov

“I wouldn’t call you are a racist, but you have really disappointed people who had respects for Koreans.”

What is exactly wrong with this article? I know Popseoul can be an ass most of the time, but I don’t see anything wrong with what was written.

  53. 53 Lisa March 22, 2008 at 5:40 am

Judging by the comments, I am surprise that some people can be so immature. Is it really necessary to blame the whole chinese race for what two individuals did? Would people still react the same if it was two korean teens instead?

It is quite unfortunate that some people who are obsessed with korean entertainment view koreans as better then others when they are just the same as other people, no race is better than another race. In the end, everyone is human.

I send my prayers to Lee Dong-gun’s younger brother.

  54. 54 Dumpling March 22, 2008 at 5:41 am

OMG, this is soooooooooooo sad. What a nightmare. I will keep this family in my prayers. It’s terribly sad what people will kill over. These days people kill over everything. Someone looked at someone wrong, someone cut someone off in traffic, someone flirted with someone’s girlfriend, someone wanted someone’s trendy shoes. For the past two years radical Muslims have been killing, threatening to kill, and setting fires over a cartoon of Mohammed. It’s still happening. A freakin’ cartoon. People will kill over anything. What a sad world we live in sometimes.

  62. 62 Mark A March 22, 2008 at 5:49 am

As a response to certain pervious comments, I’ll play the devil’s adovcate- Why do some pathetic people always say the chinese are korean wannabes? Why would the chinese want to be koreans when they, in terms of politcal and economic power/influence in the world, are greater then korea? If I remember correctly from my prof lectures, chinese culture and language is the basis for most of the Asian countries- japan, korea, Malayasia etc.

  63. 63 jaimzkehoe March 22, 2008 at 6:00 am

that is very sad i hope he doesnt go depressed and commit suicide like many other korean stars.

  64. 64 KoreanGirl March 22, 2008 at 6:01 am

First of all, most rational and logical people realize that this isn’t a racial thing but a couple of ignorant miscreants are trying to fuel a non-existent flame. No thinking person will disrespect all of China b/c of the acts to two teens; if that were the case, then we’d have to hate the entire world.

What is important here and now?

A man just lost his brother to a violent death. He has to console his mother and father, and try to come to grips with his brother’s death, and seek justice in the courts.

I pray to God that nothing like this ever happens in my family. If people ceased making racist comments, and stopped being so prideful, it would definitely increase the odds of safety for our own loved ones.

Mark, its obviously because they are lacking in education. 99% of educated people know that China has always been the more sophisticated, civilized, cleaner, powerful, nation of the longest unbroken duration in the entire world. Communism contributed to a temporary setback.

It doesn’t mean China is better, or Korea is better. Success does not make people better, just richer and prouder. People are the same wherever you go: they love their families, they know stealing is wrong, they want power, they get jealous, appreciate beauty, etc. SOME Koreans, just because they did remarkably well for the last few decades, want to flaunt it in everyone’s face. Its not right, but its universal human nature. That’s why racism and hyper-nationalism are so annoying. People forget that they are just people, they are all gonna die the same way-

Your soul doesn’t face God with money in your pocket, or a list of your many wonderful accomplishments. Your soul faces God with every dark thought and action you’ve ever done, and whether you can really see yourself for who you are-someone who thinks they are good just cuz they haven’t murdered anyone or robbed a bank, and is entitled to life’s pleasures, but in reality has lived overwhelmingly for personal comfort and gain for their entire lives.

We all need to take a good long look in the mirror, because we are more like those murderous teens than we are like saints, because once we feel slighted, abused, hurt, disrespected, mistreated, ego-bruised, cut-off on the freeway, its so easy to wish death on other people, even for just a few seconds.

Oh Please, Fundamental Islam is a different animal. You would know this if you studied the Koran. In true Islam, you must convert and submit or die, there is no value in free will - hence the almost complete non-existence of free societies in Muslim run Countries. If you are born in a muslim family, you must become muslim, there is no choice involved.

You don’t see fundamental Christians killing if people make fun of Jesus (its on family guy everyday!) in fact, they are commanded to endure insults and disrespect but are commanded to love their enemies anyway, to die for them if need be. Free will is regarded as a fundamental right given to us by God because God wants us to freely Choose either Him or whatever we will.

Buddhists, Hindus, Universalists, Janists, Bahais, Atheists, univeralists, etc, generally don’t kill if you mock their faiths either, well, unless they were atheistic communist regimes, in that case, you have to pretend to stop believing in God or else they will kill you. Also, many “unfundamental” Christians have killed in the 1600s in “the name” of God, but that can’t be attributed to the actual teaching of the Bible whereas the Koran actually does command you to kill unbelievers and be greatly rewarded to boot with 60+ virgins. Its still questioned if women get to go to heaven as some animals are supposed to be worth more than they are.

So no, it isn’t merely about mocking a prophet. Its much scarier than that. Thank goodness most american muslims are not fundamental but nominal muslims, just like most christians.

  82. 82 tricky March 22, 2008 at 7:12 am

I’m Chinese-American, and I don’t have a problem with ps mentioned the two murderers as “Chinese.” That is what any American outlet would have done, and yes it sucks that if those people were white, that same outlet would not have mentioned it. That’s what happens when minorities are involved with any kind of good or bad incident, and that’s our society. And I know you guys live in that same society, because many people are reading racial politics in PS’s post and spouting racist generalizations about each other, which have zilcho to do with the crime. And that is what sucks the most.

Anyway, I’m off my high horse. I have a younger brother, and I can’t imagine what my life would be without him. My deepest felt condolences to him and his family, and I wish only the worst to those two men.

    Woah KoreanGirl,

I’ve never heard it put like that before. It just made me think of how little we think about death even though its a sure thing. To think we all have death in common is kind of shocking. I’m still young but I can die tomorrow for all i know.

My pastor talked about something thats probably relevant to what you said. Something to the effect that the reason we need a savior is because we cannot face God’s holiness and perfect justice because we have sin, but that he stands in our place. I think that is why we shouldn’t be arrogant toward other people, but I’ll probably always struggle with that because I can be a snob, I’ve been mean to a lot of peeps. I’m just really grateful to God because I know i don’t deserve it but I know where I’m going when I die. Anyway, thanks, it really makes me think about the really important things.

  88. 88 Meru March 22, 2008 at 7:35 am

I don’t see what’s wrong with describing the teens as ‘Chinese’, that’s part of who they are, being Chinese. There are always going to be idiots like ‘dirtychanks’ and ‘for real’ who look for any excuse to spew their racial hatred online. Just like there were idiots who blamed South Korea for the Virginia Tech shootings because of one Korean guy.

That said, it’s tragic that the violence occurred, but I wonder how innocent were they, there’s always two sides to the story. I hope he’ll hang in there, God be with him and his family.

I’m Chinese, and I have no problem with PopSeoul posting “2 Chinese boys,” but I DO have a problem with some people here insulting the Chinese race. What those two boys did was very, very wrong, but you don’t have to insult the ENTIRE Chinese race. Saying things like, “They look dirty, smell dirty.. wannabe Koreans..” that’s just going TOO far. No race on the face of this planet is superior or inferior to the other, why can’t some people just get that? Stupid racist comments like that make the world a more horrible place to live in.

R.I.P. Lee Dong Gun’s brother. I wish Lee Dong Gun good luck for the next year.

“It’s because the cartoonist is insulting their prophet. It means he has no respect for other people’s religion.”

When that religion openly promotes violence and abuse, it doesn’t deserve respect. So you’re justifying their KILLING?????? Over a cartoon??? Not only that, but the killing of INNOCENT human beings who had nothing to do with those cartoons—but so what if they did? Do they deserve to DUE for it? Do you honestly think it’s okay to MURDER people and set buildings on fire because you feel “insulted”? If you believe that then you belong in an insane asylum.

It’s called freedom of speech, freedom of the press. If the g-damed Muslims don’t like having their religion insulted then they should STOP THE VIOLENCE they are carrying out all over the freakin’ world, on every continent on this planet. They should stop the oppression of women, the abuse of young girls, the murdering, the raping, the forced submission to Islam, the lying, the wars, the invasions, the butchering, the deceiving, the manipulation, the bombings. When they stop all that and learn to co-exist peacefully with their neighbors, then people will stop drawing rude cartoons of their “prophet”.

Islam: the religion of perpetual outrage. They’re always angry about something.

Love that is not true racists can be anything and sometimes they are quite educated, intelligent, shrewd, etc, so this notion they are uneducated is false. Anyway this has nothing to do with Race and everything to do with brutality, cruelty, and evilness and just because you are a famous star doesn’t make you immune to death, pain or suffering. Like I said i hope these two men receive the maximum punishment allowed and again my sympathies to LDG, he will come out stronger than ever and I hope his ex-girlfriend extended her sympathies as well.

  108. 108 Mr.Mendez March 22, 2008 at 8:14 am

    @kanzenmuketsu

Nope, just stating some facts. Race is not Religion. Religion, world-view, theology, philosophy, etc, are the most significant subjects that a person can study, because it will shape the way one sees the world and how one treats other people and how one values other life. Race is just appearance. I’m not talking about something so superficial.

Most people like to talk about religions as pretty similar. Although there are some truths in all religions, but it doesn’t mean all religions are true. When a Religion gives justification for murdering people on the basis that they don’t believe, When a religion is not about belief but about forced subjugation, we can no longer deceive ourselves into thinking that all world-beliefs are of equal value as we see people being blown up in front of our faces. Why? because we know its wrong. Just like its wrong for those boys to kill over their egos. We can’t say it was merely the boys “philosophy” or “worldview” to kill if someone gave them a dirty look. Everyone can agree absolutely that the murder was wrong. The Boys thought they were justified in killing, but objectively, we know that it is wrong, just like objectively, we know the people shouldn’t kill people merely because they don’t have the same religious perspective.

Is this an important discussion here? Of course, if we don’t stand on inherent principles of truth and justice, the world will continue to spin in the direction of moral relativity and soon anything will go. This cycle has proven to be the destruction of many an advanced civilization.

@KoreanGirl - How right you are about the human state.

I highly doubt this was a race-driven attack. Sydney at night has its share of drunk kids. Usually, that isn’t much trouble if you’re hanging out in a big group or you avoid them completely. People are very volatile around that time at night because they’ve been out drinking.

And Popseoul, it didn’t happen in Liverpool, Sydney. It happened on Liverpool Street, Sydney. (Liverpool is a completely different place, kilometres away from the city)

Here’s an Australian news article for it: http://news.ninemsn.com.au/article.aspx?id=175811

Can you back up any of your assertions? Did you know there are been more than 10,000 *documented* terrorist attacks perpetrated by Muslims since Sept. 11, 2001? That is only *documented* attacks. Can you tell me what other religion anywhere in the world is behaving like this?

Also, I respectfully ask you: How can you judge what the “majority” of Muslims believe? Seriously. Think about your words and how you would back them up before you tell me that my words are wrong.

As for mockery of Islam, you also cannot back up your assertion that “mockery of Islam” would stop, because in the 1,400 year history of Islam Muslims have *always* been violent. We simply have no historical evidence to judge *what* Muslims would be like or what they would be treated like if they co-existed peacefully with their neighbors—because they never have. And before you come back and tell me that about the times that Muslims lived in peace with their neighbors in such and such a country at such and such a point in history, remember this—oppressing people quietly after you have invaded their country, confiscated their properties, set their churches and synagogues on fire, converted the people to your religion, and forced them to to live according to *your* rules is not “co-existing peacefully”. Peace doesn’t equal the absence of violence.

What democratic nation on this earth is raping women with machetes, driving needles into the testicles of little boys in order to sterilize them, chopping off the hands and feet of innocent people, gouging out their eyes, strangling their newborn babies to death, driving people from their country into refugee camps in the middle of dry and barren deserts, starving people to death, setting homes on fire, killing UN peacekeepers who try to help the refugees? “but it doesn’t mean all religions are true”

Right. Nor does it mean that all religions are equal. People like to comfort themselves with this pleasant fairy tale, but it just isn’t so. People like to say “just different paths to the same place”. Not even close. You cannot begin to compare Buddhist teaching of compassion and loving-kindness, or the Christian precept of love of God and neighbor, of the Jewish precept that to save one life is to save an entire world…with the Islamic precepts–as outlined numerous times in the Koran–to “kill the unbeliever wherever you find him”, to kill the unbeliever by “cutting him at the neck from the left ear to the right ear”, referring to Jews and Christians as “apes and pigs”, which calls for the destruction of Israel, which calls for the “the Jews to be driven into the sea”, which calls down Allah’s “wrath upon the unbelievers”, which refers to Jews as “having no souls”, which glorifes pedophilia and sexual abuse of young girls with the example of Mohammed himself who married Aisha when she was 6 years old and consumated he marriage to her when she was 9 years old.

Not all religions are equal and not all can be true.

“Also, I respectfully ask you: How can you judge what the “majority” of Muslims believe? Seriously. Think about your words and how you would back them up before you tell me that my words are wrong. ”

I never said your words were wrong I said a majority of Muslims are not violent, you make the conclusions Muslims everywhere are violent and I said that is not true. Please do not confuse peace loving Muslims with a few religious muslim fanatics and paint Islam and Muslims as violent.

“As for mockery of Islam, you also cannot back up your assertion that “mockery of Islam” would stop, because in the 1,400 year history of Islam Muslims have *always* been violent.”

“We simply have no historical evidence to judge *what* Muslims would be like or what they would be treated like if they co-existed peacefully with their neighbors—because they never have.”

Dumpling they are coexisting peacefully around the world so what are you talking about, like I said you keep confusing radical islamists for all Muslims and that is not true.

    @DWilliams

No one here as said that “most muslims are violent” What we are discussing is Basic, Fundamental Islam. What is the underlying philosophy of Islam. It is not based on Love, It is not based on forgiveness or relationships. Islam’s underlying hold is Fear and Submission. The reason why Islam is such a threat to world peace is because it only takes a small percentage of the Muslim population to be true Islamists, those who actually pick up a Koran and read it and believe it, and obey its commands; it only takes a few in power to bring devastation to nations.

Yes, what Muslims perceive as “Christian” countries experience violence too, but it isn’t in the name of religion but their own individual depravity. What true Christians who study the Bible understand is that they are not good people, but have been given a great gift they don’t deserve. Christians have no cause to think they are better because they know the only reason why they can get into heaven is because they chose to follow the God they wronged Who chose to come in the form of man, to experience our struggles and shame, and because he loved us so much, to take punishment in our stead, fulfilling the need for divine justice. (forgiveness requires the one forgiving to bear the consequences of the other persons wrongdoing instead of punishing the wrongdoer)

Christians live because of God’s grace, and not of our own merit. Sometimes people misunderstand it as arrogance, but it is because I lean not on my own feeble understanding, but on the solid rock that is God’s word. On the basis that He forgave me, so I must do my best to forgive those who wrong me, for God’s sake, and accept his forgiveness and be willing to keep trying when I fail. Our weakness is our strength, because in the knowledge of our own weakness we seek God and acknowledge his Goodness and Accept the gifts He has prepared for us.

Most muslims are not violent people. Most muslims, as I said before, are just nominal muslims, just like most christians are nominal christians who don’t really study the bible. Most people wherever you go in the world, are of the lukewarm variety regarding their faiths, but once they feel they have been wronged as a people, the lukewarms join a bandwagon. Which bandwagon would you prefer, one that is built to throw you off the precipice or one that wants to take you to a place of Honor, Revelation, and Reconciliation? It sounds too good a deal to be true. If it were something humans made up, it would go something like “your good deeds must outweigh your bad deeds” to go to Heaven or reach enlightenment. Its not so simple, and its not about us. God reached out to us because we can’t reach him by ourselves. Its His strength we must rely on, its His glory and the mysteries of the universe that will be fully revealed to us when we die. While we are here we have to learn the difference between good and evil, and make our ultimate choice.

This is so very sad, especially at Easter time when we celebrate what Chirst did to save us from our sins (I am Catholic, this is my belief, therefore it is not my intention to create yet another debate). There is no real comfort in knowing your (his) brother is dead and will never come back. It will take time to heal and forget the pain. So the most we can do is offer our prayers to the dead and to his family.

Racism is present everywhere, wherever you go. But if we try hard to be fair to our neighbors and to our fellow humans, I think it will make a difference.

@KoreanGirl: Your opinion is very respectful, and true. Re-reading it makes me feel good and makes me want to do good. I appreciate it.
