Hollywood remakes My Sassy Girl

my-sassy-girl_20080331_popseoul.jpg

The trailer to the Hollywood remake of the hit movie My Sassy Girl has been leaked. Judging from the preview, Hollywood has managed to turn the hilarious and charming original into a crap-tacular romantic cheese-fest starring Jesse Bradford and Elisa Cuthburt.

The leading D-list actors alone should be indication enough that this movie will bomb at the box office. Jesse Bradford fails to embody the goofy charisma of Cha Tae Hyun, while Elisa Cuthburt comes off as too edgy and too bipolar.

Asian fans will not be pleased, and American audiences will not be interested. Loyal netizens are already buzzing about how this new version will inevitably pale in comparison to the original. Hollywood needs to quit remaking classics to cover up for their own insipid and uninspired movie plots.

The movie is slated to be released later this year.

Don’t be too surprised if it goes straight to DVD.

*sigh* lame racial debates. TRUST ME, no one is going to condemn their own culture and go worship another. THEREFORE, therez no point with this argument because you will never be able to persuade one another.

Damn…you make a comment on a COMMENT page and people start flipping out!!

Girl from Arabia: How dare you have an opinion. How dare you also put down a comment on a comment page. What were you thinking? We should be careful about what we say because the comment and grammar police (jicks) is on the lookout. Basically, if you don’t agree w/ the masses, you are wrong! Hey…its just like Korea in here.

i agree with DaiLo (somewhere up there) — that slapping scene was pathetic. in the movie it was hysterical, A KNEE SLAPPER. but in teh american version it was like… wth?

  4. 4 Lilo April 3, 2008 at 11:39 am

This looks bad and I also saw the korean version and it was also bad.

I don’t know why some people are defending this like its one of history’s greatest movie and should not be remade.

  5. 5 Vita April 3, 2008 at 11:39 am

jicks is the only one who really made sense here. or at least, somewhat tried to stay objective. he/she even defended hollywood cinema. alas, someone was badly affected because jicks called them out for their narrow-minded view of asian cinema. how dare jicks also have an opinion! jeesh. how dare jicks not agree with an opposing view!

and please, let’s leave all these race issues for another forum. this is insane. we’re all equals. we all have shortcomings.

  6. 6 Vita April 3, 2008 at 11:41 am

lilo, it’s a film. it’s subjective. personally, i think the original was a great film, but eh, can’t please everybody.

  7. 7 lyndsey April 3, 2008 at 11:53 am

i had hopes for this movie, and i think it falls short of what i was expecting. the girl is was too happy. she needs to have sorrow in her soul. even when she’s happy, she has to have an underlying tragedy in her appearance and words. the movie is at it’s core a sad romance, not a happy one. its funny, but sad. i think the biggest problem with the movie isn’t the script or film making itself, but elisha cuthbert and her lack of understanding of the nature of her character. she doesn’t deliver her lines well, from what ive seen. they’re lacking depth and it seems like everything’s fun and games, whoo lets go be crazy and insane.

i do however love all the scenes where the guy gets beat up of hurt. the squash and korean martial arts (idk the name of it) are amazing. i do think the american movie surpasses the korean one in the fact that the girl starts beating the guy with the stick. that’s funny.

i dont think the movie will be great, but i think a few people will be intrigued and maybe find the original movie through it, which’ll increase the korean movie industry’s popularity overseas.

so yeah. aja aja msg. xx

It’s just a film, so, people will have subjective points of view. There’s no need to be nasty with others for having opposing opinions. And if others are part of the minority dissent, it doesn’t mean everyone else is out to get you, unless of course you made a rather small-minded comment, then, expect others to call you out. Suck it up.

Many here are just so melodramatic.

Opinions are just that. They aren’t necessarily true; most of them have a bias stance.

As far as race, let’s just accept each other’s differences. Agree to disagree.

Now, for this film, the trailer did not do it for me. I was hoping for more, but maybe if it comes out on dvd, I’ll give it a try. I like the original a lot more.

Haven’t seen the Korean version, but I might check out this one.

    @ Vita
I’ve assumed you were being sarcastic =) I really wasn’t happy w/ the “There are no Asian classics” comment >.<!

    @ Amerasian in Daegu
lol Sorry, but obvious grammatical errors just pee me off. So do the brash comments about the entire cinematic history of Asia.

    @ A Girl From Arabia
“therefore clearly I’m morally and educationally better than u” but then goes off to make a post w/ a million spelling errors & generalises all Americans to be lesser than her own culture.

You don’t have to like the movie, or the actors/actresses, but you can’t deny the impact the original had on the masses in Korea (& many other Asians all around the world.)

gah!!! so not happy wit hollywood!! can’t they come up wit their own ideas?? seriously the trailer, to the remake of it just has me turned off already! nothing will ever be as good as the original!!! someone will havta take me kicking and screaming if they want me to go to this movie!!!

  12. 12 weet April 3, 2008 at 8:21 pm

umm..i think when american remade asian’s movies, the sense of their own becomming to american sense..why didnt they make a new one and used word’based on …..’that would be better for our feeling while watching though..moreover they have chose unfitted performer every times, and also this time’s.

  13. 13 coffetwo April 3, 2008 at 11:29 pm

    EPIC FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope G4tv would gonna feature this on their Epic Fail Segment. But honestly ill still gonna watch this crap in big screen. :0
Pretty bad idea for Hollywood for the remake of My Sassy Girl, there research dept. failed to do their job.
They had opened the Pandora’s Box…
Creating a remake of one of the most successfully Asian movies (which actually my all time fave movie and casted by fave actress) is very risky task.
The remake will suffer the the curse of MSG
The remake would failed to lived the expectations of the viewers. The comparison between the original and remake will always be an issue. To bad for them they don’t even aware of the word culture. There are lots of instances were the culture of the east and west doesn’t get along and the content of the movie itself wasn’t an exemption.
Base from watching the trailer i sense something is missing. In what I saw there wasn’t a appealing chemistry between the lead cast of this remake which too bad coz this aspect was happened to be one of the key ingredients that brought the success of the original(”IDK maybe my judgment were so biased against the remake, coz i happened to be a crazy fan of this movie and jeon ji hyun “) ;)
although i expect nothing good from this movie..pls… give even half the satisfaction i enjoyed from watching the original ;) VAMOS JEON JI HYUN!

…the comments about ‘girl from arabia’ and “american culture”…

um, there are arab americans too you know. Just like there are korean americans, mexican americans, etc. American culture is supposedly formed by a lot ppl’s backgrounds coming together under a common thread – its a country of immigrants (unless you’re native american). Bashing any country’s culture in the same breath as promoting so-called American values, is very…. sophomoric and ignorant.

As for this horrible piece of slop where they’ve butchered one of my favorite movies… I can only agree w/ popseoul, as well as others who echoed the same sentiment – including Blahblahbon’s post – this movie is crap.

    —-
…Asians know how to make it cute and hilarious, Americans focus too much on sex and drugs for my taste. It’ll be a crude movie more than a cute one, that’s just how american movies are. It’s gotten old, I can only watch so much crap. ….
    —–

and the smattering of morons who believe korea can’t produce original movies – obviously have no idea about the kfilm industry, and the amazing quality that’s being produced.

  16. 16 rei April 4, 2008 at 1:41 am

“the girl your mother warned you about.”? what a horrible tagline! i’m prob just gonna watch it to see how much it sucks. hollywood can never capture the wit, humor, and depth of the korean version!

  17. 17 blah! April 4, 2008 at 1:43 am

GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY! white people copy asian movies to much!

  18. 18 Gaby April 4, 2008 at 12:29 pm

Another horrible Hollywood remake. They obviously can’t come up with anything better than to copy.

  19. 19 Dirty Basement April 4, 2008 at 4:46 pm

I have absolutely no problem with Hollywood remaking Korean movies. I think it’s great that they’re showing interest in Korean movies and recognizing how good they are. You guys act like movies aren’t remade in Asia. Koreans remake their own stuff all the time.

  20. 20 measuringsummer April 4, 2008 at 6:06 pm

@ dirty basement, can you list us some of the examples then? They say imitation is the best flattery but too much of it isnt good. And in this case, hollywood making too many remakes.

  21. 21 roxy April 6, 2008 at 2:19 pm

aaaarrrggghhh!!!! another hollywood remake of an asian classic????

    ***spit!!!***

can’t hollywood create some profound and something that is not formulaic as their recent movies nowadays?

first, there were RINGU (Ring), JU-ON (The Grudge), Dark Water, One Missed Call… and Shutter—which are all remade by Hollywood—but Hollywood fails to please Asian audience because american producers went overacting with their effects and almost distorted the idea of an Asian original.

then, they remade THE EYE. Dang! Just because they starred Jessica Alba doesn’t mean they can surpass the Thai-Taiwanese original.

and just before MY SASSY GIRL, there was IL-MARE, which was remade in the persona of THE LAKEHOUSE. Gawd! I’d rather prefer the first one. THE LAKEHOUSE is damn boring. Sandra Bullock and Keannu Reaves looked worse than awkward with their corresponding roles.

Now…. there’s MY SASSY GIRL. I bet you guys! Not only the American remake will go crappy but overacting as well because that so-called loveteam above loooked awkward with the role JJH-CTH did.

    well, what else is next????

    YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE?

    PARK CHAN WOOK’S VENGEANCE TRILOGY?
(Hahahaha!!!! Is any of the Hollywood stars can give justice to the roles originally done by Song Kang Ho, Shin Ha-kyun, Choi Min-sik, Bae Doo Na, Lee Young Ae? In your dreams hollywood people and its fanatics! None any of those hollywood actresses can play the role great like Lee Young Ae did! They will definitely fail to garner sympathy. Not even Ben Affleck)

    SECRET SUNSHINE?

    JOINT SECURITY AREA?

To korean movie bashers, before you start accusing korean producers as imitators, better think if hollywood never imitated asians. Korean movies are not as formulaic and trite as Hollywood films. Nowadays, Hollywood films are gettin’ uninteresting. If they hit, then they’re overrated—especially their romantic comedies.

  22. 23 Dira April 9, 2008 at 4:47 am

why the hell does Hollywood keep remaking asian films?

I mean they just suck all the greatness from the films and make them sucky.

don’t get me wrong they have made some great remakes but they should just leave some movies alone.
Have anyone learn a foreign language or have them all learn to read the sub titles

  23. 25 shine[hearts]kangin April 13, 2008 at 10:33 am

i’m not looking forward to it….i’d prefer the korean version..though the main guy is really cute..and this movie looks…cute. but..i’d prefer the korean on over anything.

  24. 26 Riley April 14, 2008 at 3:12 am

Wow…the trailer gives a TOTALLY different feel from the Korean movie. It seems darker and doesn’t have that funny outrageous spark. Does it take place entirely in the gloomy surreal like bowls of the earth aka subway?

It makes me wonder who culturally specific elements of films are and who they are hiring to rework the movies.

I think a more literal translation (zany, silly) would have done realy well given the current US market for low-brow comedies.

If I never watched My Sassy Girl or knew about it, I’m still not sure I’d want to watch this (US remake) film.

I’m curious to see how ‘My Wife Is a Gangster’ turns out.

my sassy girl is a classic and this remake is a major NO NO!

  26. 28 Mike June 12, 2008 at 3:01 am

Sigh. The preview looks pretty crappy. And i loved the original My Sassy Girl. And yes, Hollywood seems to copy so many asian movie…And always manage to make it a dumbed down version with horrible acting and story is much weaker…Search movies like The Eye for example. The american version was lame. Check out many more movies… what’s going on hollywood? stop making such craptacular copies.
They need to start being more original.

  27. 29 fred July 30, 2008 at 4:53 pm

lol looks like it did bomb hard.
    a Philippines release?
and straight to dvd in the usa.
i guess its good that its being buried.
but its a damn shame a moment to remember and my sassy girl arent being carried on netflix!!
contact them and request they carry the title!
