Hollywood remakes My Sassy Girl

my-sassy-girl_20080331_popseoul.jpg

The trailer to the Hollywood remake of the hit movie My Sassy Girl has been leaked. Judging from the preview, Hollywood has managed to turn the hilarious and charming original into a crap-tacular romantic cheese-fest starring Jesse Bradford and Elisa Cuthburt.

The leading D-list actors alone should be indication enough that this movie will bomb at the box office. Jesse Bradford fails to embody the goofy charisma of Cha Tae Hyun, while Elisa Cuthburt comes off as too edgy and too bipolar.

Asian fans will not be pleased, and American audiences will not be interested. Loyal netizens are already buzzing about how this new version will inevitably pale in comparison to the original. Hollywood needs to quit remaking classics to cover up for their own insipid and uninspired movie plots.

The movie is slated to be released later this year.

Don’t be too surprised if it goes straight to DVD.

Cringe-worthy! I couldn’t even get myself to watch the whole thing.

  2. 2 zukido April 2, 2008 at 11:08 am

americans does make awesome movies, but considering the casts here, i’m not sure whether they can make it this time, the ’sassy girl’ itself is the focal subject, but elisha…~!!?? out of many supertalented girls out there, errrr……..~~!

  3. 3 kprocks89 April 2, 2008 at 11:32 am

oh my… i was looking forward to something more…

  4. 4 yeoreum April 2, 2008 at 11:42 am

  5. 5 stephchan86 April 2, 2008 at 12:03 pm

waaaaaaah~! noooo! why the heck are they remaking it with american actors?o_O,is like noo! if u wanna see my sassy girl then show the korean version I’m sure many people in the US would love it…..besides the main guy is not cute in the korean version XD, sorry nothing personal, but he’s a really good actor ^^v, if u haven’t seen the movie I recomend watch it!!! the korean version! XD

  6. 6 CiiNDY April 2, 2008 at 12:26 pm

lol they shouldve changed the title at least. sounds creepy coming from mr megaphone

isnt he the guy from bring it on? he was cute…

  7. 7 Franny April 2, 2008 at 12:29 pm

In terms of an American remake, I think it looks pretty decent. If I had no idea what the original My Sassy Girl was, I would probably go see it (I’ll probably go see it anyway). But yes, I do agree that they should stop with all the pointless remakes :/

And I don’t think Elisha Cuthbert and Jesse Bradford are necessarily D-list. Elisha Cuthbert is actually pretty big, and Jesse Bradford is too cute and hasn’t done anything degrading enough to be a D-lister, haha.

  8. 8 Jen April 2, 2008 at 12:35 pm

i cant believe theyre doing this x.x wat oyu said is COMPLETELY true! elisa cuthbert seems bipolar in this one. while jun jihyun was totally adorable elisa just seems crazy.

the train scene? they look like idiots x.x jihyun smackin cha taehyun looked real and funny. they tried to make the smackin look cute in the american version while in hte orig. it was another way to showcase jihyun’s uniqueness.

sorry. my sassy girl is a classic they CANT remake. cmon who can copy cha taehyun and jun jihyun? sandra bullock came close but cha taehyun is just awesome.

this is just gonna flop. like how the america remake of tale of two sisters will flop as well

  9. 9 Tony April 2, 2008 at 12:39 pm

WTF…this looks SOOOOOOOOO LAME….acting looks bad too…especially the girl.

  10. 10 Taejus April 2, 2008 at 1:01 pm

aww. judging by its cover already?

    :P

  11. 11 bewise April 2, 2008 at 1:13 pm

don’t use horror remakes as examples, please. The whole point of a horror film is to get you scared as hell, if that worked for you from an american remake (eg.the ring, the grudge…) then it is successful.

the ring, i think, was REALLY SUCCESSFUL…well, for me it was. I slept with the light on for a whole year :P . yep

  12. 13 bewise April 2, 2008 at 1:21 pm

i just think that BOX OFFICE HITS shouldn’t be remade. Its really hard to top the success of the original cuz there are impossible expectations from fans. Theres a reason why STAR WARS weren’t remade, or TITANIC. Because they were so epic, its impossible to transcend the standards.

  13. 14 yo April 2, 2008 at 1:26 pm

American directors need to stay away from korean movies. The lake house was horrible. I don’t think I want to spend my money to see this, after watching the trailer.

  14. 15 aileeee April 2, 2008 at 1:29 pm

i have to admit, the trailer looks pretty good. if it was an original Hollywood creation then i would be impressed, but the fact that they blatantly ripped it off us Asians makes me want to ram a soldering iron down my eyes. it looks so…American now.

  15. 16 oh-noes April 2, 2008 at 1:31 pm

I wonder…how many of these people making comments are american? Do you know american culture enough? I haven’t seen the original movie but from looking at the trailer the main girl seems pretty weird (throwing up on somebody??) and acts like that freaky girl portrayed on some Asian dramas.

and from the American adaptation it seems like she is that weird girl everyone knows that would grow up to have 7 cats…that’s more relatable to me then the korean girl; but I’m just saying that Americanizing a movie isn’t bad it just should be done right… what is bad is when ppl aren’t open to learning about other cultures but that’s another story

    well..wait and see.

  16. 17 Ann*e April 2, 2008 at 1:43 pm

    i don’t see
    credits-korean film

  17. 18 Ann*e April 2, 2008 at 1:44 pm

    oops sorry didn’t finish,
well i wished they gave korea
    some props for actually making
    that movie. >_<

  18. 19 jaejinlover09 April 2, 2008 at 2:11 pm

i didnt even go through halfway on the trailer. i kind of got bored of it. i dont know if american movie goers would spend $10 to watch this movie.

  19. 20 Why? April 2, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Why remake this classic? Hollywood (America) always tries to grab ownership of everything.

  20. 21 AP April 2, 2008 at 2:23 pm

Aish… the trailer of the Korean version of My Sassy Girl wasn’t that great either but the movie was very enjoyable. To be honest, I do agree that the actress in this version lack charisma and this…. yupki personality. We still should give this a try. If I see this movie, I would wait for the credits to see if they DID give credits for the actual movie but I’d rather they put this on the poster: Based on the original Korean version “My Sassy Girl”.

Yeah.. The Lake House remake was dreadful even though the actors had chemistry. Il Mare was much better.

  21. 22 jyyjc April 2, 2008 at 2:23 pm

    don’t forget the lake house…

  22. 23 moshi123 April 2, 2008 at 2:48 pm

hmmm it will be interesting to see how america uses its own culture into the origional Korean film. I must say that I think that it will not be as funny as the Korean version. only because I find the Korean media humor better than American humor.

  23. 24 its_trish April 2, 2008 at 3:25 pm

not paying to see this in theaters.. and not sure if it’s even going to be worth it to watch it online
the lake house case is a MAJOR deterrent

  24. 25 furoke April 2, 2008 at 4:04 pm

    1st time agree with popseoul

    ‘THIS’ version looks sucks.

  25. 26 Lex April 2, 2008 at 4:28 pm

@ Oh- noes: You make me laugh. And yes, i know american culture really well, and i think most (not all) of the people here do too.
But aside from that, the original MSG was actually pretty good (albeit the crappy trailer) but it classic.

And then your saying that people who arent open to other cultures are bad… oh like the ones who made the remake? If they’re open to another culture, i dont see any reason why they dont just show the orignal instead of butchering it inro their remakes. heck, most of them didnt even give credits to the original..

Like I didnt even now Lake house was from Il mare or that Save the last dance was a movie from Japan, and i also found out later that Grudge was a remake from the movie in Japan (until someone told me). I agree with someone here said that… most people who watch the movie doesnt even know its origins– so please kindly tell me, how can a ccountry be recognize… if the remake wouldnt even state that its a remake ? (except for the people who saw the original first)

    Pfbtt recoginition…

  26. 27 R. Kelly April 2, 2008 at 4:51 pm

Yeah, the American Remake looks cheesy, but let’s not fool ourselves. The original was pretty damn cheesy as well.

Anyways, I pretty much avoid rom-coms because they’re almost always by the numbers and because I have a heart of coal.

  27. 28 measuringsummer April 2, 2008 at 5:30 pm

YEAH i strongly agree that hollywood stop making asian remakes! Come on, they’re just trying to take advantage of the fact that these movies were box office hits and maybe by doing a remake, they could gain a profit or something. If they are really that original, stop trying to steal storylines! They seem to be able to make a remake of movies from different asian countries, thai’s shutter, japan’s the grudge, some police movie from hong kong which i cant remember the title and now korea’s sassy girl?! What’s next, taiwan’s lust caution? Seriously… I think no matter how good or bad these remakes are, they can’t compare to the original one.

  28. 29 kayotic April 2, 2008 at 7:06 pm

oh gosh. what did they do.
    idiots.

  29. 30 han April 2, 2008 at 7:07 pm

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO IT KILLS MY ONE, ONLY AND ORIGINAL “MY SASSY GIRL”.THIS TYPE OF PLOT DOESN’T SUIT AMERICAN LIFESTYLE. THE TRAILER IS SO….SAD.THE SLAPPING SCENE IS JUST PLAIN..SUCKS. Perhaps they should learn how to make a good remake like “THE EYE”. I have to admit that the Hollywood adapts asian plots very well and making so many movies better (thanks to the financial funds) but this one is just..HORIBLY STUPID. AND ALSO PLEASE SOMEONE TELL ME THE HIT MOVIE THIS YEAR “JUNO” IS NOT A REMAKE FROM “JENNY AND JUNO”

  30. 31 jicks April 2, 2008 at 7:10 pm

    1. [Amerasian in Daegu] You have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to Asian cinema so pls shut up.

    2. [Girl From Arabia] Just because you missed the point of the movie doesn’t mean it has a “crap” msg. BTW, another grammatical error for you- it’s “WHETHER the movie is Korean” not “weather.” We’re not talking about sunshine & passing showers here.

    3. People need to stop bashing all of Hollywood!! Yeah sure there are alot of Asian remakes lately but let’s not kid ourselves, Asia has their fair share of American rip-offs, too, not just in cinema but in music, too. And seriously, a remake doesn’t destroy the original at all, if anything, it makes it better because you have the comparison factor.

And really, I’m welcoming all these remakes because I like to see how badly some it can be stuffed it up lol

About the trailer… I saw it a couple of weeks ago & EUGH… I’ll give it a go but as many ppl are saying, JJH & CTH’s charisma will be v. hard to top.

    4. And who gives a damn if the original was cheesy. I liked it!

    5. LOL @ Stacy “I’m gonna kill em!!!!”

  31. 32 Filipina April 2, 2008 at 8:10 pm

I don’t think this remake will be better than the original. I know I wouldn’t like it because i’m sick and tired of watching Western movies that are really cheesy, I dunno, but I think one thing I like about Korean movies is that, they add humor and the story is not dragging in my opinion. I also like Korean stars because they all look fresh. ;)
My Sassy Girl is a good movie, but there are movies that are better than this one, i guess?
Since I started watching K-movies, I don’t pay attention to Hollywood movies anymore.
    I like K-dramas too.

Can somebody suggest something for me to watch? I’m about to finish Witch Yoo Hee. ;)

  32. 33 Filipina April 2, 2008 at 8:15 pm

By the way, Hollywood is now filming “The Echo”, it’s a re-make of a Filipino movie “Sigaw”.
    Just to add one. ;)

  33. 34 Filipina April 2, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Hell yeah! Jesse Bradford is the star in “The Echo”. What a coincident. hehe…

  34. 35 Feng April 2, 2008 at 9:25 pm

Damn, is there like no positive views on this movie?

If not, let me be the first.

Firstly, I never thought much of My Sassy Girl. I’ve seen better. But I did enjoy the acting.

Secondly, from what I’ve seen in this trailer, it brought back some nice memories and it does looks quite good. One shouldn’t be so quick to make a judgement and compare it to the original.

Sure the plot may be quite similar but it’s in a different setting involving different actors with different language.

While it may not appeal (who knows), I found the trailer to be amusing especially the piano scene. Brought back the wonderful memories of Canon in D scene. Hope it’s the same.

  35. 36 J April 2, 2008 at 9:36 pm

mawee and the others that are complaining about Hollywood “running out of ideas”:….you guys are kidding, right? Hollywood still has one of the most creative engines in the business–it’s not my fault that you guys are just watching the crappy blockbuster movies. The Korean film industry is WORLDS behind the American one–sorry, but it’s true. From a technical and creative standpoint, anyway. But the Korean one is younger so it still has plenty of time to season.

But calling the American industry stupid just because they decided to remake a lame Korean flick is so, so immature and nationalistic. Really…you sound like whiny elementary school kids. Grow up.

Like others have pointed out–shut up with the complaining about this film being a “rip off” considering MULTITUDES of Korean celebs rip their music off of American music. If you think Korea is so much more original than America…get real.

  36. 37 Thihi-girl April 2, 2008 at 10:45 pm

The american version seem boring. Why can’t they just show the original movie at the cinemas? It doesn’t seem like they’ve used the funniest scenes…

  37. 38 maya April 2, 2008 at 10:48 pm

that’s fresh. insulting someone for having an opinion. a bit hypocritical. aren’t some of you being immature, too, for insulting others–i.e. calling them elementary school children?

these are just opinions. so, why the need to be offensive? dissent, go ahead, but as another person pointed out, to each his/her own. not one’s above another.

i’ll just say it again. everyone copies from each other. sad, but true. and although hollywood still has some creative juices, especially the indie scene, other asian countries, including korea, has an abundance of creative ideas that aren’t solely propelled by big budget special effects. many stories from foreign countries are plot and character-driven (they probably rely on that more because they don’t have a bottomless financial pocket to dip into), and it’s no wonder that at big international film festivals like cannes that those foreign films and actors are noticed more than the american counterparts. no surprise, the stories and the acting are what matter. then again, europeans love dramatic asian cinema.

it’s not a game of who’s been around longer or who’s doing it better. but certainly, we have to give the original forms credit and more exposure. it’s just the idea of exposing the american audience to something different, to other cultures, to let them know that there are other original forms of storytelling out there. it’s just the idea of being exposed to something different and unique—whether it’s the story or a film technique.

  38. 39 vanness77 April 2, 2008 at 10:48 pm

    the remake sucks!!!

  39. 40 kismetology April 2, 2008 at 10:56 pm

The trailer is cringe-worthy at best. It’s bound to fail.

  40. 41 avantgarde April 2, 2008 at 11:25 pm

ill still see it out of curiosity.

at least hollywood is finally seeing the talent in asia.

  41. 42 A Girl From Arabia April 3, 2008 at 12:02 am

    @ A FELLOW AMERICAN

you r nothing but a racist and an ignorant just like most of the Americans are.( how is that?)

some how your hideous replay to me wasn’t a big surprise.

what I wrote about the Americans was kinda like complementting them because I knew that they could do better than that..but some how I was wrong!

I actually should’ve underestimated ur culture like the others did.

I should’ve said: u Americans like to watch crapy movies which are only promoting for pornography and violence.

(how is that? I wont say that because not all the American movies are like that and because I’m not ignotrant)

therefore clearly I’m morally and educationally better than u .. so I dont care about whatever u say about my culture_which the history witness that its far more original than yours_

furthermore ,since u never watched an Arabic movie, so ur comment about the Arabic movies was ponitless.

so from now on your hater comments will be disregarded and underestimated. Dont bother replaying on me on other topics.

    @ vertigo

    thank u..

  42. 43 Linhny April 3, 2008 at 12:32 am

just by looking at this trailer makes me very sick X.x
It looks kinda stupid and the cast ist horrible…u.u
I don’t want to spend my time watching this movie

  43. 44 dana April 3, 2008 at 4:56 am

@a girl from Arabia…though Hollywood remakes of Asian movies truly sucks…I just hope you don’t generalize each and every one of us….don’t you think you’re being racist?morally and educationally better than us?! more original culture?! Then please take world history again, who ruled the world after a hundred years…and who influence the world more than anybody else…and I wonder why you go here for study purposes…

I know this will suck!!!!!I know this will suck so bad that I’m going to hate them……..freak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Just the remake of “Il Mare” is so bad, which is Lake House….

I know they can’t pull of it…HOllywood movies are good enough, their own imaginations are good enough…I just hope they’ll stop doing remakes of great Asian movies because they make it so bad…

  44. 45 christy ky April 3, 2008 at 5:12 am

this movie looks so lame. the original is way better. Elisha cannot play the girl as well as Jun Ji-hyun and Jesse doesnt seem like the right guy to play Gyeon-Woo unlike Cha Tae-Hyun. the original is so wonderful. the remake cant live up to expectations from My Sassy Girl fans.

  45. 46 Nj April 3, 2008 at 5:59 am

Ok i’m not even asian yet i fell insulted…it sucks the way that they just killed a classic movie…what happen to the good old days when hollywood would just make movies based on original ideas..

  46. 47 Jeanny April 3, 2008 at 6:08 am

Omg… they should leave the korean dramas to korea~!
i watched my sassy girl in like 3 days from this site place…lol…
i can tell that the korean version is SOOOO much better. ==

  47. 48 handfulsin ( Movie Geek ) April 3, 2008 at 6:20 am

i think.. this will be more funny as My Sassy Girl(Korean) but the cast mayb i think not worked out as well with like Cha Tae Hyun and Gillian (English name of Jeon Ji Hyun).. hoping this will come out soon.. mayb watching this.. i dun really make a comment from a trailer.. this time i need to watch it bfore comment right? patience mister lol

  48. 49 Girl From Arabia April 3, 2008 at 7:07 am

    @ Dana

yes u r right.. ur country ruled the world but by the guns and the bombs..that how u ruled the world…ur country raised on the blood/oil/mechanism of the other races.

We have once ruled and influenced the world but by education, science and philosophy with an inspiration from the Chinese ,the Indian and the Greek culture.

why don’t u read a bit about the Abbasid dynasty!?

we have a saying that “what rises fast falls fast”.
I wasn’t being a racist..perhaps my average English didn’t serve me well..but believe me I’m beyond racism.. we should’ve gotten over that issue long time ago >_> aish!

and btw I thought being an American is not a race its a nationality.. so don’t be like “u don’t like Americans cause u r racist” its just a matter of policy and moral differences..and plllz don’t start talking about policy.

That will be the end of the discussion..
we don’t want to turn this topic into a battle of who’s the best country and who’s the worst country..ugh

Damn it, thats all because of that ignorant snake FELLOW WHOEVER
Dana ,please don’t move on with his ignorance.

  49. 50 millie April 3, 2008 at 7:53 am

    @ Girl Form Arbia
so…why are you promoting arabia in a korean gossip blog??
how did the american remake of my sassy girl conversation turned into “We have once ruled and influenced the world but by education, science and philosophy with an inspiration from the Chinese ,the Indian and the Greek culture” ???
