Hollywood remakes My Sassy Girl

my-sassy-girl_20080331_popseoul.jpg

The trailer to the Hollywood remake of the hit movie My Sassy Girl has been leaked. Judging from the preview, Hollywood has managed to turn the hilarious and charming original into a crap-tacular romantic cheese-fest starring Jesse Bradford and Elisa Cuthburt.

The leading D-list actors alone should be indication enough that this movie will bomb at the box office. Jesse Bradford fails to embody the goofy charisma of Cha Tae Hyun, while Elisa Cuthburt comes off as too edgy and too bipolar.

Asian fans will not be pleased, and American audiences will not be interested. Loyal netizens are already buzzing about how this new version will inevitably pale in comparison to the original. Hollywood needs to quit remaking classics to cover up for their own insipid and uninspired movie plots.

The movie is slated to be released later this year.

Don’t be too surprised if it goes straight to DVD.

can’t wait! jesse bradford is cute though..

  2. 2 SP April 1, 2008 at 8:16 pm

MY SASSY GIRl shouldn’t be remaked but it was bound to because it’s THAT good! I just hope that the American version does WELL of remaking it!!!

One problem….the cast! I mean, come ON but we’ll see how they act once this comes out. I bet Hollywood will add an explicit scene just because they can and plus, it’s Elisha! Eek! The guys would probably like this? hahaha

  3. 3 OAYB April 1, 2008 at 8:17 pm

omg i can’t wait till it comes out. has anyone else noticed that a lot of american movies are based of off or inspired by asian ones?

  4. 4 blah April 1, 2008 at 8:19 pm

i expected more actually, but looking the trailer i can see it’s not that good.
well, i hope the movie better tho.

  5. 5 yeoreum April 1, 2008 at 8:25 pm

yeah, i was able to watch its trailer and the lead guy wasnt as geeky as Cha Tae Hyun portrayed. and the girl was not too interesting to look at like Jun Ji Hyun.. the pair isnt even interesting to look at… i hope they did not butcher the movie again just like what they did with The Lake House (remake of Il Mare).. i still love Il Mare.. what made the Lake House bearable were the leads keanu and sandra…

  6. 6 Angel4e April 1, 2008 at 8:30 pm

It doesn’t seem like a regular american crap, but it certainly doesn’t seem like a pleasant movie to watch. Dunno why, makes me pretty skeptick :D

  7. 7 carmen April 1, 2008 at 8:31 pm

    cha tae hyun’s way better

  8. 8 Christine April 1, 2008 at 8:31 pm

looks horrible. someone would have to pay ME to watch that. yikes

  9. 9 Girl From Arabia April 1, 2008 at 8:46 pm

I think that most of the Americans would never pay to watch such a pointless movie called “my sassy girl” ..I mean come on 0_o.

What kind of image does that movie represent about women?!!it is kinda old fashioned.. we have gotten over that long time ago >_>

Americans like to watch strong movies that have a great messages to convey.. weather the movie is comedy or romantic or even science fiction, there must be a new and a strong message to convey in a movie.

Moreover I kinda understand why Elisa Cuthburt couldn’t embody the charisma that u talked about..I bet that she knew in her heart that that movie was a peace of crap and she was bigger than that!

Its just pointless..The story is pointless..Weather the movie is Korean or American..the story and the message behind that movie is pointless and degrading for woman.

So damn that movie and whoever did it.

  10. 10 Girl From Arabia April 1, 2008 at 8:49 pm

“that movie was a peace of crap”

    *piece*

  11. 11 Tinybubbles April 1, 2008 at 8:52 pm

Oh noes they dint! I hate Hollywood remakes! They suck! I mean come on, The Ring, The Grudge..and now this? Blech. I won’t watch this crap!

  12. 12 sf April 1, 2008 at 8:53 pm

^ What is the message behind the movie?

  13. 13 ahh.. April 1, 2008 at 8:58 pm

hollywood has become so unoriginal.. seriously.. so now they have to steal ideas from other countries… I think they should just release the originals instead of making new ones that suck!!!

  14. 14 ky April 1, 2008 at 9:04 pm

    ahhh jesus christ.

:( Can’t anyone have original ideas anymore? Can’t people just watch a movie with subtitles for once?

I wish the majority of North America wasn’t so ignorant to the idea that Asian people MAKE MOVIES (OMG! NO WAY!)
aghhh. I won’t be seeing this, and destroying everything I love about the original.

  15. 15 sf April 1, 2008 at 9:06 pm

hmmm, hopefully this movie will stand nicely on its own (instead of being a carbon copy of the original). I’m pleased to see they attempted to adapt some the classic bits (like the slapping game tho I guess they didn’t use soldiers b/c it would be out of context in America) but it appears as tho the significance of the single rose (and by extension the background of the Girl) will not be explored very much. I’d adore it if they kept in the little playacting bits (from the Girl’s plays) ah well, until the movie comes out who knows?

E.C. I think I’m alright with (although I don’t think she conveys enough ’sadness’ but maybe that was the director’s decision) - but gosh, the boy gets on my nerves. He talks too much :P This movie is not going to do well in box offices, no question. But I truly believe it would be due to how chick flicks are not the trend now and the likely omission of cultural (American, since it is an American movie) satire….not necessarily b/c of any fault to the original storyline.

In any case, I don’t think the original MSG would’ve crossed over the American audiences well either. Too many cultural references specific only to people who have experienced Korean culture firsthand. Of all Korean movies to remake I honestly don’t think MSG was a good choice.

  16. 16 tsinita April 1, 2008 at 9:08 pm

i saw the trailer and i think it’s good. maybe not as good as the original but it has something. jesse bradford is cute.

  17. 17 bewise April 1, 2008 at 9:21 pm

SADDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD. Hollywood remakes of Asian box office hits are seriously lame. First it’s the departed, a beautiful subtle sequel crammed into one violent pointless gangfight. Now its this. The girl just doesn’t have that lighthearted cuteness/violent vibe in her, that interchangeable wildness and innocence inherent in Jun Jihyun’s portrayal. *SIGH* o well, lets see wot happens

  18. 18 jn April 1, 2008 at 9:26 pm

are you freaken serious? a remake of my sassy girl =/
god American’s and their remakes of asian movies. there is no way that this version will be as good as the korean one. == just no way. most american remakes sucks ! big time and this prob will too =]

  19. 19 anecia April 1, 2008 at 9:26 pm

TT”’ I bet its gonna be a flop…the main lead girl does’n't have the charisma like the original…and so does that guy…nothing is better then the original

  20. 20 bewise April 1, 2008 at 9:38 pm

^ LOL, unless the original was seriously boring. Take the original KING KONG as an example.

  21. 21 JaeJoong'sCookieMonster April 1, 2008 at 9:44 pm

How lame. Hollywood is soooooo original…

  22. 22 dwilliams April 1, 2008 at 9:44 pm

bewise I could not agree with you more, to HWood come up with something original, you rarely saw Hitchcock copying Capri or Cecil B De Mille copying Hitchcock or Speilberg copying Lucas. To all of the Asian directorrs, producers, writers etc stop letting HWOOD remake your movies. It’s crazy that Departed won an Oscar but Infernal Affairs couldnt even get an honorable mention and everyone knows that IA ran circles around the DEPARTED.

  23. 23 biatch April 1, 2008 at 9:51 pm

OMG!!!!!!!! Judging from the trailer, it’s total murder. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO~ *digs up the classic*

  24. 24 janepak April 1, 2008 at 9:53 pm

well at least they didn’t use britney spears lol i heard they were actually thinking about it.

  25. 25 Nozomi April 1, 2008 at 9:59 pm

i bet it goes straight to DVD, becuase the last good movie Jesse Bradford was in was Hackers. I’ll admit i haven’t seen the original but the original but a majority of the time the original is going to be better than most remakes. I think thats why i stopped watching american sitcoms and switched to korean dramas and movies. Much more original than watching shows rehash the same thing from 20 yrs ago only with a different family.

  26. 26 Ahh April 1, 2008 at 9:59 pm

I think the thing about this movie is it’s not very american… in truth american couples aren’t like that.. so that’s why the american public will not enjoy this movie, love isn’t so innocent.. or atleast most of the time it’s not portrayed in american movies this way. My sassy girl was an awesome movie it’s sad that the remake will not be as enjoyed. I don’t think Elisha Cuhbert should have been casted in that role her acting is very mediocore.. I dind’t even know she was drunk.. hahaha

  27. 27 Da April 1, 2008 at 10:03 pm

somehow I didn’t think the original version of my sassy girl was very good…

  28. 28 Katie April 1, 2008 at 10:29 pm

news: the original was already a cheesy crapfest. i think its hysterical that people are in a huff that this new version is “cheesy” and overdramatic. the first one was SO SILLY! ugh!

  29. 29 lightbug April 1, 2008 at 10:35 pm

american remakes of any asian movie are a total disappointment.. why do a remake? i’d prefer a stolen idea with changes, than a remake..

    *sigh*

  30. 30 for real April 1, 2008 at 10:43 pm

my sassy girl was an okay movie but i never thought it was that great enough to become a remake

  31. 31 nileey April 1, 2008 at 10:57 pm

    I’m so NOT watching this….

  32. 32 chocolatte April 1, 2008 at 11:00 pm

well at least the ‘cha tae hyun’ was handsome :)

  33. 33 coconut April 1, 2008 at 11:03 pm

Hollywood is lame, I never watch their movies anymore.

  34. 34 JC April 1, 2008 at 11:06 pm

This American remake makes me sick to my stomach. But who knows, maybe it will be a hit with teenage girls in the States. All of us will not know until weekend box office results. Judging from the trailer, oh boy they really butchered the original MSG. Elisha Cuthbert doesn’t have that mysterious edge and screen presence like Jeon Ji Hyun. Jesse Bradford is not really a comedic actor like Chae Tae Hyun. I will definitely not watch this movie.. I won’t pay 10 dollars for this piece of crap.

  35. 35 yukiexx April 1, 2008 at 11:10 pm

Eh… Didn’t she throw up on the people in the subway in the Korean version? I really liked that scene. It doesn’t look like they used it in this version though… meh.

  36. 36 FimFim April 1, 2008 at 11:11 pm

    This is old news.

  37. 37 ma_mel03 April 1, 2008 at 11:17 pm

My roomate was freaking out excited when she saw the trailer because she was surprised and happy that they kept so many similar ‘traits’ from the original. I, on the other hand, wasn’t feeling it, at all. It looked cute, but I wouldn’t pay 8 dollars to see it in the theatres if I didn’t know that it was a remake from a popular korean movie. I don’t think it’ll really appeal to americans.

  38. 38 shelshel April 1, 2008 at 11:23 pm

OMG, the original is so much better.
I don’t see the point of re-making it at all!

That trailer was awful and it doesn’t seem as funny as the original…

  39. 39 janey_bei April 1, 2008 at 11:23 pm

how this new version will inevitably pale in comparison to the original —> was it really pale? :P lolz must have been fail. Anyway i like sassy girl the korean version.

  40. 40 riki April 1, 2008 at 11:25 pm

my sassy gir is a classic and should not be touched but you cant be surprised. american directors have always stolen from asian films. the first was the magnificent seven based off the seven samurai by kurosawa back in the fifties. i think they should just bring the orinal movies in america and put it in wide release so everyone can get a chance to experience a great film because not everyone knows of the asian films when they go to dvd. i am not korean or even asian (at least physically) but i never feel confused or disconnected from any film i have seen from asia. i see it as a learning as experience and just go “huh, i didnt know that”. like il mare was sooooo beautiful and although i never saw the lake house just by looking at the trailer and knowing the story i was not interested instead i actually saw il mare because i read that the lake house was a remake of it and saw it before the lake house was released in theatres. not knocking down sandr and keanu but the characters are of different ages and older people approach love much more differently then the young. it is a more pure innocent thing which to me is true love.

im so boycotting any remake of asian films and encourage everyone to see the original. im sure you can get cheaper online versus paying for a movie ticket in america.

  41. 41 channnng April 1, 2008 at 11:28 pm

i mean who knows… it could be not that bad
you can’t judge the movie just by watching the trailer

  42. 42 unknown April 1, 2008 at 11:36 pm

    American being poo

  43. 43 lovingkyuhyunnie April 1, 2008 at 11:37 pm

OMO!!! aaha i guess american been copying asian movie lately…

  44. 44 Juniper April 1, 2008 at 11:54 pm

a drunk blonde. so original! i hate this version!

  45. 45 Omo April 2, 2008 at 12:08 am

This would be less embarrassing if the two leads are Korean and it was set in Seoul. Oh, wait…

  46. 46 sky April 2, 2008 at 12:15 am

nothing will ever beat the original my sassy girl and i don’t really feel inclined to watch the american remake because usually they suck!! i wish they would put out something original that is genuinely interesting

  47. 47 Jackie April 2, 2008 at 12:17 am

it looked worse than i imagined

  48. 48 Stacy April 2, 2008 at 12:25 am

    I’m gonna kill em!!!!

  49. 49 unknown April 2, 2008 at 12:29 am

the american version isnt going to be as good as the orginial one

  50. 50 kanZENmuketsu April 2, 2008 at 12:29 am

    Bad people COPY…IDEAS that
do run out from TIME to TIME.

    I usually don’t have a PENCHANT
    for seeing WHITE casts played
in a YELLOW story. But I cannot
BASH Hollywood for doing so. Yet
I am selective in the originality
    being INTACT.

I just hope that the Razzies
Award does not BEFALL on such
a great movie like the ORIGINAL
    K-version of “My Sassy Girl.”

  51. 51 kk89 April 2, 2008 at 12:30 am

I swear this is so true though… everything is being remade and americans are getting credit for it it’s so annoying!!! movies like shutter that just came out is originally a thai film…. the departed…. grudge… the ring….!!! oh yeah and the lake house(although it’s pretty good)!

  52. 52 miny April 2, 2008 at 12:32 am

lol. i have actually always been REALLY mad about remakes…
    still am…
but i can only say, after seeing the trailer, THIS IS A COMPLETE DIFFERENT MOVIE LOLOLOLOL.
i really really think they shouldnt have used the title.
    maaaaaaaaaaan.
    ok, bla.
i am just going to sit in my chair, stroke my cat and laugh about hollywood.
and maybe kill some of them afterwards.
    purrrrr~.

i cant get over how completely different this is and how completely different every remake was/is/will be.
korean films just dont work without… korea.
    LOL
already polishing my gun for charlize theron…

  53. 53 immesowat April 2, 2008 at 12:32 am

i regret watching that stupid trailer lolzz….like its telling u what the movie is about in the most detail way ever lmao..and heck wtf is happening to hollywood…when all those scenes look exactly like in the original one..!!
    Sucha genius !

  54. 54 Blahblahbon April 2, 2008 at 12:52 am

    Oh god, it’s been americanized..
    I will never watch that.

  55. 55 haj April 2, 2008 at 1:31 am

    wow so cheesy…
    im disappointed.

  56. 56 tewkewl April 2, 2008 at 1:42 am

it actually looks great for an american remake. come on guys… “shall we dance”??? it’s 10 times better than that looked. at least the premise is timeless. shall we dance only works for the japanese society, because ballroom dancing was taboo for salary men. doesn’t work in the US.

But i wonder if they are going to have the ending scene with the flying saucer and the line “i’ve seen the future you”. they allude to it when elisha cuthbert says she thinks there are people from the future amongst us.

I want to see it just to check it out. of course nothing can replace the original. jun ji hyun is soooo pretty …

  57. 57 fuhgeddaboutit April 2, 2008 at 1:46 am

    same movie title
    same story lines
but played by two different races

    so what’s the problem here.

    you wanna expose foreign films
    internationally?
    HOLLYWOOD is your door.

    anti-Yankee sentiment
will no doubt inundate this post.

  58. 58 Ting April 2, 2008 at 1:46 am

I think Hollywood have been remaking alot of Asian Movies. For example, the Ring, the Grudge, Shutter, Dark Water..and now My Sassy Girl. -_-

  59. 59 Blahblahbon April 2, 2008 at 2:01 am

It’s different, Asians know how to make it cute and hilarious, Americans focus too much on sex and drugs for my taste. It’ll be a crude movie more than a cute one, that’s just how american movies are. It’s gotten old, I can only watch so much crap. If they were as good as Asian movies/dramas, I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy K-dramas over the internet.

  60. 60 suga April 2, 2008 at 2:10 am

it doesnt even look like the original movie, if the movie title’s different it can be another cheesy romantic comedy

  61. 61 Brina April 2, 2008 at 2:12 am

What American (who isn’t into Asian stuff) is going to pay to see a movie called “My Sassy Girl”?

LMAO. Well, I would but I like Korean movies.

The trailer looks stupid and I don’t like Elisha.

  62. 62 Louise April 2, 2008 at 2:12 am

Oh my god, what have they done to this fantastic movie?
    Damn hollywood and their remakes.

  63. 63 Mics April 2, 2008 at 2:19 am

Jeon Ji Hyun immediately caught my attention the first time she comes on screen on the original. I just didn’t feel that here with Elisa.

  64. 64 junsu(DBSK)fan April 2, 2008 at 2:30 am

    nothing beats the original. :/

  65. 65 brian April 2, 2008 at 2:38 am

hollywood has NOT become unoriginal, it still remains the most creative in the world…

this is just an example of ONE director who is taking ideas from foreign countries… there are a lot more recently, but overall, the best movies are definitely still originally hollywood

hollywood is so much more original and creative than the korean movie scene still, and to make judgmements like popseoul did is unprofessional and nationalistic

  66. 66 김태신KoreanTommy April 2, 2008 at 2:42 am

Damn you Hollywood, why do you have to Ruin a Classic K-Movie. With (what i ‘m sure is gonna be Garbage).

    -태신

  67. 67 Shirinii April 2, 2008 at 2:45 am

I really don’t like this idea. Whe do Americans have to remake Asian movies, when they know it’s never gonna be as good as the original. BTW I also read somewhere that Americans are gonna remake ‘A tale of two Sister’ that’s my favourite Korean movie. I hope that one’s not gonna suck either.

  68. 68 evercool April 2, 2008 at 2:53 am

what are you ppl talking about asians copy from americans all the time and i do mean all the time but the minute we americans do it we’re unoriginal? ya’ll should be happy this movie is even being made in hollywood.

btw, this movie loks really good. i’ll watch it.

  69. 69 ..... April 2, 2008 at 2:54 am

lol, like korea doesn’t have uninspired film plots.

  70. 70 asianromance April 2, 2008 at 3:05 am

looks better than I would have imagined but that doesn’t mean i will shell out money to watch it. Don’t the director and producer know that romantic comedies aren’t in vogue now. And moreover, Americans don’t like to see simple stories with hidden depths like this one. They like constant excitement and twists and turns. And as a movie where the guy gets pushed and slapped around by a crazy girl- not many Americans want to see that…

I am curious to see how they will pull this off and I know the trailer isn’t everything- since there have been movies I was excited abt from watching the trailers which turned out horrible when I watched the entire thing- so maybe I’ll check it out when it comes out on DVD.

  71. 71 yearight April 2, 2008 at 3:09 am

Watch it first before you complain, okay?! Hahaha. Anyways highways, I hope the lead stars watched the original and hopefully they give justice to what Gianna and Cha Tae Hyun worked hard for.. I hope!

  72. 72 asianromance April 2, 2008 at 3:13 am

one more thing: doesn’t remaking this movie bring more money to the producers and the actors of the original cuz Hollywood bought the rights? So you can say that the it’s a win-win situation for the original because 1. they will get more money from a movie done 7 years ago which is always nice and 2. people might become interested in the original or even in the korean movie industry because so many movies from Korea are being remade here. And it’s a risky situation for the remake because they already spent all this money buying the rights and filming it and they can only pray it makes enough money to cover the costs. I feel a bit bad for the director/producer who are probably fans of the original (seems like they kept a lot of elements) and want to remake so that american-who are too lazy to read subtitles- audiences can see it too, but it will most likely be unsuccessful

  73. 73 yeli April 2, 2008 at 3:19 am

what a load of crap! the acting sucks! lol…

  74. 74 Jane. April 2, 2008 at 3:45 am

It’ll never be better then the original..
Though “Juno” that was based on the korean movie called “Jenny Juno” was better.

  75. 75 hannah April 2, 2008 at 3:48 am

the original is always the best

  76. 76 Not Really April 2, 2008 at 3:51 am

I’ve seen the original and I have to agree- this is going straight to DVD. These are not even D-List actors. No one knows who they are, nor will they care. What a waste…

  77. 77 khitee April 2, 2008 at 3:54 am

Id still go to the original My Sassy Girl. But of course i would love to see this remake if it is really good or not. ü What ever it may come out.

  78. 78 DotDotDot April 2, 2008 at 4:08 am

I didn’t laugh once…I don’t think it’s crazy enough. The actors are so-so. The girl just seems like someone who is trying too hard to be weird because she has this notion that being weird is trendy cool. Maybe it’s a cultural thing because I don’t necessarily like all American humor in film, and I agree I don’t like the crudeness. Something about it reminds me of a 1990’s cheesy film. Thumbs down man.

  79. 79 yinG April 2, 2008 at 4:12 am

the girl just looks like she’s skitz and has some multi personality problems in here.. T_T… they lost so many of the jokes from the first one through culture barriers.. its not even funny!!!! T_T…

  80. 80 Margaret April 2, 2008 at 4:13 am

no one can TOP the original! what made the original sassy girl a great movie was because of the plot and the natural [funninest] of Cha tae hyun and jun ji hyun.

  81. 81 BKJSuh April 2, 2008 at 4:14 am

    EPIC FAIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  82. 82 APRIL April 2, 2008 at 4:15 am

why does Hollywood always think they can do it better? blah!

  83. 83 Visiting April 2, 2008 at 4:20 am

Wow! I visit this website and read the comments, it seems as if you have ill will towards anything that is different. Be my guest…stay in your boxed little world. If Hollywood is such crap….Why is it that all of your actors and singers want to go to Hollywood? By the way we don’t need you here and we don’t need your movies. Our industry is just fine.

  84. 84 kanZENmuketsu April 2, 2008 at 4:22 am

The remake thereof is judged so HARSHLY
based on WATCHING its trailer alone.

BUT the CONSENSUS among the comments
    posted thus far…wow
    perhaps a grisly RENDITION
    of an OSCAR-winning
movie,”There Will Be Blood,” could be used to
DUB this US-REMAKE of “My Sassy Girl” as…..

    DRUMS roll please,
    the envelope opens and reads:
    “Theirs Will Be Crap”

  85. 85 Ktie April 2, 2008 at 4:27 am

Yes everything you said and more. I usually hate any hollywood remakes anyway, but didn’t think it’d be as bad as you said until I saw the trailer and oh my god. The actors really don’t portray any fun, crazy characteristics from the originals so what’s the point of it? Also, what about that crazy train scene where she’s all drunk and scary, and vomitts on him? That was one of the most memorable scenes from the original for me and without it.. not so funny.

  86. 86 Alex April 2, 2008 at 4:45 am

    Please… no _^_”’
Hollywood should start to get own ideas =.= Ring, Grudge, Shooter… isn’t that enough?

  87. 87 Lex April 2, 2008 at 4:45 am

@ Visitor: if your industry is so fine, then tell them to stop making stupid crappy remakes! And be original.

Besides. I never liked Hollywood in the first place. Whoever said they were good?

Besides our Actors aren’t really aiming for hollywood, but for international fame. Being in hollywood is just like a stepping stone. So don’t delude yourself…

X.X they just butchered MSG -like they butchered The ringe and grudge- x.x *walks aways and starts cussing*

I was actually kinda excited when I heard the movie was going to be remade…

Now looking at the trailer, I regret ever being excited. It looks NOTHING like the My Sassy Girl I know and love.

  91. 91 DaiLo April 2, 2008 at 5:07 am

The slapping scene from the original was one of the funniest scenes from the movie. But looking at this trailer seems like they ruined it, doesn’t seem funny at all ~_~

  92. 92 Omo April 2, 2008 at 5:16 am

As I see it, the Hollywood version doesn’t work simply due to the fact that the zany humor and charm of the original My Sassy Girl was entirely cultural.

  93. 93 Omo April 2, 2008 at 5:17 am

  94. 94 Raven April 2, 2008 at 5:19 am

Honestly…it was better in Korean. Americans wouldn’t have much interest or even understand this movie.

  95. 95 arainyday April 2, 2008 at 5:20 am

And I have a feeling this one will bomb just like their remake of Il Mare. It just doesn’t have the same charm or quirky-ness of the original film. I’ll go see it anyways, just to see how bad it really is.

  96. 96 Raven April 2, 2008 at 5:20 am

“that the zany humor and charm of the original My Sassy Girl was entirely cultural.”

I agree with you Omo. That;s what I was trying to say when I said Americans wouldn’t understand the movie, especially since it’s being remade to fit American culture…

  97. 97 Brina April 2, 2008 at 5:28 am

    @Jane:

Juno apparently wasn’t a remake of Jenny,Juno. They almost were totally different minus the pregnant teen and her boyfriend situation. If you check out Juno’s wiki, the creater said she had never even seen Jenny, Juno.

  98. 98 cassie. April 2, 2008 at 5:31 am

Hollywood’s remakes of Asian films are rarely amazing, so I’m not expecting anything. Why do they always ruin the original?

Ugh, they’d be a lot better off showing the Asian originals. I think the humor in My Sassy Girl is completely understandable to Koreans themselves, but may come off as weird and not normal to Americans.

Hollywood should get a gold star for destroying good movies.

  99. 99 sowhat April 2, 2008 at 5:44 am

What Omo said is right. The difference is completely cultural, which means that any Hollywood remake will have to somehow translate the differences into a “western” way of thinking. Ok, IMHO, this remake can still work out well only if the characters can somehow create a touching yet sarcastic emotional bond amongst each other. Acting and screenplay must complement the flow of the story. We’ll see I guess.

Btw, I’m probably the only one here who thought the Ring was an excellent remake, with really good performance from Naomi Watts. Also, The Departed(Infernal Affairs) was well done because of A-list actors, award winning screenplay writers, and a legendary director.

    re Girl from Arabia

this one should keep her idiotic thoughts to herself.
she just called the movie stupid? with a pointless story line? Americans like to watch what? and all this crap about strong what? excuse me…little girl from ARABIA. you should take a good look at your own culture before you go ahead and call a blockbuster from the REPUBLIC OF KOREA pointless. when was the last time an arabic movie made some profound impact on the liberties of women of the world? hmmm…..like NEVER!!!!

i’m not saying this remake is going to be great. and i probably will not watch it- mainly because i never liked the original but people like the little “girl from ARABIA” needs to keep herself in check and STOP declaring what Americans will like to see and not see especially since she calls herself the “Girl From Arabia.” Trust me, there’s no way in hell (geographically/culturally/traditionally) will she ever be able to speak for the American people. EVER!

lets all be civil about this.
ITS BEEN MADE, so deal with it

  116. 116 Sammystic April 2, 2008 at 7:31 am

I think it’s better to let people watch the korean version (maybe dubbed) instead of changing it so much that the charm of the original is totally lost.
You won’t loose anything by watching a foreign movie once in a while!

The maingirl in the new version does not seem different from “normal” girls, just very happy-go-lucky. There have already been many movies/stories with girls like that, it’s nothing new.
I loved how the girl in the korean movie was very dominant, a bit crazy and mysterious.

If you decide to do a remake it should be way better than the original, too bad this one is not.

  117. 117 vertigo April 2, 2008 at 7:35 am

    @A FELLOW AMERICAN
lets not get carried away with racism here… you should try to watch some arabic movies, they are actually good..

    back at the movie

Suckywood that`s what happens when you won`t pay your screenwritters what they deserve, they bring you CRAP!!! this approach is wrong, and they remade the wrong movie…and they got the wrong, oh so wrong actors… did they even see the original movie?? the slap scene preview was horrible.. the original one was something of a masterpiece… they failed to capture the essence of the original, and thats pointless really…it almost looks like a different movie, with a lot of stolen scenes…

hollywood annoys the shi”t outta me with their remakes.. they need to focus on hiring subbers… do they need any?? cuz youtube is filled with them…바보 … yeah that means “Fool” you morons…

  118. 118 Kuki April 2, 2008 at 7:42 am

That looks like a terrible remake. Extremely cheesy, if they wanted to remake it they should have made it exactly the same, but they changed it so much but gave it the same name. I’m disappointed…

  119. 119 Matthew April 2, 2008 at 7:45 am

First of all, I don’t think a movie can be judged by its trailer. How many comedy movies seemed hilarious by the trailers, but when you watched the real thing, it wasn’t that funny?

That said, even if the trailer sucked, I wouldn’t mind watching it to be sure, since it’s an interesting story. However, this trailer isn’t really bad, IMO. Elisha Cuthbert may not be the best actress, but she has always had either the annoying girl role (like Kim Bauer) or the sexy slutty girl. This character is different from the ones she has done before, so I expect her to show she’s worth.

Jesse Bradford… oh well, I didn’t watch many of his movies, and pretty much all the ones I watched were silly teenage movies, so I can’t comment much on him.

Finally, even if this movie sucks, it’s still good for Korea that it has been remaked. There will be people interested in watching the original, just like watching Lake House made me go dig Siworae (which, by the way, became one of my favourite movies). This year, Tale of Two Sisters will also have a remake, so it’s three Korean movies in less than 3 years. This all can get some people interested in Korean movies, so it should be a good thing.

  120. 120 jrizzle April 2, 2008 at 7:45 am

OHMYGOD the movie was already horrible to begin with…now they’re going to butcher what’s already tattered to pieces!this looks like a failure soon to come……. KEKE

  121. 121 fuhgeddaboutit April 2, 2008 at 7:48 am

    c’mon you people

It’s only a MOVIE for goodness sake. I never knew that Tinseltown, cognizant of cultural differences, would open
to a diplomatic confrontation. The language of many cultures
    is universal.

If the remake flops at the box office,
    lessons learned and move on.
If it were a success, however, then we could steal some more like “My Wife is a Gangster” (조폭 마누라),
“My Lovely Sam Soon” (내 이름은 김삼순),
or one of my favorites, “I am Sam” (아이엠샘)

    he he he

  122. 122 Jusitn April 2, 2008 at 8:05 am

WOW that looked terrible, compared to the korean one jeez bad idea to remake like the korean one was the best! WOw i just can’t believe i just saw that

  123. 123 Alysia April 2, 2008 at 8:30 am

I think the trailer was horrible. I couldn’t watch the whole thing; it was insanely boring IMO. Yes, I’m a fan of My Sassy Girl, but I usually don’t mind American remakes. But this…

It’s NOT going to be as funny because of all the cultural references that the Korean one originally made. And the slap scene looks atrocious. Its not as funny when they have them slapping each other. It completely skips over the funny expressions that the male lead has to make when he realizes his bad luck. I don’t dislike Elisha, but she really does not grasp the character at all. She’s supposed to be crazy, yes, but she’s approaching it in a totally odd manner. She’s more mentally unstable than anything else. JJH did a WONDERFUL job as the girl. And she’s more striking. The guy is… too level headed to be Cha Tae Yeon.

I don’t really watch movies all that often, and I definitely will not be watching this.

BTW- those who made comments that My Sassy Girl was originally pointless and stupid. I personally think that a lot of American comedies are pointless and stupid, with all the sexual humor and crap they throw in. Not saying its all like that… there ARE some great comedies out there.

  124. 124 Love-Peace-Music April 2, 2008 at 8:41 am

  125. 125 leelee April 2, 2008 at 8:45 am

Some of you are so narrow-minded.

If you thought the trailer wasn’t very appealing, then fine. But don’t go calling Hollywood unoriginal. You DO realize that Korean singers do remakes of American songs frequently? I don’t see you calling your idols “unoriginial”.

You should be glad that Korean movies are finally getting noticed, especially since a good number of Korean stars are trying to make it big HERE IN THE USA.

  126. 126 leelee April 2, 2008 at 8:46 am

Damn. Unoriginal in my old post is really supposed to mean “original or uncreative”.

  127. 127 tyche April 2, 2008 at 8:46 am

i’m not into Hollywood remakes too and a remake of THE My Sassy Girl is almost impossible to do but (if i’m not mistaken) Yann Samuel directed this one so at least we should give it a try first. He did great with Jeux D’ Enfants.

hollywood adapts from asian cinema. on the goodside, i think that proves that asian cinema is really good. not just good, but very.

  132. 132 Neela April 2, 2008 at 9:12 am

To each his/her own. Obviously, people have different opinions, and not one is above another. They are just opinions, so, no need for name-calling or insults.

Personally, I prefer the original, and even though it is from the director of “Love Me if You Dare,” I don’t want to see this version. I enjoyed the original a lot, and I’m afraid the American remake just doesn’t cut it, at least for me. I’m not keen on the actors. Maybe if they could have found others who have more oomph (acting wise), then, the appeal might be better. And yes, just based on the trailer, the story seems just like any other generic Hollywood rom-com. But that’s just my take, so, don’t go pelting me for my opinion.

Also, I’m all for the exposure of foreign films–in all their original form–to western countries, especially the USA. When any foreign film is remade in America, it doesn’t always mean that the foreign nation or its actors are receiving credit or notice. I’m sure not a lot of Americans are aware that The Departed is Internal Affairs or that the Lake House is Il Mare or that even Shall We Dance is from Japan.

  133. 133 lalala April 2, 2008 at 9:13 am

    wait, really?
these people made this SOLELY based on (copying) from the actual Korean movie with Jeon Ji Hyun??
(the piano part and the slapping game etc. are exactly like the one from the korean movie..)

woa! that’s kind of a big deal?? since when did Americans copy Korean movies.. haha but yeah, i agree with everyone that nothing will beat the original.

Jeon Ji Hyun and Cha Tae Yeon were amazing.

  134. 134 maya April 2, 2008 at 9:17 am

the slapping game is not the same at all. the piano part is really close though. some aspects would have to be reinterpreted or westernized; some aspects of korean culture just wouldn’t translate as well with american audiences.

  135. 135 denise April 2, 2008 at 9:19 am

    good points vertigo

the remake did a good job in copying the scenes. thats it.
i dont think its the actors’ fault; they would not be able to find any american actors who would be able to act like the original. they’re just not korean

the american girl just makes her weirdness seem awkward immature. the korean girl seemed sweet and strong. thats just the cultural difference, i guess

the korean boy was able to complement with her crazy behavior, though. esp since he was a little weird himself. they worked it, so it wasnt just some cheesy shallow story, but had some meaning and depth with its irony and circular story.

i doubt this remake can pull that off

    good try though, i guess

  136. 136 fi0naLee April 2, 2008 at 9:35 am

ahhh, i just know that this remake will be a big disappoinment. nothing will beat the original!

Haha! “The girl your mother warned you about.”

  138. 138 Laura April 2, 2008 at 9:41 am

I don’t think I will enjoy the remake as much as the original because I looooved the original, but I’m still going to see it in theaters. As mentioned before, it’s at least a chance for exposure to the Korean cinema and if it’ll pique somebody’s interest and get them to find out more about Korean entertainment, why not?

And y’know, I don’t think it’s fair to be calling Hollywood unoriginal when all of this remaking happens everywhere, not just America. Korea has done it, too.

So in the end, this movie might end up being crap, but I’m going to give it a shot and hey, if it’s a cheesy rom-com, I’ll try to enjoy it anyway!

  139. 139 Kiwi April 2, 2008 at 9:47 am

  140. 140 Amerasian in Daegu April 2, 2008 at 9:48 am

  141. 141 E April 2, 2008 at 9:53 am

The movie doesn’t honestly seem that bad. It seems pretty good, actually. Nothing can top the original, for sure. It’s a remake, enough said. Why should it matter so much?

  142. 142 salsasian April 2, 2008 at 9:57 am

Really trying not to “hate” here, but this just kind of doesn’t make sense. I know they’ve made a valiant attempt, but the kind of asian-girl craziness just doesn’t translate. It simple isn’t cute when a Caucasian girl tries to fill the role or at least this girl. And the guy in the remake just doesn’t appear dopey…he seems more stoned and clueless.

  143. 143 maya April 2, 2008 at 10:07 am

    @ amerisian in daegu,

classics from korea: old boy, sympathy for lady vengeance, 3-iron, etc.

other asian classics: kurosawa films (i.e. seven samurai), lust, caution, house of flying daggers, battle royale, shall we dance, etc.

there are plenty, PLENTY of asian classics, Kurosawa films are especially up there. those ones i mentioned are just a few. we haven’t even covered other asian countries.

there are plenty of classic films from all over the world, not just in hollywood or in asia. some of you need to get off the high horse.

and yes, all countries copy from each other. sheesh. but to echo others’ sentiments, nothing beats an original. at least when people see the foreign original, they are also exposed to a part of that country’s culture, instead of the westernized version.

  144. 144 hanie April 2, 2008 at 10:17 am

  146. 146 yeoreum April 2, 2008 at 10:29 am

someone commented you cant judge a movie by its trailer but history has it that hollywood didnt do justice to the original ASIAN movies it remade….

one thing more, most Asian movie producers and script writers infuse the Asian values and cultures in everything they do…

My Sassy Girl portrays an asian man and an asian woman… that’s why the original really touched the heart of many asians…

i just wonder, in the remake will they be drinking SOJU? kekekeke….

i really hope they didnt butcher this beautiful ASIAN movie….
