Rain gives an absolutely cringe-worthy interview in English for Movieweb at Comiccon in San Diego this past week. Watching the awkward interview, all I wanted to do was press the stop button after I heard his “…ahhhhh hahahaha…yes..” (which was the first thing that came out of Rain’s incoherent mouth). But for the sake of writing up a post, I had to listen to this entire painful interview 2 times. Luckily, my excellent English listening skills spared me another run through.
Rain just proves that he is not ready to enter big league Hollywood. The man cannot speak English and has NO idea what the interviewer asked him. Personally, I cannot stand it when Korean people think they HAVE to speak English when they go abroad. Don’t they know they are making complete idiots of themselves and everyone in Korea? Why don’t these people just get a &*(*U& interpreter so they can at least provide slightly intelligent answers. Being forced to listen to Rain’s incomprehensible responses has given me indigestion.
But worse, because of him, I am embarrassed to be Korean.
Check out the interview at Movieweb.com. Or if you want to spare yourself from poking out your eye with a spoon, I suggest that you read the transcript below. Granted, the interviewer did ask some stupid questions, but, if you want to be a star, you have to know how to handle the press.
Interviewer: I gotta know- is one of your favorite things standing topless in the “rain”?
Rain: Ahhh hahaha…uh…yes…blahblah (what did he say?)…everyday..naked in my house… haha just kidding. (what the hell was that?)
Interviewer: We see some pretty wicked weapons…what are you going to do with that….
Rain: That’s my girlfriend. (Rain points to the 2 swords in the poster) That’s my first girlfriend. That’s my second girlfriend. (again. what the hell was that?)
Interviewer: ….is the soul of your dead girlfriend in that weapon?
Rain: I…I….you know…just kidding (cringe!)
Interviewer: ….I heard you can’t get over your dead girlfriend…
Rain: I don’t have girlfriend.. real girlfriend, you know. (yes, we know- just answer the question!)
(Interviewer tries to help him out)
Interviewer: In the movie, you have a girlfriend, she dies right?
Rain: ahhhh yes (nod)… ya-su…(nod) …ya-su…
Interviewer: This brings up an interesting question about sex-what does the ninja do when his girlfriends are weapons like that?
Rain: ….huuhuu… no….. don’t do it again please (HUH? - can someone poke my eye now now? )
Interviewer: Just teasing ya. So what kind of training did you have to do to get into this role?
Rain: in the movie right? (obviously rehearsed)
Interviewer: …asking you movie questions…your girlfriend in the movie is dead, not in real life….I’m sorry if there is …
Rain: I’ve been training for 6 months… you know….from the moment.. I’ve been…ahhhh…punching (?) my mind and menu with chicken breasts and vegetables… it was almost killed me…. it’s horrible… (chicken breasts and vegetables almost killed him? What an interesting phenomenon that would be)
Interviewer (speechless)…opps sorry. Did you get to wear a traditional ninja outfit in the film?
Rain: yes. yep…ah… it was … fantastic (rehearsed at least 1000 times)..maybe if you see the movie… you will figure it out (figure WHAT out? ? that he can’t speak English?)
Interviewer: (pause) Thank you so much.
Safely back home, Rain held his “Summer Vacation with Rain” fan meeting with 3000 adoring fans at Jamsil Olympic Hall at 3pm on July 27th 2008.
(Shouts to T for the tip!)
first
oh my god thats just horrible
i mean sad wtf with the chicken breasts and vegetables
cant they just realize that a translator would be better for their image and the image of all Koreans out there?!?!?!
…i’m speechless. really. come on!!
is that the best he can do?!? what…he spent how many years working on his english and he can’t answer some simple questions???
That interview was horrible! Rain must not be that serious about learning english if after 3 years this is what he sounds like…or possibly he has a learning disability?…there is no other logical explanation.
With all the money he has, he can afford first rate tutors…this is ridiculous…
is rain kidding me thats so embarrassing like that was not funny at all. I am like ashamed to be korean because of rain jeez that was like the worst case scenario it could not have gone any worse
Oh god i watched the link….i was cringing so much my whole neck’s sore….what the heck was he thinking?
ah~~~~rain~but what can you expect! lol
His english is bad but so what? It’s not like when you first started speaking English you were perfect. Some things he might have said might not make sense but so what? He’s just trying to get through the interview. But PUH-LEASE! You think you’re all smart and everything! He’s not the only Korean in the Hollywood industry that can’t speak English as perfect as you! Haaaayyyy…. You’re so dang conceited! Man…. I hate people like you!
Yeah, the interview is not good. But give me a break, you all act like english is the easiest language to learn and it isn’t. Learning a new language is not an easy thing to do. Also, the interviewer asked a lot of stupid questions. And yes, I am a fan of Rain so I am defending his efforts.
that was so humiliating! eew! piece of advise to rain surround yourself with people who can speak english fluently. that is the only way you can learn the nuances of the language. so that you will be able to know if the the person is joking or not. and please stop starting a sentence and finishing it with “you know”!
I’m sorry, but as much as I like him, that is just horrible. He really should use a translator. He was not even close to the correct subject most of the time. If he seriously wants to make it in Hollywood he’s going to have to learn English properly or use a translator. And Sar, no need to get offended, it’s just the truth, he will not succeed in Hollywood if he keeps going on this way. It has nothing to do with whether or not we think we are smart, he simply has to improve his understanding of English. What if his movie is successful and he has to do the talk show circuit and many interviews? If this is his level of understanding he will be eaten alive. It’s not as much as a criticism of him, and more of a reality of the situation he’s in. Anyway, I hope he improves fairly soon or hire a translator.
cringe worthy indeed. -.-
that is the most painful interview I’ve ever witnessed in my entire life O_O
P-A-I-N-F-U-L
not only does it seem like he can’t speak english… he sounds like an idiot
yikes… fowl indeed
omg shut up Rain’s fans!!!there can be no fuccking explantion for his inability to master communication-level English. And he has been learning English for 3 years. You gotta be kidding me!!!! It is a shame, not only for Koreans, but for all Asians. I could not finish watching the interview because it was so disgraceful!! Go back to Korea, RIGHT NOW!! All the Asian artists who cannot speak decent English!! RIGHT NOW!!
WOW. I feel sorry for the dude.
I honestly think the problem is more of not being able to put what he wants to say into words and such. I think he understands the Interviewer fine.
ohhh myyyy gaaaaah. I love rain but sweet mercy that was sooo bad. Freaking fans who are like “his english has improved” must be on crack. I need to go slam my head against the wall to forget this interview.
how many producers did he have to blow, to land a starring job w/ this level of communication skills?
forget his english..what’s up with his hair?
“embarrassed to be Korean”? Puleeze.
Rather than dissing Rain’s command of the English language (or lack thereof), you should be working on your transcription skills. You captured none of the nuances in the interviewer’s questions. And the snide remarks after each of Rain’s replies are totally unnecessary (and immature).
oh.my.gosh.
poor guy
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
OMG, this was just TOO funny
especially popseoul’s translation/version of the interview. LOLLLLLLLLLL~
AHAHAHA
LOL
what an idiot xDDD
Se7en sooo owns him xD
You’re embarrassed to be Korean because Rain can’t tackle the most difficult language to learn in the world? It’s common knowledge that English is difficult for foreign speakers to master. At least he’s trying instead of hiding behind a translator every time he finds an opportunity to practice. I’d be more ashamed to be Korean on account of the ridiculous antics of rabid Elves and Cassiopeians instead.
And I thought the interview was funny. The interviewer was obviously joking around practically the entire time; Rain seemed to understand what was going on, but struggled to respond, especially to such bizarre questions.
I read the transcript instead of watching the actual video, and it’s still cringe worthy beyond belief. I think I would bash my head against my keyboard if I watched the interview.
hahahah Poor guy! Atleast he’s trying!
Lmao…
@asiaremix
I (kinda) like se7en and Rain equally, but I must agree that se7en sounds better when he speaks english.
OMFG what was that it was so horrible… dude he’s an embarrassment….. after all that english training wthat the hell happened.. se7en IS SO WAY BETTER.. rofl i think rain should just leave and never appear again.. i never liked rain hahaha no hate though just never really liked but i respect him
Well…
Honestly, like some others already said, the most ridiculous part isn’t about his English but about his hair!
Come on Rain, how can you possibly not see that you’re fucking ugly with that mushroom on you head! That shocks me the most!
About his understanding of English, well, as far as I’m concerned, I’m a French speaker so I can understand that in front of native English speakers you lost your words. That’s what we call being shy… Especially when there are cameras too. Besides you all must remember English and Korean (and most of Asian languages in fact) are completly different, in terms of structures. But the only way to deal with it is to practise, indeed. I think the biggest problem of Rain is that he probably doesn’t speak a word of English in everyday life. And maybe even his professors aren’t native English speakers.
Well, that’s not so important, anyway. Get rid of this haircut or I’ll have to throw your CD’s away… I cannot watch you face anymore, it gives me nausea thinking I found you sexy in the past >o<!
the interviewer asked some weird questions… 0.0
but yeah… rain… hmmm, he does need to improve on his english.
but then again, english isn’t the easiest language to learn.
lol.
he’s got a lot of work ahead of him if he wants to make it in the biz.
i’m thinking he felt more comfortable to have a translator by his side but his management in the US or his PR people for ninja assassin made him do interviews on his own.
love the new haircut at least.
He need to feel more confortable with his english, because this is to painful to watch o.O, im getting more nervious then him T.T and my english is not good OMG!!!
now you know why Rain is not really such a cool and hot guy….what is beauty if brain is empty….just my two cent..
In my opinion, at least it’s good that he tried. Using a translator is kind of a cop out. I think he really has worked hard at learning English, and honestly, it is a difficult language to learn. Give the guy a break, it’s not exactly something you can pick up overnight, it takes time and practice. His pronunciation is good and I don’t think it was nearly as horrible as you made it out to be.
After reading the transcript, I’m too scared to actually click the link.
popseoul seriously needs to get a life. let’s look at Rain’s accomplishments… he went from being a starving dancer to become the most popular singer in Korea and now he is the LEAD in a major Hollywood movie. He has accomplished much more than anyone in the Kpop world could ever dream of…and he is only 26. Let’s give the guy a break. No one has handed Rain anything…he’s worked hard. You are “embarrassed to be Korean” because of Rain? I’d like to see what you have accomplished in your life besides your
“excellent English listening skills”
it was horrible…….Rain looks like an idiot, gosh stop saying ”you know” everytime
Rain really needs a translator when doing interviews so that he will not come across as an idiot..
Rain, pls accept it, you need a translator…you are carrying the pride and honor of the Koreans, pls don’t embarrass them
i cringe while watching the clip…
I suggest people to not click on the link for the actual interview cause it was really painful to watch Rain struggling to talk to the interviewer. Popseoul did everyone a favor by writing it. It’s not so bad reading it but it is really painful to actually having to listen to it.
OMG… Omg, I can’t stop laughing. What the FREAK are you saying, Rain? Damn it, how EFFECTIVE are his English lessons exactly? I wish American-bound Korean stars can at least be semi-bilingual before even embarking on this type of voyage. It could spare all us Koreans AND most importantly HIMSELF a hecka lot of embarrassment.
And Lucy, you are undoubtedly an overly-hardcore Rain fan to realize that, sure, Rain has accomplished a lot… but it doesn’t mean he should go and take on Hollywood knowing scarcely any comprehensible English.
It’s hard even reading it. I don’t want to watch the interview. People kept saying give him and break, he’s done so much, blah blah. The fact is Rain spread himself too thin to take on this task and therefore did a half-ass job. He was even trying to take on the Chinese market by singing in terrible mandarin. Come on, he hasn’t even master one language and he’s trying to take on another? He’s trying hard alright, but he’s not smart about it either.
TT.TT that…I….oh my…how the hell did you get through that two times..o.O
RAIN!! WHY!?!??!?!?!?! he was so cool back then…god that…i..o.O
and what the hell was up with some of those questions?? i don’t even know which is worse, his stumbling english or the questions. at least the interviewer had patience. he needs more lessons…-_-
I’m not a Rain fan, but you have to actually know a fair amount of a language to be bad at it. So, give the guy a break!
How long has Jackie Chan spoken English? 15 years? And he still messes up.
OMG OMG! THAT WAS JUST BAD!! O.O
I had to stop watching the interview….I just feel embarrassed for Rain…. He understood the questions but he is not confident enough or lacks of English skills to provide coherent answers *sigh*…. T.T
So sad *tsk* *tsk* *tsk*….I was just thinking why can’t he get a freaking INTERPRETER! or a freaking Translation device plug! Does he thinks ppl are going to make fun of him bc he has an interpreter!
He looks nervous and not at easy during the interview….
Better luck next time… I guess?
Saranghae Ji Joonah!!
Annyong!
PS. Your articles are improving Popseoul!
Popseoul today is the 27th not 28th!!
Give the guy a break!
he’s bRAIN dead…uh, “you know”
I think rain still need some work on his english…. I wasn’t expecting something like that from him… I’m not a fan of him but i always hear his news as a person to look up to… I’ve watched the interview myself and it was truly embarassing.
Well…. goodluck to rain and hope he will do well in his next interview.
Shouldn’t have left Jyp before he learned to speak English properly…
OMO, Popseoul I feel your pain and I;m not even korean or have any association with rain whatsoever. Obviously the guy made a complete fool of himself, and looked more like a geek than what else. I even would have more respect for him if he just spoke korean and let the guy translated it in english. But as tough as he wanted to be, he pulled the effort himself. Never again RAIN. It won’t do your fame any good.
OH god !! i just read the interview now i’m gonna watch the video ! O.o i’m kinda surprised honestly cuz i guess we expect him to do his best at everything.
It would be better to get a translator..honestly. I’m also cringing badly..lol
Wat the heck was that. Not to be mean but he really needs to take lots and lots of english classes. the reposter must have been like “wat the hell.”
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, SNAP. So sad. What. A. Mess.
i’m viet, and i don’t know any korean whatsoever, but even
i stopped the video after he said “naked. everyday. inside my house.”
seriously that was way too painful for me to hear the rest of it
honestly, i’m a little disappointed too
His English isn’t that bad, it was just bad timing.
“Popseoul today is the 27th not 28th!!”
She’s in KOREA, where it IS the 28th.
“Popseoul today is the 27th not 28th!!”
She’s in KOREA, where it IS the 28th!
This made laugh so much, thank you. Your comments were spot on to make it even funnier and less cringe worthy hahaha!
Watching the video is even better with the translator on the side and I think the blabla was “argh wurv it” Oh well he’s cute ^^
..wow.
ok i dont even know where to start. first off that was just awkward to the max. and then rain…trying to be all funny and sarcastic but looking incredibly incredibly stupid. i almost feel bad for him…almost
To the person who said English is the hardest language to learn: Are you a complete idiot?
Oh…Wow. I just had to turn the video off after Rain answered the first question. It’s just…horrible. And I feel bad for him, although it was kind of dumb on his part to conduct an interview in English if he knew his English wasn’t up to par. I feel embarrassed for him.
im not korean but this is embarrassing for asians abroad in general!
Jake - Last time I checked - no! And I believe I said it is the “most difficult;” sounds better than harder. There is plenty of evidence to prove that English is much more difficult to learn than any other language because of the variations in grammar and syntax. I work with and have several foreign friends who, even after living several years - even decades - in the US, cannot speak English properly whether it be due to strong accents or slip ups in grammar and sentence structure.
Verb conjugation is also difficult in English because there are so many rules. Other Latin based languages, namely Spanish, are much simpler in this regard. Another reason why English is more difficult than any other language is that it adapts spelling patterns and root words from an immense variety of other languages.
Perhaps your struggles with languages aside from English make you think otherwise, but maybe that’s your ineptitude showing.
just get back to korea and focus your career….
that where he belongs.
Wow. I cannot describe in words how embarressed I was for him as I watched this interview. It was beyond embaressing, it was utter humilitation….
So, yea, the guy can’t speak english after 3 years, thats fine. It’s hard to learn another language, I understand that completely. But whats up with not using a translator? Why can’t he just effing get one??? With the english skills that he has (or lack thereof), he will never get anywhere in hollywood. He needs to go find himself a translator fast or go back to korea.
yeah, i stopped watching that thing after like 20 seconds..
AWKWARD!!!!!!!..
wow..i felt bad for the interviewer..
seems like his english skills are getting worse!
seriously, what’s up with those answers..it doesn’t even relate to the question…
my friend who is living here for 3 years could speak better than that and she’s from brazil without knowing english..
he should go back just focus on asia market..maybe he could get more fans..
DBSK knows japanese more than rain know english…(okay, so that’s a bad comparison but it’s also foreign language)..
Anyone else read the Soompi post? xD
http://www.soompi.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=235680
eww.. that was just too horrible to watch.. uggh.
the interviewer is a rude sex offensive freak.to ask an Asian grown man like Rain such irrelevant awkward questions on camera of course Rain will be put on the spot plus his beginner’s English that interviewer should be punched in the face just like what the American celebs do to media freaks like him.
Dear Rain,
Please use translator next time
I love you
what the hell was that???
i’m embarassed for him =[
sucks for Rain to be living in the same country with you, poopseoul.. I’d have to understand if you or some others bash on his English, but to say, and I quote, “Luckily, my excellent English listening skills spared me another run through”.. Okay, excellent huh??? since when? The last time I checked, even YOUR readers correct your usage and you call it excellent?! So much for adding to the “cring-worthiness” of your post..
And if you’re so great in English, why don’t you teach him instead? You’re both koreans anyway..Then again, knowing you, whose got excellent English skills, I doubt you’ll ever do that..

ROFL That was such humor! Thank you for the laugh, Rain! LOL!
I’m not his fan or anti. I laughed at the transcript because it’s funny. But when I watched the clip, I felt painful for him and had to stop the clip after a few questions.
That was pretty much the most painful thing I ever read. Wow. One would assume that after three years that he would be at least somewhat conversational. I realize that English is a very hard language to learn, but seriously?! Rain, please use an interpreter because you’re going to be eaten alive if your movie is a success and you have to do interviews and whatnot.
SJC, English is one of the simpler languages to learn. The verb conjugations aren’t that complicated, aside from a few irregular verbs, which, even if you misuse, no one is going to deem you an illiterate. French and Spanish have similar verb conjugations and a comparable number of irregular verbs and verb forms. The students you work with are most likely older, and it is extremely difficult to become fluent in any language once you are past a certain age. I am completely fluent in Chinese, and I can read and write French. However, since I’ve never lived in a French-speaking environment, I can’t ever hope to speak like (or even close to) a native.
Your argument about the various roots of English words is essentially a non-issue. Etymology doesn’t dictate the difficulty of a language. Instead, a language with a rich etymological history is easier to learn, because similar words often have similar meanings. For instance, the prefix “ob” often means “against.”
The difficulty of a language is dependent more upon whether or not said language is based on an alphabetical system. Most Asian languages are not based on an alphabet. Therefore, every word is its own character. If you don’t know the character, there is no way to phonetically figure it out, as there is no system or set of logic. English, on the other hand, is phonetically structured around its alphabet. So, if you have heard, but never seen a certain word, you can logically decipher its meaning from knowledge of the English alphabet.
his english was a joke it was so awkward i wonder what the interviewer thought i mean common big bang didnt even have english lessons like time can speak and understand it better than him !
thats just sad.
I cant beleive hes gunna be in a movie that is STARRING him…I just cant believe it.
Lordy, I couldn’t do it. I clicked on the link but then got so scared after a second of hearing Rain talk, I just had to stop it. Man, sad.
if he stayed in US, he would be practicing his english.. but i guess he doesn’t.. it took me one year to stay in US and learned english.. wow.. need translator BAD! just stop making a fool of yourself rain.. even Se7en did better than you!
What happened to the English lessons he’s been taking????
CORRECTION TO POPSEOUL’s effed up “transcript” (IN POST BELOW)
Okay, granted, the first two questions were pretty hilarious and I bet that interviewer laughed like hell afterwords, but in Rain’s defense, the last part of the interview was NOT THAT BAD! The worst parts were not what he said, but how he said it (except for the girlfriend thing…he was lame for that…) All the awkward laughing and obsessive use of “you know” made him sound weird, but here’s what he REALLY said:
READ POST BELOW……
Btw, you can’t put ALL the blame on Rain! That “interviewer” (a.k.a comic-book-reading-anime-watching-most likely fat so I hate on Rain because he’s hott-nerdy a$$-I can’t get a girlfriend so I watch hentai on the days I don’t work-LAME!) took advantage of the fact that he can’t speak English and asked stupid questions on purpose to make fun of him b/c Rain probably doesn’t know how to be sarcastic the way Americans usually are.
I am glad Rain is doing good, i support him always
You haven’t lost your sense of humor Popseoul!
SO F’ hilarious!
HAHAHAHAHAHA
THAT MUST HAVE BEEN SO AWKWARD FOR HIM
HAHAHAHAHAHA
i can just leave laughing
good try bi….good try
it seems like rain must have given several interviews before this-i think the interviewers should have done some research, find out how horrible his interviews are, and just give him a list of questions to prepare. i mean the interview focus is now on ninja assassin. he should have a few intelligent phrases prepared beforehand.
hahha. it seems like he should come back Korea, and be concentrated on Korea market? i can’t stand the word” you know”. it seems appear in every sentences, what a shame? i thinks he should give “Se7en” a bow for his english skill. at least, se7en can do an interview properly, like human style. rain was doing it like ‘a clown” in “Assasin” movie.
rain!! he really needs to go back to korea or something…he’s embarassing koreans everywhere…
as much as i love him, he really needs to stop with these enpredictable interviews or at least learn some more english before showing his face to americans…
Dead gfs becoming swords? Sounds interesting.
REAL TRANSCRIPT:
Interviewer: I gotta know- is one of your favorite things standing topless in the “rain”? <–(Okay, so we’re ALREADY starting off wrong! Who the hell asks something like that? Oh, I forgot, wasn’t Rain at a COMIC BOOK CONVENTION!? Aren’t all the people who go to those things like Trekkies or something?)
Rain: Ahhh hahaha…uh…yes…everyday..naked in my house… haha just kidding. <–(Rain’s attempt to be sarcastic. Even though it didn’t come off well, it doesn’t take a genius to see he was referring to taking a shower!
Interviewer: We see some pretty wicked weapons…what are you going to do with that….
Rain: That’s my girlfriend. (Rain points to the 2 swords in the poster) That’s my first girlfriend. That’s my second girlfriend. <–(Okay, I will have to give it to popseoul, that was kind of lame…)
Interviewer: is the soul of your dead girlfriend in that weapon? <-wtf?
Rain: I…I….you know…just kidding <–(Ok, so he doesn’t grasp the concept of conjunctions like “I’m”…so what?)
Interviewer: ….I heard you can’t get over your dead girlfriend… <–(the only LEGITIMATE question in the ENTIRE DAMN INTERVIEW!)
Rain: I don’t have girlfriend.. real girlfriend, you know. <–(You can’t blame him for being a little confused. The guy was asking all these other off-the-wall questions! He just had to be clear! Hell, I didn’t know where the interviewer was going with that one either.)
Interviewer: In the movie, you have a girlfriend, she dies right?
Rain: ahhhh yes (nod)… ya-su…(nod) …ya-su… <–(what were you trying to say with this one POPSEOUL? He VERY CLEARLY said “yes”, there was no “su” at the end!
Interviewer: This brings up an interesting question about sex-what does the ninja do when his girlfriends are weapons like that? <–(Obviously ,and unsuccessfully, trying to be funny. That question was WACK and we all know it! Damn nerds, always thinking about the sex they can’t have…
Rain: ….huuhuu… no….. don’t do it again please <—(Rain is laughing like he can’t believe this guy asked him such a gay question. His response can be taken two ways: Either he is telling the guy to stop asking questions like that or he is playing along with the interviewer and actually answering his awkward question.)
Interviewer: Just teasing ya. So what kind of training did you have to do to get into this role? <–SECOND LEGITIMATE QUESTION in this entire WASTE of our friggen time called an interview!)
Rain: in the movie right? <–(He just had to be sure……there’s no telling with this guy…I mean c’mon…having sex with your swords???)
Interviewer: …I’m asking you movie questions…your girlfriend in the movie is dead, not in real life….I’m sorry if there is … <—(yeah, whatever….sure you are…)
Rain: I’ve been training for 6 months… you know….for the moment.. I’ve been…ahhhh…controlling (so much for your listening skills, huh POPSEOUL ^_~) my mind and menu with mainly chicken breasts and vegetables… it was almost killed me…. it’s horrible… _< DUH! POPSEOUL, you seriously need to watch that interview again and brush up on YOUR English ^_~
Interviewer (speechless)…opps sorry. Did you get to wear a traditional ninja outfit in the film? <– First of all, he wasn’t speechless. If you LISTENED to the interview, his mic got cut off and when he put it back on, he said “sorry” *rolls eyes* Oh, and once again, another DUMB A$$ question! What’s the name of this movie again? Say it with me: NINJA Assassin! What the hell do you think he is going to wear in the movie???
Rain: yes. yep…ah… it was … fantastic (rehearsed at least 1000 times)..maybe if you see the movie… you will figure it out <–(How do you know he rehearsed it? That line sounded the same as his entire “interview”. By now, you can tell by Rain’s facial expression that he’s pretty fed up with the bull and decides to get smart. He’s basically saying what I’ve been saying all along, since his dumb@$$ can’t figure out by the title of the movie what he wears, then maybe he’ll FIGURE IT OUT when he watches it. Then, I guess the “interviewer” got the hint and ended the interview QUICKLY haha! Either that, or the cosplayers just arrived and he wanted to hurry and go see! xD
And there you have it! The REAL AND UNTAINTED interview. A word of advice POPSEOUL: You are Asian, so you ABOVE ALL, should know that Americans (mostly of the lighter kind) like to make fun of us. Even though you may not like Rain, instead of giving him the benefit of the doubt, you decided to join in and make fun of someone who is trying to broaden our options in the entertainment world. You knew what that guy was trying to do. Instead of giving an unbaised opinion like you are SUPPOSED to do, you take the low road. But I guess I am asking too much. You aren’t a REAL journalist anyway, just a bitter Asian chick with a blog. Not only Asians come to Popseoul y’know. You should want to show our people in the best light. All you do is make us look like a bunch of wannabes. Occasionally you have funny stories, but your views get more slanted with each one! When that other Popseoul chick gets her blog up, you probably won’t be seeing me anymore…
HAHAHAHAHAHA XD I can’t stop laughing. He’s just too funny
He might have not given great answers, but his pronunciation is good.
Reading it made me cringe in fright. >< oh lord

*audience laugh when we enter. i hav no idea why ^-^”*
C: Hi this question is for Rain. we just want to say we’re really big fans of you, like BIGGER fans *points to Im Coming album* and…
K: We’re just wondering, they call you the King of Korea Pop and in Korea they really love you, so what is it about America that makes you choose to expand your fame to this country?
RAIN: Well, i love America. and… here’s a lot of girls *audience laugh* Thats it! *audience laughs* Im j/k you know! im making fun *Rain giggles* Thank you.
M: Saranghaeyo Oppa! +heart sign+
RAIN: Thank you *hides face, audience continues laughing*
Fellow Rain Fan: Hi this question is for Rain also…
elle (TM), thanks for somewhat enlightening ‘em poopseoul about the real thing..Yeah I agree you’re asking too much, coz duh she’s a “be-scared-of-me-people, I’m one of the big guys(gals) in Korea” wannabe! If she doesn’t bash her fellow koreans, its the end of the world! And I don’t know if she feels superior than Rain (and others) just becoz she has a blog..Helloo?? feel so confident coz you’re behind a computer?? I bet if you and Rain walk sideways, you’ll look like a dwarf with a keyboard..you’ll even be stepped upon by the clouds..lol And you said Poopseoul is a bitter Asian chick? I think a chick(literally) even looks better than her…
And remember this poopseoul, one day, Rain will do something for you, your mom (assuming she’s still alive)and your country, and you’ll wish internet was never born baby..
I’m not completely against you commenting on his English, everyone has a right to do that..but to a hear from a Korean?? Post it on a blog which is flocked by different nationalities? Given that almost everyone in the US are probably laughing at Rain now, adding salt to the wound aren’t you? I thought koreans are nationalistic?? Oh well, certainly not..
omg…that was sad! I cringed too…he needs to rely more on his translator until he gets better at english so that ppl with take him seriously. Also, who’s managing/doing PR work for him?!?! They should of helped him prepare for these kinds of interviews! And who’s his stylist? OMG he’s not looking his finest in that interview…
and I agree with SJC, english is at least one of the hardest languages to learn (of course not for me since I’m a native speaker) so do give him a break (and rain, PLEASE listen to your translator, ok?).
and to whoever that compared dbsk to rain…DBSK only knows more japanese compared with rain’s english skills because the japanese sentence structure is VERY SIMILAR to korean. English is COMPLETELY different as I should know since I’ve studied Japanese and Korean. I had korean friends that studied in japan with me and they were able to learn how to speak conversational japanese from just ONE YEAR of learning it BEFORE they even arrived to Japan (while I took japanese for 2 years in america and STILL couldn’t speak japanese well until after 5 months of staying in japan).
But yeah, rain’s trying his best but he needs to work HARD to learn english or he will never be taken seriously.
ahhahahah nothing has changes here in Popseoul. I left this blog site for quite a long time cos of her bias and ridiculous post and went somewhere else better and more accurated news.
came back here to visit and the site has changed but attitude hasnt. there’s still lots of bashing of both side
Popseoul: do u feel the love of those that bashed u
ahahahahahhahha u’r still as idiot as ever. and pls dont flatter yourself with “excellent English listening skills…” cos if u do actually have that skill, you should of listen to your bloggers here talkin/bashing on YOU
thx TM for posting up CORRECTION. if not for u, most of idiots will jst take what PS post and start their bashing w/o knowing the truth
are you really?
is this really rain?
i thought he got better in english?
his answers is not even close to related to the questions..
i’m a fan of his but his English is just horrible…
i wanna see the Video if there is one..
I didn’t think his English was that bad. At least he can still speak it. I don’t know why you’d be embarassed to be Korean just because he’s not fluent in English. Give the guy a break.
ahahahahah…
its remind me when he stil promoting the speed racer …the interviewer from singapore ask him about the car…and he said…i like dim sum…uhm…really like dim sum….u know dim sum? do u know dim sum restaurante…???kekkekekekekke…i was like..is he on drug?…
it’s painful…
and those who are defending him by saying English is a hard language to master should really stop smoking crack.. Mandarin and Korean is probably 10X harder and people like myself and others have learnt it to reasonable fluency in a year or so.. his standard is 3 months fluency, not 3 years..
if you can’t speak, it’s ok. Just don’t go around hyping that you can speak English.. and start getting serious learning it..
and all those who are are hating at popseoul right now.. go run off to e other blogs.. bye.. i’ll even send you off with a handkerchief.. what? not gone yet? shucks.. i thought they’d really go.. damn..
oh my God, his command of english is really poor, you know, wow i can understand him, but you know ten thousand timesssssssssssssssss T_T
i miss Bi but by acting in old korean dramas, he was really funny however he persits to get cast in American movies and I think it’s necessary a fluent english first, i thought Rain speaks english perfectly, well good luck Bi. I don’t like his current hairstyle T_T
haha that was adorable=]
at least he tried his best
goshh
i mean, i study jap at school and when i practise my speaking at home i speak fine~
but when i have to speak in front of examiners~ i get really nervous and forget everything
i bet you he could answer all those questions~ he looks really nervous so give him a break!!
@ K
No, I think I’ll stay. Can’t let the idiots and haters only have THEIR say. Guess you’re just gonna have to be disappointed! ^_~
His pronunciation was amazing for someone who doesn’t really know English. I was expecting him to be FOB like me. LOL.
As for the usage…uh, wow. I agree, i think he should use translators.
well i think it’s because he still has a lot of korean culture in him. in korea the sword-girlfriend joke would have been well accepted. anyways, i agree with one of the comments that we shouldn’t bash on his english since he’s from asia cause WE ARE ASIAN??? and that americans get us easy on these kind of kung fu, esl things. but it’s just sad to see world famous star kind of getting embarassing TT
1st of all, i’m neither a fan of RAIN nor an anti. I think d biggest mistake RAIN had done was to do an English interview when he wasn’t able 2 even convey n express thoughts…yet. But dat doesn’t mean other people can slam his English badly. Pliz consider, at least he tried n showed his determination 2 learn a new language, but d sad thing was his trial didn’t succeed…..n there r a lot of people out there just waiting 2 make fun of him. learning a new language at his age definitely smth difficult. Yes, he has been learning English for 3 years, but it’s not like if he were 6,7 years old when he started learning English. This is called puberty. I’m sure u’ve heard about it, rite…F2 LEARNING? F1 ACQUISITION? motor skills? critical period hypothesis? D main languages used in my country r Malay n English. So I’ve been learning English since I was a kid…n yet I’m not a fluent speaker of English…..n probably not good in English writing as well (well,it’s not shameful 2 feel inferior n so wat if my English is not perfect). My point is RAIN doesnt hav imprssive English skills until now for some strong reasons. Relax, he’s learning. Mistakes r process n progress of learning. N instead of painfully slamming him, try 2 help him. Whatever it is, he came from d same country as most of u. N whoever said learning a 2nd language at d age of more than 13 is smth easy, dat’s d most stupid lie i’ve ever heard…..but watever it is, RAIN, pliz dont do any interview in English anymore….until u can really find d correct vocabs.
I’m not his fan and my english is not better than him, so I shouldn’t give comment on his English.. but I really feel bad for him. If he is not ready for English interview.. Plz use translator, nobody laugh at him for that.. but ppl will laugh at his answers and his “you know”… I can’t believe he’s learning English for 3 years..
If I were his fan…I would be very painful to watch this interview and his interviews…
I really want to meet his English teacher… what did they teach him? Did they tell him that “you know” and “yeah” sound so stupid?
My gosh. That you so much for the warning. I was two seconds in the video and I stopped. He makes me sad. ;[
I love Rain to death, but it was a little awkward. He was trying to be good-natured, but the poor guy just wasn’t prepared. I love how other countries applaud the effort to learn their language and even help them (didn’t BoA correct Brian’s Korean?), but Americans are like, “Speak English. I don’t understand you.”
And we stereotype the French as being arrogant. There just seems to be a tad too much HYPOCRISY in that. At least they’re willing to correct pronunciation and vocabulary. The interviewer just left Rain thrashing in the water, and didn’t even try to help him.
By the way, thank you, elle. You said everything I was thinking and more. ^_^
obviously he is not ready for hollywood…
i dont come from a country which uses english as the main language, but i can talk english more fluent than him! and i’m just a teen..
he can’t speak coherent english to save his life. it would be so much better if he could speak in korean, at least he wouldn’t be talking abt erm… chicken breasts and vegetables :S
Forecast calls for Rain
July 24, 2008
By Glenn Whipp, Film Writer
Joel Silver has mellowed over the years, and when I’ve encountered him lately, he seems like a nice enough guy. The legendary screaming seems to have tapered off.
But the man’s movies of late aren’t exactly generating a lot of whoops and hollers from the Comic-Con crowd.
Silver returned to Comic-Con Thursday, selling the latest slate from his Dark Castle brand. First up: “Ninja Assassin,” a movie whose title speaks for itself. It stars Korean pop singer Rain, also seen earlier this summer in Silver’s “Speed Racer.”
Silver introduced a “Ninja Assassin” clip. “It’s really out there,” he said. The footage Silver showed featured lots of fire and people hitting each other with sticks and fists and a fair amount of stylized blood geysers in the vein of “300.”
Yawn. The teen girls in Hall H didn’t seem to care about the quality - or the movie. They just wanted to express their undying affection for the one known as Rain
Sample: “Hi. This question is for Rain. I love you Rain! Just wondering how you prepared for this role of Ninja Assassin.”
Rain, who has shiny hair and a bright smile but not the most exacting command of the English language, responded: “I always dreamed about being an action star. Finally I made it. Please wait for ‘Ninja Assassin.’ Thank you.”
Here’s a guess: There will not be much Rain-related dialogue in “Ninja Assassin.”
Sample question No. 2: Does Rain hope to conquer America as he has South Korea?
“I love America. Here … is a lot of girl. That’s it. I’m just kidding, you know. Thank you.”
What’s up next for Rain, one fan wondered. A musical, maybe? A romantic-comedy? (Suggestion: A silent film.)
Rain: “I think it’s going to be huge. Really. My first girlfriend was sword. My second was ninja chain. I think it’s going to be really successful.”
Thank you.

bwahahahahahah XD
never fail to amuse me!!
eventho i love him,,
he is mad funny,,,
rain, just stick to Korea okay??
First and foremost, we all know that it is not an easy task to manage a language within 3 years.
BUT, I believe that Rain should get a translator rather than figure what the interviewer asked by himself. Or even he can understand the entire question , he still might not able to answer it in a more appropriate sentence.
Then, what is the matter to speak with your mother tongue?! Will speaking English makes one more superior?
Okay, I’m calling BS on the people saying that 3 years isn’t enough time to become conversational in a language. Maybe for us regular peasants who only have a language class for a few hours a week…but not someone like Rain.
Yes, I know learning a language after a certain age is more difficult, but not impossible,GOOHWTBS. Rain has alot of resources open to him…he could afford to have a world class tutor spend hours a day teaching him, he can afford to travel to countries and immerse himself in the language. He’s just not putting the effort into it that he needs to, so sorry …I cut him no slack
One things for sure, If he was still with JYP he would’ve at least been able to make coherent english convo (not memorize stale lines)by now, or at least still use a translator so he doesn’t look like a weirdo. If he’s spreading himself to thin, that’s were a manager steps in and directs his energies.
And this is coming from a Rain fan, so I don’t want to hear it!
……wtf is this…. even from the first question I get the feeling that Rain has no idea what he’s being asked..
OMG I’M TOTALLY BREATHLESS FROM LAUGHING. XDDD
Rain was SO OWNED.
just read Elle(TM)’s comments,,,
i do think she has a point,,, *well, lots…*
Oh my god..please tell me that he was not serious??>..i mean c’mon man..it seems like he was just saying what he thought made sense..but obviously it wasn’t working..may english is not his thing.
http://www.IGotUGGS.com
I’m sorry.. but I just had to laugh (really hard and out loud at work) at that transcript
oh Rain - you do amuse and entertain me — albeit maybe not in the intended way
I had to stop watching it after the second question..SO embarassing. I love Bi and he’s a talented actor/singer but..not so much in the English department.
eheh, oh Rain. I swear this interview was worse th
