I know. Knocking a guy down when he’s already down isn’t very nice. But I just can’t help it!
Rain is pure comedy. The reason being is that you can’t make this stuff up.
Yet again, Magic Feet entertains with the same hilarious (and rehearsed) line “controlling my mind and menu with chicken breasts and vegetables…you know, it’s horrible, you know” in another interview at the 2008 ComicCon in San Diego. This time, you can see the translator beside him trying to keep a straight face by looking down. Just imagine how many times the poor guy has heard that same tired line!
The best part of the interview was at the end:
Interviewer: “Did you learn any German?”
Rain: “It was beautiful. Yeah.” (translator whispers)
Interviewer: What are you working on next?
Rain: ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh… I don’t know yet but….I wish… I wish… you know… my next film … would be…love story”
The repeated mention of a “love story” here at the end of this interview and also in the Movieweb interview suggest that the man needs some real good loving. I guess the “two swords” as girlfriends did not satisfy.

Admittedly, I have a tendency to utter the phrase “You know” A LOT when I speak. People point out this fact quite frequently and beg me to stop. It is a work in progress. This in one of those times where I realize I must try harder to remove that particular phrase from my vocabulary…

i remember when jackie chan and jet li first went on american TV — talk shows at that — their accents were really awful, thick, a mouthful of marbles. the difference between them and rain is, they didn’t pretend to understand a question if they just had no clue. so the host-interviewer had to adjust, ask it differently, or simpler. they tried hard to mean SOMETHING, make SOME sense, even if it was cheesy humor translated directly from a chinese phrase. but rain baby…he’s not trying to say anything at all! just sticking to the “i work hard, it was great, an honor to work bla blah” PR-image. a star personality is what americans connect to, not just a print-ad, MV cool image…

I think a lot of us need to realize that it’s probably just a speaking habit of his. I’m pretty sure a lot of you repeat the same thing when you’re talking to someone and may not realize it, because you’ve grown so used to saying it and hearing it as you talk.
His “you know” is just like our “like”, that some of us may tend to place after every other word.
To be honest, for someone his age and considering how late he started to learn English - it’s not that bad. Sure his accent his horrible and it takes a while for his sentences to form, but at least he’s trying. As long as Rain and his interviewer can understand each other, then what’s the big deal? I’ll be honest and say that when I hear him speak I cringe visibly because it’s not perfect, but I’m not going to bash him for it.
I don’t get the hate for Rain.

Practice and daily english use in social situations will take care of the FEW problems he has, like rapid response and connectivity. He already has a large vocab and strong grasp on particles & grammar, from what I can tell. But I ask you, when exactly would he have time to hang out with friends and chat in english? Before, or after learning lines, filming TWO movies, working out, doing photoshoots, flying across 3 different countries, doing volunteer work, and running his company? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Meanwhile, unsuccessful netizens with hate in their hearts poke fun at a megastar for trying his best. Wow. I wonder if it’s jealousy or are you guys just truly awful, sad people?

this is an interview with Isabella Leong, still a newbie, she’s fr Macau I think, and didnt go to highsch, just studied English for couple months.
I barely know her, but I expect at least THIS level of english fluency, if not just dun get all confident and cocky to conduct the interview ABzilla style.
Because, first the foremost Abzilla is there to promo a movie, it’s not his own showcase of how good/and english is. And to serve that purpose alone he need to make sense in whatever tongue he’s speaking in. But he failed at that.
It’s not his english that is the problem, it’s the content of what he’s saying.

Don’t just ASSume you think you know what the interviewer is asking because you recognize 2 words in his question. LISTEN, or wait for the translator. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using him as that is what he’s there for and english is NOT your native tongue.

His accent isn’t bad. Everyone has an accent. Americans have an accent, depending on which region you are from.
His accent is a non-issue. His pronunciation is fine.
It’s the fact that his answers make it seem like he has absolutely NO clue what’s being asked. Most (if not all) of his answers/statements are stupid/silly/goofy/weird. The ‘you know’ every other word is not helping. That tells me that he is lost in conversation. Very, very lost.

He’s the LEAD in this film. He can’t hold a decent conversation. No, no one is gonna ‘give him a break’. He had 3 frackin years to handle this. There’s no excuse. I mean, can you imagine him on Jimmy Kimmel, Jay Leno, David Letterman?? OMG, they’d have a FIELD DAY WITH HIM! And the sad part is that Rain would think that people were laughing with him instead of at him because he’d have no clue as to what is going on! This movie is gonna bomb before it even comes out! Isabella Leong studied English for one year and holds pretty good interviews. Her answers/statements actually make sense. Maybe he needs to find out who her tutor is?

To speak different languages is a gift. I have a Korean friend who studied English for ten years. She has mastered the writing part but awkward on the speaking part.
Conversational English is way different than English writing. Rain’s answers were funny because he just couldn’t find the correct words to use. It is natural for someone who doesn’t speak the language everyday.
Popseoul is just a prick. I bet you money, she may be able to write English but I don’t think she can speak the language very well. She will do the ummmm…..ahhhhh…..ummm too.

and please don’t go calling him dumb………i have watched his korean interviews and he comes across as very intelligent and wise for his years not to forget very down to earth. because his command over the english language is still not very good he is unable to express himself well.

This must be the only reason why Popsoeul’s suddenly working so hard to bash Rain and so many Rain’s posts appear all at once. News of other celebs rarely reach 30 comments, while Rain’s reach 100+ easy. More traffic to their site, more appeal to prospective clients.

well, yeah, maybe I am being too harsh over Rain and all, and after reading your super excellent (better than Popseoul’s) comments, I just realized that humans are not perfect, and learning English as second language is probably harder than what we expected….maybe it’s easy for us to say that he’s just lazy or whatever, but the thing is, he’s still in the learning process….you can’t just expect someone like him, who sets Korean as his first language to rise up to a super duper excellent English speaker…
after I think again and again, Laila is absolutely correct…to be in his position is very hard…let’s face it, if we are in front of the camera and someone ask some questions to us, we cannot answer them 100% correctly…not like somebody who has very high skills on English

His English “teacher” should definately be fired…hire a “professor” if you have so much money…his English sounds like he hired some “whore” on the street…honestly, he sounds like some foreign whore working on the street.
