The highlight of watching the mildly interesting special program “Making of East of Eden,” last night on MBC was the outtake with Lee Yeon-hee messing up her lines when Song Seung-heon took off his t-shirt. You could literally see the girl salivate!
Basically the East of Eden special just showed how much money (25 million USD) was poured into the production of the drama. Noteworthy was the special set that was built in the style of the 1980’s Korea, and filming in foreign locales (Hong Kong).
That was Monday. On Tuesday night, eagerly anticipating more shirtless moments of eye-candy Song Seung-heon, I kept wondering when the action was going to happen. It never did because I grew bored after 20 minutes of trying to figure out what is going on.
Not sure whether to give the drama another chance.
Did anyone watch the 1st episode? Your thoughts?

well, i thought SSH was cute.
lol, i figured as much…
Where can I watch it with English subtitles? I’m still waiting for a SSH & Han Ji Hye or SSH & Lee Dae Hee possible hookup….Popseoul, let me know! hahah
Anyway, that sucks that the first episode wasn’t that interesting. Think of it this way, it could only get better? Or atleast let’s hope!
I loved it spesh kibum:P
i want song seung hun and lee yeon hee to be together^^
Lee Yeon Hee is pretty. She should go out with SSH. <3
This just aired and you’re already asking where the english subs are? Oh lawd
eek…
well they’re using a 90s formula for the 2000s. “serious, quality epic drama”…
sound of crickets chirping…:D
i love this drama.
I havent seen it yet, ill let you know what i think once i do ^.^
you can’t really expect much from the first episode.
Hopefully, it’ll get exciting.
Most dramas tend to do that.
Suck at the beginning, get exciting at the end, and end well or just bore us to death.
by the way does this series have to ddo anything with the original novel? east of eden by john steinbeck? or is it just coincidentally had the same name ….. =______=
^ I had the same question Yuna.
Oh god, I figure as much, but remember this is a 50 episodes drama! If it’s boring now, it’s going still be boring for awhile.
i’m only watching this drama becauseof song seung-heon
I want to watch just cause razor-fine….Song Seung-heon is in it…
hope this one is good because i havent watched a good drama in a long time and also considering that it has a bunch of good looking stars, it would be a total waste if it doesnt live up to the hype.
They should definitely do a big budget drama that resembles the Hollywood version of LOST, Heroes, etc.
It wasn’t boring…
It was pretty tense….
All beginnings are whack…
Dramas with 50 or more episodes are HITS.
It’s just the beginning don’t jump to conclusions…
I just hope it won’t become draggy…>.<
What a boring piece of tripe and an insult to the intelligence of the viewers. Basically the creators of the show went, “Hey! Here are some good-looking people! Please ignore the terrible pacing, weak dialogue, and cliche plot!”
“by the way does this series have to ddo anything with the original novel? east of eden by john steinbeck? or is it just coincidentally had the same name ….. =______=”
Korean dramas will often be named after classic books or movies to give the drama a veneer of importance.
i actually read this before watching the first episode today,
and it was contradictory to the impression you gave of it being BORING.
i found this drama to be some what like “Iljimae” minus the ancient korean setting.
okay, firstly, i must say that it doesnt make sense for ssh’s character to be about 6 or whatever age he is in the year 1961. that means he’s over 40 by the time the drama takes place in present time…unless it never does…we’ll see.
okay, ill summarize what i know about the plot and hopefully it’ll help.
ssh’s dad is a revolutionist, he’s the leader of a labor’s union and is trying to gain better working conditions for the coal miners..or that’s what i got from all the pickett signs and the singing in the first episode.
HOWEVER, there’s this evil dood named shin tae hwan(?) and he’s not even human..meaning he has SUCH an evil heart and mindset
in the beginning, the drama shows that he had an affair with a nurse and got her pregnant. this is a big NO, NO since that means he was cheating on his wife, and if his wife finds out, then he loses his chance of gaining a higher position in society, which his father-in-law is expected to pass on to him when he retires. SO, shin tae hwan orders these gangsters to kidnap the nurse and take the baby out, thus erasing the evidence that he ever had an affair.
on the other hand, shin tae hwan’s wife is also pregnant, and she delivers the same time as ssh’s mom, who is also pregnant, and both woman have a son.
coincedantly, the nurse who looks after the two babies in the hospital is the nurse that shin tae hwan had an affair with. she’s MAD PISSED so she switches the two babies, so sth has the son of ssh’s mom and ssh’s mom has the son of sth.
so back to the story of ssh’s dad being a revolutionist. the coal mine that ssh’s dad works in belongs to sth, or his father-in-law. the father-in-law is unhappy that there is a labor union who is trying to rebel against the company, so he tells sth to take care of it. obviously, sth needs to take care of this so that he can get some points so that the father-in-law will give him his position for sure.
sth finds out that ssh’s dad is the leader, and decides to kill him….does he succeed?????? …find out..
and this will result in the fate that ssh has in the drama. dun dun dun….
It has nothing to do with John Steinbeck. I’ve read ‘East of Eden’, and this drama plot is NOTHING like it. Just the same name.
i basically fast forwarded the first two episodes. i caught something in one of the episodes but didnt bother to really listen, but the hairdresser lady was saying something about next to eden there is a paradise? something like that.
the drama is okay. the first two episodes are kind of..mehh. there are going to be too many love triangles forming around SSH and from the character list it looks like there will be a bjillion plots and a bajillion twists that it’ll have to be 50+ episodes.
take away the high profile actors and they could turn this into an 일일드라마
oh boy i haven’t watch east of eden but someone told me that the rating of the pilot episode was 6.2% looking at the pics above yeah seems a little boring to me but hey it is just the first episode maybe something interesting will happened on the 2nd episode
the 6.2% rating was only the special. the pilot rated around 11-12%.
what?! 1980’s korea… argh that sounds boring.
ehhh?? Nah, the first two episodes were amazing! I was like crying for the whole of the second ep… well, you do when you finally understand what’s happening lol
hm… it’s really a pity if this drama turns out like what PS said, boring –> eww~
but, i think i’m gonna give a try first… eventhough old-time setting movie ALMOST never attracts me pretty much
hey wassssssssssssssup.
this movie takes place in the 80s. so it makes perfect sense that ssh’s character was born in the 60s. by the way, can’t you tell by the style that this wasn’t the 2000s?
i’m gonna watch later but not expecting too much from it as most hyped up dramas have always disappointed me.
it has soooo many “big” stars!
im watching it for song seung heon! that cutieeeeeeeeee!
So boring….really boring first 20mins..
when is SSh going to be all grown up? in the 5th Episode?
yeah the story is definitely complicated but trust me it is FAR from boring in my opinion. i was crying so much in the second episode it gets very emotional. i can’t wait for SSH to come out, he is one FINE guy…
who knows this series will turn into another phenomenal series which will extend indefinitely till MBC milks enough profit from it.
we love whirtless moments
The first episode was good. You should never judge a drama based on the first or first two episodes. I thought the first episode was quite interesting, and the nurse was really good at acting. Many dramas who have a lot of episodes have really bad ratings on the first couple of episodes, but towards the middle/end it skyrockets. East of Eden has 50 episodes- it has a lot of time to prove that it will be a good drama. The cast is wonderful as well. If you only watched the first 20 minutes and stopped, then you shouldn’t be writing this article. Who are you to say that East of Eden was boring when you didnt even watch half the first episode?
Oops I contradicted myself a bit. I mean that the first episode was good for ME but most people probably thought it was boring, and you shouldn’t judge the whole drama based on the first episode.
That’s too bad, kdrama quality has been declining lately and it sounds like the same old generic drama plot.
you can’t expect the first like 3 episodes
to be filled with action…
they have to introduce the drama before
any real action starts happening..
그니깐..몰르면 걍 보지마 ㅇㅋ?

what’s the role of lee da hae?i want her and ssh
I’m enjoying East of Eden. SSH LDH HJH must be worth watching.
The strong character of bad guy STH & Dchuls dad is catching. The bond between Dchul & his dad is touching. Im not comfy w the ex gf of Dchuls dad who has a dot by him (no matter how sincere & supportive her role to Dchul’s family may be). The babies switched by the avenging nurse whose baby was taken from her cut belly as ordered by STH intrigues me. Their future makes me curious. I like SSH’s performance but Lee Yeon-hee(am not sure if I got her name right) spoilt it, specially when she acts kick ass kind of gal & worst when she speaks English, that dance w her dad, awkward. Maybe she’s a good actress but not this role w SSH. LDH is impressive, she speaks English really well. Dongwook who is Donchuls “bro” & HJH are so in love. I suspect that they are half siblings(HJH must be the dot of the nurse whose baby was cut out of her. Dongwook & HJH have the same dad -STH the bad guy. I find the extreme character of Dongchul’s mum annoying. Except for the awkward performance of LYH(maybe not the right role for her) Im enjoying it. Lee Dahee & SSH should be a perfect love team.
After 20 minutes of watching this show I was bored as well….but I continued to watch it just incase…you should try again…its really good
