While many are still grieving over the recent and sudden loss of Lee Eon, another tradegy has hit entertainment community with Ahn Jae-hwan’s suicide. Ahn Jae-hwan’s body was found nearly 2 weeks after he died in a black van parked in a residential area of Seoul. Many believe that his death was the result of his USD 4 million debt from his businesses (movie and cosmetics). A few months earlier, Ahn Jae-hwan had expressed to his sonbae via sms that he wanted to die because of his financial burden. With his death, the debt is likely to be also dissolved since he and wife Jung Sun-hee were not registered as man and wife.

Now the rumor goes that there was something beyond the $4 million debt. The Korean media was emphasizing how $4 million (which is a lot of money to us) is more like $40k to celebrities of their status. And that it makes no sense for him to commit suicide over that matter. I know the debt collectors in Korea are scary and threatening, but the Korean celebrities hold higher power. Whether the “other” issue was a marriage problem, I think there’s more to this than the the debt.

Ahn was deep in debt and encountered many business failures before his death. The owner of several bars, restaurants and shoe stores reportedly faced bankruptcy and even had to sell a lucrative bar he owned in Gangnam as a last resort.
Apart from that, it is also said that a couple of weeks ago, he was fired from his job as a TV host for an entertainment news program because he allegedly missed several live broadcasts. Ahn disappeared from the public eye after that. His publicist explained it away as the actor’s attempt to go on a diet.

And I just put myself in the place of these celebrities attending funeral after funeral. Although there’s nothing we can do now for the deceased but to console their family and friends and to pay our respects, I hope that other celebrities can learn from this… to value life more… to understand that all obstacles can be overcome.
I think Ahn Jae Won purposely did not register himself and Jun Sunhee as husband and wife because he had planned to commit suicide and didn’t want his wife hauling the burden for him.
