Movie “The Chaser” gets 5 stars from UK

Chaser_080920

So POPSEOUL! was not the only one who thought so.

The movie, “The Chaser” (추격자) is easily the best thriller so far this year. Back in March, I spent most of the movie with one hand covering my face to watch it between my fingers and the other hand clutching the arm of my neighbor. Ha Jung-woo plays the cold and merciless serial killer to a tee. He lacks any remorse in his actions and that makes it all the more scarier. He plays opposite to Kim Yoon-suk, who takes on the role of an ex-cop running a “call girl” operation. When his best “girl” disappears, he goes looking for her and ends up hunting down the killer.

Directed by Na Hong-jin, the movie was picked as the “flick of the week” by the U.K. daily, “The Sun,” earning a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars. At the end of the review, the article also warned to “Catch it now before it is ruined by a planned Hollywood remake.”-and that is so true.

The movie, “The Chaser” will be re-packaged and remade Hollywood style by the people who produced “The Departed.”

Check out the UK trailer. “The Chaser” opens in the U.K. on September 19th.

The Korean trailer is better:

  4. 4 Joanne; September 20, 2008 at 5:35 pm

It’s already being remade? That was fast!

  5. 5 nikeg September 20, 2008 at 5:57 pm

definitely one of the better movies ive seen recently and no doubt the biggest reason why this is such a good movie is b/c of the shear normalcy of the killer.

  6. 6 starstarpanda September 20, 2008 at 6:32 pm

Oh yes! The korean wave is finally getting into England! Wooo hooo! I am going to get friends to watch this!

  7. 7 me September 20, 2008 at 6:45 pm

  8. 8 Misty September 20, 2008 at 7:29 pm

It could be remade by worse people than those who brought us The Departed.

  9. 9 luv September 20, 2008 at 8:35 pm

It annoys me how little credit is given to the original when hollywood remakes movies!

  10. 10 otto September 20, 2008 at 8:36 pm

of all the good reviews CHASER got, why do they keep quoting SUN? it’s a friggin tabloid! what’s next, Secret Sunshine gets 5 star endorsement from Nat’l Enquirer?

  11. 11 JDGLEGRA September 20, 2008 at 9:37 pm

It is good but not that great….
    Kind of slow…
I like seven days better than this, but i have to admit that lately korean thriller is better and darker…
    That’s a good sign…
    Dare to present the reality…
    Keep up the good work

  12. 12 tootsie September 20, 2008 at 9:39 pm

    nooo~~

why remake it? dang it, slap on some subtitles and call it a day. people should try to read more nowadays.

  13. 13 BKJSuh September 20, 2008 at 9:58 pm

    It is a SICK movie.

  14. 14 ria September 20, 2008 at 10:01 pm

I saw this on CR and I guess Im the only person that didnt ABSOLUTELY LOVE it. I wont give anything away, but Ill just say everybody in the film is excruciatingly dumb and it pretty much ruined it.

  15. 15 statz September 20, 2008 at 10:08 pm

At first, I was like okay, ha Jung woo is a creepy.. What kind of serial killer would willingly admit he killed numerous humans in his own house without being suspected or asked. But, I feel stupid after watching the movie, after watching it I still don’t get the reason why he would kill people. The way he kills is kinda really gross and scary but I truelly like this movie, the best one thriller I ever watch this year next to seven days…ha Jung woo deserves great in this movie. Oh, this kinda reminds me of his recent thriller drama, H.I.T. That drama rocks with ha Jung woo in it.

    I like the KOrean trailer but it gives too much of the “shock” scenes away when he does unexpected things and it makes me predict which I dont like ;.;

    Eitherway, I must watch this.

  17. 17 POP THIS! September 20, 2008 at 10:45 pm

When is it coming to US?????

  18. 18 POP THIS! September 20, 2008 at 10:47 pm

Otto is right. The Sun is a gossip rag. Just because it’s British doesn’t mean it’s classy. Their review doesn’t mean the movie is great at all. Actually, it means nothing.

  19. 19 samz872 September 20, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Natalie hun I was sooooo happy too…but the only place they are gonna show it is Sheperds Bush…and tahts TOOOOO FAR but i will go and probz meet ya there..lol…OMG so excited…

    xxxx

  20. 20 Natalie September 20, 2008 at 10:54 pm

Samsz872 … nooo why only show it in Shepherds Bush? And why make a remake, like tootsie said, slap on the subtitles!

  21. 21 mai-mai September 20, 2008 at 11:22 pm

oooh, i got goosebumps just watching… cnt wait to see it..

  22. 22 Sarai September 20, 2008 at 11:24 pm

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen. So well directed, well acted, and I love how you never find out the motives of the killer. Ha Jung Woo is awesome. <3
Hollywood needs to GTFO and stop ruining perfectly good movies. T.T

  23. 23 Shaenna September 21, 2008 at 12:35 am

Gosh, I hate when Hollywood remakes good Korean Movies, why can’t they just help re-distribute the movies in America.

  24. 24 kaiweasley September 21, 2008 at 1:03 am

I saw this last month and I couldn’t get over the story until the next day. It was creepy but it totally got my attention. Not for the queasy though :)

The lead girl…isn’t she “Boknam” from that KBS Drama about new generation daughters-in-law?

  25. 25 labusiam September 21, 2008 at 1:11 am

    Agree! It’s a great movie. :)

  26. 26 funtoosh September 21, 2008 at 1:22 am

  29. 29 JunJae September 21, 2008 at 1:50 am

    OMG! NO more REMAKES please!!!!!!!!!
I’m tired of it and they all suck ruining the best movies there are…
    and I LOVE The Chaser…oh…jeez…

  30. 30 Se7en_Fan September 21, 2008 at 2:16 am

Korean movies really are the best. They are the Gem’s of what cinema from Asia has to offer. I really wish the US would stop crapping all over these pieces of art. Its like taking a Sargent painting or drawing, remaking it by an artist of today and saying its better than the original. I mean that example may be extreme but its rare, really really rare that remakes outshine the original.

  31. 31 Haha September 21, 2008 at 2:26 am

True that, the way you kept referring THE SUN as if it’s some high end newspaper made me laugh. THE SUN is nothing more that a gossip tabloid who exaggerates and exploits small truths to become big lies. It’s interesting sure, but nothing in it should be taken without a pinch of salt haha.

Trust me, I’ve lived here all my life.

  32. 32 palki September 21, 2008 at 3:11 am

It was good but not as great as Bong Joon Ho’s Memories of Murder. Everyone, you have to see Memories of Murder. The Chaser looks very very inspired by it.

  33. 33 Afterhour September 21, 2008 at 3:23 am

THE SUN = Tabloid paper….HAHAHAH! So TRUE!

  34. 34 chuits September 21, 2008 at 3:37 am

It’s kinda weird to know that the sun gave this review, cos its one of those gossip and page 3 newspapers….but alot of ppl do read it
never the less cant wait to see it!

  35. 36 Ann*e September 21, 2008 at 4:35 am

    wow.
    this looks really
    good! though a little
    scary. lol XD

    haha. i hope
i can find it to watch :]

  36. 37 amberch0 September 21, 2008 at 6:16 am

this movie was amazing. SUPER CREEPY, but so well made and just great acting especially from ha jung woo. it’s no surprise that this movie was praised by critics internationally.

  37. 38 chocolate raisins September 21, 2008 at 6:55 am

the movie was so good! i was watching it with a friend and whenever a bloody or scary/loud part came out she closed her ears and closed her eyes! best movie! and yes…the korean trailer is soo much better

  38. 39 DB September 21, 2008 at 7:34 am

    Totally recommend this.

  39. 40 JooRii September 21, 2008 at 8:10 am

After watching the trailers I now have the urge to head to the cinema’s tomorrow! Too bad I’m not 18 >;[
But I’m really happy to know that the UK likes such an amazing Korean movie! ^^

  40. 41 cherry_o September 21, 2008 at 10:24 am

::sigh:: Hollywood is always remaking Asian movies…and when the American remake makes it big, they give little recognition to the original makers…

  41. 42 amareally September 21, 2008 at 10:26 am

Is Hollywood starting to run out of ideas ????? my GOD !! i didn’t even want to watch the departed !!! I can’t forget the look of Tony Leung’s face when he saw his Captain thrown off the building and Leo didn’t deliver the same feelings …. Hollywood kind ruins most Asia movie remake…

  42. 43 Reagan September 21, 2008 at 10:33 am

uh…yeah. but five stars from the Sun isnt saying much. all they usually talk about is some d-lister’s sex tape and fake knockers.

  43. 44 Judoka September 21, 2008 at 10:35 am

I’ve seen it, it’s a dark movie for sure. It will surely effect you with its suspense and leave you sort of depressed for several days to come. Great acting by Kim Yoon Suk, can’t say the same for Ha Jung Woo due to his lackluster role.

  44. 45 Mercedes September 21, 2008 at 12:26 pm

Very great thriller loved every min of it

  45. 46 dotdotdot September 21, 2008 at 1:01 pm

    ive watched this… it’s totally… BORING..

  46. 47 yimnara September 21, 2008 at 2:59 pm

Very good movie, great at maintaining tension. Like somebody else said it’s near up there with “Memories of Murder” – not on par with “Old boy” though – not much is…
Given this is the director’s first movie, many people are looking forward to good things from him. Yikes,he inadvertently set the bar pretty high for himself.

  47. 48 s123 September 21, 2008 at 4:54 pm

    ohh… 5 out of 5.. that good to hear… congratulations…

  48. 49 Fleep♥ September 21, 2008 at 7:56 pm

    @starstarpanda

i’m sure it will keep spreading. i hate those people who try to say it is going to die out.

  49. 50 han jan man September 21, 2008 at 7:58 pm

I haven’t seen the film yet so I don’t have an opinion about it, but I wouldn’t exactly be excited for a 5 star rating from an English tabloid especially the ‘SUN’. What it did for me, however, was become curious about this film so I checked out all the broadsheets(Times, Telegraph, Guardian, etc…) to find out what their reviews were like. They’re not exactly raving for this film but the Times did give it 3 stars. So I said, not too bad! It made me interested to see the film until I saw the review from TimeOut Magazine(the ‘bible’ for reviews if you’re living in London) and they only gave it 2 stars.

I’d still watch this film when I find the time. Reading the reviews I found out that, at least, it is one of the best in its genre. The problem in the west is that they’re only aware of this genre(ultra-violent) coming from Korea. I think they better start checking out that Korea has more to offer.
