With the upcoming return of many pop acts, comparisons are inevitable.
This time around, the battle is between boys men. The return of DBSK after 1.7 years in Japan has caused excitement among fans with their interestingly named title song, “Mirotic”.
Already, within 3 days of its release, “Mirotic” has climbed up to #1 on the KTF Dosirak’s most wanted with over 300,000 CDs preordered. In order to keep up with the demand, the record co had to push back the release date by two days. With so much attention and hype these boys are receiving, Big Bang has their work cut out for them when they return in November.
As of now, the first real battle between the idol groups will transpire on the SBS program “Family Outing”, which will air on October 12 & 19, 2008, where Daesung of Big Bang is part of the cast and Yunho and Junsu of DBSK will appear as guests. And most likely, the boys of DBSK and Big Bang will duke it out for cast member Lee Hyori, who has doted on Daesung all throughout the show’s airing.
Until then, keep your paper and pens out and track these two groups in the battle of the year.
As of now, DBSK is ahead by a point for breaking the highest presale order since the release of Seo Taiji’s 8th album in 2004.

It’ll be a tough battle for Big Bang, because this is such an immense comeback scene for TVXQ!. Big Bang has been doing well in Korea, but for TVXQ!, this is a major comeback in 2 years, and their record sales have broken Korean music industry history, so I think it’ll be difficult for Big Bang to overpower TVXQ! this year.
Plus, a lot of the Big Bang fans were originally die hard TVXQ! fans that stopped following TVXQ!’s activities once they left for Japan, so with their successful comeback image and song, TVXQ! has already re-grasped a lot of those fans.
I’m not saying that one group is better than the other, but in all justice, I think TVXQ! would deserve to win since it’s their comeback after 2 years.
To top it, TVXQ! proves that they’re no longer just an “idol group” with their performance on SBS of their songs - one song was SMP (lipsynched), but the other two were live and absolutely amazing.

DBSG are definitely going to win the Golden Disk awards. I find it weird how MBC suddenly decided to reconcile with SM before DBSG’s activities officially began. Guess there’s a demand and they didn’t want to lose ratings to SBS and KBS.

I’m not going to write anything ‘hateful’ about Big Bang because I love their music too. If they wanna be on par with DBSG they had better bring their best and so do the V.I.P’ers.
It’ll be hard for Big Bang because awards shows start around mid November. I’ll congratulate them if they do snatch a few awards from DBSG. But I won’t if the votes and sales were of people who are just plotting to over throw DBSG. Honestly that’s just sad. Donate the money to charity.

i don’t see how the different genres argument has any bearing over sales. just because one prefers, say hip-hop, over most music doesn’t mean one ONLY listens to hip-hop. and i’m not too convinced that big bang is really that far removed from dbsk…
either way, i get the feeling dbsk will win. there are plenty of factors going for them, the first and foremost being that they’ve kept mad fans waiting for a korean album for a decent amount of time without alienating them. i also get the feeling that if they don’t win, cassiopeia’s going to have a fit.

DBSK really is overrated now. Or maybe the die-hard fans caused me to think that way. In any case, I like both groups but I’m gonna go with Big Bang. Their music is more to my liking and DBSK have been gone for a while so to me they have to prove themselves more than Big Bang does. I like DBSK too but fans should stop thinking that their “gods” are unbeatable.
I bet half the the people who criticize DBSK just criticize them for the sake of it. They’re sick and tired of seeing their faces plastered on the t.v and always in the limelight. What’s worse is that these people criticize DBSK just to make their own favored artist look better.
Take it from the objective standpoint rather than your own narrow-minded perspective. There’s a reason why they got fans in the first place. And I doubt that they garnered all 800,000 individuals of their fanclub, not even including their japanese fanbase BigEast, just by their looks. The fact that they even garnered many fans in a country that is reluctant toward foreigners tells one that they are talented to many people.
Take a look at Love In The Ice for their comeback and tell me they can’t sing. Look at Hey and tell me they can’t dance. Then look at Mirotic and tell me they can’t sing and dance all at the same time.

And TVXQ! has been around and has been keeping their immense popularity (international) for 5+ years now, so people continue to like them because of what’s there.

TVXQ’s comeback has been in 2 years, and their albums is solely dedicated for their dedicated Korean fans who have been awaiting their return. Big Bang finished their 3rd mini-album activities only last week, and the album that’s going to come out in November is going to be released in Japan first, and going to be released aimed at building their Japanese fanbase. As someone said earlier, they’re playing in two completely different playgrounds here!

I love both groups with all my heart but to compare them subjectively is wrong. You can have your opinion on who you think is better but in the end it all comes down to who’s going to sell more. DBSK’s comeback has been a long time coming. The anticipation for their return plus the fact that they have released a pretty solid album will crown them champ when all is said and done.
Big Bang released a very strong mini album but will be away for a while, leaving DBSK to reign in all their glory for a while. By the time they get back DBSK will have appeared on many television programs and created a lasting impression of their humility and charisma.
But only time will tell I suppose.
@Lala: BB has done everything from hip-hop (old songs) to house/techno (majimak insa) to rock (Oh My Friend). They have their own freaking genre with all the elements of music they incorporate into their songs.
For DBSK, all their hits are done by Yoo Young Jin. In YG’s case, they have all the artists making hits for themselves (GD, Teddy, Kush)…
Again, I love both groups, but let’s get realistic here.

Yes, but if we speak technically, Big Bang’s “hit songs” were all under the same genre, that techno-ish pop dance rap. If you listen to all of their other songs, they have compelling songs with multiple genres.
But so does TVXQ!
Have you heard their current album? They’ve even mastered acid jazz, R&B, hip hop, and their usual specialties, ballads with tons of thick, rich vocal harmonies.
So, to be more objective and less subjective from your previous judgment, both bands cover a substantial range of genres.
Of course, their “hits” are more narrowed towards a single genre.

I liked both groups, but I find Big Bang more appealing.
To me, they are what young musicians should be: they write their own music, they have a say in their image, their sound, they produce their own songs, etc. I can respect them because they are who they are, and they’re unapologetic for that.
DBSK, like all of SM’s groups, are just products and it’s getting boring. Mirotic is a decent song, but it’s not even theirs. Album sales and whatnot aren’t that important to me. Quality is way more important and DBSK got old [and unoriginal] very fast.
Besides, DBSK came back and had to change their style for what reason? Now they’re more like a pseudo-Big Bang… aka Shinee. That’s a fail, SM.

How exactly does Big Bang have more talent than DBSK? Seriously, you keep saying DBSK’s “overrated”, “talentless”, “just a pretty face”…but how can that be when I’ve seen them dance such amazing choreography that guys from other countries would enter that dance in competitions? Ok so I went to listen to some Big Bang a little while back to check out what all the hype was about, since I like to do that. I listened to a bunch but only really liked Lies and Haru Haru. Then I realized that they sounded vaguely alike to me and didn’t really stand out apart from each other. Nevermind that, they were good songs. I have nothing against Big Bang, I feel like they have promising vocals and their personal style (as in fashion) is cool. I put them on a level, vocally, just above super junior.
The thing that people who bash DBSK seem to be missing is that, if you look past all the glitter and glitz that SM surrounds them with, they do possess amazing vocal talent. Their range and harmonization is seriously phenomenal. Yes, they do have a very stylized image and they have to keep up an image to be popular but even if they are this way, they couldn’t have become as much as they are without their tremendous amount of vocal skills. And fans, and even anti-fans, can see that they work really hard to get what the have. They’re not “just” pretty boys paid to strut around stage, they have talent.

@ochibii: I think it’s unfair that people are dismissing DBSK’s talent, stating that it’s all “based on looks” … but you’re practically doing the same thing to Big Bang by saying that they can’t compare and judging them based on their images (i.e. Omarion, gangsta.) A bit hypocritical, no?
As for hardships, BOTH groups have endured their own trials to get where they are, even if they’re not similar situations. You think the Big Bang members got to debut without rough times? How about Seungri getting cut and having to prove himself in a second chance? Youngbae and GD’s years of training since they were 13? Sure, these cases may not be as severe as DBSK’s poverty issues, but the amount of strain was probably the same when both groups gave it their all just so they could become “idols.”
I think all of this is useless. DBSK has already won because of the cassies, anyways. Talents aside, it’s down to quantity — not quality…

Anyway, why try to compare the groups? They’re so different. One is more pop with strong vocals/dancing, the other is more mainstream with songs that are easy to sing along to and play well at a bar. Totally different.

DBSK is OVERRATED!
I think Big Bang’s music is FAR more universal. I have non-asian guy friends who never even heard kpop before, and they find BB’s songs catchy and addictive, but other boy bands “fruity.”
I’m still a fan of both groups, but I just think Big Bang is a bit more interesting since they’ve actually DARED (oh no) to venture out of the boy band world.
^ by universal I mean that it would appeal to more people around the world, not that there’s more overseas fans… DBSK definitely takes that.

I’m confused …….
DBSK is VERY TALENTED……but their SONGS just don’t do it for me. Big Bang is quite talented too & their songs show more hype & diversity, so I’m leaning towards BB on this one.
I agree with Stephanie, BB always brings something new to the music scene. DBSK’s new album had hints of other genres in their songs but all I heard was POP.
I also like Big Bang b/c they didn’t conform to the kpop world, they made ppl CONFORM to them.
First of all I would like to say that these are two of my favorite groups. Second, this whole comparing and “epic battle” thing is really dumb. I’ve seen TVXQ compared to Shinee (whom I also love) and now to Big Bang? As someone stated before, TVXQ has been in the business longer so it is gonna be normal for them to be more well-known. Big Bang is still kinda new, but I am pretty sure that their fanbase will grow to be the size of the bigger fanbases (i.e. Cassiopeia, ELF, etc.)
Another thing is the term “overrated”. What makes TVXQ overrated exactly? Is it because they have been in the news more than usual? Of course that is gonna happen when you are promoting something. And since SM is a powerhungry company, you will see them on tv more often. I am pretty sure that Big Bang may be on tv more often when they promote too. Are you gonna call them overrated too? And since I have known TVXQ longer, it is bound to happen that I am gonna listen to them more than any other group. But I don’t go ga-ga over looks (even though that may be what got me listening to them and all Korean music in fact). If you take the time to look at fancams, interviews, and the random stuff that they do, I am pretty sure you will see how they really are. So fans of TVXQ, take a look at stuff on Big Bang, and fans of Big Bang to take a look at stuff on TVXQ and see how both groups really are…and tell me if they are still overrated. (Although the camera really tells you nothing unless you meet them in person).
I realize that there is gonna be haters and antis on both sides of this argument (and I hate to see everyone invovled be hurt in one way or another), but it is really unecessary to fuel the fire with things like this.
Ah well….like anyone really cares what I say. TVXQ FIGHTING!!!! BIG BANG FIGHTNING!!!! I hope to meet both groups one day! :3

I love Big Bang’s music… as much as I love TVXQ’s. In terms of songwriting and musical talents… I’m favoring Big Bang… but when it comes to presence… TVXQ wins hands down. I’d like to see more input from TVXQ for their albums instead of SM hiring people to do it…
But anyhoo… the question is who will be triumphant… I believe TVXQ already has a leg up… and we all know Big Bang don’t really have the longest legs in the K-pop industry ^_^

I have friends who don’t even like kpop who enjoy BB songs, at the same time they think DBSK’s song sound too generic. Song wise BB wins. Crazy fanbase wise DBSK will win. And all of u arguing and dissing each group are only hurting ur own cause. for one thing I’m seriously annoyed about DBSK because of all their fangirls going they are gods, they are the best blah blah. The more u guys say stupid stuff like that the more ppl will dislike ur idols. Thats to both fan groups btw.

I completely agree with you there. Of course, being able to compose your own music makes it a cherry on the top, but it by no means defines what a true singer/artist should be judged as.
Plus, the whole “they compose their own songs” don’t really put anything on top of TVXQ! because every member has amazing musicianship.
I’m not sure about Big Bang, but in TVXQ!, Yoochun/Junsu/Jaejoong all play the piano marvelously (Yoochun actually self-taught himself). Junsu has composed at least 3 songs that I know (his solo, “My Page” and the ballad from the 3rd album, “You Only Love”, and the amazing “Rainy Day” the Japanese single).
Yunho also composed an entire song and wrote the lyrics for “Speaksman”.
We all know Changmin has written lyrics for about 5 songs now (”Love in the Ice”, the song from the winter SM album, etc.)
I’m also leaving out a lot more that each of the members composed/wrote lyrics for since they’re not at the top of my memory, but as you can see…
When it comes down to comparing the two bands’ musicianship, it actually might hurt Big Bang’s side to say that they’re better since they “do their own songs”, since the only member that really does any real output is G-Dragon. TVXQ! would definitely be a lot more rounded in terms of musicianship.
Also, no other successful boy band at the moment has TVXQ!’s specialty of being able to harmonize a 4 part harmony to Jaejoong’s melody, IMPROMPTU.
There are videos on YouTube where MC’s request a random song, and Jaejoong starts singing the melody, and the other four boys figure out the 4 part harmony, RIGHT there on the spot.
If you’ve ever taken choir or have had ANY kind of singing experience, you know that kind of ability doesn’t come easily.
Plus, if every single artist wrote every single song that he/she made, we would be having a lot of composers who would be jobless. Plus, don’t forget that the quality of music in general may be lower if every artist had to compose his own song - after all, that is the profession of the composer, no?
I mean, don’t know how many Jpop listeners there are, but you know the story with Utada Hikaru and Hamasaki Ayumi. Utada composes all her songs, but that doesn’t mean they are all better than Hamasaki’s, right? Both have amazing songs. Same goes with Big Bang and TVXQ!
And as for the rap, that’s really subjective. A lot of people say that TVXQ! raps very well, and some say they’re bad. Big Bang gets more positive rap reviews, since that’s their main genre, but I have a lot of friends who also say TOP’s scratchy and low rap voice is disturbing more than sounding good.
So rap is really subjective. In my opinion, if you can get it on the rhythm and get all the words out and down, AND make it sound good, then it’s down. And that goes for TVXQ!
Singing is a bit different, since there are a lot more components to it, like hitting the right note, vibrato, air support, intonation, vowel/consonant use, and HARMONIES (TVXQ!’s best specialty).
Big Bang and DBSK is in different kind of music. I think both of them are winner in their own genre. the current DBSK now already very big and strong and I’m sure sonner or later Big Bang will also the same as they also got talent so just say that it is a draw hehehe
All the battling has started with everyone’s comments, even though the awards are still some time away.
I do not deny that both group have talent. Definitely have talent. DBSK can sing and dance, and BB can compose, sing and dance, though not as well as DBSK.
I just think that everyone should not wear their coloured spectacles when they view these two groups. Both groups have a fair chance of winning as musicians, but unfortunately several factors do affect this chance. I like BB, but SM does a hell of a job promoting DBSK (ever since their debut), so naturally, DBSK has a larger fanbase, and thus a higher chance of winning. In my country, BB is unknown to the music scene here while DBSK reigns all around, again to the credit of SM’s promotional activities. I guess this is where all the overrated comment arise from.
Well, I hope both groups do win an equal share of the awards, just to make sure they understand that their music is appreciated and loved, as well to award them as musician for their dedication. It should not turn into a battle of who is ‘god’ or not. It will be better if the same awards could be awarded to both, then it will stop all this nonsense about who should deserve it more.
