Bae Yong-joon is the face for “The Faceshop”

Bae Yong-joon will be lending his face to Korean cosmetics and skincare brand, “The Faceshop,” on a 1 year contract. The ajummified Hallyu actor was chosen for his legions of fans all over Asia.  If the Faceshop wants to appeal to an older crowd of women who are willing to buy anything of his, then they made the right choice. However, if the brand wants younger and more hip customers, they have completely missed the boat.

Beginning in November. Bae Yong-joon will model for the Faceshop’s 5th Anniversary advertisements.

Lee Bo-young is the model for the women’s skincare and makeup for The Faceshop.

Kwon sang woo should be more suitable than him!

  3. 3 JJ October 1, 2008 at 12:45 pm

Aww….how the hell could they dump KSW? Just because he got married they’ll afraid it’ll turn all the ahjummas/obasans off?

That sucks. I’m never buying stuff from them ever again.

    kenri1,

i’m not talking about those nonsense internet polling, i’m talking about the real survey conducted by a well known and established research agency in Korea. If it’s an internet polling, i’m sure byj wil win hands down, seeing how his ahjumma fans will vote for him every 5 seconds.

    here’s the link….you have to scroll down a bit…
    http://www.soompi.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=868&st=5320

i’m not hating him or anything, i don’t even care about him, i just hate it when his fans keep telling as if he’s the greatest korean celeb when in actual there are so many other korean actors who are more well loved and respected other than him.

  6. 6 Really? October 1, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Of course YJ fans believes that he is the greatest Korean actor,
as you believe there are others who are greater.

I also understand your bitterness towards YJ and his fans.
It just happened that collectively, YJ fans are more powerful and
    are more passionate and supportive.

Go ahead, support the actor/artist you like.
Show to the world that BYJ is not the greatest Korean actor.
But of course, you would need a stronger force to do that.
    You cannot do that alone.
If there are more people like you believe who believes that
BYJ is not worthy at all, then you have no problem.

However in every game or contest, the majority wins.
No other polls could ever attest to the fact that BYJ is
Leading is a sure winner based on the actual figures
not the figures that can be easily fabricated.

I’m also sorry to tell you, but BYJ fans have better things to do
than stay in front of the computer the whole day to vote.

  7. 7 Really? October 1, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Hey, thanks wei wei. This poll is very reliable because the people who voted are the experts in their own field, in short “Professionals” not just insensitive and fanatic fans.

I think people should talk with more sensibility, not based on bias opinions. It’s the advantage of the advancement of Information Technology. It’s very fortunate that we can get information in a matter of seconds.

  8. 8 ghjhg October 1, 2008 at 3:14 pm

he is powerful, because of his money, so what? i don’t think a mere list produced by a magazine could represent what the koreans as a whole think. A well planned conducted survey is surely a better way to find out people’s favor towards a certain party. i wonder how, with a few lousy movies and lousy dramas (except for hotelier) he can land at the top spot, above those CEOs and presidents. it’s just unlogical to think about. for all we know, with his money, he probably owns the magazine company….influential???err…sorry, no one in korea talks about him anymore, so how can he be influential?

okay, i won’t waste my time talking about this man anymore…i probably shouldn’t even commented about him in the first place, but sometimes it’s just irks me when his fans keep telling people as if he’s the greatest and as if he’s the only actor ever contributed to the economy of korea…

  9. 9 Really? October 1, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Well dear, aren’t you telling and showing people that BYJ is somebody to waste their time with? This is what you are doing. You can’t accept the fact that BYJ doesn’t need to work his butt out like other stars in order to maintain his popularity for more than a decade now. Other stars can’t to that. They will accept projects left and right cos they fear that they’ll be forgotten. That is a fact in Korea. But in YJ’s case, there’s not need for him to do that. His mere presence is enough to stir the consciousness of the people in Korea. Other stars can do that because he is a REAL STAR, a class of his own.

  10. 10 Really? October 1, 2008 at 4:24 pm

Here’s how BYJ was chosen as th emost influential entertainment for the benefit of @ghjhg and he doesn’t own
any newspaper or magazine because he hates the media.

    From star news 8/19/2008

BYJ became ‘The most influential entertainer’ chosen by 1000 experts in various fields.

As a result of a poll on ‘Who moves Korea’ among 1000 experts in various fields (professors, politicians, businessmen, people in cultural business and artist) by Sisa (current affairs) Journal, a weekly magazine for current affairs, from past 5 to 9, BYJ was selected to the first place as ‘the most influential entertainer’.

BYJ took the first place by getting 16.6%. Following him, singer Seo Taeji, who made a recent comeback took the second place by getting 15.2%. Bi(14.9%) and Lee Hyori(14.1%) competed for the third and fourth place, respectively.

  11. 11 Really? October 1, 2008 at 4:29 pm

The list given by wei wei is the complete list of
Most Powerful and Influential People In The Korean Entertainment Industry Top 100. The list I posted
above shows who are in the top 100 among the
    entertainers.

This is what you call “well planned conducted survey”.
Not a poll where one can vote a thousand times.

  12. 12 Really? October 1, 2008 at 5:28 pm

I’ve checked the link you posted above. I’m aware of this and this is for Most Popular Stars Of 2nd Half Of 2008 based on 1,300 citizens of all ages. I understand that JDG and other stars are popular with ppl of all ages. But this is not a representative number compare to the whole population of Korea. YJ fans belongs to the more mature bracket, and I can understand the result of this poll.

But to completely discredit YJ for being an influential figure in Korea is unfair. BYJ is on top of the most popular k-actor overseas and that’s a fact. We are not talking about Korea alone. His influence is not limited only in Korea, even beyond his role as an actor. He’s spreading Korean culture overseas and that is ten times fold more important than being popular in Korea.

  13. 13 Really? October 1, 2008 at 5:47 pm

But i could see, he is still in the top ten of that poll. considering that he isn’t active the whole of 2008, that’s still an impressive feat. That explains it all and i rest my case.

  14. 14 fraulein October 1, 2008 at 6:28 pm

I respect BYJ for what he has achieved but I can NEVER see myself as an admirer, let alone a fan.

    He is just too. Womanly.

  15. 15 fraulein October 1, 2008 at 6:31 pm

Isn’t his appointment as Face Shop endorser a little late? His star seems to be fading and he was at the peak of his game 4, even 5 yrs ago.

Shldn’t the contract be awarded to up & comers like Jang Geun-suk, Kang Ji-hwan etc? Or the likes of Kim Rae-won or Jang Hyuk who has been flying under the radar of late.

  16. 16 koko October 1, 2008 at 6:50 pm

i think face shop dropped ksw out decause his popularity is coming dowen
they chose byj because of his popularity across asia
but by the way i am suprise that there are peaple who hate byj so much like ghjhg !!!
i m not korean but i watch korean drama and sraes news from internet and i think byj is so papular and beloved so much from korean peaple

  17. 17 Yikes October 1, 2008 at 10:37 pm

    @fraulein

Plain and Simple. They are not sellable.
    The company will lose money.
They’ve studied the market and they are the experts.

  18. 18 shameera410 October 1, 2008 at 11:13 pm

Eek…I see ahjummas running to the face shop! :D …haha!! Actually he has pretty good skin and I guess he deserves it :D ..but I really find him not attractive at all

  19. 19 valrhona October 1, 2008 at 11:18 pm

TFS could have gotten other actors to endorse their products but they chose BYJ over the others w/ cheaper talent fee because they believe in his pulling power.

One example of what I am talking about SEI mineral water that he brought to Japan. It is only available in the US but when fans saw him drinking it fans ordered boxes to be shipped to their country. SEI company was even surprise by this and even for request to have a branch in Japan.

I read in soompi that his contract for TFS is only w/ 1-year. His fans have mixed reaction over his acceptance. But from what I read again in soompi the theme of TFS must be the reason why he accepted the offer. The theme is about environment.

  20. 20 Ajuma October 1, 2008 at 11:42 pm

“…i probably shouldn’t even commented about him in the first place”

    Hmmm that rings really true…

FYI,here’s some more fun facts on BYJ, a few random paragraphs from the Korea Herald, if that doesn’t reflect South Korea’s opinion, then I don’t know what does :

    The Korea Herald
    Wed,Sept.10,2008

Herald publishes in-depth book on Korean Wave

The Korea Herald has published ” Korean Wave “a book designed to offer a firsthand account of the fever for Korean popular culture in Asian countries and beyond.

The book includes 38 essays, most of which were written by foreign journalists and scholars who describe and analyze the reception of Korean pop culture in their own country.

” Korean Wave ” has 5 chapters. In the introduction, Sung Sang-yeon, a professor in the Department of Musicology at the University of Vienna in Austria discusses how the Korean Wave started and why it has spread throughout Asia and other parts of the world.

The essays in the first chapter provide a sketch of Korean Wave in 20 countries, including Philippines, Taiwan,Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, China, Turkey, Egypt, Iran, the United States, Australia,Argentina, Spain and Poland.

The articles in the third chapter profile some of the key players in the Korean Wave, including Bae Yong-joon an actor who is adored by overseas fans of Korean dramas and films. Robert Cagle, who teaches Cinema at the University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign calls him “the face of South Korea”.

I wonder if any other stars has been mentioned as ” The face of South Korea ” ??

Oh here’s more , a few more paragraphs, BYJ’s been recognized Internationally since 2004 it seems :

    NEWSWEEK INTERNATIONAL EDITION

    Celebrity: A Hunk o’ Love
If his television role brings out the screaming teen in middle-aged women, that’s OK with Bae Yong Joon
    Newsweek International

May 3 issue – Asian women are flipping for 31-year-old South Korean film and TV star Bae Yong Joon. They have mobbed Bae in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and named a hybrid orchid after him in Singapore. Inspired by Bae, Japanese women are taking up the study of Korean language and history. In his first movie, “Untold Scandal,” a Korean remake of “Dangerous Liaisons” set in 18th-century Korea, Bae’s portrayal of a Casanova earned critical acclaim. His TV drama series, “Winter Sonata,” is an Asiawide hit. Bae spoke with NEWSWEEK’s Hideko Takayama in Tokyo. Excerpts:

There are hundreds of women downstairs waiting for a glimpse of you. How do you feel about that?
More and more TV dramas deal with transient pleasures. “Winter Sonata” is different. This Korean drama makes the viewers remember their first love, a kind of genuine love that they had experienced a long time ago.

Many of your fans are married and middle-aged. As a young man, how do you feel about being a center of their attention?
It is a difficult question. Of course, age and nationality have nothing to do with falling in love or admiring someone. I think it is the role that I play in the drama that is making them remember the kind of warm and pure feelings that they once felt for men when they were young. I meet a lot of fans who are married and have families. When I look into their eyes what I see are teenage girls. If I am making them awaken to such long-lost passion, I must say that I feel very honored…

    © 2004 Newsweek, Inc.

You may argue that this is an old article, but the first one sure isn’t. I like other Korean actors too [regardless their age], not only BYJ. But I’ve never put down any actors like some here are doing.

  21. 21 megane October 2, 2008 at 2:38 am

…TFS can choose whoever they want and they want him right now so what’s the problem?…If they think he’s bankable then who are we to question?…next year maybe another face will be chosen…that’s how the game goes and so life goes on for all of us…

…people argue on everything about him, maybe he’s a so-so actor, and maybe he’s not that good-looking, and maybe he’s taking feminine hormones but who cares…the thing is, he’s like a magnet that pulls people (note: rich and not so rich Ahjummas who can afford them) to buy anything and everything that he endorses and that, my dears, is why he was chosen by TFS.

  22. 22 Constructive Critic October 2, 2008 at 7:13 am

    @ megane

It is interesting how you mentioned, “he’s like a magnet that pulls people (note: rich and not so rich Ahjummas who can afford them) to buy anything and everything that he endorses and that, my dears, is why he was chosen by TFS.”

I recently came across an article that was about a 52 year old ajumma that was arrested for embezzlement. She first withdrew money from other people’s account so that she could pay off her father-in-laws’ hospitals but then later continued this law-breaking habit to support her “Bae Yong Joon fan lifestyle.” She traveled to Tokyo whenever he was there and she brought all products related to him.

  23. 23 Constructive Critic October 2, 2008 at 7:15 am

Now I am not saying that he made her do it. I am just saying, it is amazing as to how far some fans go to show their love and support for their favorite celebs.

So for all those people who believe that The Face Shop will lose customers…it might in some demographics but it will certain gain some in others.

  24. 24 Sierra October 2, 2008 at 10:43 am

Noooo…. preferred Kwon Sang Woo!!! Why can’t he peddle cosmetics as a married man??? This is crazzzeee!!!

  25. 25 cdnpoint October 2, 2008 at 12:12 pm

Ah, KSW fans? I understood that KSW will still be doing ads for Faceshop. BYJ is contracted for ads during the anniversary year. So both actors have their own campaigns.

  26. 26 Fair October 2, 2008 at 10:08 pm

BYG the man with golden touch! aren’t you lucky Korean people, you’ve got this guy who attracts people from all over the world to come to Korea!

Love you byg! everyone will buy products that you endorse!
Australia is not far from Korea! love to see baeland

  27. 27 Ebony October 2, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Why do people keep hating on BYJ, is he that bad!!!!He does have nice skin for it. If he would take his hair out of the ponytail and just made a hairstyle with it still long he would look alot better and not keep getting labels as girly, feminine, etc.

I just became familliar with BYJ this year because I just didn’t see his appeal (maybe it’s because of the nerd look he has been sporting all these years XD). Maybe the nerd look is coming back in style in Korea XD!!!!!

I took one look at his 2004 photobook and knew why he was so famous with us women, it’s because his body is actually better than KSW who started the whole “best body” movement in Korea so of course they will endorse him!!!! It can’t be because of his looks because I think Song Seung looks a billion times better but I’m probably biased.

Hopefully his body still looks like that LOL

    BYJ Fighting!!!

  28. 28 Silvia October 4, 2008 at 9:57 am

He looks very good. He has the best smile. BYJ is so famous and the best,so handsome….will support him forever. America waits for him

He looks very good. He has the best smile. BYJ is so famous and the best, so handsome….will support him forever. America waits for him.

I couldn’t agree more with everything Silvia says. We American fans love Yong Joon-a, because he loves us as part of his family members. The fact that he is gorgeous is just icing on the cake. As for the long hair, this “part-Native-American” says: the longer the better, up or down is fine, too. God bless, Yong Joon-a!

  29. 30 Constructive Critic October 4, 2008 at 2:52 pm

The CEO of The Face Shop, Song Ki Ryong said, “The reason that we selected him as a model was because he has a big influence as a Hallyu star, and he gives a great image from his established acting ability and intensive self-management. We expect to insure our company’s position leading the domestic and overseas cosmetic market through the advertisement strategy with Bae Yong Joon.”

  30. 31 Constructive Critic October 4, 2008 at 2:53 pm

There, now you have heard it straight from the horse’s mouth.

  31. 32 gemini October 6, 2008 at 11:08 pm

not only because he has a big influence as a hallyu star but BYJ has the X FACTOR, that’s why he is a superstar…and a great person.

  32. 33 Fair October 7, 2008 at 1:34 pm

I couldn’t agree more Gemini! He has this amazing appeal – I think its his sincerity especially when he smiles and laugh!

I adore him! He will a good person to be attached to that product – hopefully they will have it in Australia!

  33. 34 gemini October 7, 2008 at 2:45 pm

So many of us adore him Fair….you’re right with his amazing appeal and his unexplainable charm. There’s something about him that you just can’t find a reason to like him.

  34. 35 AAA October 8, 2008 at 1:18 pm

WHAT DO YOU MEAN HE IS SO FAKE? GOSH! He is a sincere person. oh well no one is forcing you to like him……

  36. 37 phuong October 17, 2008 at 9:59 am

Hi Koreans . Mr BYJ is going to receive cultural Award on oct 18 ,2008 and will be Ambassador for K tourism 2000-2002 period. Do you think Korean intellectuals make a mistake by choosing him as a face representing for Korean culture and beauty ? if you think so ,please continue to bash him more so no foreigners like us bother to visit Korea anymore . Thank you and have a nice weekend .

  37. 38 Ajuma October 20, 2008 at 5:16 am

So true, Phuong !! Let me elaborate with a few excerpts…

    From Korea Beat :
    Tuesday, October 14, 2008

On the 14th October at 10.30 am Bae Yong-jun was appointed Ambassador for Korean Tourism at the Lotte Hotel in So-gong dong which was hosting the 35th Tourism Day event, and the ‘2010-2012 –Year to Visit Korea’ promotional function.

This function was sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korean Tourism Association, and the Year to Visit Korea Committee.

    From The Korea Times :
    10-19-2008

Hallyu (Korean wave) star Bae Yong-joon has been given the Hwa-Gwan Order of Culture Merit by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism at an event celebrating the 2008 Culture Day.

Bae, 35, was given the honor as he has continuously devoted his work and himself to promote Korean culture to the world through dramas, his restaurant business and other cultural activities.

    ——
I wonder who Popseoul&friends are going to bash now in connection to this recent development? The Korean Government? Gee,I’m not Korean….I live far away from BYJ. But I care about Korea cos of BYJ.

  38. 39 CA October 20, 2008 at 3:05 pm

Congrats to BYJ, he deserved all that coz he’s the best!!!! such a wonderful person inside and out that’s why he’s got so many blessings coming his way now….

  39. 40 Angie November 9, 2008 at 6:36 pm

I don’t buy TFS products, I don’t care who TFS choose to be the face for TFS. They are just making monies only so they have to use their power to get peoples out there to buy their products. So if BYJ can do that for the TFS then it is.
For those who are buying TFS products as yourself these questions.

Are you buying it cause the products really works?
    or
Are you buying it cause the face for the TFS is a popular man,
hansome, has lots of monies and etc?……..if so how do you know if he uses the products too?……..you only see him in pictures and not seeing him close up in person?…….what if the pictures you see him has been fixed or he has so much make on his face before photograpy it before is display to everyone to see it?……..how do you know for sure he has a great skin? can’t you see its all about making monies its just an advertisement. What a waste of time to agrument just let them do there work.

I am a fan of both KWS and BYJ. I really praise on their performance of acting really liked some of their dramas.
Liked the characters that had play in their dramas and movies. I belive some will disliked them a bit an some will so love them and going crazy. But do remember its their job acting is their career. To gain popularity and fame they have to in away look up to their fans…but they are actors they can charm any one????????and etc………but popular peeps don’t have much freedom as us.
so peeps leave them alone let them do their job their things. Don’t waste your monies on products that don’t work on you but if does then buy a bunch?…………
Don’t focuse on these peeps here so much and focus on youself and whats best for ya.

To BYJ keep up the wonderful work do what you do best and keep on doing it. NO matter what other says you are you and half the world is watching you and they will keep on watching……so you better make yourself be seen more and more………and love that hair so don’t cut it yet.

To KWS even tho your not the face of TFS anymore….I know your fans out there still want to see you more too so hope to see more of you.

Warm wishes and best of lucky to everyone.

I am a Filipino and we also have TFS branches here in the Philippines. I never wished buying in TFS but since BYJ became the endorser I also became the number one TFS customer…

I love BYJ. I never liked any Filipino stars, American stars nor Korean stars before. I did not even bother to care about Korean soaps until Jumong & The Legend came. So, now, there’s only one person that caught my attention and that is Bae Yong Joon. He’s been the wallpaper of my PC and cellphone (would you believe it?) since September08!

Everything about him is just great… I love “The Legend”, even watched it 3 times the past year, gosh, cant get enough of him! He is just the BEST!!

i am a BYJ fan from the Philippines. I’ve watched most of the movies and dramas he had. I’ve seen his posters in Face Shop. I hope he would come and visit the Philippines. To Bae Yong Jun, take care and God bless.
