Paying final respects to Choi Jin-shil……

Choijinshil_funeral

The entertainment community is reeling from another shocking loss.

Choi Jin-shil took her own life on October 2nd. No one would have thought something so tragic could have happened. Looking back on the day before her death, Choi Jin-shil went about her work as usual. She had a photoshoot at a Kangnam studio in the afternoon and went out for drinks with her manager in Shinsa-dong. After drinking 3 bottles of soju, she told her manager, “I want to die.” At home in her Jamwon-dong home, she told her mother, “I am sad and disappointed in people. Why do they bother me like this? I have nothing to do with the loans…” At 12 pm, she went to bed. At 4 am, her mother discovered that the bathroom door was locked. At 6am, a locksmith unlocks the door and her body is discovered. At 7:34, the police arrived on the scene.

With the recent deaths of Ahn Jae-hwan, and Lee Eon, the entertainment community has lost another star. We hope that there will be no more of these type of tragic losses.

And we hope that Choi Jin-shil can finally rest in peace.

sometimes i wonder if the paparazzi has gone over the edge or smth.
i mean judging frm what she said before her suicide,it seems like its the constant reports linking her to the loans that tipped her over the edge.

its sad to lose yet another great actor…RIP.

  17. 17 smileyTART October 3, 2008 at 6:49 pm

to see how hard it hit the celebrities heightens the sadness cause you get a glimpse of how loved she was.

    So sad!

    :(

I couldn’t sleep all day yesterday but finally slept today. I have no relation with her and I’ve only seen part of her “Last Scandal” drama and now I’m not so sure if I can finish it with a smile. I really liked Choi Jin Sil and I’m still sad to know that she has passed away so early.

God bless her, her children, family, friends, and the Korean entertainment industry.

I know how it is to lose a parent at such a young age!

    Aja fighting! :)

does anyone know why life in korea promt people to commit suicide like that? this is very sad. r.i.p.

  26. 26 jayR October 3, 2008 at 8:54 pm

    this is really sad.

i hope that people in korea especially those netizens including media who keep on maliciously accusing people of something in which they do not have any proofs to mellow down on demeaning and accusing people who they don’t know.

suicide rate in korean has gone up drastically. it’s the 4th highest cause of death according to ohmynews online.

i really hope that what i read is true, that the government of korea will soon be implementing stricter laws on netizens and media (punitive measures involving libel on the Internet) to put an end to malicous online comments.

i hope this will be an eye-opener to people especially to those netizens and media who only know how to make accusations and spread unfounded rumors.

punitive measures involving libel on the Internet.

  27. 27 roflcopter22 October 3, 2008 at 9:33 pm

So many people feeling sorry for her, but why?

She killed herself when she has two kids to take care of. What about the fact that those kids have to go the rest of their life without their mother because she took the easy way out and acted rash and selfish?

Jesus Christ, yeah it sucks that a celebrity killed herself. Yeah, society puts pressure on them. But it’s on everybody in society, and it’s up to the individual to make decisions.

She choose to end her pain over taking care of her children.

That’s what you all should be sick about.

RIP Choi Jin Shil. It seemed like just yesterday when I watched your hit drama with Ahn Jae Wook “Star in my heart” …at that time i thought “this lady has a really kind face and gentle feeling (maybe an innocent look?)…”
just hearing the song “forever” by AJW on youtube reminds me of you

  31. 31 ria October 3, 2008 at 9:53 pm

Roflcopter, you obviously werent raised by a depressed, suicidal mother. Trust me, ending her pain may have been the best thing she did for her children in a long time.

  32. 32 parker October 3, 2008 at 10:06 pm

WOW who would’ve thought? Now i’m most concerned about Jung Sun-hee because if she cracks, anything can happen. People should watch out for her.

  33. 33 nanakorobiyaoki October 3, 2008 at 10:07 pm

She wasn’t in her right state of mind when she did this, no one who commits suicide is, so no one has the right to judge. When a person falls into depression, which is a disease, when left untreated that does turn as deadly as cancer, the last thing they want to think about it getting help. I hope something positive comes out of these sad events, that people will start taking such signs from those around them seriously and urge them to get help.

  34. 34 ROSEMARIE MADARANG October 3, 2008 at 10:18 pm

MY HEART IS SO BROKEN RIGHT NOW…I AM A FILIPINA AND I HAVE WATCHED “A ROSY LIFE”‘ AND SINCE THEN I ALREADY LIKED HER TOO MUCH….SHE IS SUCH A VERY OUTSTANDING ACTRESS….

AS SOON AS I KNEW THE NEWS….I FELT LIKE MY WORLD STOPPED….I WAS SO SHOCKED……

SHE SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT OF HER TWO DAUGHTERS……

THAT WASN’T THE ONLY WAY OUT TO ANY PROBLEM…..

THIS IS THE MOST AWFUL NEWS I HAVE EVER HEARD….

    MAY U REST IN PEACE….=CHOI-JIN SIL=

  35. 35 TVXQBBLOVE October 3, 2008 at 10:24 pm

RIP Choi Jin Sil. I still can’t believe she left like that. I have sorrows for her passing but only sympathy for her kids. She didn’t think of her kids? If not, then I just lost a lot of my respect for her.
Jung Sun Hee, wow, what a tough month for her. She’s already so skinny and pale. Keep your chin up.

  36. 36 seoul86 October 3, 2008 at 10:28 pm

    to ria: are you dumb?
i mean for real, i guess you do the same and leave your children behind? i feel sorry she died but she made that choice. it’s a cop out to do such a thing. i’m sorry i really don’y get korean entertainment, you got all of asia in your finger tips and you want to throw it away?? she was beautiful, had a great life and had 2 wonderful children and then throws it away? everybody gotta go thru some rough times to see a better tomorrow. ending her pain, my butt! what about the pain she gave her children now because of this? like i said i feel sorry this happened, but at the same time, i don’t. call me cruel, evil whatever. my life isn’t the greatest but i cherish every good time i come across. well let the hate mail begin!

  37. 37 ROSEMARIE MADARANG October 3, 2008 at 10:30 pm

LIFE IS FULL OF SUFFERINGS, WE CAN NEVER LIVE PERFECT….

BUT THAT’S THE REASON WHY THE LORD GAVE US WISDOM TO RULE ON EVERYTHING AND FIGHT OVER….

LET US ALL PRAY THAT NO ONE WILL EVER BE INTO THIS KIND ANYMORE…

  40. 40 SP October 3, 2008 at 10:35 pm

    roflcopter22,

Why? How would you feel if you lose a love one? Most of these people on POPSEOUL may not know her but atleast we are showing respect for those who have passed. Again, we shouldn’t criticize wrongly of someone because we don’t know what they have been through.

I’m against suicide and to be honest, I don’t quite understand it but I don’t find it necessary to use it against him or her, or in this case to Choi Jin Sil. Through this tragic times, we all need to come together and not the other way around!

  41. 41 jung sung-hee October 3, 2008 at 11:09 pm

the latest photos of jung sung-hee are encouraging.
she looks the most sober in the past month.

maybe choi jin-sil’s death snapped her out of it. like she’s the only one left to be brave about her life. she can’t join the rest of them this way.

    (maybe just my wishful thinking?)

she’s practically walking by herself. so that’s good sign.

  42. 42 funkoffan October 3, 2008 at 11:10 pm

Korea has, annually, one of the highest suicide rates in the OECD list of countries. It must be a national mentality for it to be so high. It has become so commmonplace that you can often hear people excalim “I want to die” in their native tongue over trivial matters (I am aware that this is not a declaration but it is worrying that it is used so often and easily). Yes, I’m aware that people go through tough times, but I agree with seoul86 and roflcopter22, she was a mother and should have thought about her children and family. Yes, I’m also aware that we don’t know the full story and that she must have been severely depressed to even be in that state of mind. The Korean government should really step in and try to provide more preventative measures for depressed people here. I think people should be respectful but they really should be praying for her children and family - not just her.

  43. 43 oh dear... October 3, 2008 at 11:24 pm

everyone has been so shaken up by this, and rightfully so. the Korean internet community is so messed up - look at how many people it has driven to depression and suicide.

RIP 최진실. looking at these photos makes me want to cry… esp. Jung Sun-Hee - my heart just goes out to her… imagine losing a husband as well as a friend within the span of a month…

    she will be greatly missed.

in Korea talking with a psychiatrist and seeking emotional help should not be shunned or a taboo. If seeking psychiatric help was not as condemned in Korea as in the U.S., maybe celebs and other individuals would think twice about committing suicide.

  49. 49 anni October 4, 2008 at 12:30 am

I can’t help it, I tried not to leave any comments at all regarding the passing of the Kcelebs.
But the more I read, the more I can’t resist. I do not get why she chose to ended up her own life. specially if she had nothing to do with the loaned. She fought hard for her two young kids, and at the end she did this???? like? I hope She Rest In Peace, but I just don’t think that she will. She must be suffering right now to just to think about her kids. poor children and parent. I hope they will grow up hating soju. (Soju = many mistakes and unresponsible act ) My head’s tired from shaking left and right. I just really do not understand how someone, who can fight custody and all those stuff chose a bad ending like this.

  50. 50 butters October 4, 2008 at 12:40 am

When Koreans do things, they do things in extremes without thinking rationally.

When someone says “this particular food is good for health”, the whole nation follows the trend and that food becomes extinct the next day. When a middle school student decided to do a candle lit protest, the whole nation joined like it was World Cup 2002 parade. When netizens got together and threatened the nation to watch and support D-War (movie), the whole nation went to see it and supported it even though it was one of the worst movies ever produced–and if you were honest in criticizing it, you were questioned of your nationalism. When you see a celebrity wear a particular fashion (Suh In-Young’s bowl cut), the whole nation follows the trend. When there is a popular phrase or dance (ie TELL ME, speaking English), the whole nation learns it and for those who don’t, you become an outcast. Every parent sends their child to English Hakwons just to fit in with the rest of the society. When your friends look good by wearing expensive clothes or doing plastic surgery, you have this extreme obligation to do the same.

Should I go on or have you had enough? It seems to be that the Koreans have adapted the Western culture of things, but due to their difference and uniqueness, they are quite not getting it and using it to proper use.

  51. 51 butters October 4, 2008 at 12:43 am

^^^But of course with that, it can be used to good use. Just see how much they have modernized from the 50’s. Ethiopia used to send aids to us! Only a country like Korea and its strong people could overcome such obstacle. So pick your poison.

  56. 56 asianromance October 4, 2008 at 1:16 am

they seriously leave biting words that can emotionally tear someone apart. there may have been tons of them that wrote things that hit her deep down. an example of this are the comments we even leave up on popseoul. people need to stop fcking criticizing the celebrities. it’s their fcking life!!! we don’t care if someone looks fat or had a thing with another! leave them to make their own path in life.

i came on here to pay my respects even though I have no idea who this woman was. my heart just hurt for her family and friends. and then i scroll down the comments and see the usual litany of uninformed opinions cloaked as facts.

let me post my comment before i say something disrespectful and completely irrelevant in the face of this tragedy.

I can’t imagine how painful it must have been for Choi to make the decision that she made. Civilian like us probably won’t understand the pressure of these entertainers go through. But let’s not forget that each individual made there own decision and they have to take the goods and the bads. I’m not writing this to piss people off. I’m writing this so that we all can learn from this tragedy and look back on what we have and appreciate what we have and no matter how harsh the situation might be, let’s fight through it and don’t make the choice that Ms. Choi has taken

Even after her divorce, she made good career choices by starring in “The Last Scandal”… I almost couldn’t recognise her as the dowdy ahjuma but i must really applaud her acting skills..

Why? I don’t understand, you were doing so well after your divorce…. sorry if i don’t make sense, i’m crying now…

“Aid” as in resource/help. Not the disease.

Are you even familiar with the Korean culture? Since you have “no idea who this woman was”, it appears that you don’t.

Do you realize how filthy poor Korea was back in the 50’s? It was a 3rd world country. And it’s a miracle to see where they are right now. The level of progression takes other countries 200 years. It took Korea 40 years.

THat is good but it still doesn’t address mental illness in Korea. One can’t always skate by on image maybe that is the problem. South Korea is techologically advanced but culturally stagnant and both need to be on equal level

where is the apology from media themselves? they reported the false rumors that damaged choi’s reputation and peace of mind. they printed it like it’s proven fact. they kept at it as long as netizens gossiped about choi.

why don’t they admit being the messenger of such evil act? now they try to romanticize her life story like a tragic K Drama? shame on them.

  74. 74 kak2gi October 4, 2008 at 2:54 am

i don’t understand what it is about Korean culture and celebrity that tells Korea’s famous people that suicide is an option.

let’s not get it twisted. suicide is something that happens in any country, be it Korea, the US, Europe….the sad fact is that its everywhere.

but its really alarming when so many of Korea’s celebrities commit suicide. it seems like there’s a couple every year. i’m not saying that one suicide is more traumatic or devastating than another but in what other country do celebrities who have been highly successful like Choi Jin Shil commit suicide? that would be the equivalent of mega soap star Susan Lucci here in the US being found hanging in her home.

but there is an underlying dark cloud that hovers over the Korean celebrity community…and Korea in general. maybe there is too much pressure in Korea to succeed, to much pride to save face, to keep honor, etc.

whatever it is, its not good, and though my motherland’s government may not care enough to make changes in laws to ease pressure off people by regulating debts and bankrupcies, the Korean people need to change their way of thinking.

i really blame the Korean internet community for perpetuating hate and cruelty toward people to a point where it would lead them to fall into a downward spiral that results in death. are netizens directly responsible? no. but they did have a hand in pushing them over the edge.

Koreans and mankind in general need to follow the basic tenants of humanity. love your neighbor, and reach out to lift someone up in their time of need instead of knocking them down.

something needs to change and it starts with each and every one of us.

  77. 77 milky October 4, 2008 at 3:20 am

Internet rumors might only be a small part of the problem. Many prominent celebrities have committed suicide long before the modern internet was around. People that were well liked, such as Seo JiWon, Chang Deok, Kim KwangSeok, etc.

  79. 79 butters October 4, 2008 at 3:42 am

    @ dwilliams

I guess the point I was trying to say is that the present culture of Korea has been shaped by many pieces of the puzzle. The most obvious case that I can think of is their history. The miraculous economic growth (which only 50 years ago Korea was poorer than Africa) took Korea to the forefront of modernity–although, Korea continues to drag its cultural baggage from the pre-modern, agricultural era. And with the fact that the past 4000 years of Korean history, only 10 percent of the time Korea was NOT under some sort of invasion, usually from China or Japan. These factors have made Koreans very defensive and constantly care about what other people think about them.

So going back to what I said earlier in my first post, if a popular trend develops in Korea, Koreans follow that trend without thinking twice about it, because other people do it too. At times, this is a source of great national strength. When there is something that demands a truly national-scale cooperation, like the World Cup or the recent Mad Cow candle lit protest– there is no better people than Koreans to extract that cooperation. However, infuriatingly, a trend often makes many Koreans lemmings.

It’s kind of rude of me to say, but finally these people show actual emotion.

Lee Eon’s funeral looked like a fashion show where the youngins went all dolled up and whatnot.

This is a true funeral, with actual emotion.

    RIP.

Yea. Choi Jin-Sil is a HUGE figure in Korea. Probably one of the most recognized and respected female celebrity. She is a legend. She defined what beauty is in the modern entertainment era (in the early 90’s). This is a huge loss and a big hit to the county’s morale.

  82. 82 Shelby October 4, 2008 at 4:05 am

This is so very heartbreaking. I had never even heard of her until now, but it looks like she was really loved. It’s so sad to hear that the industry’s lost someone else. My heart goes out to her family and those close to her, may she rest in peace.

And I kind of agree with michlee^. All of the funerals lately have seemed kind of just… there, but this one looked like it was very very emotional.

  83. 83 Raven October 4, 2008 at 4:32 am

She should have thought about her kids. How could she leave them like that no matter how cruel other people were being to her.

  84. 84 herro October 4, 2008 at 4:34 am

People need to stand up for those being defamed. Yes, it is the individual’s problem and decision, but Korea is a collective society and it’s much harder to go against the grain. Come on people, speak out against defamation!

butters, are you ethnic Korean?…just asking, because you hit the nail right on the head…you have summarized the history and culture of Korea in a few words.

Suicide is the traditional way of saving face, in East Asia especially, so let’s not judge her, whether she was temporarily insane, depressed, selfish or whatever during her moment of decision, only she knows. We can only mourn for her and feel for the children she left behind.

May she be consoled and forgiven by the loving Lord of all.

this is an awful tragedy and one that needs to be left alone for the family and friends of the deceased to mourn. why is it ok in this country to print pictures of those celebrities who are paying respects to a friend? who really cares who shows up at these funerals? when did funerals become a red carpet affair? i think this is a huge problem in korea, where is the privacy and respect for the family? why are funerals of celebrities glorified in this country? these are not public affairs no matter how public the figure is. These funerals should no be broadcast on tv or should there be photographers documenting the every move of the funeral procession. It’s terribly difficult for the family and friends of their loved ones to deal with, there’s no need to have a minute by minute report of what is happening. Respect those who have passed away and respect those who area mouning the loss of a loved on.

  121. 121 ahshi October 4, 2008 at 12:05 pm

  122. 122 omo October 4, 2008 at 12:09 pm

    @ butters,
i think there’s the way history happened for a nation/culture of people, and the way people recount their own history and stories to themselves about themselves, that gets into a cycle. the chinese also tell themselves repeated variations of the “sick men of asia” story, and everyone belonging to the society through education, community, workforce etc. all share an identity as individuals and group of being victims. persevering strength throughout victimhood isn’t uncommon to asian countries who have experienced modernization after the wars (WWII affected nearly all of asia of course - the japanese saw themselves as victims betrayed/deceived by government & military, nuclear bombs; taiwanese saw themselves as victims of chinese communists’ aggression/abandonment, japan, tho this is a great simplification of the complex feelings and relationships.)

anyway what i am saying is that sometimes how a society holds itself together (groupthink, mob mentality) prevents progress in area that need improvement (like treatment and lowering stigma for mental illness), precisely because it’s easier to hold onto the old definitions that make us “unique and different”. but is it so? once again it goes back to “the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves.” your example of belonging to the crowd via the things you buy/own is obviously common to all consumerist cultures - but it makes sense to koreans, japanese, chinese, or americans because everybody has needs to define social groups versus indiduals.

  123. 123 evvy October 4, 2008 at 12:12 pm

I think it’s amusing to see all these people here in Popseoul acting all fake and as if they are compltely pure. What’s more amusing is I see usernames of the worse bashers of certain celebrities here in Popseoul, now you act all disgusted about the korean antis for driving Choi Jin Shil to commit suicide.
I dont think it makes all you people any different from korean antis. Dont you guys sit here and bash the celebrities that you dont like? Haven’t you people cheered Popseoul on while she is bashing a celebrity in her posts?
Haven’t most of you accused the celebrities that you dont like of hurtful things that is not even true?

Now what makes you different from those antis? You are all of the same disgusting species, who dont care who you hurt.

So please dont act all fake and sad. If you are all really sad about this then maybe next time you’d think twice before bashing a celebrity.

Ive been reading the comments about all the rumors and speculation that drives korean celebs to suicide. I dont agree that bad comments about on the internet should be monitored. Korea isnt china. People in Korea have the right to say what ever negative or positive comment they want. Actresses and actors should not feel ashamed to go to a shrink if they are feeling stressed. Talking about their situation to others can help them be relieved of the pressure. It seems that they must be suffering in silence. They dont need to.

of course, they wouldn’t ’cause koreans just love letting everyone know their opinions… but they should at least do something about this cruelty and viciousness that targets individuals…
