Ku Hye-sun cast in “Boys over Flowers”

Ku Hye-sun completes the cast of the Korean version of “Hana Yori Dango” (”Flower over Boys) in the highly anticipated drama.

Ku Hye-sun plays “Yeon-woo” (Makino Tsukushi), in a Cinderella type tale of a poor Dry Cleaner’s daughter who meets F4 leader, Lee Min-ho and her life changes.

Director Jeon Ki Sang chose Ku Hye-sun since she fits the image of the character. He may think so, but do you?

The rest of the cast includes Lee Min-ho as Domyoji, Kim Hyun-joong as Rui, Kim Bum as Sojiro and Kim Joon as Akira. “Flower over boys” will air on KBS1 in December 2008.

The is Ku Hye-sun’s 3rd drama in 2008 following SBS “King and I” and KBS “Strongest Chil-Woo.”

she looks much older than she really is…i don’t think she has the skills to pull off makino’s personality…she looks too pleasant…i don’t know about this drama…i predict another bomb drama

  2. 2 . October 6, 2008 at 7:34 pm

^ u mean in that pic rite? coz she always looks much younger than her age to me. she looks like.. hmm..18?
but she being makino is something i never predict. not that i dont like her. i like her. but let see if she be makino..

There are Bi cover pictures floating around,
I wonder why you still haven’t made a blog about him.
You are supposed to be Bi obsessed.

  4. 4 Tristan October 6, 2008 at 7:35 pm

I dont think she’ll be able to pull off the sassy image convincingly.

  5. 5 sheda October 6, 2008 at 7:37 pm

    i don’t think so….cause i haven’t heard of her yet…

oh, i’ll just wait and see :)

  6. 6 MKL October 6, 2008 at 7:53 pm

    I think she’ll play a great Makino.

She was great in 열아홉 순정 and I think her role in this is similar.

  7. 7 ki October 6, 2008 at 8:05 pm

YAY! I love her, she’s a great actress and I think she fits the part well <3

  8. 8 rockmyboat. October 6, 2008 at 8:49 pm

I loved her in nonstop and she has a lot of experience under her belt! Definitely looking forward to this drama in December (:

  9. 9 TomatoJuice October 6, 2008 at 8:54 pm

she’s playing Makino Tsukushi/Shancai? oh?.. well yeah,, I’ll wait for this one..

  10. 10 deathbylogic October 6, 2008 at 8:55 pm

morons who don’t know anything about goo hye sun should SHUT UP.

she can’t pull off Makino’s attitude?

    YEAH RIGHT.

she’s an actress under YG Entertainment, the same company your favourite mini muffin Big Bang boys are in.

    take that for ATTITUDE!

  11. 11 fishy October 6, 2008 at 8:59 pm

dont really like how she looks -__-. hope se could pull off the role though. im pretty excited for the korean version

  12. 12 mng13 October 6, 2008 at 9:11 pm

she’s ahead of those 4 guys by a mile in terms of acting…… she’s not gonna have a lot of fun….let’s hope they manage to catch up with her a little…

well..i don’t know anymore so many different versions, so far I really like the japanese one. It was just perfect , and the filming of the dorama was perfect, hm…i do want to watch the k version see what it is actually like ^^

  15. 15 crysalide October 6, 2008 at 10:12 pm

the boys have to catch up with her. she’s way too much experience to play this role. i don’t think it’s a challenge at all.

GHS can act and i heard she also direct a short film. and another, she also got offers from hollywood. see how can u top that.

the downside is she’s as old as YEH and the boys are way younger. oh well even sachai also older than the boys. so who can complain

  16. 16 jaeyy October 6, 2008 at 10:15 pm

im very excited for this! i just wanted to let you know that its a small detail but the translation for hana yori dango is boys over flowers.

thank you for the info! im very excited!

  17. 17 kirara43 October 6, 2008 at 10:16 pm

I think I agree with someone who commented earlier, but I think she is a lot older than the 4 guys, aren’t you suppose to cast someone either the same age as them or a bit younger?

Both the Taiwanese and Japanese cast’s Makino was pretty much close in age.

I saw her lastest role in Strongest Chil Woo and I really didn’t think she was all that great.

I guess we’ll see how well she does with this korean version.

  18. 18 u_chill October 6, 2008 at 10:26 pm

    shes so prettyy

  23. 23 ria October 6, 2008 at 11:24 pm

FAIL. I wanted Ha Ji Won but I know shes too A-list to do this. Still, she would be perfect.

  24. 24 carribeane October 6, 2008 at 11:33 pm

    Kirara43,
as far as I know, for the Taiwanese version, Makino (Barbie Hsu) was older than ALL the F4 guys. and between her and the guy playing Rui (Vic Chou) who was the youngest of the lot, it was a gap of 5 years. and Barbie was 25 years old then. So I don’t see the prob with the age gap.

that said, GHS has nv been a fave of mine so it makes the show less to be anticipated than i hoped. sigh. but she’s a good actress though, just that her character in Pure 19 totally rubbed me the wrong way. But it’s similar to the Makino role - cute but coarse and annoying - so i think she cd probably pull it off well. just tt i’m not so interested anymore heh.

  25. 25 sam October 6, 2008 at 11:53 pm

oh..im fine with ku hye sun playing the female lead role… don’t write her off just because you think she can’t act or is not the one you anticipated. In Strongest Chil woo, i find that the focus were on the guys and not the gals…. and because of her background and her current situation, she doesn’t seems to have much to prove her acting skills.

I’m definitely waiting for this drama to be shown.. :)

  26. 26 YIn October 7, 2008 at 12:04 am

I’m totally okay with her as makino, it’s the f4 i worry about.

The japanese f4 did a goddamn good job.

  27. 27 D October 7, 2008 at 12:05 am

    Yes!

Hana Yori Dango the Korean version! Woot!

Can’t wait to see Hyun Joong play Hanazawa. He better do justice to my favorite character or I’ll hate him….lol not really.

  28. 28 natalie October 7, 2008 at 12:15 am

i think they will do all well. remember princess hours they where all basicly unknown and they knocked it out the k=drama park. she is a great choice! and by the way the japanese actress that played Makino in real life is older then this girl. it will be another k-drama hit.

  29. 29 megane October 7, 2008 at 1:04 am

@natalie…the Japanese Makino, Inoue Mao, was just 18 when she starred in the first part, 19/20 in part 2 and and 21 when the final movie was made, true to the ages of Makino in the series…she’s only 21 right now. It was Barbie Xu who was older than the Taiwanese F4 by 5 yrs but Barbie couldn’t hold a candle to Mao Inoue when it comes to acting as Makino and also Jun Matsumoto, Shun Oguri and the rest of the cast of the Japanese F4 is a hard act to follow…hopefully the Korean F4 will not disappoint the fans of the manga.

  30. 30 byul1232 October 7, 2008 at 1:49 am

wow some of you guys are SO SHALLOW.
“aren’t you suppose to cast someone either the same age as them or a bit younger?”
I’m sorry, but that’s the STUPIDEST thing i’ve ever heard.
    who made up that rule?
if the director thinks you’re good for the part, then AGE doesn’t matter. Song Seung Hun played a high school student when he was in his late twenties. the movie was a flop because the company who made it just sucked at making the movie, but song seung hun was good in it.

plus, goo hye sun looks WAY younger than she actually is.
That picture doesn’t do her justice.

and people who are doubting her as makino because of the way she looks, LOOKS ARENT EVERYTHING.
she’s already proved that she’s a good actress
and for people who think she doesnt fit the role, well, how do you know if shes going to fit it or not?

it’s a difficult role to fit because the japanese version was so good, but because its just that difficult, goo hye sun will try that much harder, don’t you think?

sorry for the rant, but i hate it when people doubt even before they see the final package

  31. 31 rockmyboat. October 7, 2008 at 2:39 am

And to be honest, it sounds like a lot of you posters haven’t really seen goohyesun’s acting skills, let alone heard of her. A lot of you are just judging her by that one photo up there. Go do some research before you start shooting out shallow comments

  32. 32 .... October 7, 2008 at 3:28 am

Wow…def not expecting that, they should have picked a younger actress definatly. man…her acting is good, but she’s doesn’t look like a high school-er!!!

  33. 33 .... October 7, 2008 at 3:33 am

    To:byul1232

you say looks aren’t everthing, and it’s true, looks aren’t everything, but looks do matter. everybody judges based on looks, you can’t help it.

Knowing that she’s older won’t help our imagination that she’s a high schooler. even if she is a good actress, you can’t help the fact that she is OLDER then the guys, which makes it seem like she’s not the character.

  34. 34 han October 7, 2008 at 3:59 am

    what?
    ghs?
aw man i was really looking forward to this but with her as makino i don’t think i’ll be watching once it comes out..

i’m not complaining about her age or whatever cause she does look young
but something about her face bugs me….circle lenses?

thank god kim bum isn’t playing tsukasa or rui

  35. 35 redbraces October 7, 2008 at 4:50 am

    aw man…
i was hoping for go ara…
gu hye sun’s a good actress but she does look older and i can’t picture her and lee min ho. whether you like it or not, they are the centerpiece of the drama. i’m still hoping… this sounds really bad but maybe they’ll switch her casting? boo hoo. go ara proved herself in “who are you,” i think she could do well in this…

  36. 36 nikeg October 7, 2008 at 4:54 am

she definitely fits the makino look at least. she looks like she can be tough

  37. 37 HienOo October 7, 2008 at 5:08 am

for those who think she’s not pretty enough or doesnt have the looks: Makino is not supposed to be good-looking in the manga (not that this girl’s ugly or anything)
i dont know whether she’s a good actress or not, but i’m still looking forward to this drama (with a plot like hana yori dango, the drama cant get really bad), hopefully she’ll represent makino’s fiery and strong character just like inoue mao in the japanese version

  38. 38 kay October 7, 2008 at 5:34 am

if you’ve ever see hyesun’s earlier work, especially nontop 5, you would know the versatility this very talented actress has. very expressive and can go from one extreme to the other. who better than to portray makino in this drama. just for the record, i loved meteor garden with barbie hsu, who was slightly older or around the same age as hyesun is when she filmed it. she should be great as she was in pure 19, the drama that pulled in top ratings when it came out in 2006. ku hyesun fighting!!!!!!

  39. 39 Brina October 7, 2008 at 5:39 am

Wow they made a great choice! She’s perfect for the part and has that spunky/cute attitude Makino had in the original. Plus, she’s very cute/pretty.

  40. 40 Caffeine October 7, 2008 at 6:12 am

KHS is a very good choice.
I agree that if you look at her earlier works, she’s pretty diverse in her characters.

  41. 41 the one. October 7, 2008 at 6:19 am

NO! i think she is pretty but the age gap between the lead male and her is like alot.. well it seems like so.
    i like her but,. Ugh.

  42. 42 marr October 7, 2008 at 6:27 am

at first when i see goo hye sun as makino i was kinda relieved because finally the long awaits the female lead is one of the actress not some of newbie. well i dont know much about her when i had thoughts like maybe shim min ah, im sung jung, yeh had never crossed my mind since appreantly seeing her in screen again and again and again and again, i cant stand her annoying voice arent ya too?

  43. 43 sc October 7, 2008 at 6:35 am

She’s gorgeous and she’s such a great actress. Give her a chance.

  44. 44 LUCI October 7, 2008 at 7:01 am

good for her! she gets to spend time with those yummy guys;] we’ll see if she can pull off Makino.

  45. 45 crypticbluerose October 7, 2008 at 7:23 am

oh good for her. what’s wrong lol, makino was cute to me too. It’s called “acting”

  46. 46 rubylovefaith October 7, 2008 at 7:26 am

    She is a good actress……..

  47. 47 HAHAHA October 7, 2008 at 7:39 am

she has a very young girlish shy look but looks can fool you because she seems like a go-getter juggling acting and getting behind the camera to play other major roles in filming. i think she’s really smart and talented.

  48. 48 butterfly October 7, 2008 at 7:49 am

I hope this is good because I love that actress. She’s so cute! The Japanese Hana Yori Dango was so boring and they couldn’t act. -__-

  49. 49 gloria October 7, 2008 at 8:16 am

whatever, im for the boys, not her

  50. 50 angelfish09 October 7, 2008 at 8:20 am

    Wow, this sounds interesting.
I don’t really know the girl yet, but hope to soon.
So according to most of u people, she’s good right?
*crossing fingers* hope the new version will be good!

  51. 51 Um. No. October 7, 2008 at 9:00 am

    OMG WHAT?! WHYYY?! NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I mean, don’t get me wrong, I think Ku Hye-sun is really pretty and everything but she just doesn’t seem like a Makino. At all. I am really disappointed :(

  52. 52 boldstripes October 7, 2008 at 9:08 am

uugh…idk i havent seen her in anything yet, cant judge her acting talent, she looks cute tho, just keep your hands of Hyun Joong…

  53. 53 millie October 7, 2008 at 9:47 am

err…i think that the original is always beterr
    highly anticipating with the remake….
and she’s too old, well not TOO old, but they should have had someone youngerr..

  54. 54 wtf October 7, 2008 at 9:49 am

    ARE YOU FCKIN KIDDING ME?
For those who are complaining, did you guys ever see her act?
It seems that majority of you didn’t.
    Fyi, she’s a great actress!
And i’m glad that she got casted in…

  55. 55 rhey October 7, 2008 at 9:57 am

@butterfly…are you sure you really watched the Japanese Hanadan?…because if you did, you would know that both Mao and Jun did justice to their respective roles, winning awards for HanaDan, not to mention Shun Oguri who played Rui, is another award winner, Shota and Abe as Sojiro and Akira, all accomplished actors…how could you say they couldn’t act?!

  56. 56 devin October 7, 2008 at 10:21 am

i’m happy with her as makino. she’s so pretty and young and fresh. as for talent, this could be her break-through role. give her a chance!

  57. 57 haha October 7, 2008 at 10:26 am

    yaay~

  58. 58 Tenderly October 7, 2008 at 10:28 am

I’m skeptical but I’m curious to see how she will do. Hopefully this won’t be a faceplant outcome.

  59. 59 Sierra October 7, 2008 at 10:41 am

Hellooo… POPSEOUL… is it Boys Over Flowers or Flowers Over Boys? You’re confusing…

    You don’t try to confuse!!!

  60. 60 K October 7, 2008 at 10:51 am

errr… isn’t the whole point of Makino a average looking girl, from an average background, with a whole lot of spunky personality?

Ku Hye-sun is farrrrrr too pretty for the role. And she looks too sweet. I don’t know much about her acting.. but I think she will just come across as ‘fake’ spunky to me…

    @rhey

Actually I also think they couldn’t act.. if you follow Japanese entertainment industry.. idols tend to bag awards and stuff, because it is a very idol worship culture.. so I don’t think it had anything much to do with their acting, more like their popularity. But I did like the female lead there, she really fit the character of makino well.

  61. 61 mooshin93 October 7, 2008 at 11:02 am

hm..i think ku hye sun would be able to pull off the character lol she hasnt had that many break out roles where ppl can look at her as a really talented actress..like she always plays the pleasant, innocent type-_- but yea for those ppl who watched her drama ‘pure 19′ she truly does display her talent as an actress=]

  62. 62 TheKIM October 7, 2008 at 11:18 am

I think she matches VERY well. She even looks like it. :)

Did you guys know she became a celebrity through cyworld? That’s her uulzangness for you.

  63. 63 Taejus October 7, 2008 at 12:51 pm

    YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  64. 64 Taejus October 7, 2008 at 12:51 pm

(she did well in pure in heart even though it was a very cheesy drama)

    :)
    me happy nao!

  65. 65 S H A Y October 7, 2008 at 1:04 pm

    @deathbylogic, yer hilarious :)

Although many of you preferred actresses like Go Ah Ra or Park Min Young to play the role of Makino, GU HYE SUN PWNS ALMOST EVERY GIRL IN ACTING.

    She’s wonderful, I like her.

  66. 66 Drak October 7, 2008 at 1:42 pm

Either good or bad, we’ll just have to wait and see ^^. I want to find out for myself too ;D.

  67. 67 Why? October 7, 2008 at 1:44 pm

Eh? aww…I wanted YEH to be Tsukushi….oh well, I hope she can handle Tsukushi’s role..

  68. 68 VIVAN October 7, 2008 at 1:44 pm

    I like the casts!
THEY ALL MATCH with the original hana yori dango :]
    AHHH can’t wait ^^
but this girl….she sucks @ acting.
hopefully she can pull it off! :O

  69. 69 Dramalovers26 October 7, 2008 at 2:30 pm

Instead of arguing over whether or not Goo Hye Sun can act, or that she’s too ‘old’, wait and watch. If you’re a fan of the manga and the previous drama you’re know the Korean version have to step up in terms of acting, plot, etc. I think it’s more of a stereotype from the viewers because in reality ‘age’ is just a number and when the actors are ‘acting’ they will be in their character and become their character. Barbie Hsu the Taiwanese actress was 5 YEARS older than Rui, and at least three years older than Jerry, however in the drama because of her ‘becoming the character’ the viewers did not boo hoo the fact that she was way older than the guys. Basically give Goo Hye Sun a chance, the PD chose her for a reason, and if you can’t stand watching the drama because of her then don’t watch.

  70. 70 Mrbloo October 7, 2008 at 3:36 pm

Yay Goo Hye Sun in a new drama. I only saw the Taiwan version ‘Meteor Garden’ and was actually bored with the drama , though a lot of my friends loved it, but i’ll probably watch for Goo Hye Sun as I love her.

  71. 71 secretivesoul October 7, 2008 at 3:40 pm

I’m skeptical after having seen the other two adaptations. I’m not hugely fond of Meteor Garden, but the Japanese Hana Yori Dango is just fantastic. I’m actually a bit worried about the males and females, but I think they’re all talented actors and great celebrities in their own right.

It just seems to me that many people have seen Barbie Xu and her Japanese counterpart for expectations to soar. But I am excited. HyunJoong is my real draw sadly. T-T

  72. 72 measuringsummer October 7, 2008 at 5:18 pm

I know who she is. She acted in this drama called pure heart of 19 as an old fashioned girl from north korea.

  73. 73 romar October 7, 2008 at 6:50 pm

this is something to look forward to. i’ve already watched the japanese and taiwanese version…

  74. 74 mirra October 8, 2008 at 3:51 am

awwww i wanted Go Ara…but i knew they would never pick her…i mean, she would be considered TOO pretty for the role of makino :)

oh well, can’t wait to see this version!

  75. 75 YUNJAE Love October 8, 2008 at 5:12 am

Hmm i don’t know who is she.
oh well.we’ll see how’s her acting when the time comes then.
although maki is my fave <3

  76. 76 annie October 8, 2008 at 5:58 am

yay, i think she’s really pretty and cute too, just like makino in the japanese version

  77. 77 evvy October 8, 2008 at 7:22 am

omg there have been too many variations of this drama. hopefully this one will live up to the Japanese one, unlike Meteor Garden.

  78. 78 cattleya October 8, 2008 at 11:29 am

when they were casting for METEOR GARDEN Korean Version i was thinking this actress to be fitting the role of Barbie Hsu…to those who are solely judging her through her photo posted, this actress can actually act. i saw her act in KING AND I and she acted maturely for her age of 22 i supposed. and from then i can tell if she were to be casted in MG of Korea…she will be perfect. she herself is a director so she knows more in acting.

  79. 79 vivian October 9, 2008 at 8:28 am

i dont know her, but i think she can act well, hope this version not suck like Taiwanese version, dont know why ppl like it, it childish and suck

  80. 80 KM October 11, 2008 at 7:02 am

LOL @ whoever said that the comments about looks or age were shallow. We are talking about an actress right? The industry she is in personifies the very thing which you claim to be shallow. I’m not saying it’s right but that’s the reality of the entertainment industry therefore, it’s the standard and just like in any other field you should be able to meet that standard in order to get the job.

Anyhoo… I don’t take issue with her age, I think she could pull off a high school student but I really can’t imagine her in this role. I’ve seen most of the dramas she been in and her acting isn’t bad but does lack diversity. I feel like I’m watching the same sweet, innocent character in every drama she’s been in. Whether that’s the fault of typecasting or whether it’s her acting ability, that has yet to be seen. Also, I can’t imagine her throwing a full punch at Tsukasa with those wiry arms of hers and knocking him down, nor can I imagine Ku Hye Sun convincingly show a fit of internal and external rage as Makino’s character so often does (she seems to do angst and brooding well). It just doesn’t seem realistic but I could be wrong we’ll just have to wait and see.

My first choice for Makino would have been Park Min Ji. I think she would have been perfect for the role.

  81. 81 aina October 11, 2008 at 11:30 am

no one can beat the meteor garden of taiwan.. :)
    that’s a fact.

  82. 82 angela October 12, 2008 at 2:26 pm

    yay i like her! ( :

  83. 83 Kittyn October 15, 2008 at 6:06 am

Oh, suggested Park Min Ji as Makino/Shancai.. and I want to say that I agree. She seems to have the personalities as the character, the facial expressions and so on. She would fit the role. I haven’t seen Ku Hye-Sun before, so I’m looking forward to see how she will pull the character off. I’ve seen both the Japanese and Taiwanese version, I liked them both very much, so I have high hopes for the Korean version to be as good. Yay. :D

  84. 84 aina October 15, 2008 at 4:37 pm

vivian: i very much disagree with you…

the taiwanese version (meteor garden) is the best..compared to the japanese version and I’ll bet it will still be if compared to the korean one.
anyway, it’s not sure yet..because korean version has not been aired yet.

i just hope the korean actress as the leading lady, wouldn’t go for a weak and dumb look.. (as i have observed in the korean tv series or even movies, the leading ladies have these dumb attitude, as if they got no pride and self-respect, while the guys are so macho and proud.) because the taiwanese leading lady barbie xu, got it good as a fighter.

An inspired choice as Goo Hye Sun has as great a range of emotional releases and facial expressions as anyone in the business. A deservedly award-winning actress who will amaze and delight you with her talents and for the light that is behind her eyes. Anyone bearing witness to her in Nonstop 5 knows that there is no ground that she can’t cover as an entertainer. Goo Hye Sun is definitely much more than just another pretty face. This girl created a career and continues to add layers (writing, drawing, singing, directing…)to it with each passing season. She is Makino!!!

    Prepare to be wowed…

I think she’s able to do a good job because I’ve seen her act in Pure 19 and she’s really good, and cute too :D So give her a shot people.. Even though I admit Inoue Mao is still the best “Makino” ever, but let’s see how this turns out :)

    i don’t really care who plays makino’s role…
i’m only anticipating it because i really like the story.
and i also love the male casts.
i think korean actors and actresses are pretty good.
    can’t wait till december

i think that shes a little old but will be able to pull off the character perfectly
i mea nif she could pull off a sassy but sweet image in pure in heart im sure she’ll be able to do it here too
    :]

Though for me, Inoue Mao is the best Makino or more like IS Makino, all I can do for now while I’m anticipating the airing is to wait and see the results. I’ve seen the trailers and well, I didn’t really feel the ‘weed power’ Makino always has (in a HYD manga & anime lover’s point of view). Yes, I do agree she is old and looks old Makino’s role. But I really really hope I’d get it wrong and end up enjoying the drama! I liked her in Pure 19 though.

    One more day to go!!!
