Wondergirls coming to a theater near you in 2009

The dancing gorilla is at it again but this time, he will be focusing on the movie industry.

At PIFF, JYP announced that the Wondergirls will be breaking into the American entertainment industry not as singers but as actresses in 2009.

It seems as if JYP’s attempt to get U.S attention on Perez Hilton’s website was not that successful.

Their management, JYPE, stated that it was through the interest raised by Sohee’s breakthrough role in the movie “I Like It Hot” that ultimately pushed for a new move specifically made for the Wondergirls. Although nothing can be revealed since nothing has been finalized, the tentative date of their venture will be sometime in 2009.

  2. 2 Shar October 6, 2008 at 4:25 am

Um, are they all suppose to have the same pose?????

  3. 3 xox October 6, 2008 at 4:30 am

acting in the American industry? I don’t see how it will work. I mean in movies one or two people who can’t speak English well – is okay but to watch 5 girls who can’t speak English try to pull off another “spice girls” type movie — is horrifying.

  4. 4 LUCI October 6, 2008 at 4:30 am

thats a surprise. in my opinion
I don’t think theyre ready just yet. good luck anyways

  5. 5 anon October 6, 2008 at 5:10 am

the colour of their upper bodies vs their legs is way too big. i think proper tans or a better make up artist is in order.

  6. 7 stee October 6, 2008 at 5:32 am

    this claim isn’t definite..
i read on soompi that a jyp associate said this was not true
    these are just rumours.

  7. 8 Izumi October 6, 2008 at 5:46 am

I think JYP may be targeting the Disney kids as the market.

If the Wonder Girls try to compete in the adult music industry in the U.S., they’ll be crushed because all they have is glamor and image (no real musical substance).

    BUT

if they go into the pre-teen market, alongside Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers, they actually have a pretty solid chance. Once you get those hungry Disney fans to like your image and style, those kiddies will get their parents to buy them all the CD’s/Movies/DVD’s/Dolls/etc.

And since the glamor/style/image of the Wonder Girls seem pretty suited for that target, I think it just might work if they did that.

But now, if JYP’s trying to get them to compete against PCD or Britney… That’s just awful…

  8. 10 rk October 6, 2008 at 7:00 am

watever..good luck with this one JYP. I wonder if they can even speak english clearly. I would have to agree with Izumi, they would prob get somewhere if they went to Disney. but for now i’m all doubt.

  9. 11 honey October 6, 2008 at 7:15 am

no idea how THAT will work out…
the key to the wonder girls is their togetherness as a group, presentation as performers, charisma as REAL stars, and addictiveness as trend-setters.
they all focus on the music industry, and it REALLY doesnt seem like sucha good idea to invest them in some other industry.
i dont get why koreans cant just stick to korea. its enough to be known all over asia. its just too difficult to break such a HUGE cultural barrier in one stroke, and its too much of a waste to risk their consistent & successful music careers to debut in america.

First, it’s gonna be hard finding a credible director. Second, the budget will be very limited. Third, very limited audience = box office flop. Fourth, we just all know it’s gonna be a horrible film. :(

Unless they make a five-some erotica film (because Westerners have fetish for Asian girls), no one will care to watch.

  11. 13 rubylovefaith October 6, 2008 at 7:20 am

    GOOD LUCK……..THEY WILL NEED IT…….

  12. 14 asianromance October 6, 2008 at 7:27 am

I agree with Izumi for the most part about the Disney thing. I do have to say that some of the Wondergirls do have some real musical substance but their songs don’t encourage that. I think all the WGs can do in the entertainment industry that targets adults is to act as extras. Look even talented Asian-American actors and actresses get pushed aside and are given small supporting roles- some of them stereotypical. I hope he isn’t imagining the girls to be the next John Cho.

  13. 15 Sharurotto October 6, 2008 at 8:26 am

    Ewwww gross.

    Major FAIL.

Why can’t Koreans stick to one thing…like just singing or just acting…they all have to be entertainers and juggle everything…but I guess that’s what happens when you have zero talent except for your fat-ass dumplings

  14. 16 TomatoJuice October 6, 2008 at 8:38 am

woooo..they dont like BLACK that much..

  15. 17 Kathy October 6, 2008 at 8:42 am

    OMG
i hate it when singers move to acting
    and they are horrible actors

    i didnt see sohee’s “i like it hot” so i can’t say..
    it might turn out okay
but there’s a lot of wondergirls haters out there

in my opinion, wondergirls (esp sohee) are overrated..
yes i guess they do have talent but its just mediocre.

sometimes i think of yubin like top from bigbang.. they don’t get much time in the music but they’re talented

matching dresses/shoes/hair does not make a statement.. it just shows they don’t have any creativity but maybe its cuz of their nobody album idk

  16. 18 Cilla October 6, 2008 at 8:48 am

    @ Sharurotto
Just in case you haven’t noticed, the rest of the world does the same thing. (i.e Jennifer Lopez, Lindsey Lohan, Hilary Duff, etc.)

If JYP wants them to become actresses so be it…It’s not like they have THAT much of a choice.

  17. 19 Eazy October 6, 2008 at 8:49 am

Oh…oh wow. That will be one HECK OF A MOVIE…can they even speak english!?

  18. 20 S H A Y October 6, 2008 at 8:56 am

    OH GEEZ.

I hate this singer to actor transition thing, IT’S GETTING FREAKING OLD.

  19. 21 Kathy October 6, 2008 at 9:01 am

    @S H A Y
    yeah
cuz they use their popularity from sining and automatically think that the film they will make will be a hit

  20. 22 wishful_star October 6, 2008 at 9:06 am

I am strangely reminded of Hannah Montana.
    -shivers in fright-
I really hope that Wonder Girls don’t turn out to be like her.

  21. 23 Kathy October 6, 2008 at 9:09 am

    @wishful_star
    yes
    ew hannah montana can’t sing

  22. 24 boldstripes October 6, 2008 at 9:36 am

good luck, cause they’re gonna need it, transition from singer to actress has never been pretty…and to try to break in to the US market too..JYP is way to cocky man, those poor girls…they dont know what’s coming for them..

  23. 25 live4music October 6, 2008 at 11:00 am

they all look soo pretty in that picture.and it is probably easier for them if they start out with movies and then show off their vocal skills. Good luck to the girls anyways XD

  24. 26 katy rose. October 6, 2008 at 11:05 am

If you ask me, their english isn’t that spectacular. But they’re breaking into the American movie industry? Okay. Thats. Interesting.

Maybe in Korea, their popularity from their music could make them Instant Stars in movies. But in America…I’m sorry. They’re going to need more than their skank/hoe status dancing.

“I am strangely reminded of Hannah Montana.”

hahahhaa. that was pretty good. hahahha. It frightens me tooooo.

  25. 27 Ann*e October 6, 2008 at 1:28 pm

    oh myy..
    a little too much makeup??
    haha.

  26. 28 ChiChi October 6, 2008 at 2:26 pm

    Huh.
    Interesting move, JYP.
In terms of marketing, I think it’s smart to have an unknown group act first and sing later. With a visual, the audience can key in and say ‘Oh yeah, I remember those Asian chicks from Saw IV – they’re the ones who are singing?’
(I made that up as an i.e.)
    Yeah, it’s smart.
What is worrying is how the h they are ever going to successfully get over the language barrier in order to make a movie. And what sort of movie is it? Plot, substance, American cast besides them?
    Sketchy.
Possibly a rumor. And an alarming one at that.

  27. 29 JuLy October 6, 2008 at 3:15 pm

    eryh?
    i’m a WG fan but..
JYP gone a bit too far..

  28. 30 vanzgabz October 6, 2008 at 3:21 pm

    FIGHTING WG!!!
but i hope they’re not going to act in Saw IV
    XDD HWAITING

  29. 31 Dovey October 6, 2008 at 3:38 pm

Best of luck to them, because they’re gonna need it. As for horrid English, take “The Forbidden Kingdom” as an example, but Jet Li (I find him especially bad) and Jackie Chan have already taken root in the U.S. market for some time now, so their Engrish can be overlooked by people, or either people just don’t care…too much?

  30. 32 jin October 6, 2008 at 8:29 pm

uhh…. is it me? or does yoobin look fatter? o_0
i hope not, she’s my favorite!

    Oh wow,thats gonna be tough.
I love the WonderGirls, but for them to act in english movies, they def need to speak fluent english.
YooBin won’t have any probs with that, but im worried for the other girls.

& wow,JYP’s gonna let all 5 of them try out acting in the US?
i hope they get good roles that can really makes them stand out.
    Hwaiting WonderGirls !

  35. 37 Big A October 8, 2008 at 8:02 pm

    ahh~ I’m anticipating >.<

  37. 39 KDRAMA GIRL October 14, 2008 at 12:14 am

OK! I love the Wonder Girls, BUT to make it here in the states is a very tough thing to do in music, movie and tele. The states are filled with harsh cirtics and the girls have to be ready for this not to mention the racisim that they will most likely recive from people who don’t know who they are.

XOX is right about english. I always try to get people to look at K-dramas and they look at me like i am crazy when they here someone speaking english.

Izumi is also right but by the time the WG get here all the good ideas will be taken they can’t come and do he same thing that already has been done. the Disney fans will eat them up.

I went to the Cheousok Festival this year, the turn out was not what i expected, even on the day the WG were there. I thought all of Asia America (young,pre-teen and teen) was going to be there, boy was i wrong. The crowd was bigger than it was the day before but not that big. The wonder girls have to be know here in the states (not just by Asian America, Disney is universal) but i think that because they are being overrated in Korea by the time they get here no one will really appreciate them.

The WG lack alot age: if he was going to go Disney he should have gotten them in when he first brought them out, we would have grown with them, acting: the only wonder i have seen act was soohee (hellcats) and i do think she did a good job, singing: how is it in english, we know the rapper is ok.

JYP has a better chance with putting G-soul in the Disney Franchise.

I don’t think these are rumors he said it himself at Cheousok on the 21st to look out because G-soul was going to be in a sitcom he said that he was going to put Korea on the map. Eventhough i think Rain has done that. He is the first Korean artist i have ever listened to not know what he was singing about but i just loved the fact that he can sing and dance which is why i learned the korean language for him, now i listen to mostley all of korea old and new i’m additcted to UN and Hyori.

whatever JYP does with the WG i hope that he will take his time and do it right and i wish him Good Luck :)

    yoobin’s fake tan bothers me

  39. 41 vivian October 15, 2008 at 6:22 am

so with korean singers, if you can go to hollywood it mean u success? lol, when will they change their mind, they can success without hollywood, who care about hollywood, just sing good and all ppl will support u

  40. 42 moo October 25, 2008 at 2:33 pm

i agree with the majority of the consensus here.

Why do korean singers feel that they have a need to debut in the US? Inferiority complex?

Korean music industry is pretty established in Asia; hence I do not see the need for them to hop over. They could always come over for annual events to satisfy the fans; no reason to debut esp since the move is, unfortunately proven a guaranteed failure.

And, yes I do see the hard work the artistes put in to improve their english skills. But that said, improving isn’t enough. They need to converse fluently in the language. Basic english isn’t gonna get them anywhere; their flaws would be for all to see once they are interviewed. It’s already tough for Asian-American to break thru the market; what more an Asian with sub-standard command of the lang?

So, stay in korea. Do what you do best and make us fans happy.

P.S: Thank you Rain for coming back. I almost lost faith in him.

    i dont think so.

    seriously,
    jyp is uber irritating
he should focus on making wg more popu;ar in asia first.

being an old timer and collector of american music, mainly from the 30’s thru the 70’s, i found the wondergirls and their music to be refreshing. the best part was listening to it in korean instead of english. with what the kids call music today really can’t be understood in their so called english anyhow. in any event. good luck wordergirls in what ever your endeavors are. and do not even those who think different a thought. in english we call that “being jealous”.

  45. 47 To XoX and everyone else December 11, 2008 at 12:58 am

Yoobin is from the states so she can speak english pretty much. Look up your fact, the reason why so many stars are reaching for a debut in America is to be known world wide like most American musicians.

I can’t really see them as actress’s as a group, if they were in a movie solo. Sohee’s movie ‘I like it hot’ was pretty good. She played a role where not alot of Korean people would take especially at such a young age.
