Will the Japanese stay as VIPs or move on as Elves?

bb_081103

No joke. It seems like the Japanese have turned from Cassiopeians into VIPs now that DBSK is back in the motherland. But what happens when Big Bang goes back home?

Big Bang’s Concert Tour, otherwise known as “Stand Up 2008“, has seen sold out performances as well as positive attention not only from media but from other Japanese singers such as W-indsTachibana Keita, whose group won “Best Asian Singers” from the Asia Song Festival.

Through this tour, Big Bang saw about 20,000 fans all across Japan (but keep in mind they’re probably counting seats not individuals) beating their attendance rate from their last tour which was half that amount. Overall, Big Bang has received the seal of approval from the Japanese. But now that these boys are returning back home to promote their album “Remember” with their official comeback performance on MBC’s Music Core on November 8, 2008, who will replace them in Japan?

As of now, it seems like the clowns have it down pat by trying to “take over NRBs” (noraebangs or karaoke rooms) with Super Junior T’s Japanese version of “Rokkugo”.

Check out the video.

Some pictures from the concert.

kkkk, I don’t think Cassiopeians would turn into VIPs and then E.L.F. It doesn’t even make any sense Popseoul. Just because DBSK leaves Japan for a little bit doesn’t mean that their fans will change or either just because Big Bang leaves Japan does not mean that their fans will turn into E.L.F either.
Sometime u just don’t make any sense Popseoul~

  3. 3 Lalala November 4, 2008 at 1:46 pm

first? Big Bang Hwaiting! Can’t wait ’til “Remember” comes out!

  4. 4 Lalala November 4, 2008 at 1:46 pm

  5. 5 Rebecca November 4, 2008 at 1:51 pm

Can SuJu-T’s gag really carry them that far though?

    I doubt it.

  9. 9 Nick November 4, 2008 at 2:08 pm

PS, did you write the article when you got drunk?

    lol… that’s funnie

  11. 11 LUCI November 4, 2008 at 2:22 pm

i doubt that the cass would turn into VIPs. they’re too loyal to their idols. maybe u were being sarcastic? and theres like no difference between the two band except that DBSK has the sexy bod but Big Bang’s music is better(in my opinion). its good to hear Big Bang is doing well in Japan. i look forward to their next album. btw Rokkugo sounds better in Korean.

  12. 12 Hwang P. November 4, 2008 at 2:26 pm

Probably. Cassiopeians, VIPs and Elves don’t actually care about the music. They’re just shallow fangirls.
So as long as the boyband their worshiping are attractive + wear as little clothes as possible, then they’re definite fans.

  13. 13 SP November 4, 2008 at 2:32 pm

    Popseoul,

    I don’t know what you’re whining about now…

  14. 14 TVXQBBLOVE November 4, 2008 at 2:41 pm

    Duh, Popseoul is being sarcastic.
I can’t till ‘Remember,’ I’m already way into the teaser.
I didn’t have an ounce of doubt in my mind, that BB wouldn’t succeed in Japan. They’re just awesome (let me have my fangirl moments). I was so happy about what W-inds said about them! Ahhh!

Super Junior. Man, I used to like them a lot now they’re so boring and ehhh. They literally wear out every song and I’m so annoyed by them right now. =/ [Sorry Elves.] I kind of wish that they’ll grow up (or at least act their age), I wanna see a grown man concept. Funny how you called them clowns.

  15. 15 One Eyed Junior November 4, 2008 at 2:45 pm

I think Suju T’s jap debut is just a side project to keep those members busy while SJM is gaining massive popularity back in China. So yea, I doubt Suju T will make that big of a noise, although Super Junior as a whole is actually already quite popular in Japan (relatively speaking to other artists to barely did any promotional activities there).

  16. 16 strawberryfieldsforever November 4, 2008 at 3:02 pm

    whooops! NEW BANNER AGAIN, POPSEOUL?

  17. 17 strawberryfieldsforever November 4, 2008 at 3:04 pm

oh wait..i think i just saw jang dong gun, jun ryu won and another one i can’t remember who in the banner..and now, they’re gone..

  18. 18 blah November 4, 2008 at 3:10 pm

    super clowns!

  19. 19 Misty November 4, 2008 at 3:32 pm

I don’t really get this… Are you trying to say that people in Japan who like Korean music must like ALL Korean music? I’m pretty sure that the people who are fans of Big Bang’s music aren’t going to be the same ones running off to see Super Junior in concert. There are a lot of people in Japan, you know. And just because DBSK went back to Korea, doesn’t mean their fans have forgotten them. Obviously they haven’t, what with the 60k in album sales of Mirotic within its first week of release.

This article doesn’t make any kind of sense.

  20. 20 payoonyak November 4, 2008 at 3:41 pm

I have no idae about turning into VIPS.
    I am VIPS.
I love BIGBANG now and forever.
and today is TOP’s birthday, i’d like all VIPS say something ti him or pray for him.
vips should not care about the thing one have said or have written.
we should be with our BIGBANG, support our BIGBANG.

remember? love BIGBANG as much as you can do.

by the way, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU T.O.P

    i don’t really get it…

  23. 23 lMfaO November 4, 2008 at 3:57 pm

I completely don’t understand your sentences.
What are you trying to say? DBSK goes back home, so BIGeasters turn to VIPS and now that they’re going back home, they’re turning into ELFS….

WHat a completely useless article. Please, you’re generalizing the fans as people who goes for koreans who come over to Japan? It’s perfectly fine to like more than 1 artists, no matter how loyal you are.

Goodness, don’t bring unnecessary things just for the sake of making a topic for us to start bashing at each other.

  24. 24 demosthenese November 4, 2008 at 3:59 pm

iono what you guys are going on about…
the article is obviously just stating that japanese seem to go from one kpop group to another like it was nothing…well at least the media is…

dang…people need to improve their reading comprehension skills

  25. 25 Cookies November 4, 2008 at 5:47 pm

HAHAHAHA I DONT THINK SO HWANG P
I’m a VIP primarily because Big Bang’s music rocks, I’m not into sugary SuJu or DBSK pop

If Big Bang was ugly I’d still be into them

  27. 27 lalalalala November 4, 2008 at 6:31 pm

i dun really care if some cassies turn to vip..i mean, it juz 20,000 from all around japan..dbsk T concerts attended by 150,000 fans..so what the big deal if some of them turn to vip? dbsk still have a lot more fans btw..n why can’t everyone cassies or bigeasters be vip or elves too..or vice versa..it’s not like u must enjoy your idol’s music only to prove ur loyalty to ur idol right..c’mon, get some variety.. music is universal btw..

  28. 28 nd November 4, 2008 at 6:38 pm

    agree with Joongie’s_lover, post#2..

    I’m DB’s fans, and also BB’s and SJ’s…

  29. 29 pandoracat November 4, 2008 at 7:14 pm

i think BB better than TVXQ in music but who can beat TVXQ when it comes to look huh?? hehe..
    but i still prefer BB..

  30. 30 sunny November 4, 2008 at 7:15 pm

Man, seriously, what is the age of the people who read this blog? Don’t take everything to heart so much, it’s just a sarcastic article which is to be read for entertainment and also to be taken lightly.

Lighten up people. These dudes are just idol groups.

  31. 31 ^o^ November 4, 2008 at 7:25 pm

suju’ll never ever take over japan with those type of music(and mv)..

    Those are some shiny jackets!

  35. 35 Nick November 4, 2008 at 9:05 pm

BB fans like to say their music is better than DBSK. Uh don’t think so. They’re in different genres, and I’m into the genre that need some vocal skills.

  36. 36 Heather November 4, 2008 at 9:21 pm

    what’s wrong with being both.?

  37. 37 jankenpo November 4, 2008 at 9:44 pm

one : Popseoul! tohoshinki fan club in japan is called Bigeast fyi. hence Bigeastation Radio.

two: bigeast is hella loyal, they just dont “switch” fan clubs like that. ever heard of.. oh idont know, NEW FANS?!

three: i freaking love suju T.

  38. 38 Kenri November 4, 2008 at 9:45 pm

    Go Big Bang!!!!! HHHHHHHHHooooooooooooootttttttttting!

  39. 39 juriean November 4, 2008 at 9:49 pm

So the conclusion of this post is that: Japanese fans of Korean music are nothing but shallow fangirls?

  40. 40 Ria November 4, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Some people here need to get the sarcasm detector fixed. You can go to the Humor Metaphor store and get them to repair it for 20% off. Since yours might be broken, let me explain the humor of this post:

No one actually thinks that fans, or the state of being a fan is interchangeable. Popseoul was using sarcastic humor to fill an article. If you’re too dense to “get” that, hang out at nickjr.com instead of popseoul.com. Dora the Explorer doesn’t make jokes that go over your head ^_^

  41. 41 Angel November 4, 2008 at 10:09 pm

Japan seems a lot more open to korean artists now, and while Big Bang has been doing very well, Super Junior has just as much of potential, mainly because they branch out to different genres and can get a wider spread fanbase.
Big East hasn’t quit and become VIPs, you CAN be a fan of more than one group.

  42. 42 wth November 4, 2008 at 10:25 pm

that doesnt make sense. i agree with angel that you can be a fan of more than one group. i like both big bang and suju. besides, they are fairly different when it comes to genre. but given that suju released rokugo in japan instead of tracks from their 2nd album (which has their best songs), i dont think the japanese will like them being, as you call them, clowns.

  43. 43 dheartsc November 4, 2008 at 10:45 pm
  44. 44 hanbyul November 4, 2008 at 10:52 pm

E.L.F. [everlasting friends] not elves. elves are creepy creatures. [for the second thought sj-m chinese fans call themselves elf. ] but that’s out of the topic. & just like angel said super junior have a lot of potential. sj-m debuted successfully in china. so sj-t can also do it in japan~!

  45. 45 HAHAHA November 4, 2008 at 11:09 pm

people actually listen to this stuff??? if anybody sang that song at norebang with me, i’ll kick his ass out the room

  46. 46 ihavenolife November 4, 2008 at 11:22 pm

    get the sarcasm.
    don’t quite get how it’s funny…

And can we stop with the “shallow fangirls” insult?

If you really love music, you’ll respect that there’s diversity in music and what people prefer about music.

  47. 47 Izumi November 4, 2008 at 11:33 pm

It’s good to see that Big Bang is garnering positive responses from Japan.

However, I think PopSeoul wrote the article a little bit too optimistically. Getting a concert ticket sell-out with 20,000 is not really much of a “seal of approval”. Even TSZX (the most talented girl group of Asia, in my opinion) who is doing horridly in Japan as far as popularity and CD sales go garner up numbers near 10,000 ~ 13,000 on their concerts.

A lot of the Japanese just get interested and attend the concerts, so you have to remember that not everyone who attends is going to be a loyal fan, like in Korea.

Now, TVXQ is a bit of a different case because their fanbase in Japan has become rock-solid. As someone else had mentioned, their T Tour actually had a total of 400,000 seats total, and of course, all of the concerts counted separately were all marked with a “sold-out” very quickly.

It’s also important to take into consideration that Japan doesn’t have as many 빠돌이’s as Korea does (basically fans that are extremely obsessive and will be extremely loyal in buying everything that their idols produce). Even for TVXQ, BIGeast set aside, a lot of the attenders of the concerts aren’t fanatics ~ a lot of times, they attend concerts to have fun and release some stress, and get a good show (not really for the sole purpose of just supporting the artist).

So, if you take all these things into account, yes, definitely, it’s a good progressive start by Big Bang, but to put it simply, they have a long way to go to get anywhere near getting a “seal of approval”. Even TVXQ, known in Japan as the prime example of a successful Korean-Japanese cross-over band, still gets withered next to native Johnny’s groups like KAT-TUN or Hey! Say! JUMP (regardless of talent levels).

It’s amazing that TVXQ hits Oricon Weekly #1’s consecutively (and they have written history this year), but on the same note, TVXQ’s most successful single chart run with SUmmer Dream / Love in the Ice ranked at 120,000 (which is incredible if it was in Korea).

But Hey! Say! JUMP or KAT-TUN’s single sales are capable of reaching the 300,000’s, so… you know, the Japanese music market is definitely not easy.

  48. 48 lovestylefree November 5, 2008 at 12:26 am

Regardless of whatever’s going on in the post, I am just amazed at Izumi’s comment. I wish there was an article on it.

  49. 49 KingHeeMin November 5, 2008 at 12:42 am

well, all 3 bands are amazing.. i mean, we can’t compare them coz they’re totally different from each other.. ^^

  50. 50 Hero-JaeJoong November 5, 2008 at 1:48 am

    LOL.
I dun think Big East(which is the japanese fanclub’s official name for DBSK) will turn to VIPS and Elves.
maybe other international fans might, but i believe Big East will remain supportive of DBSK even after they leave Japan.
Mirotic single has alrdy proved it.

Anw,its good that Big Bang is starting to make some progress in Japan.
its a good thing their music is different from those common j-pop.
    Hwaiting,Big Bang !

  51. 51 idiots November 5, 2008 at 2:08 am

this article is stupid and waste of a post. some fans are shallow but they arent deaf. if the people think a song sounds good then they’ll listen to it. no one listens to only one artists cuz thats just odd. Popseoul go look on your own iPod/mp3/mp4/playlist and tell us if you only listen to one artist/group. I highly doubt you only listen to one artist/group so these articles are stupid

  52. 52 Izumi November 5, 2008 at 2:12 am

    F.Y.I. Popseoul,

DBSK’s Japanese fans are called Bigeast not Cass. And I doubt they will turn on their Tohoshinki so easily.

  59. 59 May November 5, 2008 at 7:15 am

Bigeast will definitely not turn on Tohoshinki that easily
since it took them like 3 years to build that up
how the heck are they just going to turn to VIPs which dont even sing in japanese?
i love big bang.but only in korea
i will like them even more if they debut in japan with a JAPANESE single not an english song in japan..
    -___-

  60. 60 Izumi November 5, 2008 at 7:23 am

    @ May:

Ah, that is one really good point.

I still don’t understand why YG does not force them to take intensive Japanese for a few months (while being inactive) and then show up on the public scene in Japan with some language capabilities.

I still have yet to find a YouTube video of Big Bang interviewing in Japanese or being on a talk show without speaking in Korean and having subtitles.

For singing the songs in English, well, they can make an excuse for that by saying that they want their songs to be noticed “internationally” and that singing in fluent English is something popular in Japan, but they have no excuse for needing subtitled translations every time they get air time…

  61. 61 Torin-San November 5, 2008 at 9:14 am

That Suju MV is old if you’re going to post it just now. Always trying a to find a way to diss Suju, huh?
Fans who love the bands enough to be call such titles aren’t going to just jump around to the next artist in the country.
Fans can be into more than one band.

To dheartsc: Woot! Heechul and Sungmin at the top! XD

  62. 62 naomicoolperson November 5, 2008 at 9:33 am

    I love DBSK.
    I like Big Bang.
Please dont say that Cassiopeians are turning into VIPs.

*** CREDIT as tagged on the photo! That banner is on “a building which is located a station before the famous Shibuya center (Shibuya is one of the biggest shopping center in JAPAN)” ***

Don’t worry, vips will always support bigbang and same goes for Cassiopeians and ELFs for their DBSK n’ Super Junior!

I’m sure BigBang will have a huge banner of themselves in Japan soon, just like Super Junior- T!!!! :D

  64. 64 reen November 5, 2008 at 10:51 am

I totally agree with lovestylefree. Honestly, PopSeoul’s biased criticism and forced sarcasm is getting on my nerves. Izumi, you should get your comments published in a blog from now on :D

  65. 65 yipees November 5, 2008 at 12:00 pm

Big Bang always comes back with a BIG BANG! Sooooo can not wait!!!!!

  66. 66 live4music November 5, 2008 at 12:07 pm

hahhaah Popseoul is trying to start a fight now between Cassies and VIPs? i LOVE DBSK, but i also don’t mind Big Bang;but let me just say that the target audience for the two groups (when in Japan) is different. everybody already knows that its BigEast is mainly a more mature crowd -> that is why DBSK’s image in Japan is very different than the one they have in Korea. But based on BigBang’s music, i don’t think they will be converting and of those fans anytime soon. BB seems to be focusing on the younger crowd. And as for SuJu-T, who knows! maybe Japanese people who like Enka music will like them because Trot has a similar feel to enka? sorry for the rant XD

ps. i dont normally read the comments too much but wow Izumi! nice post! hahaha

  67. 67 amy B. November 5, 2008 at 12:11 pm

i really don’t understand the problem with being a fan of more than one group or person 0_0
    srsly…there is no “turning.”

  68. 68 Rin November 5, 2008 at 12:42 pm

Popseoul, you do notice many fans are fans of DBSK AND Big Bang. They don’t choose unless they have to, as fans we are entitled to like both :P personal point though, Ri ri likes Xiah too XD so RELAX VIP’s and Casseiopedia (oh! however you spell it!) ^^

  69. 69 leeyana November 5, 2008 at 2:06 pm

i dunno…but this malaysian is still cassiopeian!!! abang jaejoong, HWAITING!!!!! hahahahaha!!

  71. 71 monster November 5, 2008 at 5:07 pm

    popseoul is always like this
they are more negative than positive stuffs
    plus,
they love to insult Super Junior
    SJ is not clowns okay.
they just dont go the cool way,
    thjey go the cute way.
    and its not ELVES
    its E.L.F
    wth
    and CASSIOPEIA IS ONE.

  72. 72 Noodle November 6, 2008 at 2:24 am

As much as I like SuJu T, I really, really don’t like how the Japanese version sounds. And Big Bang sounds good. Although I don’t think they’re selling as much as they actually can because they’re singing mostly in English.

  73. 73 chichi November 6, 2008 at 2:45 am

are you bored popseoul? the article has no point at all xDD

  74. 74 Amber November 6, 2008 at 7:59 am

Cant they be all three? I mean, I know theyll all be more Cassiopeians than anything else, but they can still like other bands as well. :pp

  75. 75 jin November 6, 2008 at 12:55 pm

    lol world domination? AWESOME!

  76. 76 rosa November 6, 2008 at 2:38 pm

i think the targeted fans of the three froups are quite different but dbsk and suju fans are closer in age group…
they are all proceeding well in japan and i think they will make it big…
but bb need to change its marketing people…
how come they are labelled the exile in korea to sell their number 1 album?
their style dont even come close

  77. 77 Izumi November 6, 2008 at 3:30 pm

    @ rosa:

Really? I’ve never heard of Big Bang being labeled as the “EXILE of Korea”, but if that is true, then that is a really misleading label…

  81. 81 zana November 10, 2008 at 9:22 pm

hey! if u guys like bb dbsk or watsoever, plz stick to them if you want to n leave with no comments. u guys are being childish!

n helo! if u dont like any other bands, then dont insult them. does it kills?

n excuse me! it e.l.f. not elves. your gave that name is it??!

  82. 82 Hangeng_is_fugly November 13, 2008 at 4:14 pm

    Oh miii gosh!
    Are you people dreaming?
How the hell can you compare Bigbang to that pathetic Super Junior T?
Big Bang has it all. Great music, good-looking members.
Super junior T? Just look at their moronic faces… retarded videos, choreography and costumes? I don’t think educated Japanese people would give a s_hit about this pathetic group.
    How pathetic.

as much as i love suju becuz there are some cute members… but to make it big in JAPAN? Uh-oh… no-no. it’s not a wise strategies suju. as for i, i do love suju, seriously, becuz they’re funny. but song-wise, it’s a total flop. believe me, Japanese sense of music is not Suju’s specialties, okay? and dbsk works hard at Japan that they successfully make it big there. and japanese began to accept korean singers. and big bang juz took this opportunity to try their luck. n uh- i believe they did it? i don’t know much about their activities in Japan. but i think i prefer big bang in korea. but, more than that, suju is never gonna beat big bang, moreover turning dbsk’s and big bang’s fan into elf. and i’ve been wondered… why the heck does suju fans (i mean d fanclub. i am a suju fan also, just not that hyper about them, okay?) named the fanclub E.L.F? Its sounds so… childish… they could’ve come out with a better name. take some reference from cassiopeia and v.i.p. it sounds… high class. no offense to elf. but yeah, just an opinion.
