Is America running out of ideas? Another remake in the works

Samsoon_081106

What happened to creative ideas?

First “My Sassy Girl”, “the Chaser “, “A moment to remember” and now this?

Hollywood seems to be relying on the shoulders of success from other countries. Why? Because it guarantees easy money will be overflowing in their coffers.

The hit MBC Drama, ‘My Name Is Kim Sam Soon,’ starring Kim Suna and Hyun Bin, will be hitting the small screen across America.

NBC procured the rights to the Korean drama to be remade into a prime time series that will air sometime in 2009.

As for the cast, no word yet. But we think that they should pick Daniel Henney again. Maybe he will redeem himself from his wooden acting. And just maybe, this role can be an opportunity for him to break in to the big league.

“First, remakes ALWAYS spark interest in the originals”

Only a few people would interested in that. Also, we’re talking about America. And remember ‘Infernal Affairs’ when the DIRECTOR of the American remake called it a Japanese film at the Academy awards when it was really a Chinese film from Hong Kong?

the KSS Philippine version wasn’t that bad, it actually did great here in rating game it has its own strengths and weaknesses just like the original KSS. its just that they needed to revise some parts to adapt the Philippines culture…

Wow, this just proves that racism and close-mindedness thrives in Asia

Oh, come on Koreans. Where the hell do you think the idea of your ‘hangul’, your alphabet come from? From the Chinese! And you hardly give them the credit.

And besides, don’t you now that WRITING REMAKES IS MORE CHALLENGING TO ONE’S CREATIVITY THAN ‘REWRITING’ THOSE SILLY OLD FLUFFS? And then claiming it to be original? Writing a remake version is more difficult because you need to compromise two things: maintaining the ESSENCE of the story and characters while ADAPTING it to the local taste.

It’s sad that my fellow Asians just jump into the bandwagon of hating America for some shallow show business stuff. As if you don’t call Rain/Bi The Korean Usher.Oh, now aren’t you a copycat yourselves? You don’t pay the ‘rights’ for the ‘Korean Usher’, do you? Like how the people behind the remake paid the Korean creators of MNIKS.

I forgot, it seems that Koreans got their ‘habit’ of someone having leukemia and dying in their dramas from the American novel/movie(adaptation) A Walk to Remember.

    • 8 wendy June 30, 2009 at 8:05 am

      umm, that’s quite false.
korea and stupid leukemia/cancer have been around forever – ex: autumn tale (2000), secret, winter sonata, popcorn, etc etc.
a walk to remember the movie didn’t come out til 2002? ish, and nobody even read the book before that.

You ask if Hollywood would give credit to Korea….when was the last time Korea gave credit to anyone?

Ugh….this is gonna suck….America sucks at remakes. The only time they got it right was in the Departed and the first Ring brought some chills as well. Other than that they all sucked.

what’s wrong about it? asian entertainment copies american movies too you know. and they’re not complaining.

  14. 15 zunicat November 17, 2008 at 4:24 pm

Yes it’s stupid and Americans will mess it up. I want to see Korean dramas/movies made by Koreans. It is very hard to do this in the U.S. I wish I could find a place to rent/buy tapes or vcr but most don’t have english captions and I can only speak a few K words so far

WOW! First time that the first poster actually made sense.

I love “My lovely Sam Soon” !!! The drama is so funny~~~ XD

I hope they will remain faithful to the Korean version. Though Im sure it will not live up to my expectations it will probably be more sexual and shallow but hopefully it won’t. A part of me hopes it will be successful as it may expose more people to the wonderful world of Asian dramas. In the last decade or so American television has become increasingly worse, terrible confusing plots, too overly shallow, way too racy and sexual. Asian dramas have wonderful heartfelt plots, they make you laugh out loud, cry like a baby and at the end there is a clear, strong message. Basically they make you feel like life can be a fairy tale, no matter how harsh the world is. They show a world that we all secretly relate too and want, even if they are tragic love stories e.g. Stairway to Heaven
